Pump Action at the Clayground

- Whilst out filming some time ago, we took the opportunity to test this rather epic Mossberg 500 build belonging to one of our good friends. It seemed fitting to let American Dan try it first!
As much as this gun was not an easy gun to shoot - it did look rather epic!
Stay Safe and Enjoy!

You would be surprised at how many of us Brits use pumps at clay grounds. Yes it's a bit more challenging and there is some snobbery but the fun factor is the best bit. Mossberg 500 with 1980s corn cob furniture and 590 tactical. It's not just for pest control 👍🏻
It's also pretty fun to watch them strain to contain their hissy fit 😂
Just getting into clay shooting and I can't understand this snobbery around pumps. I grew up on Arnie and Rambo movies, so is it really bad that I wanna feel that "chuc-chuc" between shots?? :)
the uk gun scene is pretentious
I originally started shooting clays with a Remington 870, doubles took time to master, but it is fun.
I got a Mossberg 590 I use very regularly for clay shooting... yes it does have Magpul furniture and yes I am in the UK and it does get some frowns but I shoot well with it and it’s tons of fun!
I had a Winchester Model 1200 as my first shotgun and used it regularly on clays. I just brought a magnetic cartridge collector. I tell you one thing, you might get funny looks but everyone wanted a go and they all had big smiles racking that slide.
At last, a video for me🤣🤣🤣 Use my Mossy on a regular basis at my local shoot, I just enjoy the whole “Pump” experience . Great vid, thanks👍
I don't understand gun snobbery. I own pumps, semiautomatics and over/unders. Variety is the spice of life.
Shots a 50 Sporting charity shoot on Sunday last.
The group of 5 had two Blasers, a Beretta and a Browning, all of which ranged in price from €2000 to probably €5000.
Then there was me with a Mossberg 500 :D
I shoot my Mossy at the clay grounds regularly. I get lots of side eye, but I am quite proficient with it. Just takes getting used to.
Yup as do I! 88 slugster, cylinder bore and I seem to shoot better than most of the 'Beretta crowd' I do hear a lot of comments about it and I think most are envious of the pump action fun.
I have never had a problem shooting doubles with a pump shotgun. It is just a matter of timing. The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are American classics. They are almost indestructible. Canoe races are often held to determine which gun makes for a better boat paddle. I own a Browning over under, a Beretta and a Remington semiautomatic, however, my favorite is my customized Remington 870 with a wood stock and forearm. That gun is just plain fun.
Mossberg 500. That thing is made to run in the mud. I use one for geese because I don't have to worry about abusing it.
Love the 500. It might not be the best at everything but it’s not bad at anything. I bet it’s better at clays than a handmade Italian clay O/U is at what the mossberg is designed to do.
If you payed 10k for a gun you’d get snobbed by the guy who payed £10,001
In that crowd so who cares. Pump actions are straight up fun to shoot.
Dude exactly. A 500 or an 870 do everything adequately. Prices have gone up now, but for a long time you could just go to walmart and get one for like $300. Hard to beat the fun/utility per dollar ratio there.
Ive got a mossy stock version. Used it shooting a competition at our local ground lol. Didn't win the competition but won some bet money cos the others in my team reckoned i couldn't pump it quick enough for the pairs. But was no problem lol. Great guns
Just bought a pump Winchester sxp
For a laugh. I just clicked with that gun and my scores rocketed (relatively speaking). It was as if the gun chose me. It’s a dream to shoot and that sound just makes me grin. I wish it hadn’t happened as i do prescribe to a bit of gun snobbery but my go to clay gun of choice is now my pump (above my o/u and sxs).(Im from UK)
You guys almost had time for a cuppa tea between shots the way you were pumping that thing. LOL
I love a pump! A friend brought one to the clay ground and I was having an awful time but he let me have ago on a stand a cleared the stand fell in love with it
We ( four friends) who shoot clays every Saturday morning, Covid-19 permitting, all have pumps and regularly have a "fun pump" week... Sim pairs are not really an issue, as we are all familiar with our individual pumps.
They are a fun tool, they are just as capable of breaking clays as they are dispatching pigeons or rats.
I would recommend that every buys one and has a play.... Ignore the SNOBS release the fun.
Our pumps are:
Browning BPS
Benelli Nova
Mossberg 500
Winchester SXP
😍😉
Thanks mate that's what I was looking for,I shoot clays on private land with a mate and we don't really keep a score unless it's obvious lol which it often is hahaaa
Oh forgot to give the Shooting ground a shout out.....
KSG Leicestershire , very friendly, great ground 👍
The mossberg is quite obviously the superior gun 😉
@@mickbrown7132 unfortunately the barrel must be bend on the guy's I shoot with !!! 😉
The BPS on the other hand is of a superior quality and misses very few 😂😂
@@markfarrow823 yeah right, do us a favour. My mossberg rules the shoot and you know it 😂
On a side note, most the the gun dog trainers I know train with a pump action shotgun while working with customer's dogs. The trainers feel it's theoretically safer not having a live round in the chamber after firing a shot. You have to actually pump the gun to put another live round it.
Been running 50 straight in skeet with a pump for years ...
The sound of pumping a mossie is delicious
Well funny light hearted looked great fun 👍
I use a Winchester sxp cheap and more fun. I like the extra connection you get with the gun when working the pump. I’m a none competitive shooter though its purely fun and fresh air.
Looking to settle on a Rem 870 express as a forever gun. Thanks for the channel.
Lol. Too funny. Maybe I needed the red dot? Be on the lookout for an unsporting clays bit from me in the future. 😉
Do it dan
Red dot is next on my list to do
I've shot clays with the Aimpoint S-1 on a O/U it only really assists you with incoming or outgoing targets. I found it more of a hindrance with crossers but it's amazing how your eyes work keep both eyes open and you wouldn't even realise you had a sight on other than the red dot floating through the air.
Great bit of kit if you are shooting birds or ground game I expect though
My buddy and I both shoot pumps at our clay ground, he with a Mossy and me with a Hatsan 20 bore. Makes a change from the Greener GP's and SxS's. Great fun!
You can definitely hear that action in that 500 is brand spanking new. Wait until you've got 1K-2K shells through it, it will be very slick but not anywhere near as nice or slick as a Wingmaster. I shoot trap with wingmaster exclusively. Shot doubles this past weekend. Good times....
I love my mossberg590 and yes i too have all the magpul furniture lol i also got a remington 870 both are amazing shotguns
Moss berg 500 with Magpul kit?
In our clay shooting crew we tend to go for the Wingmaster, one of which has been fitted with Magpul furniture.
Funnily enough the pump action tends to be a good training aid, as the noobs tend to think too much about where to point the barrel and how much lead they should be using instead of shooting instinctively. The pump forces the noob to concentrate on racking and mounting, and it can be much more fun to shoot.....
Interesting perspective, thanks!
You´re gonna have a hard time to keep up shooting Sporting with a pump, that´s for sure :-D
Have seen somebody use a pump action at a small clay ground I attend , it was his second round on the stands and used it just because his scores didn’t count
A little unfair that you didn’t take the rail off 🤔. I can’t hit anything with a sling wobbling about so I’d have had to take that off as well.
I love shooting trap with my Mossberg 500! More challenging equates to more fun and skill development
I’m after a pump action the problem is I’m left handed how much of a difference would it make if I had a right handed one? I know the cartridges will eject across my eye line is that a problem
We have a pump day with the guys I shoot with there a aa and aaa clay shooters and they don’t drop much on pump days
If I saw someone with that at a clay ground, I think good on them😂 what do you think Johnny?
lol ! A clay zombi invasion !
Out of interest was the 500 cylinder choke or a multi choke version?
Chop the barrel down to 18.5”, and take the mag tube plug out and you’d have an ok self defense rig.
Family owns a clay range in the US, can’t say I’ve seen anyone using a fore end grip for clays.
Appreciate seeing y’all expanding your horizons though.😂
Unfortunately in the UK there are restrictions on the shotguns we can own, and in the case of the pump (at least on a standard shotgun licence or what we call a section.2 gun) it must have a barrel of no less than 24" and the magazine tube is permanently crimped to restrict the capacity to a maximum of 2+1, there is no plug. Even my 590 has a 4" extension welded in place as originally it came in to the country with a 20" barrel.
It’s hard to not grin when your cheap pump hits more targets than your buddy’s fancy O/U. But I have a kind heart and I’m willing to trade with him 24/7.
Wow what a amazing looking gun. It’s fun to shoot it to
An epic one indeed
Thankyou again for the Loan
Any time
We have a guy that shoots one at the local clay club - most folk are interested in asking him questions about it - difficult to shoot fast pairs though 🤔🤔
That wouldn't be the Fareham club by any chance?
@@SWATStrachan No, West Yorkshire
@@dale_ch Ah, so I'm not the only one that draws that kind of attention with my choice of clay gun!
Would love to see your review of a Mossberg over and under.
What does that said pump retail for.
Seems an OK starter to keep the semi auto company in the safe 😉😂
When possible, could you review a husspower pump? Maybe the 20 gauge mossberg?
The 410 makes a mess of rats! 😃
Try shooting a drilling at a clay ground. There will always be some old geeza who starts complaining the barrels are too short until you show him the club rules that 24" is allowed.
Tell ya what I think bout a guy with a pump, now there's a guy who like to have fun!
Im getting a remington 870 tac I think they're way cooler than stuffy old over unders and side by sides and the plus 4's lol 😆
Was this filmed at Laines ?
I used a pump at the clay ground always benelli Nova.
So does my friend Gary but he used to use ( at a sporting clay range) a Mossburg 20 gauge bolt action. He is quite proficient with either one.
I shoot my Winchester SXP (in camo but sans leather jacket and boots) at my local clay ground but nobody bats an eyelid . If it's a shotgun then anything is allowed there as long as you pick up your shells afterwards.
I hate it but absolutely love it
I used a pump with a 18inch barrel smoked clays and had fun
Yes I would have on a clay shoot how much do you sell them in the shop
Gun new was about £530 was wood one at start of its life. Magpul stock and forend are £195
@escape.suburbia couldn't even hit one.. Was @a.m.bushcraft_n_hunting there to shir him up?
The Somerset Hunters still better than you all day long 👍
@@escapesuburbia1594 haha finally worked out how to buy the higher tier. Hahaha
When are we going to see the mini rifle and LBP reviews? 😂
Belíssima
Cool
Here in Belgium none of the clay ground allow pumps or semi...even slings are forbidden.
I mean, why? It's just snobbery. I hate that shooting culture in Europe and especially the UK is full of fudds and snobs.
@@AcidTripwire the excuse is safety. A broken over and under or side by side is clearly safe and unloaded. With a semi or pump its never really clearly visible that the gun is safe.
@@mosseltje Ehh locking open the action and inserting a chamber flag is a pretty clear indication of a clear weapon.
This is hilarious. You might’ve been more fond of something classic like an Ithaca 37, but I suppose that wasn’t the point.
I love my Winchester 120 ranger - but as you say, not really the point 😂
I take my mossberg 500
Love popping clays with it
Prefer it to my O/U or SbS
Because even if i miss, dont care , been pumping 🤣💥
I had one many years ago when i could not afford anything else. As soon as i could afford to change it ............i did.
Why does it have tactical furniture on it and a bird barrel? Lol awesome video guys.
Minimum barrel length is 24" if you want it on a shotgun certificate.
Scoe88 isn’t it if you want it full stop, I thought less than 24 inches was break action only on an fac, pumps and semi still have to be 24 even on fac.
Regulation I know it just looks ridiculous.
@@HJDore Yeah, hence my usage of 'On a shotgun certificate'
@@scoe5908 Which indicates you could have it shorter on an FAC, which you can't.
What's the song? I like it :)
Love my Winchester 120 ranger. Paid £120 multichoke and 3” magnum what else you need
Epic guns
TGS Outdoors agree 100%
Just took mine out clay shooting for the first time, definitely not gonna be shooting in any competitions anytime soon but it was damn fun.
Wanna see what a Mossberg 590A1 can do ?!?! Just watch Hickok45 … and what’s up with that foregrip … hahah
Tacticool pap on a turkey gun? As a U.S. resident I am confused.
You may not realize, the tacticool type are regarded in the same league as fantasy sword owners and people who role play at comic book conventions. Only much more dangerous. Not a good combination.
Hold my beer...

Also known as my Franken-gun.
Too much snobbery at clay grounds its a place to de-stress and have some enjoyment so you should use what you want to what is fun too as we'll i got eyeballed by a toff with his Perazzi cus I shoot a Browning Maxus but the fool had all the gear & no idea 😂 thought he was some kind of Olympic shooter i just ignore those fools and smile at them as im enjoying hitting & missing the clays 👍
This is the equivalent of an American doing a bad British accent
Wish we could have pumps 😕
You can't? Jeez...
We're fighting an AR-15/AK ban here in Canada, but all shotguns and 90% of hunting Semi-auto;s are still legal. I just finished building a tactical bullpup 12.
What's wrong with a double? They're fun to shoot.
Boxcar The Husky have miroku over under and a side by side why not have it in the safe to have fun with
@@dazzer8367 because that's a waste of money.
@boxcar the husky it’s worth money and I can resale it if I wanted. Not a waste of money if I use it and have fun. Why not buy the the cheapest over under u can get anything more is just spending more just because?
@@dazzer8367 the people I know that buy these guns use them, they worked hard to buy them and they didn't buy a high quality gun to stick in a safe or on a wall, It's like buying a brand new car and letting it sit.
I worked hard to buy this gun and I use it for winter as I don’t like semi atuo guns. It’s more like having a motorcycle you ride in the summer and have fun with it ppl keep them in storage over winter so that’s a waste???? I brought a mossberg as I am young enough to keep that gun for many years to come.
And Johnny is the biggest snob of them all ,even if he pretends not to be.
Yes, more than likely.
I’d have no problem whatsoever seeing one at any of my local grounds, Yeah there are more traditional options but not everyone is a traditionalist and how many people don’t bother supporting their local clay ground because they only have one shotgun and aren’t welcome because of the action type? Breech flags can’t be used to show safe!
Learn to shoot a pump shotgun and you can be good with any shotgun
"isn't that what Americans do"
I wouldn’t give a fuck. Same as I don’t care what a shooters watch is, or their car. Each to their own and people need to stop giving a toss what someone else uses. They may well be 10 times the marksman you are and isn’t that what it’s about?!
Shoot my supernova all the time at the range.
union310 Scotland Just fitted a picatinny rail for a reflex scope too now :D YeeHaww!
@@bearstudio2023 oooh where did you get the rail from and is it easily removable? Might like to upgrade my supernova, wonder if the rail is available in camo too?
@@chrisbrown6431 Yeah I got it from Ant Supplies and yeah it just bolts on to your rail and can be taken off in a couple of minutes.
Not camo but easy enough to hydro coat at home.
Erm definitely my snobbery but I’d be like erm no thank you
ghastly
Is this how the Brits view all US pump action shotguns? I have to say I've never seen a vertical grip, light, and an empty rail on a pump before. Because of this outright insult of a shotgun, All US citizens have the right to make all of the terrible British accents they want. Try the bolt action savage 212 with a red dot in order to redeem yourself and all of Britain.
That vertical grip is a bad idea on a pump, you'll eventually break the action bars...
Says who? I've had a vertical pistol grip on my shotgun for over 8 years now and the action bars have not been bent or cracked or anything.
The Mossberg has twin action bars, and I've been running a vertical grip for all the years I've had mine, and if anything it cycles better now than when I bought it. Mossbergs are built like tanks and are more than tough enough.
@@SWATStrachan My Ithaca 37 has a single action bar and I have a vertical pistol grip forend on it. No problems whatsoever.
@@AK-47ISTHEWAY I've seen 4-5 guns come in with broken pumps that had vertical grips on them, when I worked in a gun shop...
@@SWATStrachan I've been at lease 1 Mossberg with a broken pump caused by a vertical grip...
Er, no.
Possibly the most unenthusiastic "get some" ever.
