My guest is Dr. Kelly McGonigal. She's a Stanford psychologist, award winning science writer and the author of multiple international best-selling books, including her most recent, The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection and Courage.
This conversation is all about movement; why movement is essential for our brains, our bodies, and our relationships. We’ve all heard how important movement is for our physical health but actually, in so many ways, I think we have undersold movement. Kelly shares some amazing insights and science about movement, which you may have never heard before.

You got me think about something in my routine. I hate gyms. But I rollerblade in park 3 times a week for 2-2.5 hours. And I always have music in my ears. Sometimes I do a little dance as I am passing ppl jogging, running or so…I always get them smiling. And it also makes me feel good that I put smile on someone’s face. Good mood is contagious for real.

Wow. She really nailed something I've been contemplating. I'm a farmer and super busy during the growing season. I feel healthy and so alive during this time. Constantly working and moving. When winter comes on and I get holed up in the house, I get so depressed. Life loses meaning and sense of purpose. I get incredibly bored. I got a treadmill in January. Simply getting on for a brisk 15 minute walk to music was just the medicine I needed to get through.

Do NOT stop going to the gym.
Modern life is set up in a way that makes getting physical activity & muscular exertion harder to fit in. Sure you can get some from daily life if you make an effort, but putting in a few days at the gym a week will go a long way toward health, wellness & longevity.

    • @sophistpig

No way. Gyms are such a downer for many - the machines, the smells, the feeling of lack of community despite being surrounded by others (all looking at their own screens), the lack of anything beautiful in the environment, the list goes on. No matter the workout, I always leave feeling depleted in mood. My exercise will always be outdoors and uplifting.

It’s all about your mindset. I use the gym as a place to be in a meditative state in my head with a good music playlist going and getting in touch with a more primal energy level.
If you find something that will challenge your muscle, strength & cardio outside of the gym that you enjoy, then I say go for it. Not many ways to work out bodies in such a way in modern times outside of some sports, even then, a lot of them are better for lower body strength and not necessarily upper.

Actually I know some ppl that are exactly like me, and will do anything else but gym. Many are runners or bikers. One friend is a dancer, on semi serious level. Again, find what you like instead of fighting yourself to go where you fundamentally don’t want to be. Gym doesn’t have to be everything.

I'm sorry Doctor Chatterjee, but you're in danger of traveling the CZcams hits/clicks/BS train past the point of no return.
You've had a tremendous positive impact on my life (and thousands of others), but I really hope you read this criticism and make of it what you will.
Firstly, the titles and especially thumbnails are really bad these days. They're only missing the duck face and Photoshop bits vis-a-vis the vein of the crassest, now-failing once-popular channels.
Also, been meaning to say this for a while, but compilations, clips etc should be labelled clearly. I want to know when you have a new conversation with Dr Matthew Walker - not realise 15 minutes in that it's a rehash of one of the last 3 conversations.
Love the long form interviews though. The depth and nuance is imperative in order to address these complex topics which have had years of mostly bad messaging from "authoritative" sources. So ignore the "these are too long, who the hell will listen?" brigade IMO.
    ----------------
As regards this particular episode, I usually happily look past stuff I might disagree with (and even hope to learn how I might be wrong in my outlook). Especially the small stuff. But the mention of a certain "celebrity" in a positive light 2 minutes in - someone who's the antithesis of what you and say, Dr Jamnadas would uphold as an ideal - really makes this hard to take seriously.
