Cracking The Cryptic: The Movie

- Today Simon attempts a puzzle by ahaupt that will go down in sudoku history: this goes beyond anything we've ever seen in a sudoku before and involves some completely new logic. Unfortunately, as you'll see, it takes Simon quite a long time to find the logic in question!! Play the puzzle here:
cracking-the-cryptic.web.app/...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply.
Group Sums: A number in a small circle indicates the sum of the digits in the cells covered by the corresponding circle. These digits may or may not repeat. Arrow Sudoku: Digits along an arrow must sum to the number in the corresponding circle. In this Sudoku all group sum clues contain a comparison operator. The clue ≥26 for example indicates a sum of at least 26. An arrow between two cells points to the smaller number.
The puzzle was published originally on our Discord server (link below) and also on Logic Masters Germany here:

Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships. We're also "cryptic crossword" aficionados. Mark is the twelve-time winner of The Times championship and Simon is the former record holder for most consecutive correct solutions to The Listener crossword. We hope we can help your puzzle solving while also introducing you to some of the world's best puzzles.

"I'm sorry if this is a bit boring" buddy, I'm watching an hour long sudoku video. We're way past that
It’s the brilliance in the struggle is why we are here
Simon: “Do have a go at the puzzle first.”
*looks at the video length*
Me: “No, I don’t think I will.”
Not a single chance haha
I was about to comment the exact same thing.
Ha - exactly
same here: "try it first" where video is greater than or equal to 45 minutes and I'm not going to try it myself first. I might do it while he thinks outloud in case I find something while he's going... but not doing it myself
I like to think I am pretty decent at sudoku. In fact I usually can solve their puzzles, or at least the medium difficulty puzzles, although not nearly as fast or as efficient as them. I was at 3 hours, andstill had no clue where to go lol
29:50 When Simon busts out Notepad, you know things are serious.
I just lost it, seeing him pull out a Notepad.
I haven't watched the video but what kind of Cthulhu's older, larger, grandparent did Simon solve!?!?!
Everybody gangsta until Simon pulls out the notepad haha
I pull out my notepad all the time when solving these puzzles (“ok, x might be 11, 12, or 13... better write that down”). But when Simon does it, you know it’s on
Indeed, this is the same for me with programming. Programming is easy for me; but what constitutes programming getting hard? Whenever I need to write something down on paper or a notepad, that’s when.
I might not have watched enough videos.... but I have NEVER seen him bust out Notepad. EVER.
I can't believe I'm 👍-ing a video where nothing happens for half an hour. Thank-you.
There are 90 minute films with less drama and tension. Watching a man in his attic bedroom solving an unbelievably difficult puzzle and say he's going to call his mate after has more pathos and humanity than many boxsets.
As well as being an utter pleasure to discover and attempt (some of) these sudokus, this channel has absolutely saved me during this lockdown.
Thank you for the company, the kindness and wit.
I particularly admire the ability to show and celebrate intelligence and ingenuity without making either seem cruel or not worth valuing.
And congrats on the solve!
It followed a narrative arc of conflict, adversity and resolution, and the characters are just so believable. The nines hinted at the start were foreshadowing, a Chekhov's gun waiting to be born.
There’s something uniquely inspirational seeing Simon solve a particularly difficult puzzle. I know these numbers are arbitrary outside the constraints of the puzzle, but breaks like these make these numbers seem like magic. And when those numbers get put in their solve position, it gives me a zen like moment I’ve chased in many a sleep hypnosis on this platform. Finding this channel in this pandemic has been a true save.
1:15:52 into the video “it’s not easy this, is it?”
Simon: *looks at the LMM page*
LMM page: (no rating)
Simon: "*chuckles* I'm in danger!"
This should be listed in IMDB as a thriller.
Could be a Mission Impossible movie, it would be a fitting theme song. The theme song of my attempt would probably be Yakety Sax.
British man suffers for way too long.
A Beautiful Mind.
It's longer than The Irishman
Simon: "I have no idea of what to do in this Sudoku"
Me: "First time, huh?"
haha, good one :)
Other difficult sudokus: half an hour before Simon gets a digit in
This puzzle: half an hour before Simon starts taking notes
its so endearing when Simon thinks we can spot logic before him
Krystle Leis Nah it’s not unusual to spot something before him or find some break-in logic before him, his ability to *always* find the logic and do it so rapid fire one after the other though? I wouldn’t have believed it had I not witnessed it
Snowfloof Cathug yeah, it’s the “oh sorry, I’m having to think for 30 seconds for the next step” if there is *ever* something that is even slightly difficult that’s hard to fathom.
any time I find something before him it's because he's held my hand through the entire thing
Well sometimes we do, when it's something blatantly obvious (which apparently is hard for him to spot sometimes), but not THAT kind of logic
@@ratomaw2650 That's actually a thing where being smarter makes it harder to spot things so blatantly obvious, because you're using all the knowledge contained within you to see the things.

I am not sure who Simon keeps apologising to for being slow when he solves something like that

How in the world did ahaupt construct this? This is an absolutely mind blowing puzzle.
And how much time did he need for the construction?
@@JohnADoe-pg1qk at least 1
Ahaupt had two large advantages: starting with all the inequalities as equalities, and knowing the relationship they were working toward. Changing them all to inequalities, and not knowing that everything was involved to produce the mathematical relationship, makes it so much more difficult. Still a mind-blowing construction, but I think Simon actually had the greater challenge.
He had to come up with the idea, which is already stunning, but I can't imagine the number of times some permutation of totals didn't work out to unique solution. And then you've got to test the puzzle, too.

Mark: Here's a cute Thermo
Simon: Here's a marathon puzzle that will melt your brain.
This must be the first time I watch a video for over an hour without having any clue of what the hell is going on whatsoever. And I loved it.
I remember this being one of the only puzzles on LMG that I was completely unable to solve, despite trying for hours. I’m very curious to see what the solution path will be like.
Edit: that was the most insane thing I have ever seen.
Makes you not feel too bad you weren't able to solve it donnit? Lol
I wouldn't've been able to solve that. Not even if I gave myself a whole day.
Nothing has been cooked with gas today :(
Simon's brain was cooked with all sorts of gases today :))
He was cooking with charcoal......which any good grill chef knows takes 4 times as long. hahaha
With damp wood my friend, damp wood.
It's 35 degrees outside, the sidewalk will suffice.
I feel like I need a major in mathematics to even understand the logic for the break in for this puzzle. Didn't know sudokus could even be this complicated.
With multicolor mode in the new CTC Web App everything would have been much simpler to explain and Simon would have solved this in 45 minutes without Notepad and using only two colours (purple and green were not needed).
But this was probably the first puzzle with this kind of SET logic (arrovs with opposite colour relative to their circles).
I described a logic shortcut for the break-in in a separate comment. See if you can understand that
Another approach with the same result. In box 2 replace = 24 in the five other cells. Furthermore you know that r3c6 equals r1c7 + r2c7. So now all cells are in row 1 and 2. R1c4 (x) counts double, r2c5 (y) is not counted. Now you can compute the sum of the two 2x2 squares in the corners:
Simon: "If I add these and deduct these..."
Me: "r1c4 and r9c6 look like chickens"
Simon: do have a go at the puzzle first.
Me: do have a go at the video duration first.
Everybody gansta till Simon pulls out notepad
Simon may not amongst the greatest solvers in the world as far as speed solving goes but surly he has to be amongst the very best in the world as far as logical solving goes and I in no way decry mark by this statement because mark has a different skill set to Simon but the way both are able to describe the logic as they solve makes this as far as I'm concerned the very best channel on you tube and I watch a lot
he still sucks at spotting the obvious, though. Or completing the row / column / box when he unlocks all of the necessary clues for that row / column / box to be completed. No later than in yesterday's puzzle the moron had put several digits in (I think in box 7) leaving the digit in the middle of the box out while he moved on to a totally different area of the puzzle, obviously leaving that area unfinished, as well. Like I've said many times on this channel: he has good logic, but he lacks HEAVILY in the attention / completion aspects of the puzzle. Many times he resorts to all sorts of complicated techniques that make you scratch your head in confusion when following normal sudoku rules would be sufficient to put the digits in. That's why I don't like him
@@blabla-rg7ky why keep watching and complaining?

I finally solved this after something like 6 to 8 hours (although spread over several sessions yesterday and today).
The first 2 hours were trying various things which failed before finally hitting on the procedure below. I since came back to watch the video and see that Simon struggled with all the same things and came up with similar ideas but arrived at the same point in 20 minutes that took me 2 hours. I have quite often used pen and paper (or notepad on the screen) to help in the harder puzzles and am impressed when Mark or Simon achieve the same thing in their head without the need for it. So I am pleased to see Simon finally get his notepad out. I just don't have the short-term memory to remember the various little conclusions as I go along and thus the notepad is effectively my short-term memory. Also I have a maths background, so manipulating equations seems normal to me (and has the advantage that the paper/screen IS your short term memory).
So here is the contents of my notepad (pasted directly here and then a few comments added to make it more readable):

I have something not too dissimilar, only I'm old fashioned and used an actual paper notepad and pen, so I cannot cut-and-paste here. I used upper case letters to represent regions in rows/columns 3, 7 and lower case letters for cells outside of these. Had a similar number of equations also with 22 unknowns.
Ok, so I figured I could upload my workings in the form of a photo. No prizes awarded for neatness. (I changed my labelling scheme part way through)

@@RichSmith77 Thanks for posting that. It looks like we did very similar things. You've written D+E+C=J+K+I and presumably there is a A+E+F=G+K+L somewhere to go with it. Also I can't see where you accounted for the four "
@@paulcook2961 I must admit, when I looked back at my notes after I read your comment, I was surprised I didn't see the A+E+F = G+J+L equation written down. I must have just held that particular one in my head, knowing it was very similar to the D+E+C one.
I also confess I had 'given up' at one point and watched the first 15 minutes of Simon's attempt. I didn't get any hints from it, but seeing Simon struggle through the same thought processes I had, and also get nowhere, for some reason gave me encouragement to have another go. (I'd already spotted the D+E+C etc relationships due to the arrows). So pleased I did.
Oh, and I didn't include the < domino's as equations. I was happy enough to have the four adjacent cells involved in a relationship that had a difference of at least 24. I then just worked out what the maximums and minimums for each of those cells was, taking into account the domino relationships individually (and spotting couldn't have two 9s opposite each other or two 1s).
Honestly that break-in was absolutely beautiful, and the hour and a half (well 45 mins at 2x speed) was worth every minute

I was having such a gross day and then here comes Actual Ray of Sunshine Simon Anthony with a feature-length installment. I love this channel.
My plan after a long day at work was, that I would watch a video of Simon solving a sudoku, and then watch a movie...What I am actually doing right now is watching a movie about Simon solving a sudoku :D And the thing is, I don't even mind, Simon is so entertaining all through the video!!
An hour and a half of Simon and amazing logic?? Time to get some snacks and settle in for the evening! 😍
Coming back to this video after over a year, it's interesting how to see how much simon has learned about SET. Most of the first 45 minutes are essentially him teaching himself how to create the right set, and once you see which cells are important to include/exclude (and the arrows do signal it fairly effectively), the breakin is relatively straightforward. I bet the breakin wouldn't take more than 20 minutes if this puzzle was featured today.
Hell, it actually only takes simon 20 minutes to highlight the cells involved in the set, it's another 20 minutes before he fully understands how to eliminate cells effectively, which would probably be instant nowadays.
I was looking at that =
I hear you brother - my 'solve' followed that identical pattern.
We've all been there...just being fooled
Same here, that was the point at which I gave up as well.
The only thing I kept thinking about was that there couldn't be any number greater than a 7 there, but that was the best I could do.
I thought the same, then i highlighted every box that had some symbol attached then thought phistomefel. Then i thought better see what simon has to say about that
I haven't commented before but I watch these videos faithfully every day, and my favorite ones are where the host (usually Simon, since Mark doesn't generally tackle the weird logic ones on a live solve) has to come up with some completely new logic. I generally find I can follow along when the logic is explained, even if I couldn't have seen it for myself. I felt myself clinging to understanding by the very ends of my fingernails this time! But the real joy is in seeing Simon's joy at figuring it out. I'm so glad we got to see this feature length installment of my favorite nailbiting show.
“I know it can be frustrating watching me flounder around trying to find logic that you found already” Dear GOD Simon, I started watching this just now and i gave up yesterday
I love how he thinks we see things... I do, but only after he's got half of it done already! lol
There is something about Clueless Simon commentating on his solve that makes it very enjoyable to watch! I don't think I've ever smiled (even laughed) so much, while watching someone solve a sudoku.

@@markscottuk I am just referring to the moments, when he hasn't yet figured out what to do. Of course, Simon is a genius, but even when he needs some more time to figure out the solve, he has a wonderful ability to keep us entertained.

@Teun van der Vorm cause he wasn't cooking at all. At all times it looked like he was trying to light the fire :)
For the first time (solving almost all puzzles in the last couple of months), my solve time is (well) below the video length. So proud, I just have to write a comment.. :)
I had a much quicker start, managed to do without a "boo-boo" (one of the useful words I learned here), and didn't comment while solving. :)
My much quicker start: after coloring the "greater or equal" and "less or equal" clues, I saw that they are around column 3 and 7, and row 3 and 7, respectively. Trying to show that all clues are equal, I colored those two columns and rows (their sum is equal). The common digits (3rd and 7th) can be deleted, and the "arrow digits" can be eliminated as well. What is left: (r1c3+r2c3+r4c3+r5c3)+(r5c7+r6c7+r8c7+r9c7) = (r3c1+r3c2+r3c4+r3c5)+(r7c5+r7c6+r7c8+r7c9). Now adding r2c4+r4c2+r6c8+r8c6 (the common digits in the GE and LE clues) to both side of the equation, still keeps equality. So the 24 (or higher) difference of the GE clues (sum 90) and LE clues (sum 66) comes from the remaining 4-4 digits (as shown in the video at 47:00 ) At first I thought it does not work, as the maximum difference is 32 (1111 vs 9999), but
a, the digits on the edge impacted by the ">" clue, so the max difference is down to 1122 vs 8899
b, the non-edge digits are in the same row/column, so cannot be 11/99, but 12/89, so 1222 vs. 8889,
c, the other side of the ">"clue are on the same row/column, so the edge digits cannot be 22/88, but 23/78, so 1223 vs 7889 and so the max difference is the actual difference, so I could write in those digits (it is at 52:22 in the video).
The other part of the quicker start was spotting that box 2 must have 7 and 8 at the edge, as the 5 digits outside the 21 clue must sum 24, and with 8 and 9 the digits of column 6 in box 2 should sum 7, and it is impossible with 1/2 in the center of the box. Similarly for boxes 4-6-8, using the 45 minus "clue in box" technique was really useful.
Can't say i understood that but i hope Simon reads it :D
Wow thanks that really simplifies his process. Proved so easily that 3/4 of each 2x2 sum have to be equal
I found that the minimum sum in the blue cells in the 11 clue, together with a bit of algebra, determines r4c2; and that the sum of r3c1-5 = sum of r5-9c7; and similar for c3 and r7; but that was about all
Thanks Simon, for my new go to excuse when I am unable to solve a puzzle. "Well, I guess it was too hot today."
16:00 "What are these arrows doing? What is it they're meant to be telling me?" ... 20 seconds of silence later .. "I don't know."
Watching that solve was delightful & astonishing. Thank you, Simon.

I did have to work two shifts during that time though. I'm so happy right now.
I skip to the middle to see how Simon's getting along and he's now adding together colors in a mad frenzy. I do not think I'm cut out for what ever this is.
I love the puzzles but what I love even more is watching Simon's unmitigated joy and excitement at finishing difficult puzzles.
My man really says Do HaVe A Go At ThE pUzZlE fIrSt and proceeds to open a freaking notepad and do some voodoo with equasions
you should put up a video with the 'ideal solution path' because the logic in this puzzle was magnificent!!
I would lay 10 to 1 odds that Simon is pretty much close to the ideal solution path. I found the initial break-in quickly, but was surprised this puzzle kept resisting and resisting and resisting ... and my incorrect assumption about no digits repeating in a group sum did not help! #bobbins #crackingthecryptic
@@BigAsciiHappyStar what I meant was basically a shorter video could be made. He could explain the initial break-in in about 10 minutes and go from there
@@sarveshnal200 I much prefer the unedited format as it is, so that you can see all his thought processes and failures and watch him fix them
I was riveted the entire length of this solve!
Simon : "I'm so sorry it takes me one hour and a half to resolve"
Me : "I'm sorry I coudn't even manage to begin it in almost 3 hours"
Congrats on the solve, you guys are awesome!
Man, the constructor of this puzzle is such a troll xD. All of the circles with the greater/less than or equal to signs are all exactly equal to the numbers stated lol.
Hour and something in Simon started to use it as a fact in his logic. I don’t know why and I feel like if the constructor wasn’t a troll it would be close to impossible for Simon to recover from that mistake
It is the only way that the inequalities that Simon talked about can work because he deducted that R1C5+R9C5+R5C2+R5C8-R5C1-R5C9-R2C5-R8C5>=28 for which there is only one possibility (2×9+2×8-2×1-2×2=28). This lack of freedom traces back to the "Sum-Comparators" in the way that the sums have to equal the greater than or equal / less than or equal clues.
Simon: You'll forgive me for being so slow
Me: Oh you're fine. I still don't know how we got here.
I don't watch films, they are too long! I couldn't wait to watch this! I empathised with the star who took us on a fantastic ride with laughter, joy, excitement and shock moments! What a blockbuster! ...well grid buster! My cap is doffed to you Simon, sir!
I recently thought that I watch too much CZcams and I should watch more movies instead. Guess you found a loophole for me in that one!
31:19 simon realizes his true power
"I can transform! I can transform!"
When you have to use every clue at the beginning, I can only describe as mathematically beautiful. Congratulations to both Ahaupt and Simon.
Do I understand the logic? No!
Do I pretend to understand?? NO!!
On a positive note, just think how long it would've taken to upload this if you had done it last week on your slow connection....
When a new, super-hard puzzle comes out
Me: I can do it!
Me: colours in squares that can't be a 1
Me: *stares*
Me: *stares*
Me: *stares*
Me: Okay, let's hear what Simon thinks I should do
I'm delighted to say I had a go at this puzzle and, after 30 minutes I had as many digits in as Simon.
Then I gave up and watched his solve.
Simon, youre the only person I could watch mumble and stare at an almost completely blank grid for half an hour, while I still find it entertaining.
23:58 "These... these cells..." In hopelessness over himself just sitting there, Simon tries to come up with a sonnet to entertain us viewers.
Ahaupt, you are an evil genius
When it's been 25 minutes and 50 seconds into the video and you hear the first "Hang on a minute": 🎊🎉
Just started watching your videos and I'm absolutely binging them. Good work, keep it up Simon!
This is the most impressive I have seen on this channel. Simon your tenacity and patience are out of this world. First digit @ 55:22 you could be an astronaut. Thanks.
This is an amazing solve, but there is this one thing that astounds me so much I've got to mention it. (Somehow this just glued itself to my mind)
At 10:26 you add the first pencilmarks that are there to stay throughout the solve, the cluster of 9's.
They get to chill in the grid for about 45min without bothering anyone, until you plot your first actual 9 in the bottom row (55:34) , making the marks on r9c1 and r9c2 completely redundant.
I assumed this was something you would notice right away and just casually remove... I was wrong :P
Via immense concentration and perhaps some tunnelvision you managed to not only plot an additional 9, (1:11:47) doubling the redundancy of one of the marks, but also mess around in the general area (1:17:10) and MENTION them, (!) (1:20:33) actively HIGHLIGHTING them, commenting on them, and still somehow it slipped your mind to check if they were still relevant xD.
In the end the bottom corner nine was never used, as you within 20sec of the final solve used other numbers to just eliminate all opponents to the spot.
R.I.P bottom corner nine, just know you were among the longest living pencilmarks, but utterly useless.
Lots of love, Marius.
Wow. This was a rollercoaster of feelings and a haunted house of logic. And after watching, I still don't understand how to solve it. Great video as always! :)
I didn't understand the vast majority of the computations to solve this puzzle, but I absolutely loved watching Simon's frustration and excitement as he solved it.
"1 minute 14 into the video"
*One minute later*
"1 minute 15 into the video"
Simon is moving so fast, his time has slowed down by...1:60...
I thought that as well when he said 1 min 15 rather than 1 hour 15 as they don't go any near that time
Every minute in Africa a second passes.
That quarantine time just hits different
Seeing Simon so excited to finish this put a smile on my face. What a solve!
Always a pleasure watching someone discover something new and wonderful about a subject they love! Truly a fantastic video and puzzle!
Recently found this channel and all the videos are nice, but this....this truly astounded me. As someone who isn't really into sudoku, just started to try a few from your more normal puzzle videos and solved a couple, but this thing required such leaps in logic and different perspectives...truly impressive. Well done.
Absolutely fantastic. I've never enjoyed a solve more
I'm stunned. What an extraordinary puzzle and what an amazing solve. Thank you ahaupt and thank you Simon.
This time, the cryptic nearly cracked Simon. ;)
It's awesome that Simon actually got clearly emotional over the beauty of this puzzle, you can hear it in his voice at points :D
Watching your cheer when you hit check was one of the most wholesome things I think I've ever seen.
