THE SAINT The Checkered Flag first aired on July 1, 1965.
Episode summary from imdb.com:
"Oscar Newley has perfected a new fuel injection system for his racing car and approaches the Saint for financial backing. However the car breaks down during a race and he believes that it has been sabotaged by Ellington, a rival owner-driver. Suspicions are compounded when Oscar is nearly killed in a fire at his workshop and the car is again sabotaged. The chief culprit would seem to be Oscar's driver Alec but then he is murdered. The Saint must race to find the perpetrator in every sense."
An ominous beginning, a villainous middle with a happy ending.
The 1964 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch was used as the back drop for this episode of The Saint, which was already into it's fourth season by 1965.
Did Jack Brabham know he was in this show? He can be seen at 9:41 in his #5 Brabham-Climax pulling out into the pit lane having a look at Dan Gurney's #6 car (also a Brabham-Climax). Also spotted is John Surtees in his #7 Ferrari.
Tim & I are old enough to remember when this show was Prime Time television. That's cool! To tell the truth, we were probably a bit too young to watch it at the time but got to know it better when the reruns started in the '70s.
Roger Moore is perfect in the role and for some unknown reason, in this episode, Simon Templar drives a Bentley instead of his trademark Volvo 1800.
In the real (1964) race, Jim Clark came first, with Graham Hill second. Note at the end, the TV show cars had to be #1 and #3 to match the Clark and Hill footage.

Who on earth would care to follow this lead?
Back in those days they are more than character but example. We followed, and aspired!
The legacy is permanent .
It's nice to see good guys being actual good guys because they had decent principles. Now you have bad good guys and good bad guys. The overwhelming need to victimize villains is not entertaining to me.
When Moore got a telephone offer to do JAMES BOND with his son poolside, Roger pause the caller and asked his son: "Who would you remember more, Bond or The Saint?" His son replied: "The Who?" But, I did enjoy THE SAINT whilst growing up. Good to be able to get all my homework done early and as a reward, get up at late night and watch an episode. Not just a fond memory but a better time and place for most of us.
I'm really enjoying the saint 60 years later.
The Who will be long remembered, as well.
Better time and place for sure. I'm with you. Sad part is, I remember thinking that when I grew up my future was going to be so great, I couldn't wait to get older. Now, I see the "future" isn't so great after all , and wishing I could go back. Sucks to know your best days are now behind you, and didn't even take time to really enjoy them. "Youth" truly is wasted on the young 😔
Little known fact, Roger studied Ving Tsun Kung fu under GM Victor Kan, Bruce Lee’s elder Kung fu brother. When Lee Marvin challenged Roger to a fight, Roger beat Marvin up. Marvin said Roger was a real tough guy. Sifu, GM Victor Kan, said he was too soft to be a fighter. As my Kung fu brother (we studied under the same teacher, GM Victor Kan), Roger is my favourite bond, and one of my heroes. Love him.
I never accepted Roger Moore as James Bond. Sean Connery was Bond.
Moore was The Saint (and Beau Maverick).
"The Saint" shall always remain my favourite ITC show out of all them. Roger Moore is THE Simon Templar. He has left behind one hell of a legacy. R.I.P Roger Moore.
Alex Davies Hear hear!!👍
this film series see pak tv
I remember watching re-runs of this show in the mid-70´s when I was around 9 years old, way past the end of the show´s last season, I think the last season was aired in 1968, I remember watching this episode back in 1976, when I had my tonsils removed, while eating lots of vanilla and strawberry ice cream. Those were the days!
Good times! I miss those days. Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Three's Company and so many more! 😊👍
@@frances4797 I do remember those shows really fondly!! I couldn't wait for my teenage life to start, I came by and went away so fast... (thank god) LOL
A great series and I think Roger never took himself too seriously.
Unlike some of the so called stars of today.
Thank you for posting this.
Such style! Wonderful series. Sir Roger carries the entire production with effortless charm. An underrated actor who was also a keen businessman. Sir Roger will be sorely missed. RIP.
Agreed!
"Not shaken, not stirred". An ironic James Bond reference 8 years before he got the part. I love that!
RIP, Mr. Moore.
Mark Thompson - that's what Bond said, but Templar said, "not shaken, not stirred" at 34:44.
Roger Moore was the original choice for Bond, however he was committed to the Saint and a Scottish actor was approaced Sean Connery. Not a bad thing we got the Saint, The Persuaders and a great James Bond.
How was he not the obvious choice after Connery. The Saint was one long audition.
He was approched befiore sean connery he was committed to the Saint read above
"Neither shaken nor stirred" to be precise.
"This is Cindy Sparks"
"I'll bet she does"
"A little too tart for my taste".
I love it, 1960s all the way.
The best series on YT. Just waiting for another Mr. Moore but he will never come. RIP.
Lovely memories ! Rip Sir Roger.
Sir Roger moore was ''THE SAINT'' The whole World loved him as, and number 7 was really his lucky number for Life. R.I.P Sir Roger Moore The Peoples James Bond
He was EXACTLY the same as Bond,he took his saint character and changed the name from " Simon Templar " to "James Bond "
@@davidmellish3295 I never accepted Roger Moore as James Bond. Sean Connery was Bond.
Moore was The Saint (and Beau Maverick).
The Saint always used to be on a Sunday evening. The next day one of my friends and I, I remember her name was Christine, went through all the fight scenes on the way to school. She didn't have a very happy home life I think. Neither did I; but I'll never forget the expression of happiness and sheer enjoyment on her face. Way to go Simon !
Watching this late at night. TV Land and Nick at Nite used to air these late at night and I had a craving for it now (just coming up on midnight).
Still hard to believe Roger's gone now. Back when we sat around in college watching these on TV Land, even though Roger was fully retired, it was comforting to know he was still around.
Without a doubt my favorite program as a child and then as an adult.
I was 9 when it first aired, I still like it.
Loved how they Incorporated footage of the Late Great Jim Clark into the episode. You could tell it was the great man himself as the helmet and gloves changed colour to black and the car suddenly got a stripe at times
I meet Roger Moore on 21st June 1996 at Garden City Shopping Centre,Winnipeg Canada.. He arrivied on football pitch via Helicopter provided by Canada forces. He was ambassador UNICEF and speaking about the work he does, I brought my video camera and video taped his speech. I then gave him a copy of the video and Roger Moore sent me signed photo of him in the mail. RIP Till we meet again.
Nice story, wasn’t expecting this! I’m from Winnipeg
Nice to be able to comment to the one of the greats of acting this series was a fantastic one quality all the way every time RM was such a quality person in all his career of acting the Saint and James bond were examples of his fantastic character the Sait brings back such great memories of growing up with a exciting character and show thank you beyond thank you for bringing back the SAINT ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bentley Continental S3, E Type Jags... Department S, The Saint, etc etc... so many great fun series from this era.... bring back the good old days I say 😍
MFGuitarStuff I say too!! ✌
Yes shows without the "F" word fantastic !!!
Loved how he always was looking at the camera while talking to the audience watching the show
One of my favorite series from the 60,s. So many beautiful European chicks. Grew up watching re-runs in mid-late 1970,s.
The "fuel injection system" on the conman's car happens to actually be a Weber 40 DCOE carburettor! Used them on my own cars many times back in the day.
R.I.P. Sir Roger Moore is the peoples James Bond. The whole world loved him. I remember watching "THE SAINT" when I was 10 year's old. Still my favorite program Roger Moore is THE SIMON TEMPLAR.
He was quintessential, a gentleman all the way.
Simon Templar has always been my favorite fictional character. He was always
a better Saint than a Bond.
Mr Moore, thank you for your wonderful talent, and humanitarIan contributions, RIP
I never accepted Roger Moore as James Bond. Sean Connery was Bond.
Moore was The Saint (and Beau Maverick).
the saint . Brilliant programme to watch. got all his collection episodes. great actor brilliant . he was great actor for the bond movies. the saint brilliant every episode great story lines. Very enjoyable fond memories of an ears good viewing for all of us who appreciate quality thank you
"A little too... tart for my taste". Great stuff! "The Saint" holds up well even half a century after it was made, and Sir Roger is fantastic. Thank you for posting this episode here.
Rest In Peace Sir Roger Moore.
I dearly love the incidental/soundtrack music from Edwin Astley.
So happy to have stumbled upon this channel. Greatly enjoyed seeing the cars and race footage in the TV show. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers, The Gray Fox
Would recognize that distinctive, classy voice without even seeing him.
Not enough that he was the ultimate in "eye candy" but that voice...
Saint is absolutely gorgeous! Beautiful Man!
i have watched all Bond films a dozen times. the oldest ones are still my favs. i have NEVER seen ANY SAINT episodes. until this. Jackpot.
Always enjoyed Roger Moore. Thanks for all the great memories Roger.
As a kid , I had every Saint book available to buy . My Initials are also ST so I identified closely Roger could not have been more perfectly cast as the Saint .. Perfection
That Jag parked behind that Bentley…beautiful!
These youngsters now with their media degrees can only dream of making classics like these.
Writers came from all sorts of backgrounds, and all were avid readers, hence the great or sly literary references. Nowadays they're from "industry" families and their life experience is basically film school or media studies - four years spent watching and then re-hashing old scripts but with less depth of character and increasing escalation of porn and violence.
Wow what a comment in the show "Not shaken, not stirred" way before we was 007. Love this show. More or less this is like watching a tv show of 007. Sir Roger Moore RIP. Thank you for the uploads.
the show was a little bit like the equalizer
The Bond books were already published, and written by Ian Fleming, MI5/6,7,8 who transformed the OSS into the CIA. In retrospect it seems as if Fleming was also trying to warn us..."Dr No," "Goldfinger," etc...
Putting the captions on for a mighty giggle . I love these old shows . Born 1963 , so you see my heart is warm for it . Don't forget Steed and Peele .
IETCH69 -I absolutely LOVED The Avengers!
count a whole lot of us in on that sentiment my friend
The Avengers! I was born in 1957.
Im younger, but im with you
@@user-di2er6cw2j I'm older. But I'm with you!
I never saw the great Jim Clark race (born 3 years after his untimely passing) so any footage of the great man is always gratefully appreciated
A portrayal of the perfect man. Still the blueprint 53 years on. Roger Moore as Simon Templar. It doesnt-it never will-get any better than this. ✌
any relation to Danny Wilder?
@@Lightonahill25 We go back a long way, but I saw myself more as Brett. Loved them both.💘✌
He was my blueprint when I got the chance to play The Saint on UK TV back in 1998.
The earliest memory I have of my idol/mentor was when The Persuaders! first played in London in 1971.
And one of the nicest fellas in the industry I ever met
R.I.P Sir Roger Moore you have taken the checkered once again for the final time..
My childhood TV Magical Memories 💜😪💔
34.40 Brilliant humor..laugh outloud.."So this is what It's like to be Simonized "
I love The Saint, my mom started me on it.
and The Avengers
It's funny! "Have u seen the Taj Mahal? " - "Why ? Did u misplace it?" And it's beautiful and it's racing cars, Brands Hatch, and old school racing, with cars without security. The portrait of the racing world is probably accurate.
About the Volvo Simon usually drove. The producers asked Jaguar to give them an XKE. Jaguar said no and Roger Moore owned the Volvo which was used on the show. It popularized Volvo.
I use to watch this with my dad ...good times.
Barry Young I used to watch the ITV reruns iafter primary school in the early 70s as my mother did the ironing!
Were we all born in '63?
62 model
So many good things about this but I do love in particular: the clothes; the Twist; Roger Moore's absolute good looks.
Can only totally agree.
r.i.p., Mister Templar.
36:15 'I've changed my mind." "Then, pretend your mind is a dress and change it again."
Eddie Byrne, fine Irish actor!
Roger, hopefully you have a real halo now.
R.I.P.
Well Said
What do you mean 'hopefully?' lol
you know he does. He was a kind man and a class act.
What a lovely comment. Roger Moore was very special.
Must of had an interesting life,,,,
He was James Bond before James Bond
Absolutely in a class of its own !
Ron S,
Note how Moore actually asks for his drink ''Shaken, not stirred''. Makes me think that he was already in negotiations with Cubbie and Saltzman to star as Bond. Remember: This is a 1965 television show. Makes me think that perhaps Moore had been watching Sean Connery closely as Bond for a while back then.
@@jorgecallico9177 he was in the beginning.
@@jorgecallico9177 He was highly intelligent and literate. Probly memorised the Bond stories by the time he was ten!
Simonized!, and something to match my mood; not shaken, not stirred! Amazing rhetoric

Man from Uncle and Hawaii 50 !!
Rest in peace Roger Moore.
When a pretty girl asks Simon Templar for fuel injection, how can the man refuse?
Never happened to me !
Hey, hey!😀
@King Brilliant Brilliant!
Even though the Volvo 1800 he drove was a cool car, driving this Bentley S3 Continental was the right car for someone this sophisticated as Simon Templar.
In 1975, I was studying in class 10, my English was weak. I used to watch The Saint on TV.
I asked my father what Templar's mean, he said, "
Religious man, I remember it to this day."

The Checkered Flag, Season 4, Episode 1, aired 1 July 1965. Roger Moore as Simon Templar; Eddie Byrne as Oscar Newley; Justine Lord as Mandy Ellington; Edward de Souza as Beau Ellington; Pamela Conway as Catherine Marshall; Tim Barrett as Lee Leonard; Neil McCarthy as Alec Hunter; John Kidd as Bateman; Dorothy Frere, Hunter's Landlady; Eliza Buckingham, Bank Clerk; Lewis Alexander, Man in Bar; Jack Brabham, Racing Driver; Pauline Chamberlain, Woman at Brands Hatch; Gigi Gatti, Car Racing Spectator; Arthur Goodman, Man in Bar; Bill Hibbert, Mechanic; Roy Lansford, Barman; Aileen Lewis, Woman in Bar; Terence Mountain, Man at Brands Hatch; Cecil Paul, Man in Bar; Sadie Slade, Party Guest; John Surtees, Racing Driver; John Tatham, Man in Bar.
Moore was so good in this show it was impossible for me to accept him as James Bond. He was Simon Templar doing his James Bond impersonation.
My favorite Bond, and the one and only Saint (ok there was a pretty good sequel series and one very bad film but still...it sounds good).
Race footage probably from 1964 British G.P. Some editing didn't match that well, mixing a bit of earlier footage from 1958 or 59, but that doesn't mater at all. The whole effect was excellent. Very 60 s British TV. The subject car was I think, a Lotus 22 Formula Junior and the fuel injection system was big side draft Weber DCOE. The movie Grand Prix (1966) did the same thing by using Formula Three cars mocked up with wide wheels and added on body work to make them appear like Formula One cars. Great job considering the time and budget that was available to them. Really like the series, saw these broadcast in Canada as a kid, we generally got them six months to a year after they ran in Britain. Same for Danger Man and The Avengers.
The twin Webbers were carburators unlike the Tecallimat Jackson injection system. Of course German Bosch made mechanical fuelinjection pumps for cars and CEV,Simms.Lucas, etc all played with petrol fuels probably a lot of other companies also got involved. But here the topic is actual spraying fuel rather than the DCOE's sucking through a venturie and causeing the fuel to rise into the induction air stream via the main and idle jets .Be Blessed
I just noticed that on car number 7 the fuel application seems to be DOWN DRAUGHT ? Can this be a raceing car school from Lotus since all cars seem identical or suchlike ?
PS I visited Brans a few times in 64 I think the Moto Guzzies were being raced again by J,Hartle against Hailwood or Jackimo great sound anyway. Derick minter made a show also on Norton 500 Manx. (King of Brands ) I purchased my Norton Atlas from Hallets of Canterbury who were Backing Derick Minter. Great times then no fast family hacks on the roads with similar Driver users lacking interests in the technology and how to use it ! BRRRRRR! I am still alive after all that too ! Several times nearly not,People still do not see motorcycles on the road ???? SO Guys Drive Defencively on the wonderfull machines of today ! Blessings.
Yup, the race starts from the grid, cuts to paddocks bend, cuts off just at the braking point to druids and the next clip is after T4, then it jumps to second to last corner. After those it starts to go all over the place..
At 9:43 you can see sir Jack Braham in his number 5 BT7 - it was used for the 1963-1965 F1 seasons before being replaced by the BT19 in 1966. The period and probably race is spot on.
Thank you do much for posting this movie, we had not seen this one before. 🙋🤗☺️😷🙏
This was top notch entertainment back in the day hahahahaha
Almost forgot,1965 that Scotsman driving a foreign car with a non Offy engine in the wrong end and painted green won Indy by 2 laps and an upstart Texan driving a selfmade plastic car won Sebring in a down pour. I was at Indy!
Too bad Roger Moore was NOT the Original 007 he fit the image way better with his unique humor
He said in one of his interviews that the hardest thing in Bond series was to keep his face serious, because he wanted to laugh sometimes while acting
Loved this show as a little girl and had a HUGE crush on Roger Moore 🥰
My childhood TV series The saint
Wow...such a talent & great humanitarian & extremely handsome! You are loved & missed! 🥰❤️🙏🌱
#19:07 "Bottom of the matter" as Sir Roger artfully spanks the saucy tart
Saucy tart 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Justine being overly predatory. Moore has his hands full trying to detach her.At 34.45 he utters the legendary line - neither shaken nor stirred.
And yet- that line was from 007!
Class upload, thank you.
Only Roger Moore is the Saint. He's outstanding.
I never accepted Roger Moore as James Bond. Sean Connery was Bond.
Moore was The Saint (and Beau Maverick).
i see this film in my childhood
Did I ever like this tv series when I was a kid.
I've raced at Brands a few times but at 27 minutes 58 seconds the car is going the wrong way past the pits. OK, the film has been printed the wrong way around but someone must have noticed. The main race is the British/European GP on the 11 July 1964. I was there, not driving but as a spectator.
Great show! Love the interactions between Simon and the ladies!
Yes, it seems any woman can't resist his charm and ready to be eaten alive by him or even better than that🙂
@@user-di2er6cw2j Ha, ha, yeah, something like that!😊
The head of one of the great F1 teams proposed to me any number of times, but all I could think of was a life of broiling hot arenas, the smell of oil and "noise, noise, noise!" I was too young and naive to think of First class hotels with en suite grand pianos, and the great female defense... "I'll skip this race darling, I have a headache...!" Now if Roger were to propose, hahah!
Bless you Sir Roger. Peace. 1965 I was looking for a Scotsman who was busy racking up World Championships for a boss that bore a resemblance to David Niven. Also a Kiwi probably driving a hand-me-down Zerex Special in the ARRC( later Can/Am)
At this time
It was clear he was James Bond Material
Very spruce, smooth and suave character
Yes I have to say, fabulous actor especially as 007. RIP
Basically the Saint became a poor man's Bond, with very little actual plot line.
5.40 The fuel injection system seems to be based on Weber Carburettors.
Great episode and puns!😁👍
RIP Roger
No me canso de ver las series el Santo lo admiro mucho a Roger Moore,me huviese gustado estar en su tiempo y ser protegida por Simon😍
Didn't the actor playing 'Oscar' also have the role of James Bond's caddie in 'Goldfinger'?
''If that's his original ball then I'm Arnold Palmer''?
But as for this kind of racing? Thank goodness for people like Sir Jackie Stewart who pushed for and demanded more safety. Just LOOK AT THEM! That's an open cockpit with no rollbar. The complete deathtrap in an accident.
Vespa GS and Lambretta at 15:38 E-Type Jag also, cool
