Too true, for every 1 second of final video I must have 30 seconds of b-roll video and setup time, and yet it's still not enough sometimes. 99% of youtube viewers will never see the work that goes into each video creators make. Such a shame we get hate comments after putting in such hard work.

Hi Matti, love your work, this is a great video! When I film B-roll I usually start from one setting shot, like a medium shot of the subject, then I do all the different details. When an object is involved I try to think about what sounds remind me the most of that object, for example if I'm filming the preparation of a cyclist I'll film the shift whit a gear change, the tire on the road, and the the brakes. With this technique I can bring the attention of the viewer to the subject of the interview firstly with the words of the interview itself, then with sound and lastly with the image :)

That 6Dii RIG is genius ! Love that camera hack to get a shot. Depending on where you're shooting I find it easier to shoot the camera content first, put that together and when you have a clear cut go out and shoot the very appropriate Broll for that video. You don't always have the opportunity to do that (travelling, location etc) but I also get a lot of cool ideas as i'm assembling my on camera stuff. Then you can go out and shoot very specific stuff especially if don't have the time while shooting. Good tips Matti! Happy 2018

When I film Sports I always know I'll need a depth of field shot an establishing shot and a few creative shots for everything going on. Love the whole thing with B-Roll, and something I’ve found pretty difficult to get when I’ve been out shooting... Mostly because I hadn’t planned it as I was on a trip. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
It was also interesting that a tips video I’ve tried to shoot before, but it just didn’t work out, suddenly came to me in B-roll as I was watching. So I can continue to describe what I’m doing and add B-roll to show it in a more interesting and cinematic way. Closer details of setting up with mid shots showing a little more environment.

Great Video of the creative process of filmmaking! Never have enough B-roll. As Matti says, make sure you have enough B-roll that covers all scenarios or flavours of the scenes you are shooting. The minute you think you've got enough or that there are still some shots you want but are debating with yourself to get them, go and take them. Worst thing you can do is procrastinate with film making. You won't regret it later in post when you are struggling to find enough footage to cover that gapping hole in your edit timeline! Been there done that a few times.

Some great tips Matti! We actually hit most of these points in our first video which we are happy about, but it's great to have a solid list of things to remember to stick to when out shooting. We will definitely be implementing some of these when we go to shoot our next travel vlog!

Great video, Matti! I don't know if you've noticed, but you keep getting better at speaking in front of the camera. Killing it, man!

I've been interested in better understanding and using B-roll. This video is both timely and educational. Thanks for doing it as well as risking that lovely camera lens in your opening. :)

Maaan, I was sooo wrong with my first thought for my Matii. Watched Peter's video with you traveling in Canada on Pet's fav place, that lake ;)
You seems so interesting and calmed with some other stuff to tell. So I went on your video from that trip, that lead me to other one and other video to this one. Last what I done : Pressed like and subscribed ! :)

I think proper lighting is the biggest area I need to improve on with my B-roll. Great video!
