- Mark tells Simon this puzzle was "quite easy". Mark was not telling the whole truth... or even a tiny part of the truth. Watch Simon get more and more confused on ahaupt's latest brilliant (and brutally hard) puzzle, which you can play here:

Rules: Normal sudoku rules apply. Numbers in the top left of the dotted cages give the sum of the digits in the cage. Digits cannot repeat within a cage.

▶ABOUT US◀
Hi! We're Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, two of the UK's most enthusiastic puzzle solvers. We have both represented the UK at the World Sudoku Championships and the World Puzzle Championships. We're also "cryptic crossword" aficionados. Mark is the twelve-time winner of The Times championship and Simon is the former record holder for most consecutive correct solutions to The Listener crossword. We hope we can help your puzzle solving while also introducing you to some of the world's best puzzles.
Thank you for watching!
Simon and Mark
That puzzle is very approachable. I printed it out and left it on the table, and approached it many, many times.
lmao
Reminds me about questionares I've answered. In some they always ask how approachable some products are. I always put the highest marks on every product as they are definately not going to attack me if I approach them. Tigers are unapprroachable.
@@topilinkala1594 Actually tigers are very approachable. Many other animals run away when you try to approach them, but tigers do not.
"Bobbins." - The voice of a man who has been deceived, backstabbed, and quite possibly bamboozled.
By a friend, no less. No wonder he turns to such foul language.
A nice, wholesome, child-friendly swear word
perhaps even hoodwinked
What he actually means was probably “bother”.
Just putting the time stamp here: 18:41
Simon - "Purple minus blue equals 20 plus grey minus green"
Simons wife on the phone to the psychiatrist - "He's gone off the deep end again"
Actually, he's working for MI5. Speech code, don't you know.
New idea for Patreon content:
The recording of *that* phone call
They could sell that recording to the highest bidder, and then quit their day jobs.
They could start an OnlyFans with that phone call
I’m sorry, that phone call is confiscated to serve as evidence in a murder trial.
Thanks a lot for covering my puzzle and for the amazing solve! Loved the video and prank :)
Just one thing about setting it:
I initially had the difference topright-bottomleft be equal to 19. Then you know the quadruples must be 5789-1234 or 6789-1235, but I thought after this much head-scratching to get some progress, the solver would deserve some reward! The rest of the time spent setting was to make sure there's a unique solution and no easier break-in.
Also, I believe the bent-triple/y-wing to be the simplest step right at the end.
Fun fact: All of the ten cages except the 4-cell 24-cage have the property, that if you remove it, then you cannot deduce a single digit - even with brute force!
Happy cracking
Alex
I am in complete awe! How on earth did you come up with the idea? Did you start with the geometry and then added in the numbers that would "force" 20?
That is amazing. That bent-triple/y-wing at the end is an excellent cap on it, too -- it's great that even when most puzzles would be easy, it still contains challenges. Very well done indeed, and thank you for commenting with the insights from your perspective!

"The hardest naked single in the world... ever... in the history of sudoku." Love it!
Stefan Dingenouts same, and I figured it would be a 5 as soon as he said he could have used the other corner areas. I am not experienced enough to say for sure, but something about "needs to participate in four different rotationally symmetric formulae" sounds a lot like magic squares which always have a 5 in the center
Well - there is a Tshirt right there! ;P

It had me imagining Simon trying to set a rock on fire
"So, purple minus blue equals twenty plus grey minus green". n o i c e
That bit brought Tom Lehrer's 'New Math' to mind.
" From the three you then use one

‘Cause addition is commutative, right!)

@@jsadvent8240 Well it is true though, addition is commutative, just like multiplication and unlike subtraction and division which aren't commutative.
A+B=B+A , A-B≠B-A , A×B=B×A , A:B≠B:A and A/B≠B/A... Those are the four basic axioms of arithmetic. I say 4 after all, there is no real difference between 4 ratio 2 than 4 divide 2.
That’ll make a great tshirt quote 😂
@@livedandletdie You've messed up slightly. The claims that A-B≠B-A and A/B≠B/A are not accurate if A=B.
Drift Wisp that’s what I was going to say 🤪
You should have called Mark on speaker phone and told him that it only took you around 12 minutes, no problem! Haha ...

Thanks again for using my intro, guys! I'm glad people seem to like it!

Aw, beautiful work. Really loved the new intro, fun to see it was made by a fan!
It's very nice! I generally don't like new things, but the intro works quite well.

Almost as funny a watch as Simon's response to the miracle Sudoku as he gradually came to the realization that actually this was a real puzzle and not Mark trolling him. I would pay to hear a recording of that phonecall
Yea i can imagine how "absolutely diabolical" and how Simon would be cooking with gas from the inside, that's how angry he'll be😂 "Oh bobbins Mark, how on earth you dare say this is easy..."
As an American, I fully expect a good, “Blimey old chap! That was a bamboozling puzzle that had me gobsmacked for...” Etc.
Sounds like a great way to plug their Patreon :)
Here's how I would have done Simon's part of that phone call, but then I'm a devious bastard.
First of all: having made the first video immediately record another one, swiftly "noticing" the monstrous logic at the start and solving the entire thing in, say, ten minutes. Then make the phone call (and secretly record it):
Simon: Hi Mark.
Mark: Hi Simon! How did you get on with ahaupt's latest puzzle?
Simon: It was great! Lovely bit of logic at the start; took me a minute to notice the trick there. Nice and straightforward after that, but it was a pretty good palate cleanser.
Mark: *baffled* So how long did it take you?
Simon: About ten minutes, including the intro and outro. How about you?
Mark: ....
And after a week or two, release the real video along with the phone call.
That would be a hilarious response! Make the fake redo video even less than 10 minutes and before it was over Mark would realize he was also being pranked!
Yes, Simon, I absolutely DID enjoy watching you struggle with this puzzle. When you were just staring at the grid and wondering what to do at the start, that's me with about at least half of all the puzzles you guys present on this channel! But then I thought, "This video isn't even 40 minutes long. He's going to see what to do any moment now." And you did!!!
Who else never even thought of clicking on the link to try the puzzle?
I saw "Partial killer" and thought I will watch some of the video to see if it is doable.
Watched Mark say this was monstrous.
This was a good to just watch.
I tried it. I applied every geometric trick I could think of from past difficult killer sudoku solves, and 50 minutes into the process, I got as far as definitively establishing that the square in row 4 column 6 couldn’t be a 1. Gave up, came back to the video.
@@Ian_Hay At least you were correct, it is, indeed, not a 1. :)
I thought about it, then I realized I'm only human and vanished that thought forever from my life.
@@Ian_Hay Amazingly I had the identical experience except I established that it was row 6 column 4 that couldn't be a 1.
"purple minus blue is equal is to twenty plus grey minus green.... so how on earth is that helpful?"
LOL
I love how they keep saying "by sudoku" when they find a digit by using the standard sudoku rules. It feels like animé characters shouting out the name of the technique they're using. And I find it amusing to imagine i.e. a chessplayer saying "I'll take your pawn with my pawn BY CHESSMOVE" every time he makes a move on the board.
I'm so gonna start saying that when playing chess
Sometimes a chess CZcamsr, when commenting on the game they're playing, once they're out of their opening-preparation, and relying on general chess principles, will say they're just playing chess.
"We are definitely NOT cooking with gas"
"Purple - Blue Sqaures =20 + gray - green"
Is this the New Math everyone complains about? :D
7. The answer is always 7.
That was a wonderful 36 minutes spent watching Simon get steadily more frustrated and confused, thanks Mark ;) I needed something to make me laugh tonight, this was great. Also loving the new intro!!
On the other hand: Marc: That is absolutly difficult. Simon: solves it in 35 minutes.
I remember when this first released and thinking there couldn't be a harder sudoku, fast forward to today and videos regularly go into 45 minutes to an hour
The bent triple that finally broke the puzzle was genius! I mean, throughout the entire puzzle, genius upon genius upon genius! Simon is legendary 😁
I dare anyone to show me something more wholesome than the pure and simple joy this man gets out of solving puzzles.
"I'm gonna ring Mark Goodliffe up!"... I thought he was going to say "I'm gonna wring Mark Goodliffe's neck!" !! But that's one of the things I love about Simon, he's so pure.

That Simon not only solved it live, but in 33 minutes, is amazing. Thank you Mark for at least warning the viewers this was monstrous, else I'd be a husk of a man by now.
"I'm going to ring Mark Goodliffe up after this video .."
To be a fly on the wall for that call
"I'm so sure that loads of you are shouting at your screens at me."
We're really not! You might have a couple of viewers who got the solution before you (though I doubt it), but I guarantee that at least 99.9% of us are giggling at Mark's little joke, and utterly amazed that you're able to make any sense whatsoever of that puzzle. Or of most of the puzzles on your channel, come to that.
Here's an analogy: being embarrassed about your puzzling performance is like Usain Bolt being embarrassed because he's half a millisecond off his personal best. The rest of us are, if you'll forgive the metaphor, fat gits who can barely walk across the living room without needing a little sit down at the half-way point.
This. This is brilliant. Please read this, Simon, and take it to heart.
"Fat gits who can barely walk across the living room without needing a little sit down at the half-way point."
This.
Yes, not shouting. Just eating my popcorn
He was embarrassed because he was told the puzzle was easy
There do exist better solvers than Simon out there (Mark being one of them...and all the people that regularly beat both of them in competitions) but very few if any of those are regularly watching these videos, nor do any of them try to make a living off making both informative and entertaining videos demonstrating solving techniques.
The only thing missing is you yelling at Mark. That was a fantastic prank and an even better puzzle! Lol
14:17: "I just wish i was clever enough to understand what that is"
Sudoku Algebra for the win? =D Just replace the colors and cages with variables and constants
I wish mark had been prepared with a camera and filmed Simon’s phone call to him - just to hear Simon tell him: How is that approachable?!
🙈😂
I really wish there was a video of Simon calling Mark so we could hear that conversation ... though I'd worry the channel would get marked as having explicit content. Wonderful prank and a really fun puzzle that I would never have been able to solve.
it would get mark-ed xD
The best response would be to call Mark and say, "You were absolutely right, that puzzle was easy."
There NEEDS to be a mug with 'Bobbins' on it. You know it's true.
Next up, Simon collaborates with a creator to create something terrible for Mark. Tau v Pi might not be the only war on CtC.
There's nothing better than a prank war fought in good spirits. :)
I feel like this was Mark's retaliation to Simon having been told the trick for the liar killer cage sudoku a week or two ago
I would love for Simon to prank Mark with a Black Knight-Jigsaw-X variant. Black Knight rules is Mega Sudoku bundle's game. Jigsaw-X I found on sudoku.cool. sudoku.cool/jigsaw-x-sudoku.php You can change the difficulty levels. Level 1 5x5 is very easy.
A Killer Sudoku app would be a good addition to your collection
There is a really great one by NETI apps (on the Google store at least) and it is free with new puzzles each day. I do agree that the polish that the Studio Gova apps have is great though, that one should be the next on the list for them
dailykillersudoku is a great website with a feature to choose playing with a touchscreen!
they have thousands of sudokus by now, normal and partial killer and a rating of 1-10, with helpers and everything. very nice.
i have no clue what he is doing in these puzzles 99% of the time, but i enjoy watching for the logic which helps me with my normal sudoku puzzles and getting them done faster. Thank you for struggling so i can improve!
I love playing these videos at 1.5 to 2 times the normal playback speed. For one, it takes less time to watch, but also makes these guys seem really smart going so fast (which they are)
@16:30 I'm just proud of the fact that I've watched this channel enough that my first instinct when looking at this was to try bundling together boxes or columns or rows with killer clues and find a mathematical relationship like this at all. I only got half way though with an L-shape thing I was looking at, and I was arriving at a location where I needed two sets of 4 unique digits to be exactly 10 apart. It wasn't there, at all.
But I'm still proud of myself for at least trying to start in the right place and look at the right things.
This is the hardest sudoku I have ever done, and I have done hundreds (literally) of puzzles from this channel. I spent close to 20-25 hours on it, stretched over a few months, and it just feels amazing to finally have it! My logic for getting that central 5 is slightly different from Simon's, but after that it's pretty much the same.
I do like the new intro; nice, that you are showing the name of the puzzle 😊
I’m pretty sure it sometimes does already
Mark's intro threw me off, I thought I missed a video. Great revenge for that recent prank with Simon omitting to mention a trick to solve a puzzle :)
I was smiling through the whole video, poor bamboozled Simon.
“I’m so sure that loads of you are shouting at your screen”
If by shouting you mean laughing out loud then yeah...
🤣
My killer sudoku solving logic is usually along the lines of "Ah, it has some rotational symmetry - I bet the center number is a 5. Aaaand now I'm stuck."
I am sure that Simon used much stronger language than "bobbins" on that phone call with Mark.
Oh my goodness. I have never laughed so much watching Cracking the Cryptic. You guys are great. I’m saving this one to watch again in future.
The logic that he uses to solve this is absolutely mind melting. Also please keep the new intro, it's great.
"Im so sorry if you guys have spotted the trick"
Good one, Simon!
3:31 - This is the smile of a man who doesn't yet know he's been punked. 😂
I wasn't shouting, I was laughing because we already knew what Mark did. The other part of me was trying to solve with you and pretty amazed you made it in this time (I'm pretty sure it would take me for days to solve the solution at the start).
I’d love to be a fly on the wall listening in to Simon’s call to Mark... Bobbins!! Brilliant solve!
I just keep rewatching this one. It is definitely one of my all time favorites.
From the title I was worrying it was going to actually be something with no possible solution. The actual prank is much more delightful.
Good job Simon! This kind of CZcams "drama" is what I call entertainment!
When I did this on LMG, I found the start easier to visualise if I looked at 5 rows/columns instead of 4, and thought of the "non caged value" - I shaded everything to the right of the cages in green for those five rows, then "took away" everything below the cages in the 5 columns - everything in common was unshaded/zeroed out, anything extra taken away marked as yellow, leaving green-yellow=20 with both already in their own row/column, so only had to think about two colours.
That's indeed easier. Well found!
Solved this one all by myself...after I watched Simon do the break-in. :D I was already at 2+ hours on the clock when I decided to take a hint. Incredible solve, Simon!
Just finished it after a few hours, I don't know how long. I have to nominate this as a possible GOAT sudoku, it was completely amazing, it makes me want to do it again.
So:
180 + blue = 105 + purple + red ==> 75 + blue = purple + red ==> red = 75 + blue - purple
180 + green = 125 + grey + red ==> 55 + green = grey + red ==> red = 55 + green - grey
So:
75 + blue - purple = 55 + green - grey
==> 20 + blue - purple = green - grey ==> 20 + blue + grey = green + purple
So by Sudoku:
blue + grey = 10
green + purple = 30
Genious Simon!
"We are not cooking with gas... we are cooking with something very old and perhaps unignitable, but at least we are cooking now" absolutely beautiful
He actually Holy Moly'd this one 18:22
Simon probably called Phistomefel to create a "nice little puzzle" for Mark😈
Oh my stars and garters, even the introduction is an amazing one! This was quite possibly one of the funniest things that I have seen on this channel to date - and also, truly a fantastic solve! My compliments!
To say this puzzle is brutally hard is a bit of an understatement. An excellent solve by Simon.
10:55 Here's the math on how you find the 1,2,3,4 & 6,7,8,9 quadruples for those who struggled to follow it mentally:
180 = 105 + Red + Purple - Blue
180 = 125 + Red + Grey - Green (equate the two sides on the right to each other and simplify)
Purple + Green = 20 + Grey + Blue
Therefore:
Purple + Green = 30 (6,7,8,9)
Grey + Blue = 10 (1,2,3,4)
It's an absolute MONSTER of a puzzle, and yet he gets it done in less than 30 minutes... what on EARTH???
Simon: I’m sorry, I’m sure you are all screaming at me through the screen because you see something. Me: *not having a clue in the world on how to solve this puzzle but just enjoys watching them*
It IS a pretty approachable puzzle, once you get past that monstrous trick in the beginning!
Well, Mark was right. It was approachable. Once you got that first trick. I just would have loved to hear that phone call!!!
I'm not a patron supporter (just found out about your channel a few weeks ago) but I did try (and eventually solve) the free Puzzle Hunt sudoku and it was absolutely brilliant! Tricky to get started but so satisfying when you figure out the dates needed.
This was a really impressive solve. That logic in the beginning is just insane. Needless to say that after that introduction from Mark, I didn't even bother clicking on the link xD
That was absolutely beautiful. The prank was hilarious, and then we also got an incredible solve video. Fantastic. Thank you!
Not sure whether or not it has been announced someplace but ...:
I love the new intro. Having the puzzle title shown after the presenters gives me time to prepare myself for it and not miss it.
The whole sequence is also very pretty and calming (this is the best word that came to mind to describe it). Although the light blue letters could do with a hint more contrast to the background.
I legit had to write everything down before I understood where the hell he took 20 from and how he came to next conclusion
You know Mark is in trouble when Simon used his full name.
Big fan Simon. This is a very fun video to watch. I love little drama between the two of you. (Last similar scenario was the sudoku with 0 and you shifted the puzzle to +1 without telling mark the trick.) Can we have more of them? But I guess if pranking becomes the norm, it will be less effective.
Yeah I definitely was screaming at my monitor. But I was screaming, "What?! What does that even mean?! How do you know that?!"
How do two sudoku solvers prank each other? By telling the other the puzzle is easy when it's actually difficult! This must be the nerdiest prank I have ever witnessed in my life.
At 17:43, with Simon trying to find an example of something he's cooking with, this quote from Red Dwarf came to mind:
"It's just not possible to fry an egg using a bicycle-powered HAIR DRYER!"
That's what Simon's cooking with in this puzzle :P
And yet, the meal was delicious all the same. My compliments to the chef. You did excellently, Simon. And ahaupt, at that :D
Thanks for including Mark's disclaimer at the beginning, that would not have been funny without it!
When Simon said he was going to ring Mark, I anticipated him saying he was going to wring Mark's neck.
That was the most amazing solve that I've ever seen.

If anybody is wondering, Simon fills in the first digit in the puzzle at 17:30. It will take the full 10minutes before that for him to explain how he got that first digit.
