This is exactly why I think 360 cameras will never replace traditional cameras. It completely ignores the art of composition and framing! Great reminder, I always need to remember the importance of composition!
Yep so true! Its an interesting tool but I dont think it will ever replace traditional film.

WeekendWarriors I agree completely, and that feature is really cool, but simply watching things in 360 I feel like there always seems to be something missing, and that is composition.

If VR cinema ever happen one day it might get there to the point where having a 360 to film might be a cool thing to have. But maybe even there filming an environment of that kind might be better to just build a 3D environment instead of trying to film the 360 environment.

By the way what I mean by VR cinema I mean to be able to turn around and be able to look at everything there is around but not having to have a controller to interact.

I completely agree with you, its basic filmmaking. HOWEVER what is also basic filmmaking, is using composition in the WHOLE shot. For example, that drone shot of the sea where you said there is nothing to focus on, That is the whole point! Its a wide angle of beautiful scenery, your suppose to be in awe with the shot not a subject. You can't have a subject in every single shot, thats not creative.
My film professors always tell me, you have to understand the rules before breaking them. Perhaps he could have dwelled on the creative aspect of the "bad shots".
Why are there even dislikes? You're killing it with these feedbacks, they're very educational and I think most travel vloggers should learn at least a thing or two these days about composition instead of just accumulating excessive gear. Thanks for sharing these tips with us!

I only and only cannot imagine, to go out with no composition in my head. Well, yeah, truth: I made it! But before I hit the record button, at least there I going to think about it! How to work like, without?
It's so funny. I met lots of people who are stuck when it's about composition...not only in film making, but for concept art and backgrounds in general. So many complain about why they don't get better or not getting enough comments and positive feedback. In the end you are good at using your gear, but when the fundamentals are not learned...or you even forgot about that you miss so many good opportunities. I mean it has a reason why Disney (specially the classics)for example are loved by so many...it's not only about storytelling, character design, fx and colours. It is about leading the eye and create a feeling through composition. And even professionals have to get back to the basics sometimes...just to remember how it works. :)

Very interesting. Only one thing I'd like to add: you always explain why ONE shot is good or not so good, but depending of the EDITING a shot that feels off by itself can work as an element of the overall movie. I think what I want to say is that a movie isn't only a succession of independant beautiful pictures.

Hi Matti, I wouldn't use the word "suck" to describe how someone learning might be composing. I know how awesome you are and how much you want to help us grow. You're one of my favorites, and I don't want someone getting turned off by that and not give your channel a chance. They'd be missing out. Keep the content coming!

For the shot at the tent, I think that’s it weird because the clouds are moving towards the centre, but the tent is to the right of centre...there seem to be two focal points. Great tips, thank you!! Xx

Really good feedback on these videos. I think often we place a shot because we think it "will look cool" when in fact it's not achieving anything. For example, the low angle shot pointing at the little rocks while the person walks away on the left. A cool perspective but the net result isn't desirable.
This video also challenges us (me) because I ALWAYS want to avoid overcast, dreary days, yet these reviewed videos show how you can get some really good looks and use colour to make things pop. Awesome.

Helmet mounting an action cam is great for composition. Every where you turn your head to look the camera follows. and having a camera with a Gimbal or HyperSmooth stabilization is key because you don't want people to feel like it is too rough to watch.
i really enjoy watching your videos because you give your honest opinions of each clip for us viewers to understand why you think that way. very very helpful

You make some very strong points! 👌 The only thing I would differ on would be the advice on symmetry. It takes effort to create symmetry, but not as much creativity. I like compositions that took a little more time, effort, and creativity to balance out an asymmetrical shot or design. But that's just a preference of mine.

I think there are some occasions where breaking from the conventional approach to framing and composition can actually help story by conflicting with what the viewer expects. You do want to be careful with experimental shots though as they can really be overdone or unnecessary.

Awesome advice! One pitfall I have fallen into is that it's really easy to want to use footage that was high-effort. Time-lapse footage is really hard to trash because it's difficult to repeat and so much can go wrong. It requires the most planning of anything I have ever shot.

This is the first time I've seen one of your videos. Nice. The reason the tent shot didn't work is that the smooth motion of the moving clouds in the sky gently draw your eyes to the upper center horizon. The disjointed and jerky motion of the people became static noise while my eyes were drawn to the smooth, natural movement of the clouds. - IMO -
Great video. This has been the number one most helpful video I have watched on composition. I love your comparisons and find them super helpful. I look forward to trying out some of these techniques in my content. Now I feel I not only understand composition but know how I can apply it. Cheers.

Unusual compositions can be artistic or symbolic choices. Directors add their own style to their movies by playing with composition, camera movements...

My brother thank for the excellent video content,you are right on point with detail to the point explaining your pros and cons of videography. I am learning so much from your videos and thank you for sharing such priceless wisdom. In short I’m 52 years of age and seen a lot in my life but I have nothing to show forth to it but only in my mind. I want to take what I’ve seen past present the NOW time in my life. My mother was going to school back when I was a kid for photography she had the black room in the closet and I was her project during her time in school she took thousands of pictures of me and life lived and I think I picked that up from her because she let me take so many pictures but I never took it seriously. I have a very creative gift and it’s what I see, hear or just imagine in the moment that what if? Comes to mind. I will be very successful doing this because I love the outdoors people, travel. So kudos my friend and keep up the awesome content.
