The KMT guy seems eager to trade freedom for security. As a famous person once said: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

The Chines people on the mainland do not feel threatened with their liberty, and it is only the West who are the purveyors of lies. Freedom is not absolute even in the US which is why Trump can't involve freedom of speech when he threatened a judge or his family with harm, he is liable for prosecution. Freedom does not mean you can do everything that you want such as causing anarchy or vandalism on the streets just to promote your cause, like what the Hongkongers did a few years back.

The KMT position on maintaining ambiguity in order to keep peace with China is absurd. If the KMT is willing to give up Taiwan's status as a country, then they're not fit to govern Taiwan.

There is so much chaos and war in the world today, can we not for a moment aspire for PEACE, the world will be a better place to live in if people will coexist in harmony.

Taiwan’s status is not a country. Taiwan is only recognized by 13 countries. Taiwan citizens have never held a referendum on independence and Taiwan has never declared independence.

If both sides hold different interpretations, it is not a consensus. Former president Ma claims to be a lawyer, yet he is oblivious to the contradiction.

China has big reward for Mr. Ma as sales agent of Taiwan. Mr. Ma changed the language of government from traditional to current China's simplified system as first step of integration. Mr. Ma has a bright future being the chosen leader of Taiwan from the communist rule.

Indonesia has many 17,000 islands and many languages . If these many parts were behaving like taiwanese back then..we could see forever civil wars for independence probably till today. Luckily, 1928 long before Indonesia was formed as a "new " country in 1945 those many parts of Indonesia decided to become as one nation, one language and ONE "island". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youth_Pledge.
In 1965 in Indonesia during political unrest, many Chinese immigrants (newly due to civil wars between national & comunist china), were slaughtered in Indonesia.. as a result due to competition/rivalry of both political system they called democratic (U.S.A) & communists (mainland china). Taiwanese don't know how Indonesian chinese immigrants suffering in 1965 because of their stubborness adding fuel to the rivalry between China & U.S unlike Japanese that solemnly accept defeat to U.S after atomic bomb (probably Taiwanese want the same ending ?) So I suggests to taiwanese.. don't be so selfish , no war is better then winning the war. Let's see if you really are in worse conditions in the future under mainland's rule..then from there you can rise up. I did respect U.S.. not anymore now. Too simplistic. This world is full of unknown . Becareful of what you want. You are dragging the whole world to abbyss if war breakout. The consequences will be received by many countries. Wondering if you know Jesus' word how to respond when somebody asking/robbing for your clothes ?

Since Japan renounced Taiwan on April 28, 1952, Taiwan’s international status remains undetermined.Taiwan used to be Japanese territory. Taiwan is currently separated from Japan. SFPT territorial disposition article 2(b) is the cornerstone of the current undetermined international status of Taiwan. According to the US, the ROC is not a state, Taiwan in not independent and Taiwan does not belong to China.
