You don't need film school to be successful but you do need to Learn, Make Repeate constantly! In order to close the gap from beginner to professional you have to continually be learning and making. Thats the most sure way of being successful!
Hey guys I'm curious what kind of creative are YOU??? Videographer? Photographer? Painter? Graphic Designer? Artist???
I think all we need is creative, and dreams to be Video/photographer,designer,artist.
a very beginner videographer & photographer
TravelFeels videographer
Very beginner lol but its ok
video/photo
Hey! Matti's wife here. I recently told Matti that I secretly watch all his youtube videos, not just to support him but to actually learn something about film making for myself. Some people would be surprised to know that around the time we met, I was actually into filmmaking. I bought a camera, and Matti taught me how to shoot and edit. 2 weeks after I posted my first "restaurant" video, I surprisingly landed a pretty sweet job for a big company. Unfortunately, that money came too quick in my "video career" and my "gap" doubled in size. I quit the whole filmmaking soon after. It's been 5 years since and I've tried to get back into it but my unrealistic expectations of where I want my skills to be and what I want my work to look like have been a huge hindrance. I have so much footage on my computer that has accumulated over the years and have not been edited. This morning I watched this video and I find myself inspired and ready to try again. This simple piece of advice can be applied to any skill. If you read this long post, I'm curious to know if you too had a similar experience. Is there a dream of yours that you quit too soon because you felt your skills were lacking? Do you think its time to start that up again? Life is so short and I can't keep wasting precious time telling myself I wish I could do this and that when I have the internet to teach me everything I need to know to actually make that a reality. So here's to learning about editing, stop motion, how to make a proper recipe video and everything in between! What better time than now to start living life and filling that time with things I actually want to do!
Wow, I feel like I was meant to read this. Thank you for sharing.
I have the best wife 😍
Cess H follow your dreams! life is short and I plan to quit my day job soon after I save up enough money and pursue photography/videography 120%!
Best comment made in 2017!! 🙌🏾 #LiveLife
Well said Cess! And to think, at first I thought I didn't have enough time to watch this video. And with such great comments too! So glad I found the time.
so true, you can learn everything by yourself. Problem with most people sadly is that they don't start to create just because they think it's not good enough or they will get negative feedback on it..just do it.
just found your channel..great content!
I'm like that too. I do create stuff but never feel confident about it lol
Very inspiring. Another thing that a lot of people fail is not to believe that they can make good videos with cheap equipment. They are always waiting to buy a more expensive camera as if that were the solution. It help of course, but it's not the most important thing in the world. As you said, you just have to learn, make and repeat.
#learnmakerepeat
Totally! Good gear helps but if you havent been learning and making then its pretty useless and can actually distract a lot. They think they are getting better cause they have better gear which isnt true at all.
Jorge Miranda id like to correct your statement from "cheap equipment" to "cheap cameras." Using a 300 dollar dslr has taught me that i dont need an expensive camera, but my computer has taught me that im not gonna get anywhere fast when it takes me a straight day to colour grade a minute of video due to slow render times.
One of the most encouraging videos you’ve made, Matti! Much appreciated!
Your 6 years ago videos are better than my today videos...
I'll stick to photography lol.
+smokey267 haha nothing wrong with that!
Films are just moving images, and as a photographer you probably already know how to make a good image - composition, lighting, all this colour stuff and so on. Actually, in film schools (at least in Russia) future cameramans and DPs in the first year of study do not shoot video, and they don't touch video cameras at all - they shoot photos, and learn about all this photography things. Next, they shoot a series of photos connected with a story they a trying to tell. After that they shoot static shots on video camera without camera movement and without cuts, despite there is must be something happening in the shot. They are learn tell a story with just one shot. Then there is a static shots and cuts, and a story, and so on, and so on. This is how they progress, step by step. But nevertheless photography is a key. And you already have this key to make a good films! Just start making a moving photography, lol. Note, that Director of photography has a 'photography' in the title :).
Hope this helps somehow. :)
smokey267 but 6 years from now you may become AMAZING
This is really inspirational. Gonna apply these 3 rules - LEARN, MAKE and REPEAT!
Do it! Definitely worth it 🙌
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I really needed this! GOD BLESS YOU!! GREAT THINGS WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN TO YOU!!

One of the most inspiring talk. I absolutely love your channel, truly a breath of fresh air 😊
Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this video! So much good information!
Thanks for this video! I needed this. I'm someone who really wants to get into film making and thinks that everything I do is never up to my standards after I finish it. Thank you and keep up the awesome videos!
Yep just part of the Gap! Keep doing it 👊
Fantastic!
Absolutely everything i need to know i can find on your channel!
Your a genius! Thanks Man!
Thanks for this video. Very inspiring for me as a complete beginner in videography. I'm learning with every minute of footage I shoot. This is just what I needed to hear, to focus on learning and making... I find it frustrating when I look back at footage that I thought would be good but isn't at the standard I want. This video has made me realise that this is actually a good thing. To strive to be better with each video I make.
Thanks man, keep these videos coming. 👍
Wow man i really needed this, sometimes i feel stuck, i took your advice and got my Skillshare membership, thank you for taking your time to give free knowledge to others, the world need people like you, my best wishes my friend!
Man, Love this video and love you haha! Its so true, this applies to more that just film making but everything in life! I found your channel recently and have been learning so much! My wife and I have a small channel and are looking to doing more travel and blog films and I'm learning so much from you! Keep it up , and thank you!
You always be one of the best motivations I have ever got from this platform. Thanks a lot and keep producing really great videos.
Your expressions in this video are very real and feels good..especially showing your past videos.
Thank for your valuable suggestion....Great Words... Learn Make and repeat ... So true...👍😀
thank you so much for such videos. Because I mostly compare myself to filmmakers, just like you! And always find myself in the position of thinking I will never be able to do such videos. But everyone starts at the bottom until they rise and shine!
Love your way of teaching, huge fan man
Yesterday I was shooting a video and experienced a problem I have...my footage just looks so much cooler in my head :c then in real life it's sadly not as good :/
+Teo cr don't worry everyone goes through that! That's the hard part but it gets better and better 🙏
+TravelFeels ok thanks💪 I wasn't planning on giving up😏 :P
That’s the part of filmmaking stage I’m going through now
Man, thanks for all the help you are the best
Thanks man. This encourages me to get out there and start shooting again. Been brushing up on skills, but need to make, lol. So simple.
Love love love! your content. You help motivate me to do better, thank you
What an Inspirational video man.........full of positive energy.....Thank you
Wow... made me reflect on one of the first videos I made. It was a commercial for a motorcycle shop. I was zooming in and out all over the place. I was able to get some very nice shots once the creativity kicked in. Thanks for the video and memories.
totally agree with everything you've said! now, I need to find people in my area who are photographers and see the different types of things the do!
Thanks man! 🙏
Thank you so much for these. You really inspire me to pursue my dream as beginner videographer. Love watching it.
Have recently discovered your channel and it’s fast become a ‘go to’ whenever I have time to learn a bit more about filming and cinematography. I find your approach and encouraging attitude a really positive experience that puts me in a ‘let’s do this!’ Frame of mind. I get that you will be getting some passive income via CZcams for the effort you clearly put into these, but regardless, it’s obvious that you are genuinely passionate about helping others up. Good on you - Respect!
Thanks for sharing. Yes, Norway is the place in the summer!
Great video man! I can relate to this video entirely. I am still at the point where I know I have good taste but it doesn't quite show in my films yet. I know I have improved greatly from where I first started, and I also know that I love learning about filming, cinematography, etc. I am glad to see that others realize that things are very possible even without schooling. I make a point to learn as much as I can everyday when it comes to film making. Thank you for this video.
Amazing stuff Matti !
I was considering putting down the camera. Lost the inspiration. But after watching this, it has given me a sense of direction and rekindled the fire. Thanks for the "Visdom".
You are great!! And this video is so insipiring!
Congratulations!! Both videos are great!!
Pure inspiration. Thanks!
TravelFeels, thanks for the inspiration! Really helpful stuff! There is no greater motivation than to hear 'you've really improved' or 'your skills have come a long way'. This feedback has really pushed me to think of new ideas and projects to film
Thank you so much for this and the link to the Ira Glass video, simply mind blowing and eye opening stuff for me!!! I will now go pick up my camera and go shoot!!! Thanks again!!!
Thank you for your videos. Was 'introduced' to you through Peter and love your work.. Just bought a LUTs pack from your site and can't wait to use it.
very helpful video ! as someone who is just starting out creating my own content and films this definately gives me a good insight into how to make my films a better quality. Thankyou :)
So true!! Thanks for the motivation - great vid!!!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH MATTI HAAPOJA FOR INSPIRING AND MOTIVATE ME MUCH❤🎉🇵🇭
Awesome...A gain Matt. Cheer..!
Well done! Love your style.
Awesome Vid !! Vlogging has really helped me on the MAKE side things since i started with video this year, you get so much footage to play with and learn heaps in the process
Totally! Vlogging is a really great way to learn to shoot and edit and do it often. Learn make repeat! Just leave some time for the learning 🙌
Great video I found this very encouraging. I will definitely taking heed of this advice with filmmaking. It's so daunting getting starting and fending off negative self talk telling us we can't do it when deep down we know we can! I also love Norway and would love to visit not only because of the amazing scenery or proximity to my home, Ireland, but also because it is home to my favourite band a-ha! Best music IN THE WORLD!
Learn - Make - Repeat is great advice, and is probably true in a lot of circumstances! Thanks man :) Cool to see your progression - hope I can show the same progression in 6 years from now, haha ;)
Amazing video! Truly inspiring for someone as for me that is in the beginning of film making.
thank you so much!! Brilliant Video.
Thanks for the article mate am so inspired...

Well said my friend.. Love your video!
You videos are very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Great to see the difference between the two videos. A lot of it seemed to be pacing and editing. Nice work.
Great video. Thanks for the inspiration
You are my inspiration man!
Thank you for this video I needed to see this
Learn, Make, Repeat. Thank you! I will follow your mantra for my own journey!!
Dude thnx for this inspiring video (Y) Keep up the good work!
Really inspiring content Matti! It's really helpful for aspiring creatives like me
Wow, you're awesome. You're really awesome. I really needed this, thank you so much. It's inspiring to hear that you make such great videos (even 6 years ago) with any equipment. I think beginners these days get so caught up on gear/equipment, resolution, higher resolution (4K), even higher resolution (6K), instead of focusing on composition, shots, storytelling. You've confirmed that I have all the gear I need to make great videos. You've definitely earned my subscribe. Thanks!
I wanted to tack on a question. What was your favorite source for learning color grading? I couldn't find any questions below about this. Thanks!
JUST WHAT I NEEDED! THANKS FOR THIS!! :D
Thanks the way you narrated ur journey
Thank you a lot! This is soooo motivational!
Hey Matt, Watch you on Peter’s vlogs and was checking out the Epidemic Sound blog and watched this video! Great stuff! Love your eye and your vids! As for me, vlogging in my channel, a Family Friendly Disney heavy channel and considering giving daily vlogging a go. Thanks for doing what you do, I enjoy your stuff a lot! Merry Christmas!
I am on this journey now. I started this year January. I am willing to put in the 7 years of work that you have put in.
This video just BOOOSTED me. Thanks a lot! I've been making photography for several years now (not professional) Few months ago, I've decided to teach myself filmmaking. On the Internet like you did. And with the help of people like you. I recently started my CZcams channel. Mostly because it gives me deadlines and a way to push harder. Also because you know that other people will see what you're creating, so you wanna make good stuff. Anyway, thanks a lot !
so good!! thank you for that
💜 Inspiring. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Just what I needed to hear. Learn and Make. Love it!
So simple but so important to realize! 🙏
same here
Great advice thank you for this
Having fun is the key answer 😍😍😍have fun /learn /practice and learn
Thank you sir... for this info.
You were very inspiring. Thank you!
Just starting out. We'll see where i am in 6 years. I've always taken photos but never owned a pro camera. Just bought a Nikon D3100, because I'm poor, but i know after lots of reviews its a good starter. Between you and several other photographers/cinematographers, i think I've learned quite a bit to get me started.
this video is really good, thank you !!!
Very informative! It helps me to create a good video. Thank you so much!
Such a cool video and my best friend show me this video. Thank you for the motivation and I love the video edits
Learn,Make and Repeat. well said!
