'Blondes... Bullets... and Blackmail... Can't Stop Him'
A solid light-hearted mystery from Hammer Films, actor Louis Hayward (despite the fact that he is not the young man he had been a decade and a half earlier) returns once more and for the last time playing Simon Templar, the character made famous by Leslie Chateris long-running collection of novels about "the Robin Hood of Crime" produced by Hammer Films in the UK (with a nice nod to Hammer Films legend Terence Fisher) and distributed by RKO in the States. Its quite a rarity this one to fans of the Saint series. Interesting to note that it would be another decade before it was successfully revived on the small screen, with a perfectly cast Roger Moore. The film is notable for the unexpected but memorable appearance of a very young 22 year old Diana Dors who plays a temptress who tries to seduce the Saint in order to keep him in her apartment "Look Baby, you don't need a GUN! Use what you've GOT!" - Zábava
fI grew up watching Roger Moore as the Saint. Have to say this was excellent and enjoyable
I had never seen or heard of this particular movie. Very enjoyable!!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this British film from the early 1950s. Louis Hayward pulled it off along with Naomi Chance. A good cast all round. Thank you for sharing this gem.
You are very welcome and thank you for saying so
This is the first time that I see the first ove the Saint ove the 1950s
Hi everyone whenever I watch Simon Templar it reminds me of Roger Moore with his usual sauve acting talent he was excellent too portraying James bond 007 may he rest in peace thanks for uploading this movie 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦
With Moore's acting "talent", the only thing he could be excellent at playing is a stump.
Good movie. I like Hayward's soft-spoken voice and easy manner.
I thought so too.
And just as in the books, he can come up with a Haymaker off some thugs jaw if need be...
Hayward is a smooth operator. Loved the original commercials that popped up. Thanks for sharing.
Louis Hayward was an excellent choice for “The Saint.” In fact he was the first to play him, in 1938’s “The Saint in New York.” After that, George Sanders did several films. Hugh Sinclair made two (not very good). Then Hayward returned for this.
Roger Moore remains the most popular; hardly surprising after a seven-year series. Ian Ogilvy was also good, in “Return of the Saint.” Unfortunately, we were later subjected to a thoroughly asinine film with Val Kilmer!
As this was an independent British production, it was not part of the Hollywood series. (Hayward aged well.) I had always wanted to see it! Thank you for finding this and uploading it.
George Sanders would be an excellent choice!
Glad you enjoyed the opportunity to see it
@thomaschacko6320
I thought that Sean Connery was the first actor to play the role of 'James Bond'. But there was also a 'James Bond' film made in the 40's.
@@redblade8160 You are probably thinking of a TV adaptation of Casino Royale from 1954 starring Barry Nelson as Bond. The first novel wasn't published until 1953.
@@usernameinfo
Yes. That's the one; the1954 version of "Casino Royale".
If I were a big time movie producer back then I think I wouldda grabbed onto Diana Dors and featured her in one movie after another. She didn't need any breaking in time. She was instant star material ready for the big time.
@bthvnyt.
Diana Dors did not go down well in America, and British films are sold for an American audience.
@@redblade8160The biggest reason Diana did not get the reception she deserved in Hollywood was the abusive, narcissistic, manipulative asshole that was her first husband. He sabotaged her early Hollywood chances by turning down roles opposite actors like Burt Lancaster, just because he wanted to make the most money possible off her without giving a damn about her actual career. Even when she did go to Hollywood in '56 for RKO Pictures, he still screwed her over by having her turn down the role that eventually got Jayne Mansfield acclaim in The Girl Can't Help It.
To say nothing about truly killing her Hollywood career by nearly beating a photographer to death after he, her and a few others were pushed into the pool during a welcome party.
And that's on top of the fact he regularly beat the hell out of her and mentally abused her. She would have been a much bigger name today, much more remembrance here in the US as well as England if it wasn't for him.
@@redblade8160 The reason she didn't go down well in America, and why her chances at becoming as big a Hollywood star as others is squarely on her controlling, narcissistic louse of a first husband.
He drove her away from Hollywood jobs opposite actors like Burt Lancaster and Tom Ewell (She was offered the role that went to Jayne Mansfield in The Girl Can't Help It), directed her squarely towards acting gigs that didn't really show off her true acting capabilities, and sabotaged her Hollywood career in 1956 by going to town on a photographer who pushed them in a pool at a party, which is what signaled the demise of any chance of being a Hollywood star.
All this, when he wasn't constantly cheating on her, slapping her around and using her money as his own personal piggy bank. Boils my blood; he was married to such a beautiful and wonderful woman, and treated her like dirt.
@@joeygoodwin9629
Oh, yes, I did hear something like that; it slipped my memory. The story reminds me of some rough piece of dirt from an Al Capone gang that lured her in by promising her the world, but only to bleed her dry and then leave her for dead!
Her vocal talent has been somewhat underappreciated.
Thanks for posting this. I'm enjoying these films.
I’ve always loved George Sanders as the Saint but I caught Louis Hayward in The Saint in NY (TCM) and he brought something totally different to the part - suave but a little tougher - a real delight and I love the way he moves! Anyway I went in search of more Louis Hayward and discovered this gem. Not quite as good as his first outing but enjoyable all the same. He was something special. Thanks for posting!
I locked these blackk white movies
Thanks, I am a huge Dors fan.
Like Marilyn Monroe in The Asphalt Jungle, the then relatively new - and gorgeous - film star Diana Dors makes quite an impression in her brief appearance! She'd soon graduate to lead roles.
She was much more professional than Monroe, no contest there.
Thanks for the upload... always liked Louis Hayward in the Lone Wolf television series
I have always been a fan of Louis Hayward and this is another gen of a movie.
Me too.
@@kathyraygoza3299He is also great in Walk a crooked mile .
Outstanding
Absolutely fantastic! So authentic, including 'Anna' the Saint's favourite knife. I am going to check out for more Saint's with Louis Hayward. BTW, the Roger Moore series started much later. Roger Moore carries it off to perfection = I suspect, Roger Moore could have taken Louis as a model to work on...!!! Great movie. The Brits...they do it so well! Thanks MD's Cat for this gem.
You are very welcome, and thanks for saying so
Thank you! Loved the TV series, the books, and radio plays.
Hayward was a good villain in House on the River.
He was very good in And Then There Were None. Almost Saint like.
But usually, his charms just seemed to lack in other movies.
Roger is still the best.
Very enjoyable movie. Thanks for the upload! 🎦
Nice to have seen Charles Victor as Claude Teal again, he starred as the sergeant in the 1955 Police Dog film.
As the description reads "A solid light hearted mystery" This has a great mix of action, romance and intrigue . Well played by all characters. Naomi Chance's crooked little smile and Dianna Dors sultry simmering sex appeal were captivating . Louis Hayward was valiant as always. Thanks for upload MD's 😼
Thank you for your comment
Great stuff a well doneseriethank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Diana Dors, the British counterpart to American blonde bombshells -- Jayne Mansfield, M. Monroe -- was the youngest student @ LAMDA. She worked on stage & screen earning kudos for her performances in "Yield to the Night," "The Long Haul," "The Unholy Wife" & appeared on numerous TV episodes in the US. One of her 3 husbands was actor/game show host Richard Dawson.
Louis Hayward, Ida Lupino's first husband, was born in South Africa, came to the UK where he wanted to act becoming Noel Coward's protege. After arriving in the US with Lupino, he enlistef in the USMC, & was awarded the Bronze Star during the WW II. Some of his best roles include the dual role in "The Man in the Iron Mask," "Ladies in Retirement," (with Lupino), & "The Strange Woman." He was in many swashbuckling movies, but Edgar Ulmer cast him in "Ruthless," a type of "Citizen Kane" melodrama. He worked on TV as well. His smooth, charming facade belied an evil mind who could inflict pain or save a damsel in distress. His films display a versatility of characters; his nuanced performances imbue each character with a realism worthy of Shakespeare's heroes whose inner dramatic tensions enable him to explore the human condition in a variety of costumes & settings.
Good movie thank you❤
I was expecting Simon Templar from my childhood. 😇
Personally I love me a bit of Ogilvy
Hey up mate thanks for more goodness
Obrigado pela postagem e gostei muito, sou mais um inscrito!
❤GREAT! There's one more Saint with Lewis Haworth in it, if you like this sort of movie? I am 64 and this is right up my alley!
Louis Hayward was the first Saint. “The Saint in New York” was well-done; and based on one of Leslie Charteris’s best novels. Amazing that there was a 15-year gap between Hayward’s two films!
I turned this on in the '60s to see Diana but apparently they'd cut out all of her scenes to make room for time ... nice to finally see the DD sequences
Size double D.
If I were a big time movie producer back then I think I wouldda grabbed onto Diana Dors.
Boy, that Louis Hayward guy sure looks a lot like Ricky Ricardo!!!
El Santo!
Baba Loooooo!!!
...Otherwise known as 'When Diana Dors Ruled the Earth'.
Was this before or after 'One Of Our Diana Dors Is Missing'?
Too good.
The golf club looks like the one used in the James Bond movie Goldfinger
You're right. The golf club is at Stoke Park Country Club .
Well now, Major Dolby's Cat, you may be uninterested to know that my cat "Piffie" (Epiphany Verona) slept comfortably on my lap all through this superb RKO Radio Pictures flick. She missed the Jaguar XK-120, the woman who Marilyn Monroe would like to have looked more alike, and the woman who looks/acts like Barbara Stanwyck. Thanks, a million real U.S. $$, for posting.
Great comment to read 😉 made my day.
Very nice! Ahh…! ❤
Great movie ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐well worth seeing 👀👀👁👀👀👀👁👀👀
that was good. really good.
Hayward was nowhere as charming and enigmatic as Roger Moore!
Roger Moore was drop dead gorgeous, he was born for that role.
To be fair this was the last of Louis Hayward Saint who had last played Simon Templar ten years previous and considered himself too old to return when originally asked.
I always liked Louis Hayward. This is the oldest I've seen him. Middle-aged. A more serious character than his foppish roles in the 30s
Yes, but he was a much better actor, which Moore himself would admit.
In the books, Hoppy is an extremely entertaining American gangster, straight out of the Bronx or Brooklyn with an accent & dialogue to match...
Too long ago for that to be Ronnie Barker waiting for the phone at 33:00. A lot of humour in this great show!
2:39 This seems to be the Stoke Poges Club where the golf scenes were shot in "Goldfinger" - where Sean Connery (as Agent 007 James Bond) plays Gert Frobe in his role as Auric Goldfinger. This Thamesway sign must have been erected for the purposes of this Saint movie.
"I think it's a good time for me to retire with a headache." One wants to ask: "And what's his name this time?"
oooh a scant top! and, , GAMBLING! such intrigue 😁
Real acting 😮
Kind of fun way to spend an hour. An American saint is a bit of a novelty, but Mr. Hayward carries it off fairly well. BTW I notice that at 1:18 the news article reads "JUDY Fenton Dies..." yet at 49:48 Simon says he "was very fond of JULIE!!"
Well, the press are often quite cavalier when it comes to getting people's names right
I wonder how many of the outside locations are now council housing or luxury flats? This world is gone forever.
IMDB has this titled as the Saints Girl Friday.
41 mins in looks like the river Thames at Windsor.
I recall the theme music and that's about it
Wow an earlier version than Sir Roger Moore! I never knew.
It was excellent! Thank you.
Were there others?
I can go even earlier ;)
Over a dozen actors have played the Saint and date back to 1938. Some of the more notable actors were George Sanders and later his brother Tim Conway, Val Kilmer, and Vincent Price.
❤
If marilyn monroe had the little girl lost look, Diana doors has the big girl found look😅
Fantastic
I think she looks more like Jayne Mansfield.
Diana Dors in her usual role as the hot bad girl.
I hope so…🥰
She lived it.
all the familiar English bad guy actors
Unless sudden rotational force or other acceleration stress occurs, one is NOT zuddenly knocked out.
A hard pistol induces severe pain, but it requires a little time for a skull fracture to cause swelling or hematoma damage which damages the brain.
And the scene with Diana is contrived. All that 1950s sudden passionate smooching is not how women function in seduction.
It is when they’re molls, told what to do by their boss boyfriends
One wonders why the police treated the Saint or the Falcon etc like crap when they were the good guys and WHEN THEY SOLVED ALL YUR CRIMES! Never understood the disrespect? But i love my British good guys😊
The Saint and The Falcon are lovable rogues.
Simon Templar - The Saint - was an independent operative, a free spirit. He was never a government agent or licensed private eye. But he was always on the side of right. Even while driving them to distraction, he stood ready to work with Inspector Teal in London, or Inspector Fernack in New York. Police around the world were wary of him because he operated outside their systems, too - especially when he was helping foment revolution! But the major negative point (for them) was Templar’s penchant for helping himself to some of the booty at stake: cash, gold, jewelry, whatever! And to rub it in, he would leave a note with his famous symbol: the stick figure with halo. (Roger Moore did not show the shadier side very much.)
I didn't know that Kate Winslet was acting back then!
It's pretty obvious (to me) from his behaviour that C. S. was intended to be the boss, but somehow they chickened out and made it I. C. instead. Not very believable... (Sorry for the initials, I try not to spoil.)
Still think that the Best Saint was George Sanders, the Gentleman Saint.....
Also note how far down the cast list that Diana Dors is placed..
I see Sam Kid in it ❤
Sam Kydd and a number of British character actors who popped up in British films and classic TV shown on Talking Pictures TV.
It the first times i seen this film and it great louis haywood was brilliant
The same golf club as Goldfinger 2:45 if I'm not mistaken.
Ian Fleming, no not that Ian Fleming, as old man Merton used to play Dr. Watson in the Arthur Wontner as Sherlock Holmes movies.
This Sports car (open sides, no windows) lands perfectly flat in the water (right-side up) and she doesn’t leave the car?? Very unlikely. 😔
1:35 ref
10:40 Why exchange paper money for paper money ??
Airport Banks exchange currencies.
Oh look. It's what's his face from doctor who
Diana only has a short appearance for a few moments starting at 34:10.
George sanders took over the role after him
The dialogue given to Louis Hayward to speak in this movie is atrocious. It's like an American who has never been to England, wrote the words for the English man to recite! Apart from that a fairly decent b movie.
Diana Dors @ 34:10
They totally boned bare nekkid' during that canoe ride at the end!
They did some canoodling in the canoe
Suddenly the Saint is Amerian. Who knew?
I had no idea that The Saint dated back to the 50s.
Try the late 1930’s - Louis Hayward originated the role, the George Sanders, and I think this reprise with Louis Hayward was the last before the Roger Moore version! All delightful viewing!
Anybody know what year she became Diana "Dors"?
Looks like 1947 ... can anyone confirm?
Any Leapords in this movie?
Dors never had a chance in the US. Her idiot handlers promoted her as the British Marilyn Monroe, which was the kiss of death with American audiences.
My, is it just more me or does Kate Winslet not bear a striking resemblance to Naomi Chance?
Français svp
Which actor was "Keith Merton", anyone?
William Russell played Keith Merton . He was Lancelot in the 1950s series.
@@fredleong3986 thank you! I knew the face but couldn't place him.
Too dificult to get the name right....
It's almost predictable these days. Clickbait has become the norm , example here is providing Diana Doors as key figure when she only had one scene. Good movie, though.
Templar was forgiven by Brits for his eccentricities and unconventionality because he is an Anglo-American. This is true.
Louis Hayward is too "prissey" for this role. And, at 54 about 15 years too old
Needed a bigger, younger , better actor
'THE SAINT'S GIRL FRIDAY' why cant you guys get the names straight?
The Saint's Girl Friday is the US title for the film, but here in the UK it was released as The Saint's Return (I mentioned in the description the two titles) As anyone who has spent more time than it would take to criticise the content I upload here, YOU KNOW for everyone to see and see for free, they might also see that my channel's content is very much a British affair.
Chief Inspector comes in swaggering, proud wearing knicker-bockers with plaid socks. LOL And just a few years ago they were in style again... but without the tuck or elasticized knees, just hanging like 17th C pirate pants BUT hanging so low you got a full view of a guys underwear or just bare arse AND reminiscent of a toddler walking around when a dirty diaper so full it pulls down🥴
Incorrect title.
Read the description!
I did the video title is still incorrect.
Two titles provided and both could be correct. Sorry if that is a distraction for you.
