congrats!!
TravelFeels happy to be here!
Keep going up bro. We love you, my wife and I watch your videos and let me tell you something: We are from Djibouti in East Africa. Yeah, it's waaaaaaaay far from Canada :P Love and happy New year Matti.
Between you and Pete, u guys have inspired me and taught me so much!!!!!!!!!!! Thank u so much
Love ya matti
That chip bag shot though
It’s gonna start appearing in everyone’s videos now 😂 we gotta go travel somewhere man! 🙌🏻
You should bring this chip bag to the Philippines.... this matches your favorite hotel on an island
it wasnt THAT cool bro
Yes
yeah ive seen it first from peter on his coffee making vlog 2018
Matti I don't know if you have noticed, but lately your videos are one of the best things on this platform!
Haha 😆 thank you for informing me 🙌🏻 much appreciated
Filip Milosheski yes but most of the time its not that hard 😂
I agree!
Truth
I like your stuff too!the only thing that I notice that is in a great deal of youtube clips are jump cuts. One or two I can live with but some people put them every 3-5 seconds and they drive me mad very distracting. Anyway keep up the great content
There is so much setup for a lot of b-roll footage that people never see. Doing a lot of prep work for small snippets of footage. Worth it though. Totally worth it
Yep 100% truth
Too true, for every 1 second of final video I must have 30 seconds of b-roll video and setup time, and yet it's still not enough sometimes. 99% of youtube viewers will never see the work that goes into each video creators make. Such a shame we get hate comments after putting in such hard work.
Lol that chip footage matti! You're starting to loosen up and I'm loving it!
Haha 😂
YOOO I love this title so much! Great vid as always man.
So, I'm getting ready to start my own channel, and through out the planning process, learning how to shoot b-roll, and actually going out to shoot b-roll has been the most fun I've had with my camera in a long time. Even if you don't shoot videos, or vlog, shooting b-roll can be a blast. Great video Matti!
Take a shot of vodka every time Matti says B-roll
New party game 😂
i love that yours and peters videos have been going hand in hand lately! I say this every time but seriously soooo helpful!
kels xx
4:26 "we were ATV'ing behind a snow board"
That would be...exhausing, lol.
Great video Matti. Thank you.
Congrats Matti, Thank you so much for always teaching me something new. Between you & Peter I learned so many cool stuff. You guy’s are the Dynamic dual.
Sooooo excited to find you and Peter recently. I haven't been this motivated to up my own CZcams game EVER. Huge thank you from your newest subscriber!
Congratulations on getting to a quarter million subscribers. Love your content and love being inspired by you. Thank you.
Thanks man! What a crazy ride it’s been
I love and appreciate that you talk more about the creative process in these types of videos, because I can learn the technical side from a lot of different places but in terms of learning the thought process, it doesn't come as easily. This one was simple but very helpful.
No Matti we are so happy having you in this community sharing all that knowledge! Awesome video totally helpful and that first shot pufff no words! sick!
Thanks for a great video. Had this same conversation with a client this past weekend after they asked what "broll" was. I feel like it's the single most important thing you can add to your films outside of great interviews and being technically sound.
Hi Matt, I am new to filming on my iPhone, I have always loved filming family stuff and capturing the moment. It is only now that I am looking at it through a filmmakers eyes and your page is the best one I have found up to now. Well done.
Darren in the UK
There are some interesting points that I hope to implement in the future. I’m doing a bit of b-roll research and this video was quite helpful. Thank you. ☺️
Hi Matti, love your work, this is a great video! When I film B-roll I usually start from one setting shot, like a medium shot of the subject, then I do all the different details. When an object is involved I try to think about what sounds remind me the most of that object, for example if I'm filming the preparation of a cyclist I'll film the shift whit a gear change, the tire on the road, and the the brakes. With this technique I can bring the attention of the viewer to the subject of the interview firstly with the words of the interview itself, then with sound and lastly with the image :)
This channel just gets better and better! Rather than binge- watching Netflix i feel like i need to go through every TravelFeels episode!
Dang thanks so much! 🙏🏻
your channel has shown me so much quality content already and i just joined like an hour ago. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD VIDEOS ! some youtubers end up slacking but i love this content. keep it up .
Love the chip bag shot! Really shows a unique viewpoint. I would suggest taking that same mentality of shooting through items in your filmmaking. It can make everyday shots look dynamic.
Nice. Love the bag of chips hack-so simple and effective for such a fun and unique shot. Thank you Matti!
It’s all about the B-roll! Keep up the great work Matti!!
Matti, you are awsome! Really apreciate your cinematography tips, mate.
You have some really nice techniques. Thanks for teaching all of us how to make better videos.
Hope you have an even more wonderfull year than the previous one.
Matti, great to watch your comfort level mellow, and your style evolve...you're rocking it now! Thanks so much for the practical guidance.
Seriously the best video you have done!! Love it! Whenever I go into a situation where I am shooting a community video I always spend a couple of hours getting the B roll before I even start with the main storyline B roll always comes first because it’s the most important footage to have in your repertoire
Matti, I’m happy you made a video on this. Being an amateur I know that Broll is important but getting good Broll has been difficult for to do. Like you say, It’s all trial and error and I need to realize that I’m not going to start out making sweet cinematic Broll like yours. I need to stop dragging my feet and just start somewhere. Anyway, thanks for keeping me inspired.
🙌🏻
One of my favorite topics! Thanks Matti! The chip bag shot rocks!
Thanks for giving a true explanation of the term b-roll that will be of so much help in my vlogs starting from tonight.
Matti, you're my new favorite CZcamsr! Although I'm not gonna whip out my DSLR and quit my dream job of a nurse to be a CZcamsr film maker, although it's quite a big passion of mine, but you keep my spark going! I just found you and already binged watched 60% of your videos.
This blew my mind. I am extremely creative, however...I am in dev for my new podcast but will also use simultaneously CZcams those podcasts and having clutch b-roll, MAKES the content look sharp...elegant, pure fun or joy. Thanks for this.
One more thing, matti! You are kinda simple teacher, whose method is of teaching is like painting on the wall. Your technique of making someone understand, is👌❤❤❤
You and Peter are the best tutors even I've learned a lot from you guys
I promise a BROLL image played in my head for a video I’m working on while you were talking 😅. Between you and Peter it’s like ideas pop up when your getting great advice. Thanks for the video!
Loved the Chips in the bag...... I love the out of the box..... try and use OUT of the BOX on my stuff to.
Between you and PM, I have learned so much about film making. I am a newbie to videography as of a year ago coming from the photography side and I’m obsessed! I own an insurance agency and have adopted filmmaking to make me stand out more. Thank you for your insight, Matti. 🤜💥🤛
Hi, Matti! You and Peter are awesome. Learning a lot from you guys. More power!
Just the first few seconds made me hit the like-button. You're funny! Love that. I'll take your gold nuggets to hopefully get better in my video editing, too. You are a huge inspiration to me! Thank you, Matti,
Awesome tips man! Always thought Broll is what really shows the persons style. Cool to see you emphasize its importance
That’s for sure 🙌🏻
Your video technique is very cool as well ;)
You and Pete are my favorite for learning and utilizing techniques with my own work. This is awesome. I love playing around with broll
Still killing it with these videos man! I love that your channel doesnt just re-hash what other channels say which can get old after a while. Honestly and transparency are great too! Going to be another good year, I think :)
Yours and Peter's B-roll inspire my B-roll! I'm very excited to utilize your lessons in my videos this year!
Thanks man 🙏🏻
Thanks...I enjoyed that video on 'B-Roll'. I needed the little 'pick-me-up' today. Was up until 3am last night trying to put some video together. I definitely want to get more creative with my b-roll. Good timing!
Saved for future reference. I'm about to start up a passion project with a good friend of mine showcasing various coffee places, and B-roll is gonna be key! Crispy slow-mo latte art pours? Oh yes!
Couldn’t agree more with leaving time for B Roll! I booked a half day with a client today to shoot B roll shots for their interview we filmed!
Great simple tips. Some so obvious but it's great when it is effectively translated.
Hit the nail right on the head! i really did sleep on B roll. Then I'm cryin ' when it's time to edit!! Great content as always!! I almost went out and bought a 6Dmkii today. Picked an 80d to use with my 16-35.
Great job with the chip shot in the beginning! Very inspiring and fun!
Thanks! Just that chip bag shot gave me so many ideas!
My Broll is deffinately a weakness for my vlogs, thanks for the tips, Matti! Keep the awesome videos coming!
I am loving the creativity.
That chip bag shot was great. Very creative.
That 6Dii RIG is genius ! Love that camera hack to get a shot. Depending on where you're shooting I find it easier to shoot the camera content first, put that together and when you have a clear cut go out and shoot the very appropriate Broll for that video. You don't always have the opportunity to do that (travelling, location etc) but I also get a lot of cool ideas as i'm assembling my on camera stuff. Then you can go out and shoot very specific stuff especially if don't have the time while shooting. Good tips Matti! Happy 2018
Thanks man! And yea it would be the best to have your script/content first but sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches. 🙌🏻
Absolutely! If you edit your own stuff long enough you learn a lot of lessons ;). "I should have grabbed that SHOT while I was there!!!" ;)
Congrats on 250k matti!! Been here since 10,000 subs. Thanks for the b-roll tips I will use it when im away for 6 months travelling the world. Btw, love the potato chips idea haha thats legendary!
Matti, love watching the videos you and your brother produce. I'm learning a lot. I wondered, have you ever, or would you ever, considered making a behind-the-scenes video of how you make your travel videos? Like what cameras and techniques you use, how to capture good shots while telling a good story? I would love to see the process and what goes into your decision making when you film. Thanks and keep up the awesome work.
Best 9 min of b roll advice I’ve seen thanks Matti
As usual, good piece of advice Matti! Always a pleasure to watch your videos
When I'm filming I always try to go in with a the entire video in mind so I know what B-roll I'm going to need and what would be nice to have. When I film Sports I always know I'll need a depth of field shot an establishing shot and a few creative shots for everything going on. So I go back and forth from cheerleaders, band, crowd, and players waiting for the right shot to show itself. In short b-roll is filming everything. haha!
Yep that’s the best way!
Another great video Matti! You and Pete shoot the best B roll on CZcams.
Hey Matti! Late to the lesson. However I started photography as an iPhoner, then Droner, got serious, now I have a decent a6300 tele, and kit for now. Been watching you and Peter now for a year on EVERYTHING. You guys are awesome. Love the humor, more importantly I love the unstructured structure to the lessons, you guys totally understand the HDD mind and how to keep attention. Why you guys are at the top. PLEASE keep up the good work. You are taking a guy like me knowing nothing about photography to getting darn good at it. Ok den. Ya Minnesooooootan here. lol Take Care! bye for now.
completely agree with you, wayyy too many people skimp past the b-roll, we've all been guilty of it at times! but it really does make or break a video!
Another useful video. Really made me think about filming more than just one object/area.
Finally have enough time to catch up on your videos. I'm truly inspired by you and i decided to bring my channel back to life and take more photos. Thank you for all the help and videos! :D
Very informative! Thanks for sharing the details on the chip bit - very creative!
I'm just starting up my channel and it's going to be centered around b-roll. This is great man. Thanks!
Yeah B roll is my definitely new focus. Thank you for the inspiration. We are working towards 1000 subs and doing a giveaway when that point comes, less than 30 more to go!
your videos are so helpful, i've always made films but your videos are just making me think of every little thing, gonna be a good year for my videos thanks to you!
Great video again Matti! I couldn't agree more on planning. I spend most of this time on selecting the right track which inspires me to think about the shots and b roll I shoot. Music is like a good spice mix.. it brings the flavour!
Love the whole thing with B-Roll, and something I’ve found pretty difficult to get when I’ve been out shooting... Mostly because I hadn’t planned it as I was on a trip. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
It was also interesting that a tips video I’ve tried to shoot before, but it just didn’t work out, suddenly came to me in B-roll as I was watching. So I can continue to describe what I’m doing and add B-roll to show it in a more interesting and cinematic way. Closer details of setting up with mid shots showing a little more environment.
Thanks for churning my creative brain matter Matti.
Have an epic week
Cheers
JT
Glad your learning man!
Never stops mate, never stops and I love it. Even though you guys make me look long in the tooth ;) Old(ish) dog, new, new tricks :D
I made an interview style video for a college course over 4 years ago, and honestly the wealth of knowledge I've gained since from you and Pete is insane. I'd love to go back and remake that video just to prove the importance of good b-roll.
Don’t worry about remaking just make some new better stuff 🙌🏻
Recycling a chip bag as a lens hood, great idea!
And for the video, thumbs up!
Your B-Roll has always been stellar, but that chip bag opening, truly impressive. Love the creativity! (And yes, I'm watching this SO out of order, but isn't it nice to know you are still inspiring 8 months later?)
I am constantly struggling on how to incorporate b-roll better into my videos. Thank you for this.
woohohohoo that opening shot was really cool! Just like you said, the creative shots stay in the viewer's head :D
Another great video and those one percenters like B Roll help make a video special. Love your work!
BROLL!!! Can't say this enough. See what I did there? BROLL (BRO). Get it? LOL!!! You are the reason why this world is so cool. Love how you tell your stories. I have learned so much from you. @petermckinnon too. You guys are such a big inspiration. You both should do a Master Class on film making and, wait for it.... BROLL! Awesome work! Love the chip bag idea.
i loved the chips intro shot! it was very creative and new.
Thanks so much 🙏🏻
So you were eating chips while peter wanted you to help film him making coffee. Fair enough!
Rishav Bhattacharya haha!
Great job matti love your humility
This was one of the best B-Roll explanations and tips I have seen. Thanks.
My question is how hasn’t your channel blown up yet?! I love your videos!
Haha I’m perfectly happy with slower growth! Loving the journey
TravelFeels Good point, the journey is half the fun.
You really inspired me with that chips bag. Thanks Matti!
Cool opening shot! I love getting b-roll, it's always fun coz they are often the most surprising shots when I edit. I think each team should have a role called b-roll shooter
You and Peter! I wish I had some creators of your guys' caliber close to me to work and learn with.
OMG that chip bag rig is awesome!
Excellent tips Matti! Thanks so much!
b-roll, music, prep, story, a-roll, talent. the list never gets shorter.
Mate your an absolute legend. Love your work.
Great Video of the creative process of filmmaking! Never have enough B-roll. As Matti says, make sure you have enough B-roll that covers all scenarios or flavours of the scenes you are shooting. The minute you think you've got enough or that there are still some shots you want but are debating with yourself to get them, go and take them. Worst thing you can do is procrastinate with film making. You won't regret it later in post when you are struggling to find enough footage to cover that gapping hole in your edit timeline! Been there done that a few times.
Thanks for the tips! Hoping to use some later this week snowboarding
Some great tips Matti! We actually hit most of these points in our first video which we are happy about, but it's great to have a solid list of things to remember to stick to when out shooting. We will definitely be implementing some of these when we go to shoot our next travel vlog!
Awesome 🙌🏻
Great vid Matti! B-Roll is seriously the magic glue for creative storytelling. Great work, dude!
Yep so true 👍
Great video, Matti! I don't know if you've noticed, but you keep getting better at speaking in front of the camera. Killing it, man!
I'm definitely going to try the chip hack. Thanks for tips and ideas
I've been interested in better understanding and using B-roll. This video is both timely and educational. Thanks for doing it as well as risking that lovely camera lens in your opening. :)
Maaan, I was sooo wrong with my first thought for my Matii. Watched Peter's video with you traveling in Canada on Pet's fav place, that lake ;)
You seems so interesting and calmed with some other stuff to tell. So I went on your video from that trip, that lead me to other one and other video to this one. Last what I done : Pressed like and subscribed ! :)
Really good material here Matti. Thanks BTW Good luck with your NEW Studio.
Love it Matti. Thanks for all the advice
I think proper lighting is the biggest area I need to improve on with my B-roll. Great video!
