Spencers are neat shotguns, particularly fascinating how they combine the carrier, breech block, and ejector into a single giant block of metal. Surprisingly simple mechanically but visually has a lot going on with all the exposed moving bits.
The decocker lever also serves another purpose which was more relevant in the old days of dodgy primers; it allowed you to recock the gun in the event of a dud, light strike, or hangfire without having to open the breech and potentially suffer an out of battery detonation. Obviously that's no longer an issue with today's more reliable ammo.
I have one of the later Bannerman guns, and it is as nice to shoot as it is to look at. Wowza!
140 years old and still a looker. Very nice.
Nice old gun. Sight picture must be interesting with the ejector on top.
You would really like one of the new Ohio production Ithaca M37 shotguns. Extremely high quality American utilitarian beauty.
Will see if I can hunt one down
The ithaca 37 is my favorite, john browning design, id love to see a review of one here.
When I turned 12 for Christmas I was given a New Ithica model 37 Featherlite 20 ga full choke 28" ribbed barrel. Now I am 53 and still own it its a gorgeous firearm.
@@kevinmaughan4290 I have an old one where there is not a trigger disconnect sear so you can just slam fire rounds. Only problem.is the cutts compensator barrel which has such pronounced blast that the gun is uncomfortable to shoot!
@@pbgd3 they are a great looking gun, even watching the old 80s movies they always had an ithaca,
I could not agree more... Fantastic classic, ounce again Thanks for everything
Thank you Johnny! I have never heard about this shotgun before, it's so good to learn new things! :)
I can't help thinking of Del boy clay pigeon shooting!
I have to agree with you, it's beautiful in a very unique way.
I love the oldies as much as the next but I still like the John Browning designed Ithaca Model 37 slide action. Remington manufactured the design as well. They are light, strong and reliable.
I've always liked the Winchester 1897. You don't realize how slim it is compared to other pump shotguns until you hold it. Slam fire is always fun too.
@@dmytro732 Another John Browning classic!
Gotta love the Ithacas without the disconnect, slam firing into garbage is a blast
Actually seen a Spencer pump in 8 bore/gauge last year at a auction, they had no documentation on how it came to be. For a 8 bore it was surprisingly slim wish I could track down the listing as it was quite interesting to see.
I bet that was epic
@@tgsoutdoors Most likely a prototype or something of the like. Before covid hit we actually had a company who were going put a 8 bore load into production but loading components being in short supply postponed that project.
I have my great grandfather's Winchester Model 1897, It is worth noting that (in America), the early pump actions were not seen as economy guns at all. My great grandfather could have had a mid-grade Parker double for the cost of that Winchester in 1903, so they were certainly not cheap. The build quality of early pump shotguns in general was very good, IMO like the Spencer, they are wonders of mechanical design when you consider the age and complexity of their workings.
Superior firepower is not everything however. Or at least it was not for my great grandfather, who by all accounts did not immediately bond with the Winchester. An early outing with his new marvel in late October 1904 saw him managing to find the only 5 pattern sized gaps in the midst of a flush of geese that must have numbered over a hundred. He blamed the cartridges. Proving yet again, the more things change...
Ohh, very nice. Old guns are so interesting! Have you ever seen a Burgess folding pump shotgun? They're ludicrously cool. The pump is part of the grip.
Forgotten Weapons is a great channel isn't it?
Marvelous gun ✅
I remember finding one of these at a small gun shop here in the U.S. Also, these were made in Windsor, Connecticut (the “OT” is actually a “CT”, short for the state of Connecticut).
Oh no!! Now I want one!!
Gotta love the weird guns out there.
You can not beat the dulcet tones of the click clack . Hard to get in Oz now but I am one of the lucky ones . Just can not cycle as fast as I need to on sporting clay. If I win lotto tonight I will buy you one for xmas because that is pure class
Beautiful.
I love how clanky it is
Great to see this, about only the second video on CZcams of a Spencer.
I have one of these, just a slightly later model.
A Spencer -Bannerman, model 1896. Serial number 156115 and it has James Dunbar engraved on the right hand action side and 13290 stamped on the tang.
A review of the Bannerman company of New York would be interesting, at one time they were the biggest army surplus store in the world.
I KNOW WHERE THEY HAVE ONE FOR SALE.
That is a gorgeous looking pump…
Knew you’d approve
lol I did see that in the auction and looked up the history as I had never heard of one. Thanks for the review chaps.
Go on Jonny treat yourself the mrs doesn't have to know
She knows all
Everyone I know has a Remington 870 of some sort. I own a 870 express now 30 years and it works just great. The Winchester 12 and the beretta silver pidgin are a few more.I owned a Beretta silver pidgin pump 12 gauge. Affordable work horse guns.
love it , very nice indeed
Would look better with fine acanthus scroll
At 6:00 I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure that'd be Windsor CT, or Windsor, Connecticut when it came to the stamping on the barrel or action. Who's to blame, the over 130 year old process used to stamp or the over 130 years of life that firearm has seen? Great content all in all!
Epic! 🤘🏻
Very nice.
In the 1980’s I inherited my wife’s uncles Winchester 1897.After the Hungerford incident I had it restricted and nitro proofed as the build date was 1899/1900 and was black powder proofed only.Itcame back proofed as a 70mm magnum.!
1897s were always meant to be smokeless. The 1893s, which look almost identical, are meant for use with blackpowder ammo.
That is quite an amazing design. 1887? Wow……
Mike @USOG would love to see this!
Soooo are you going to make a bid? If so and are successful... We definitely need a shooting vid 😀
I/we are mulling it over. Estimate of 5-700 but think it will go for £900-£1200.
£1500 including commission is enough to stop and think.
The OG even before John Browning.
This is a very neat gun have you ever shot a ole lever action rifle Johnny you know the western style action rifle. More fun shooting all these yester year's guns I love them all. Thanks for sharing this pump gun. Good day Johnny
I have been blessed to shoot a number of early lever guns, they are epic fun.
Now that is a swan necked grip I actually like!
Extremely nice lines
@@tgsoutdoors Stunning. Bit sad they didn't file up a proper trigger guard though
Does it come in realtree and orange for formal game shoots 🤣
FDE cerakote not being a factory option was the true reason for its lack of commercial success
You will be bidding against me Johnny! I've bought one of the Charles Lancaster finished Spencer pumps before - they imported 20 actions in the white and fitted Damascus barrels and tubes and walnut stocks. I didn't know that Watson Brothers did the same. You can see the stock is far too plane for the market they were trying to sell to, so likely a replacement. I think it's the Gough Thomas book which calls this gun one for a "hot corner".
Do you ever come across the ithaca 37 over there? Here in the states they were very popular in the north east and were (pre covid) very affordable used. When I want to shoot something diffrent I grab one of my early 50's model 37 feather lights and turn heads at the trap range
When I was buying my first gun the shop had a Winchester Model 12, an Ithaca 37 and a Mossberg 600at.
For better or worse I bought the Mossberg.
Often sorry I didn't go for the Ithaca, because you never see them now (Ireland)
Looks to be a sort of pump operated Martini action.
I get the steampunk appeal of it, but the 1897 has that, too, while earning its stripes as a practical design. But hey, I have an early Marlin pump in my collection, and that design definitely had its issues.
I think the golden era of pumps is right before the industry adopted the lessons of brutal efficiency from WWII, and epitomized by the likes of the Winchester Model 12 and Remington 31. The quirks had been ironed out, yet they were finely fitted for the sake of smoothness and speed.
I think it’s the martini action inspiration that endears me to it so
@@tgsoutdoors the quirky design combined with high degree of finish does give it a malty/hoppy appeal.
( Hunt music intensifies )
back when they started switching to smokeless powder I think Winchester offered to trade newer shotguns that could handle smokeless if people would give them the old spencer 1882s and they destroyed them so people wouldn’t accidentally shoot smokeless through the old shotguns
I believe Annie Oakley is pictured using one!
Annie Oakley use to shoot Colt Lighting rifle. Similar look, but more elegant lines. Uberti makes a reproduction for about $1200 in 44-70, 44 magnum and 45LC calibers.
Do they have the permits from the atf to ship to the usa
Silly you just can't put a plug in it to limit to two plus one. I guess you have to play the cards you're been dealt. Would be nice if it came home. 😉🇺🇲
A restriction and appropriate proof mark is an option, just need to come up with a semi permanent fixture
Would of been nice to see that gun in action.
Such a nice gun, so Jonny did you win it?
3 weeks to auction date!
@@tgsoutdoors good luck!!
Very nice choice of fire-arm :) pity if buy a gun because the UK law would want ya to strip it down till its useless...
What do you mean?
What is the song in the beginning
“…you can go ahead and have this nitro proofed” / rilly
😍😍
What is that outro song
It’s hunting time boyyyyss
Where is the short version of this gun
Hang on, Ian McCallums changed!
I didn't know "utalitarian" was a word.

It's the ancient halo shotgun
1882 ??
Why shit on American guns? There is so much innovation and history to love and admire.
You're a sensitive boy aren't you.
You've been drinking. Must've been. Apart from the Damascus barrel, it's a monstrosity. No bids mate, all yours. No commercial success in England? Whaaaaaaattt, no way?
How is it a monstrosity?
@@letsgoraiding 😃 James, Sir, just look at it. It's like an Indo-Russian collaboration. Horrific.
Umm, no…..
Meh! It's no 1897!
Would be an interesting video concept - practical Shotgun course through a trench, shot with M97…. In uniform
No self-respecting Englishmen would carry a Winchester model 12. God forbid
The only marched pair of guns I own are 120 rangers
@@tgsoutdoors shows up on a hunt day with fitted cases casually extracts 2 120 rangers and proceeds to have someone load for him.
Quite popular you must be ;)
I have a matched pair of CSMC rbl28s and it bothers me Im always trying to use them equally to keep them in similar shape. When I really just need the one.
