It is nice to see a lady building model kits in a hobby that is mainly enjoyed by men. Stick with it and nice work.
I had one of these as a kid. I'm still a kid, but much older. 56 years older. The hay days of NASA were great. We even had real Astronauts come to your grade schools to talk to us. I think they wanted everyone to become engineers or something.
The parts are attached to a parts "tree".
Great videos. Your enthusiasm is infectious. It's wonderful to see someone with such a passlon for something.
You are a breath of fresh air. Don't ever stop
Nothing hotter than Rosie the Riveter build a model rocket. Cute!
Oh sheeit! I built this 5 rocket set when I was 8 years old and it was a new kit in the 1960s. Love you Amy!
It's so much fun to watch you figuring out how to build these kits. I hope you have many young fans watching you and learning how to think about science. You Rock It! :-)
Checking this afterwards WHY IS MY SYNC SO BAD! Sorry, guys. Never seen it this bad. I'll see if I can find a way to magically fix it before the next time! Sigh...
Real life happens. Oh, btw, toothpicks, esp. flat ones, are great for applying glue. Dump a bit of glue in a bottlecap and there you go!
Saw that. Still exciting. Can't wait to see the whole set!
The sync was ok the first time I looked at a bit after the webcast but when I watched later a couple of minutes had been shaved from it and the sync was out so I guess CZcams did some modification.
Get a gluebottle with a needle. Makes putting glue on a sinch. Soaking the sprues in soapy water will remove the releasing agent they use when molding the parts. It helps making paint stick on.
A sprueclipper is also a nice tool when modelbuilding.
I love when you do the livestreams. Sadly i was asleep being on the other side of the globe.
Hope to catch the next one. Keep up the great video's.
Just down to the volume of people watching. CZcams will drop frames and the frame rate to try and keep things going. Just try and get a happy balance for streaming bandwidth if you can.
Did you know that Revell had a contest back in 1967; the top prize was a LIFE-SIZE Gemini capsule. It was won by a kid from Oregon, it is now in the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.
AMY RULES
The Cape Canaveral Monsters - 1960. WOW! 68 minutes. Thats not even long enough for a movie.
Apollo 11 launched on my 5th birthday so that would be my favorite. I remember being allowed to stay up late and watch the "...one small step..." Ad Astra! Amy.
Have a great time putting that set of models together. Built a very similar set back in about 1970-71 time frame. Loved it.
Had another set on non-manned rockets. About 2 dozen on a 9 x 12 inch base. From sidewinders, to sounding rockets to Polaris and V2. Some of those were tiny. Desktop magnifying glass and brushes with maybe 6 bristles to try and paint them. 😄
I have that same kit. Have not assembled mine either. AMT is a company that was well known for their quality model car kits when I was actively building models as a kid.
Oh my gosh - I built that kit when I was a kid in the late 60's or early 70's, although I don't recall all those backdrops. I also built that same Saturn V! What else did I have? A lunar module, maybe 1/16 scale? And others. When I got older, they were put up in the attic, squirrels got in at some point and tore them apart. I was so sad.
You should be on Screen Junkies "Movie Fights" sometime, for a space movies themed show. Or have a regular featured segment about the accuracy of space-based movies.
The lively enthusiasm and train of knowledge after knowledge. Such difference with the dry recall of memorized knowledge and reading off cue cards.
Back in the day, AMT was one of the best model kit makers.
Absolutely! i was schooled hard by my older bro to paint all parts while on the tree, remove each with an x-acto, Spray paint all large body/fuselage parts, and above all, apply glue with a toothpick. AMT is great, Revell is as well, but i am forgetting the other makers. My last model was a 1941 Willys Gas Coupe. Id like to start modeling Vintage Aircraft now....as if i have time for another thing to do. :^/
I also own the right stuff, recently watched first man, and Apollo 13. Can't wait until the Disney + remake of the right stuff goes to DVD and Bluray
Ami you're fantastic. I love your energy and ability to talk about rockets in a really interesting and informative way. Looking forward to future books.
I had this kit when I was young, it's one of the first I put together. How fun!
I had the space shuttle model when I was 12. That was really fun to build.
I knew you'd get this kit eventually! And I love the vintage 40s/50s look with the bandana!
More of these would be great!
It's always good to see another video. Keep up the good work!
I have this! ready to put together. love the show, and the book, and the book suggestions!
I have those models! Always been a model builder - its relaxing, learn about history, gets one away from the fake world of internet/facebook, etc.
Oh hey! I'm in the middle of building this kit!
its called a parts tree, and the stuff your sanding is called flashing. Since the pieces are injection molded there is often a seam. The seam is not flashing, but creates flashing. LOL. You must also remove the seam. There are seams where you can't see them until the model is finished and painted. That is why we use flat colors as a primer. It exposes the seams.
I am kinda bummed I missed this live stream. Very cool to see you working on this kit... I am working on it as well. Hope I can catch the next stream!
Another awesome vid. Many thanks Amy. Just finisherd reading 'who really won the space race' a great book. Well recommended. Am on the look out for that model now. All the best to you and Pete.
I bought that kit at the Udvar-Hazy Center. Looking forward to building it!
I’ve built all but the Saturn V in this kit (save the best for last) and I used neodymium magnets to hold the stages together on the smaller rockets.
Yea, if I made models I would have the stages detachable.
Cool to recognize you on Space’s Deepest Secrets!
Can't believe I missed this, I'm building this exact set right now. It's a pretty tough build, though I'm not really a model guy. Got the Mercuries and the Gemini done and painting the Saturn V
Very cool. Boyd Crompton over at TrekWorks built this set a couple of years ago. Fun to see another build.
On the topic of hypergols, and rocket fuels in general, you can do a lot worse than starting with John D Clark’s book “Ignition”. It is aimed for an audience with some technical background in chemistry, but it also functions as an interesting memoir of rocket chemistry and gives you an appreciation of the value of a good pair of running shoes.
Amy you are literally the coolest young lady on the internet!!
Awww you looking great as per usual
This is tempting... I think I will now look for model rockets... It's been... Wow... It's been decades since I have made a model....
keep up the great work !
Fun build !!
Loved that "Lea antes de iniciar" spanish pronunciation!!!
I've built this one before. It's a great kit!!
Wing Lem can u link it
What a time to be live.
Awsome vid Amy......remind me to set you up with sone up to date modelling tools. Sanding sticks, thin modelling glue (nobody use that tube glue anymore), clamps, tweezers etc.......
Dean Shaw You forgot the Third Hand and the elbow lamp with magnifying lens... ;-)
Thank you for your video❤
Nice build vid. I'd like to add a recommendation I didn't see in comments, a sprue cutter.
Very useful for cutting parts off the trees with as little excess plastic as possible. They look a lot like wire cutters.
When you construct styrene plastic model kits, you should always use Plastruct Plastic Weld, a liquid adhesive in a bottle, with a brush. I works so much better than "model glue".
You’re Awesome!! Love models
I am so smitten with you. Dang...
And your hair was on point !
Working so hard!
wow thats 5 kits in one box! steady on the glue Amy or you'll have a very tall Saturnvb1mercuryredstoneatlasgeminititan2 to paint. I watched earlier and
saw some pieces go together and Space Cat Pete look in but my connection
was bad, look forward to watching post flight, love the new/old Kits, good
choice.
That AMT set is a nice kit - almost worth the price just for the Saturn IB.
OMG! I have that one too! :D
Senpai Amy is back!
Amy you have never made a video I did not like you talk about things that interest me you talk about things that happened when I was a child I was born in 1959 so I remember Mercury I remember Gemini and Apollo and I was never so proud in my life even though I was still a child as when there was a human being standing on the moon it was just so awesome. Anyway I have rambled enough I love your videos they are always fantastic and this one is no different thank you.
willy mack : when I was 6, I was given the GI JOE mercury capsule. The kit came with silver suit, spacewalk pack and umbilical chord. As well as a 45 RPM record of John Glen’s friendship 7 mission.
It’s been ~50 years or so......, I miss that feeling of having that toy.
AV8B AV8r check out the Mercury Joe series on you tube for launches of that same Hasbro model with multiple camera views!
nice try, Ms.Amy !!!
reminds me of my younger days putting those models together. it took a lot of patience, but finally finished satururn V rocket, all three stages and lem. took over year. wish i still had it.
after a year when glue dried, it fell all apartments when cleaning.
grrrrr...
Especially cute today...!
Did you ever continue this build? I can't find part 2 anywhere?
Ah bummer, wish I could have caught this live
I just bought the AMT Saturn V today.
Have you considered the hobby of FPV quadcopters?? I feel all space enthusiasts should enjoy them!
i am not sure if this is still done, but farmers used hydrazine as an herbicide for tobacco, as well as other row crops, like soybeans...probably was stopped due to groundwater contamination, but i am unsure.
lol. I had that kit when I was a kid.
I missed this video while it was streaming. This was interesting hearing that you were at the Eisenhower Museum.
I thought is was curious the idea to soak the model in soapy water. What would that do to the plastic?
I enjoy hearing all the technical terms that you have for the model pieces.
i am Your biggest fan !
Good Tube
Tamiya brand makes good masking tape for scale models in several widths. There are some really good model builders and pro painters in the LA area. I'm sure we'd be happy to help you in any of your modeling endevours.
NOM
And we're still waiting for Part 2...
Damn! I missed it. Well at least I can wach the recorded video.
Loved your book "Escaping The Chains of Gravity" thanks. Sequel? Someone else commented that Canadians might pronounce 'Decal' Deck'ull, as the rest of the English speaking world does, but you say Dee-cal, the Americanised version. Guess you have been assimilated? "Resistance is useless". Will enjoy watching this build :-)
In memory of Voldstock...Vodka!
Rosie the Riveter makes a model rocket
Technically, they are "runners". The nubs you are sanding off are from the "gate(s)" to each part. But my new favorite term is "parts jail" :)
Where did you buy this awesome kit?
I took a picture of the Apollo 15 capsule at the museum of the united states air force on sunday i would like to send it to you. I was there to see the new display of the Memphis belle.
There was a mercury/atlas model kit that I built several times. It was the rocket and launch pad. I think it was a revelling model. Have you seen this one?
Hii Amy can you a video on Lipstick rocket
I don't know why I keep getting notified you're live streaming now
You making rockets come alive.
From right to left:
• Empty bottle (black cap)
• Bullet
• Retro-looking (?) toaster
• Plate of cornbread looking things
• You
• Microwave (built in)
• Towel dispenser
• Water-filter-looking-thing-(y)
• {built-in/recessed} lighting.
• …plastic model…
Bene Butterbean that plastic model is a saturn v
Edit:sorry its either a saturn v or a gemini
This is just like my childhood when I still had friends to come over play LEGO now they are too busy making a living. [Fill this space with more feels] é_è
Good grief, is that kit still being made ? I had it back in about 1970! Very good too.
:( I missed it while playing overwatch. sorry I missed it.
July 31 I will be at NASA Cape Canaveral To watch the Parker Space Probe Launch. I will be live on Facebook during the Launch.
I love how fast you talk! You are a great teacher and I think you are cute too! haha peace luv! /: ) ===+bwb
Haha thats my imoji sideways.. Bwb is my club blackwater boys! You have a great sense of humor! Thanks for not being to cool to respond to a fan! Keep them going! I love it! Learning a lot! Peace luv! /: ) === +hat eyes smile beard faith in the bwb... Get it? My signature of sorts! Be good!
Nothing hotter than beauty and brains. And what a lovely voice. Thanks for all your efforts! Whenever I encounter a conspiracy nut I shove one of your videos in their face. Peace! xo
Not as much to your vintage tag, but there's a 1/200 Space Shuttle by both Lindberg and Hasegawa available.
I love seeing you building model kits. Many of us who are fans of Spaceflight build these. I invite you to attend our gatherings where we display our builds, swap kits, and talk. You can find the local groups and events thru the International Plastic Modelers Society Web Site. Once a year we gather for a National Convention where we have guests come and speak, building seminars; and the Worlds Largest Hobby Shop is open for those 4 days. Wonderfest in Louisville, KY is another convention that is just Space and Sci-fi modeling. You would fit right it. Many guys and gals just like you, and many have the same interest. I have met folks who built the Saturn 5 an 1B, Atlas, and even Titan II & III that build model kits as well. Hope you can join us sometime. If you ever decide to come east to National AIr & Space Museum, I know the chief archivist and can get you "Behind the scenes" tours....
I missed it!
ROCKETSSSS
I built that same kit and I can never get my Saturn V to stage one at a time, it always stages all the stages at the same time.
She Looks exactly Like Kristen Connolly from "Cabin In The Woods".
Hahahah you said (about) !!! Proof Canadians do say it😂😂😂😂😀
Funny Amy
Anyone know where I can get this kit?
Barry Taylor hobby lobby
Would love the heard an explanation of "Steely-eyed missile man"....
Any thoughts on Alan Bean's death?
So sad we didn't just keep the Saturn IB. So versatile.
How did you get so obsessed with astronautics?
