Joe touched, indeed transformed, the lives of who knows how many tens of thousands in his city, state, country and beyond. He started an enterprise on a shoestring or less -- a $330 grant and some charitable donations -- that grew into a publishing company, traveling mission, growing institution, and, most important, a blessing.

We were not allowed in meetings until a member could confirm we had completed the steps. This member sponsored us into AA. But we worked the steps prior to being allowed in meetings (most by themselves).
What a sponsor was and did is nothing like today. Could be bad (co-dependency) or could be good (great support group)
