For most purposes the Etrex SE might just be the best imo
background music too loud
Thanks for your feedback, it is appreciated.
What would be appreciated is if you re-uploaded it with quieter music
Kayak-er here. The buttons on my Forerunner 205 finally fell out rendering it useless and not water tight. I'm really just interested in time, distance and speed as a training tool. Thinking this might be the way to go. Any other budget units I should consider ? Thanks.
It sounds like the eTrex we would meet all your requirements, a cracking little unit. Here I am out with it - czcams.com/video/DhLmOy1zji8/video.htmlsi=MrgRxKPnDsMP7LUT
So the SE doesn’t have the ability to upload pre made maps of a river and it’s channel? Bought it for an ultra marathon and doesn’t seem to have the map features I was looking for
You are correct, this video may help - czcams.com/video/DhLmOy1zji8/video.html
well.. the most important question - how accurate are the receivers? I am munrobagging with a garmin bike gps and my phone as a backup, and unfortunately, both show the underlying philosophy of being 'fast moving tracking' devices. If you ride a bike a car, or you run, gps nicely tracks as it can easily predict the direction you are going. But when you hike, you move much slower and then the gps starts 'dancing' due to inaccuracy of the positioning, plus, if you are really lost, and you turn a lot, moving slowly, the devices do more harm than good. I need a device that I can upload a gpx file to, having an ability to overlay that track on top of topo map would be awesome. Colour display is not relevant to me.
Many thanks for your question, you will find this video useful as we look at that subject in depth - czcams.com/video/YgFdbmQBi18/video.htmlsi=Y5jqvQX8JVK4ucXd
I think you put a little too much importance on the electronic compass. You should have a rough idea where you are anyway, and if not sure just walk a few steps and the GPS compass will do its job. I don’t know a situation where I absolutely needed an electronic compass. The 22x is significantly cheaper than the 32x in retail and would be my first choice for budget GPS, also over the SE due to its lack of maps.
I agree used a 22x on a 35 days trip off grid and you just walk 10 steps and the screen direction updates really not a problem
Hi do you think that a fenix 7 watch could replace your hand held gps.
If you are doing a long distance trail/ ultra event etc a watch will work, but with the lack of OS maps on a watch you will struggle. If you watch my ‘walk and talk’ with the EPIX you will see me try and fail in open hillground (9 mins in) - czcams.com/video/KOSi2dEFWAI/video.html
What if you installed talky toaster maps on the watch would that work.
I had a fenix 5 a few years ago and you could install OSmaps onto it, but garmin changed the maps in their newer maps.
Excellent info - only marred by the distracting music.
Taken onboard, the 2024 review, coming out in the next month will have no music, I promise!
