Blueberry boxes storage rack

- We have a lot of these identical cardboard boxes from buying blueberries over the years. They are very handy for storing stuff in, so I made a rack to hold 24 of those.

I love how so many woodworking projects start by eating something, looking at the container, and saying "That would be great for storage"
I've found myself looking to garbage pick old wood that people are throwing out for shop storage.
I kinda wish I ate blueberries now - I could really use a storage system like that! Nothing I eat comes in conveniently sized boxes like that... :(
I think it was Matthias that used small yogurt containers to make a tray for screws and bolts. I copied that idea and use the resulting tray several times a week when I need an odd screw or nut. I also take out all of the screws and hardware (e.g. battery boxes) after my kids destroy their toys. Those little screws come in handy a lot. From trash to treasure!
Well they really *would* be great for storage! They were manufactured for that purpose; they're readily available, inexpensive, and reliably uniform!
For a second I thought you needed all that storage for blueberries....
Same thing! My thought was, there's NO WAY they can eat that many blueberries before they go bad. Then my logic kicked in. 😂
Don’t let Matthias lie to you. He’s eating THAT many blueberries! :D
Plot twist; Mattias is a bear
He's making blueberry vodka or schnapps 😉
@@zacprunty He needed a distraction from his Blackberry habit.
my grandfather had a saying: Funny how there's never enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to do it over.
I've always heard money. But time is money.
At first I make a temporary solution for something. Most of the time it lasts fifteen or more years before I have time to make something definite.
And that lasts only five years or so.
So happy that you have control of your account again.
About that...
It’s not just the build, it’s the thought process you go through and elaborate on that makes this channel so great.
Very happy to see the channel is back!
Sorry for all the stress you've had to endure, if I could, I'd donate for the effort you've put in simply to intrigue us. Thanks, Matthias.
Thank goodness, the channel is back... :)
Nailing the frame down to the workbench is my kind of woodworking 👍
Matthias you're one of my favorite creators. I've watched your videos since Marble Machine 2 for probably about 15 years. I have literally grown up watching your content. You've taught me a lot of things about being practical and systematic indirectly just by watching your methodical approach to problems. I'll always appreciate your videos. I love that you got your nail gun out of a dumpster. Don't ever change!
God bless you and your family.
Totally agree. Same for me. I follow him since he build that apple grinder with the screwheads exposed to mush apples for cider.
I am a homeowner now and you wouldn´t believe how many projects i approached in his manor.
Solidity of my projects has improved a lot since i follow him.
Stay safe and have a nice weekend :)
I've been watching about that long as well.
This is a great observation. I hadn't realized I'd been watching Matthias for over a decade, now. When I think about personal heroes, I don't typically think of CZcamsrs, but he has influenced the way I think about problems. Cheers!
Matthias inspired me to buy a tablesaw as well as a bandsaw in 2015. Never regrettted it! Workshop keeps getting bigger and bigger :)
The day I discovered his videos (6-7 years ago) I ended up watching all of them and it planted the seed in my mind I want to build nice and interesting things too. Fast forward to two years ago, I quit being a programmer and went and got my qualification in woodworking and now I run my own shop. It's hard but so satisfying. Grateful and happy this channel exists. Sending a big hug from Italy.
Recycling is good and all but re-use, even of cardboard boxes, is just magnificent.
I just love taking something meant for one-time packaging and using it for years to store/organize stuff in.
We always had mustard from the jar. The jar was simply covered with a tin lid. The whole family drank from these glasses later because they were really nice drinking glasses. Someone recently thought to himself: "Just a lid, that's stupid, let's put a thread on it. Well, now the empty glasses are thrown away instead of being reused. What a pity
It's so satisfying when a company packages things in a way that is reuse friendly. It's like metal coffee cans...they are almost non-existent now. I'll specifically buy a brand just for it's container!
@@uranoxyd I would switch mustard brand!
People always forget recycling is the last one in Reduce Reuse Recycle for a erason.
@@uranoxyd there's an expensive jam brand that I quite like (can't remember the name off the top of my head - from Whole Foods a while back) that still does that. Glasses are a bit small for water IMO but are excellent whisky tumblers! Have at least 4 in my cabinet.
Welcome back, Matthias!!
Checking for “square” is the least followed up / actioned check on CZcams video commentary. Everything is nearly always absolutely square. Thank you for demonstrating how to fix “out of square”. Hypotenuse clamps. Genius.
Wait I was looking for a cryptoscam, what the hell is this woodgears channel?
glad to see you got your channel back, and that none of your videos were deleted.
I'm glad to see your main channel is back under your control.
yo man, glad to see you have everything back.
I thought he'd never do the jump test on that match wood construction. But he did. I am impressed again. Well done Matthias 👍
Nice to see your channel back!
So glad you got your channel back!
Sitting here watching this man build stuff so he can store stuff to build more stuff out of tools he built himself. You're one of a kind, Matthias 🙂
God, am I happy to have the channel back🎉
A quick and rough shop project, and yes with mortise and tenon joints and Box joints. You are my favorite woodworker 😂
Back in the early 40's my Grandmother used old cigar boxes for her storage cabinet. She new people at several tobacco shops and used the same size box on all. After 50 years of use (when we had to move her out of her home), these cabinets were still operational. Cheers
I still find my grandfather’s cigar boxes all over the house we inherited. It’s a nice reminder of him every time.
I love how your one of the best woodworkers around, still screw up, and show the parts where you screw up and how you fix it.
Glad you got your channel back I hope you didnt lose too many subscribers.
Happy to see you back!! Also lets give some compliments to @CZcams for adressing this highjack, and solving it this fast! We are all very skilled at complaining about youtube, but lets take a short moment to also highlight the good!
Glad you got the channel back!!! Scammers suck!
Congratulations, you got your channel back in no time! :) That's quite a record there. Glad it went through that quickly. :)
Happy to see you back again, Matthias.
Thanks for keeping the mistakes in, always good to see , best to you
I like how your CZcams thumbnails have become a project in and of themselves, documented and all
it helps to remember the thumbnail before the project is done, because the finished project doesn't always make the best thumbail
I am glad you got your channel back. Waiting for the video about what happened.
Good to see you have your channel back Matthias.
Welcome back!
Love seeing Tuddenham Farms represented! We go through a box per week of their berries too!
we get over a month out of a box
I love the fact that Matthias leaves in the "Oh Shit" moments. we all have them, and its nice to see them kept alive in video ha ha. Thanks for another great video Matthias! and for sharing the OS moments.
Hey, the channel is back!
Glad to see you back
Always happy when you show your mistakes because it makes us mere mortals feel better ;-) And as my father-in-law always said when doing a project..."Slow is Fast".
you're back!
Glad to see you got the channel back. Hope not too much damage was done!
Glad to see the channel back Matthias, finally youtube doing something good for a change.
So happy to see you building again, it's a pleasure to watch. Thank you for your hard work and the passing of your hard earned knowledge. I've learned to open my mind and think outside the box from watching your videos.
Love the use of the loose tenons to keep the racks in place and to add rigidity. Brilliant stuff!
He’s back!
Necessity is the mother of invention....but recycling ,imitation ,thriftiness & determination have a greater role in your projects. Looking forward to the next one :-)
Heh. My dad had similarly collected boxes from frozen meat and seafood. By luck they fit in a very comfortable fashion into Ikea Expidit/Kallax cubes. But I’m feeling very nostalgic, because back in the 70s I built a similar, if larger, rack like this for BankerBoxes that I kept all my childhood “Stuff” in.
Looks like your content is coming back and youtube is sorting the hack out :)
I know people always say this, but it's really great that you leave in your screw-ups, because 90% of success in life is learning how to recover from error. Seeing you succeed after having to fix a mistake or two is a lot more valuable than seeing you succeed via edited perfection.
I'm glad the thieves were opportunistic and lazy and just hid all the videos and and not malicious and deleting the videos. I've seen it happen both ways with these youtube account thefts and the times where videos get deleted get messy.
I suspect that its way more time consuming to delete the videos than just mark them all private in mass. These hackers know they have limited time to take over and post their scam before youtube comes in and restores the channel.
@@peterjensen6844 oh yeah 100%.
What happens in those cases?
@@cbalan777 youtube can't restore deleted videos so they were lost.
For a minute, I thought those boxes were all full of blueberries. I thought you had lost your marbles. 🤣
Organized and orderly hoarding is so satisfying
I've been watching your channel for over a decade now, and your videos have never dipped in quality. It was fun watching you try to make something "quick and dirty" complete with the obligatory jump sit. Thanks for all the entertainment and education.
I can’t believe how many ways there are to build storage and work wood. Fascinating content.
Nailed to the workbench....God bless you for admitting your mistakes to the masses
Great video. I would like to see you repairing the nailgun, especially finding out what is wrong with it.
Great challenge 👍🏻
Then test it against a new one.
Its just outa oil.
Your's was the first YT channel I ever subscribed to, possibly 12 years ago. Missed your contributions during your injury hiatus, but very glad you came back. Your quality is right back to what it used to be. Time for some more mouse videos? They still remain your most popular ones, oddly.
I've been watching your YT channel for years and you never cease to amaze me. Thank you.
Good to see you got your channel back!
I don't know what's more impressive: the rack or the fact that you consumed about 60 kg of blueberries.
Nice to see progress in the hacking case... welcome back ❤
thankgod you got your channel back
WOOT!!! You got your channel back! I reported them a couple times yesterday...glad to see you back at the wheel sir!
I was initially confused why you intended to spend the material to close of the 'back'-side of the rack instead of making the boxes accessible from either side, but was satisfied by how well efficiently the "extra-shitty used-plywood --" [with no other(?)] "-- for uses like this" filled the space.
I'd initially imagined that off-camera you had the blueberry-boxes stacked like the arrays of banker-boxes I'm used to sliding in/out from under benches or overhead shelves to access deeper ranks while searching for tools/materials "helpfully re-"-organized by people [with different "priorities" that do not include being able to use any of it...] -- But seeing that you intend this to be easily and readily accessible, has made me rethink my plans towards {inhibiting building walls of boxes}, instead of {making navigating them easier}.
It is just mesmerizing to see you work Matthias. It is amazing the details you go through for a so called " Simple Project" !!!! As a fellow engineer that considers myself hands on,then i Just have to bow to you and salute you. Thanks.
I used to live in Pennfield and had a wild blueberry field behind my place. was nice to pick fresh blueberries especially when I was young and poor. The blueberry box from St. Stephens brought back some nice memories.
So glad you got your account back!
I love it! I did a similar thing with peanut butter jars. I have a cupboard where the top space is too high to properly reach, and also to deep. By making a holder for all those jars I could put those in horizontal. Now I only need to grab the front to get to them. Underneath is space for a couple to stand vertical, because I can reach that easily.
Also prevents moths from getting into the food during the summer.
He's BACK!!! 🙌
I always learn something or get a good tip or suggestion for my own projects from your videos, and this one is no exception! I was going to do this very type of system to put a bank of tool and small parts drawers in my old workbench, to sit on its open shelf underneath. I thought about the side guides to keep the back corner of the drawer from going in between the frame stiles, but was thinking about pocket screws to fasten them to the stiles. Your brad nailing and gluing them between the runners is genius, since the runners are already attached to the stiles, that's sufficient for holding all 3 pieces, the 2 runners and the guide. Thanks as always for your practicality, and your upcycling of used and construction-grade wood. With lumber prices still higher than I'd like, I hate sinking more than I need to, into a humble shop project. Good stuff, Matthias!
I love seeing how a master can work with construction lumber to make an amazing and functional piece. Nice job!
Channel recovered???? Bravo
Thanks for sharing the frustration during the initial assembly. Its nice to know someone as clever as you makes mistakes!
I love that your version of "quick and dirty" is still better than anything I could ever do
Your voice over (as always) is excellent!! I really enjoy your videos and thought process
Wild blueberries are awesome! Blueberry wine is really good! That's a great use of the boxes. I've done similar re-use of boxes for less waste, plus the sizes were practical.
Omg i was so worried. Send you a big hug fron Argentina.
Hilarious, nailed it to the workbench. I shouldn’t laugh, I am guilty of the same thing. At least you didn’t cut through your workbench, like me.
It's insane seeing a box of blueberries like that, here in the Netherlands they're so expensive that you'd probably a couple hundred bucks for a box that size!
6,- for 500gr at Lidl. The boxes showed 2,27kg.
So around € 27,-
@@jordyb8487 your math isn't right, 1kg isn't 100 grams but 1000
They grow wild here😀 in NB canada ,much of lower eastern Canada in fact. You can buy them from roadside stands for about C$ 12.00 /Kg
They are farmed commercially of course but still "wild"
We have Maple syrup to!
So what. Tulips cost almost nothing in the Netherlands, but cost a fortune here in the US and Canada.
@@daylen577 he mistyped, it's €6 for 500grams
I'm so impressed by your abilities to eat huge quantities of blueberries.
3:15 I really like the story-telling approach here. Where other channels might have an in-the-moment "well darn, I messed up". Here, you have the much more fun after-the-fact narration "well, here is where I realized..." (soft cursing in the background sped-up video)
Loved you admit your mistakes... the nailing your project to your workbench had me laughing as I have "been there, done that". Thanks for the laugh.
It's good to hear you got your channel back Mattias.
You have better lumber than we do. Ours is crappy SYP with huge growth rings. You can buy large boxes of fresh blueberries. On the other hand we have Jalapeños in Texas. Cheers, and thanks for the content!
The secon life of about 65 kg of blueberries ... nice project an with these cardboard boxes it has a nice charme too
"Glass to break" - favorite label
I went through a period of making wall-sized shelving units similar to this. Extremely lightweight and inexpensive and once I had made a full-sized plywood jig for laying out parts, ridiculously fast to make. Held together almost exclusively with glue; the finishing nails were just there to hold things together while the glue set up.
So glad you're back!
nice you got your channel back
You are a man of many talents. I like that you leave in the mistakes. With the magic of video you could edit out the mistakes. We all make mistakes and that is why they put erasers on the end of pencils.
Perfect project for somebody who makes wine - with racks a little narrower and a little closer together bottles will rest perfectly on two facing rails.
Saw the thumbnail and title, i legit thought god damn they eat a crap ton of blueberries...until the video showed that it was all empty boxes he saved...lol
great job great design and use of material as well as joinery👍👍
I also love how doing things fast tends to slow things down. It is good to see you are as human as the rest of us.
There’s a US Army saying “slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” Take the time you need to do it smoothly and it will be faster than correcting mistakes.
Looks like they didn't actually delete any videos of yours (hopefully). What a crazy day, though.
Even if they did, "deleted" videos still exist on Alphabet servers.
For a second I thought you kept so many blueberries around that you made a unique storage rack just to hold all the berries.
😂 me too! I was like my god he buys in bulk! 😆
I was given a lot (hundreds) of plastic boxes meant for crayons. they can be gotten at walmart $.50each. I made a very small cabinet for 9 of them with the intent of sorting screws and nails in closable containers. I used basically this same design but fully enclosed, and with the 'shelf runners' in dados .. it didn't work perfectly and I'm unhappy with it but when I remake it I will take some pointers from this video, so thank you for posting it!!
Matthias quick and dirty construction proved to be a pain in the back side. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
Nice to see the Channel is back!
