Dorian Yates is one of the few Mr Olympias I've heard (in recent times, anyway) who actually seems to have a good understanding of training principles and biomechanics. Sometimes when you hear the sort of advice that elite bodybuilders give out, it's becomes pretty clear that their success is more down to their genetics and drug routine, as opposed to any sort of in-depth knowledge about bodybuilding, but Dorian seems to be an exception to that.
Absolutely, 100%. I've followed bodybuilding since my teens in the 90s, and studied biomechanics in recent years (ongoing). Frankly, apart from Ben Pakukski (who has done the same RTS courses as I have), Dorian is the only Pro who talks any sense and who you can learn ANYTHING from. He's literally the only Mr O who seems to know how he got there! Most bodybuilders talk utter nonsense, but yes have the work ethic and genes to compensate. Bottom line, Yates was the only guy who trained with a rationale, maximised his potential by ~93, then started getting injured. Levrone and some others may have had better genes, but weren't consistent, as focused, and lacked any real scientific approach. A lot of the old guard like Arnold and Tom Platz (who I'm a big fan of) still preach a lot of nonsense to be honest. Appear to have learned zero since their competition days, not to take anything away from them! But I don't believe they ought to be telling people how to train, ironically!
@@BodyOpt and John Meadows alias mountaindog1 . Check it out
He said in one of his interviews that they didnt have all the advanced knowledge at that time (like we have now with the help of internet) so he read a lot of books, magazines and stuff and applied it to his training.
Guarenteed. New era relies on 15 drugs heavy dosges to do all the work. Most of the time they're just playing with their phone and using hammer strength.
i get the feeling most bodybuilders even if there long retired deep down dont like giving advise, that hyper competitive mind set is still there. arnold is the worst for it, he admits back in the 70s he would give the wrong and mis leading advise to those who asked him. most of them hate the idea of anyone getting better than them or better than how thay were. there rule is always give nothing away. yates is just very diffrent like that, he dosent feel the need to bring others down, he rather lift people up, rare thing in someone.
The Humble Shadow.
You can just feel he's a really nice guy, big up Dorian!
I was a huge fan of yours in the 90's, you inspired me to train hard and consistently in your style. It is great to see that you are doing well these days
One of the few, who's honest, humble, informative, and INTELLIGENT,in the fitness industry!!!True Champ,Master class Trainer,Hardcore Athlete,a LEGEND from the "age of the real Bodybuilding"!
Well, wise words from the man itself! Thanks DY! 🙏
My pleasure!
Such a smart man. He's surely one of the best in our lifetime. Very articulate and precise. Als just straightforward
Terrific, clear advice and from someone who's actually been at the sharp end. Good, old fashioned 'plain English' without loads of trendy jargon.
As simple as that ! I train 3 times a week on a 2 way split and still makes progres at 57 years old. Day1 : rear delts , back and legs day2 : chest, delts and arms . Cardio and abs on Sundays. I think that is a good approuch for us over 50. Stay strong . CoachT
sounds like a plan for me? could you elaborate what a two week training looks like for you?
Hey Ed. Sure thing. I am busy coaching new clients this week in my gym in Denmark . I will look into it during the weekend. Mail me on thomashald@outlook.dk
Stay strong
Very good advice
Glad it was helpful!
Loved this. What great advice, thank you.
Thumbs up from me 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent information know your unique metabolism
The best Bb of al times mr.Yates
good one
Awesome Advise
Great advise. .. I just doin a basic. Push /pull. /legs. .. lots of rest .good food .. legs focus so I split leg workout to 2 days a week .. so that 4 days all up week ..
I noticed this week that my workouts have gotten shorter, fewer exercises, and way fewer sets than I did a year ago. At first I was discouraged thinking that turning 45 in a couple months is taking its toll, but Dorian just reminded me that as you advance, you need MORE recovery time and generate more systemic fatigue. Now it makes sense. I'm quite happy with the gains from the past 2 years of lifting.
How many days a week do you train and for how long is each session?
@@adamk4733 2-4 days per week (usually 3), 1 hour or less per session
Dorian Yates ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Best advice ever!!!
mauahha
Wrong title but great advise as usual. Dorian the yoda of BB.
A word to the wise, from the wise!
First time a pro bodybuilder actually gives helpful advices for natural lifters without telling them to lift 6 times a week and eat 5k calories.
The man.
I’ve got the old book “a warriors story” by Dorian... how about that two workout split: work out one- chest back shoulders. Workout 2- legs and arms I’m two weeks into this program. On my 11th month of lifting.
Great program, definitely continue with that.
Hey Dorian I'm your huge admirer ,I love your personality your way of teaching us the real meaning of hard work and dedication
Genuinely good geezer
So do you train ( Monday - Wednesday - Friday ) and take the weekend off Saturday and Sunday also Tuesday - Thursday are off days
When I was younger I did weight lifting for several years. I tried Dorian's method of intensity with short workouts, but there was a problem. I would achieve good intensity, but my muscles won't recover in a week. I was soar for 3-4 days and then it took several more days to recover. I did not know it at the time but most bodybuilders who train very intensively also take steroids and hormones to assist their recovery. If you are a natural bodybuilder very intensive training can lead to prolonged recovery periods, often with no gains to show for.
For natural bodybuilders it's best to switch between intensive workouts and less intensive workouts with more reps.
In any case I did not gain crazy muscles, but I build good structure of bone density and good enough strength.

What age, What age WHAT AGE should one start at?
Thats the answer i was loolong for
Ummm..... So, according to the title, at what age should one start working out?
The question put up was what age to start. Did he give an age?
What Dorian Yates ad Mike Mentzer helped me the most with, as a PT, was to break the idea of folk dogma that is everywhere in fitness. Learn the principles of intensity and recovery and apply them to proper biomechanics people!
what is the folk dogma you are referring to?
@@joshuavd5194 mainly more volume and higher teaining frequencies.
@@MrJabbothehut Ok got ya. higher volume and frequency is normally better for strength.
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines you need to seriously get a life you literally look for every DY video to try and shut him down but it never works
@Old Skool Bodybuilding Routines no you arnie lovers need to get a grip and accept what actually works you delusion small person
A true beast of body building. And a lovely beard. Should have had one 92 to 97
Wonder how much he'd charge for a twice a week PT. Few quid bo doubt
Im doing 3 times a week.
Mon: Legs
Tue: rest
Wen: Chest, Biceps & Side Delts.
Thu: rest
Fri: Back & Rear Delts
Sat: rest
Sun: rest
Repeat
Maybe I start doing 4 days a week in a couple of years.
Front delts and triceps? I know you are hitting them on your chest day but some direct work might help
@@daniel-jn8zb im changing to a 4 day now.
1. Legs
2. Chest & Biceps
3. rest
4. Shoulders & Triceps
5. Back & Rear Delts
6. rest
7. rest
Repeat
@@AndreasNilsson96 If you are training intensely, I would do Dorian's split instead in which you have a rest day after legs since it's the most taxing workout.
So 1. Shoulders, triceps, traps, abs
2. Back, rear delts
3. Rest
4. Chest & Biceps
5. Legs
6. Rest
7. Rest again or repeat
Just a tip
@@voodoochile6796 yeah. I used to do that for a while but I was so tired on friday that I didnt perfomed as good on legs. I changed it to legs on monday when im well rested & also to get the legday over with.
My legs are a strongpart for me & the back is the weakest so maybe i should swith so i have back on monday & legs on friday instead.
@@AndreasNilsson96 Yes I would recommend that. I'm now trying Dorian's old upper/lower split with a lot more rest but training everything every 5 days instead of 6. My legs are huge and strong aswell.
I don't think he actually mentioned what age you should start training. The advice was solid, something i wish i had heard before starting, but the title of the video should be different.
It is clear and obvious that there is a way to do this sport, because Dorian and Milos Sarcev look as healthy as can be be. (Yes I understand looks can be deceiving...but look at Paul Dillett for example.)
For the algorithm...
