I ended up with about a 5 week old. I did manage to get him to eat and drink after about a day after warming up(I know its better than nothing, but not milk). He been eating on a wide variety of softer nuts, cat chow, chicken feed...I am a terrible mom! lol He seems really healthy, and friendly disposition...Im tempted to make a squirrel door in my house and let him decide his own future :) Im late, but thankyou for all the info!

I saved 3 squirrels I found in a nest in a cutdown tree. Their eyes were closed and they just barely had fuzz on the. I kept them in a box in the kitchen in some old clothes to curl up in because it was still cold out. I would feed them warm milk every couple hours day and night. After about a week I came out in the kitchen one morning and one of them was hanging on the wicker phone stand with it's eyes open. I soon had to put them in a cage to keep them out of trouble. Eventually I started leaving the cage out on the porch with the door open. It took a while for the last one to move out into the woods. He was the runt of the litter and used to come back back for weeks.
I should mention I used "Flea wipes" on them. They are cloths you can buy to kill fleas. It is not as harsh as some flea repellent, but you have to do something if you bring them in.

@@trappedoutbambie2508 i don't know if you've found an answer yet but Fox Valley sells squirrel milk replacer, or most pet stores carry Esbilac puppy milk replacer which works too. i believe the ratio for the powdered Esbilac is 1 part powder to 2 parts water for baby squirrels.

We've had three here over the years. All were open eyed and furred. The first one had a boo boo on his head and it never grew fur back. He was so sweet. Years later the guy raking our leaves found 2 hidden in the leaves alone. A brother and sister. The boy was sweet and the girl was more rough when they grew up.

This was informative and all of the babies are so cute! The one that was mad at you because you didn't feed her was hanging over the hill of blankets in her cage looking at you and still waiting for you to feed her. 😂
I've raised a couple babies at different times and one was under a week old. That infant was the hardest thing ever. I used a combination of Fox Valley and Esbilac formula and then transitioned to just Fox Valley. I also gave her squirrel blocks when she started eating solid foods. Squirrels are so smart and fun! They are my favorite animal 😍🐿️

Huge help! Thank you! I had a baby squirrel following me around so I took it in overnight since we have stray cats around. The next morning once it starts to get warm out, I went around an iPhone 6 different squirrel hutches and I tried to get the squirrel to climb up to each and everyone and it would just keep following me and climbing up on my clothes and crying, so I really appreciate the advice. I just picked up formula and I will keep looking for mom.

I had a baby squirrel following me home one time and clinging onto my shoe, so I took it home and tried to get a hold of a rehabber, but didn't have any luck. I did however receive instructions on their answering machine to put him in a box with a towel and some source of heat. So, I did that. But he didn't always want to stay in the box, so I let him be outside a few times, but he would always stay very close to the porch. And then one day, he went out to the driveway and started eating nuts and after a while, he left. So, I'm not sure if I should be worried or not.

Hurricane Ian just hit us last night and mid afternoon my mom had found a baby squirrel that was no longer alive near our front porch, and as my brother and his friends were cleaning up the debris in the yard, they found what probably was their sibling, curled up into a ball and shaking on the ground. We waited to see if mom would come back but there was no other squirrels in sight for hours/the rest of the day. So I currently have them, they look to be about maybe 6 weeks old. I tried to formula feed (thankfully I have brand new syringes and formula from when I fostered kittens, the formula is a multi species kind) they refused to drink the formula even after being cuddled up and toasty, but they did eat apple and grapes so maybe they’re older than I thought they were, just very small. I’m going to try to release in the morning if mom/other squirrels are there. If not, I will contact a rescue!

Hi there! A few days ago I discovered 2 6-7 week old squirrels hanging out near me chicken coop. I looked around for a nest or a female squirrel but could not find one nearby. I had figured that maybe they had fallen out of the nest, or followed their mom.
As I was looking, I could smell a dead animal. Our chicken coop of right infron of a cow field and the fence turns a corner right where our chicken coop ends. I looked closely into the cow field and couldn't see any sort of animal other then cow manure. I started looking around more thoroughly, and found a squirrel that had drowned who was currently in the process of decomposing. I figured it was a baby at first, but then pieced it together and found out it had to be the mom. In case I was wrong, I waited outside with the squirrels for 3 hours (Until Dark). I watched them fall asleep and then left.
The next morning I went to the chicken coop and they were still there. Just to be clear, I have not made any contact with the squirrels except with a glove only when needed. After school, I went back and still saw them. I gave them some food including grapes, sunflower seeds, and cashews. I just realized I wasn't supposed too. After that, I went to a football game and came back at dark.
When I returned, there was no sight of the squirrels. I figured they were sleeping in the tall grass, getting as warm as possible. When I went back in the morning before school, I still didn't see them. I was a little worried but I hoped that maybe their mom wasn't dead and found them.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. This afternoon, we had a pretty bad rainstorm. (Including pea sized hail). I found one of the squirrels curled up into a ball, getting bitten and attacked by fire ants. I thought to myself, "dang, she died.". As I paced back and forth on what to do with her lifeless body, I saw her breathing. I grabbed a hose and lightly pours water on top of her to get the ants off (this wasn't the best decision, but I didn't have any other choices). As soon as I had got most of the ants off, I called my parents letting them know I found one of them in really rough shape.
The first hour was the hardest. We were still trying to warm her up and as a 13 year old still in middle school, I had homework that I needed to do, along with studying. I looked at her as she was barely holding on, gasping for air. Its currently 11 PM. I found her at 7-8 PM. She has drastically improved, but isn't out of the clear yet.
So here I am, a simple 13 year old girl who loves helping out animals, laying in my bed trying to do some research on how to help this poor squirrel. I still have not seen her sister/brother yet, but I'm hoping that it's ok. If you have ANY advice, I will accept every little bit of it. I'm really trying to keep this baby squirrel alive until I can properly release it into the wild. I have 3 dogs and it's very hard to keep a wild animal inside my house. Also, there is no available vet or wildlife rescue near me, since they do not accept baby squirrels. My mom is taking her to her work tomorrow so she can keep a close watch on her. If you can pass down anything to me, I will be sure to inform her about tomorrow morning. Again, thanks for this video! Respond as quickly as you can please. 😁

I found some baby squirrels on my porch, in the wheels of my snow tires! I had them stacked, two high, the mom stole a towel off my porch, and perfectly put it around the wheel and perfectly rolled them all up, single file, in the towel! I was getting ready to move them to storage and found them when I saw momma guarding them for me! I was afraid she would chew on the valve stems, not to mention, they were right in front of the door. I aged them at 4 weeks. They looked just like your 4 week old, but they hadn't opened their eyes, until one did that day, calling for mom. I let her take them to her other nest, in hindsight, I wish I hadn't. It was on my neighbors porch, who thought it was cool, until they got older and started running around. He threw bleach water on them until they all finally left. What I couldn't figure out is why they were so lethargic when I found them. They looked healthy, but couldn't really even crawl. Just a little. Good video!

Full disclosure, if you are in Virginia it is illegal to raise wildlife without a license and education on how to do take proper care. That being said if you aren't in VA then its up to you, but I always recommend reaching out to a rehabber in your area. That being said I begin offering solid food as soon as their eyes open but they will continue to bottle feed and only pick at food for a few weeks still after they open their eyes. When in doubt offer foods, but let them decide if they want the solid foods or bottle. They'll wean naturally overtime. For food you'll find that they enjoy veggies, nuts, and seeds but don't feed them too much of any, especially nuts, it should be a treat. Look into a high quietly rodent block. Again if you have more questions I can help you find a local rehabber who should know more about the squirrels in your area.

He is a bit dehydrated so I’ll have to fix that first. He’s active here and there but would rather curl in up in a dark blanket or shirt and sleep. Any advice on if he needs solid food or formula? Those fears are totally unfounded. There has never been a confirmed case of rabies transmission to a human by a squirrel. Tularemia is rare and plague is carried by fleas mainly in the west. Squirrels are the cleanest mammals out there. CATS are the most disease carrying animals on the planet and ferals pose a serious danger to humans.

So I was living in the desert near las vegas. For a year I provided seeds and water for the little ground squirrels. This 2 times a day. Early morning and dust just before they disappeared for the night. I just moved from that location. Will they be okay. Its now 110F everyday and they will have zero water. Should I drive down there and put water out every so often ? I'm worried about the babies who were raised with ample source of water when there really is no natural source of water there.

; ) They are on a formula of goat's milk, yogurt, and heavy cream at the moment, just until my Fox Valley formula arrives. Eyes should be opening any day now.
Have a question, though. Assuming they all make it to the weaning and releasing age, it's going to be too late in the season to release them this year. I'm going to have to overwinter them. Do I need separate housing for each squirrel or can they be together in one cage? I hear they are very food-protective and aggressive, so maybe they do need to be kept separate.

All five babies survived AND thrived, I cannot recommend the Fox Valley Day One 20/50 squirrel formula enough. Even though it is pricey, I figured if I was doing this anyway, I would go with the best formula. Not one of the five squirrels was ever ailing in any way. I have released them, and they are living in sort of loose, overlapping mini 'territories' in a section of pine forest. I'm visiting them daily and providing food at several locations in their area, and will do this all through winter to ensure they have enough to eat. In case they get behind in collecting and storing their own food supplies. I hear they nest together in the winter to survive the cold, and I've provided them nest boxes, but they seem to prefer building their own dreys.
I named all the squirrels, but needless to say, I can't tell them apart anymore. They are not scared of me, but will not let me approach them anymore, which I think is just fine; they're wild animals after all. So happy to have been able to at least give them a chance. I have observed them collecting crab apples, mushrooms, and pine cones and storing them; their instincts are all there. These creatures are born with the complete survival package. And there is nothing better than seeing them living the life they were born to lead, instead of being cooped up in a cage.

2 tiny squirrels just fell outta a tree... The nest broke there landing. I have bottle fed squirrels before, it didn't go well. I know you gotta make em go potty. Every 2 hours feeding. But what else can I do to make sure they live!?! I got em in cat carrier with a heating pad under a folded bath towel. I have cat's. Slot of cat's. They are jealous and trying to steal the baby milk... I don't want em to die!!!! Any advice!?!

There’s a baby squirrel in my garage. Not sure if an outdoor animal scared it into my garage or brought it in. Seems to be about 4 weeks old. Shivering and apparently has been in there for two days. I thought the cries were a bird. My wildlife rehab is closed for the winter. I’m going to try to get it inside a box to warm up but it’s very scared.

How can I feed baby squirrels

  • @ifoundasquirrelwildliferescue

    If you find baby squirrel
First step when you find a baby squirrel should always be Do nothing but to try return to mom to begin with-unless obviously injured or found by a cat: then seek vet or rehabber immediately as cat saliva is toxic for squirrels which requires antibiotics and any obvious injuries will require evaluation and treatment by a qualified professional
Place baby in plastic container with air flow holes with a fleece (cardboard dehydrates and bedding needs to be anything but terry cloth/towel material to prevent claw catching or breakage or injured digits) and with a sock filled with microwaved dried rice or beans (reheated and well mixed for hotspots every 2 hours) to keep baby warm because mom will not recollect a cold baby then you will need to Play CZcams video of baby calling mom while keeping an eye out for predators or males that may harm baby
Bring in at nightfall and try again at dawn for at least 24-36 hours
If the baby is obviously dehydrated already and you have some small animal experience you can get 0.5 mL/cc Oring syringe from any pharmacy (usually by simply asking or explaining situation) and try to give the baby warm (101-110 degree) plain pedialyte but please literally only single drops at a time because getting liquid in it’s lungs will kill it via pneumonia (the most dangerous thing that happens to them after find is incorrect feeding). Also their bathroom functions must be stimulated by rubbing with warm wet surface (like cotton ball) at every feeding-ideally trying before and after each feeding to express any waste that you can.
PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ANY NUTS OR SEEDS!!! anything but the specific formula it needs can be incredibly harmful (including fatal)
Should be feeding fox valley day one 2050 formula to squirrels over four weeks old…
And a homemade formula for under 4 weeks… some use fox valley 3240 but many have experienced stomach issues so, like me, do not recommend it
Esbalic is a temporary solution and has 34% crude protein (1 and 1/2 times the 20% squirrels need) and is much too low in fat for a healthy squirrel whom is safeguarded against MBD as it grows and then goes through puberty and breeding over the first year of life… and esbilac has been specifically called out twice for causing squirrels problems in three years…
Please don’t feed squirrels puppy milk long term: unfortunately because the lack of correct calcium to phosphorus ratio in puppy milk you release them and then they develop terrible health problems months later from the poor diet
Captive squirrels require a specific diet to be healthy in the long term
Order fox valley day one 2050 for squirrels over four weeks old and mix in a 2 parts water to one part formula solution that you allow to rest for at least 4 hours before feeding and discard 24 hours after making
Only reheat portion you need for single feeding and discard any formula that has been heated even if it’s unused
Store formula in refrigerator for 24 hours or freeze and thaw as need if prefer large batches (usually ice cube trays best for portioning)
Using a Miracle nipple with a 1 or 3 mL o ring syringe is the only widespread acceptable feeding method but baby must be fully hydrated (usually 24 hours via pedialyte) and warm in order to be fed… the only acceptable feeding positions are upright or with squirrels on tummy and holding miracle nipple paw areas if old enough
Without experience the baby will be aspirated and die of pneumonia so get training from a wildlife vet or rehabber before ever considering feeding a baby squirrel… your help is fatal no matter how good intentioned it is if you don’t put in the effort to get the help to do it right…
While waiting on fox valley make homemade formula
6 tbs goat milk (fresh fully rehydrated)
6 tbs plain flavored Greek probiotic yogurt (full fat)
    4tbs heavy cream,
    1 egg yolk
Formula need to set up for 4-8 hours before using and be discarded daily (if not frozen in individual or daily portions-usually people do this using an ice tray)
Begin by getting 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 cc or mL syringe (ideally oring) From any local pharmacy -generally they will get them out if you explain what they’re doing-start with only giving Pedialyte plain flavored for the first 24 hours drop by drop until you get used to feeding…feeding schedule is determined by age and starts at every 2-3 hours and slowly becomes more distant between each feeding as they age
If it comes out of their nose then you are aspirating them and they will likely get pneumonia… if That happens to you then you’ll need to seek out antibiotics from vet or rehabber and someone to help teach you feeding techniques
Baby should be kept in a plastic container with fleece and a heating pad set to low under half of a tub with air holes (cardboard dehydrates and materials like terry cloth cause claws to and even fingers to break So badly that the squirrel can lose them) and left in that plastic with heat source until fully furred before moving to short cage to begin learning how to climb. Continue formula until squirrel self weans around 20 weeks but offer squirrel or rodent blocks from when squirrel opens eyes until it’s eating at least 2 per day before introducing any vegetables. Do not introduce any fruit until eating 2-3 blocks and 7-10 thumb sized (or one inch) pieces of high calcium vegetables and even then only at 1-2 pieces per day and after around 12-16 weeks old. Nuts are not recommended at all prior to 16-20 weeks and even then should be a rare treat considering nuts are only available annually in the wild and their high phosphorus content is fatal to squirrels if given in excess…

Hawk grabbed a squirrel a few days back and today a little screamer outside came running up to me when I went to see what it was. Fella practically jumped in my hands. Must be about 4-5 weeks. Eyes open, furry but not fluffy tail. Seems in good shape. Puppy milk well received but not too much. I can't figure out if I'm making him pee correctly... might be happening but paper tower is already wet/warm
