Had to do that plenty of time when I was driving. You normally have enough time to run in if there are no problems, but if your encounter issues on route then it a night out and a run in on the morning. I stopped driving not long after they brought in Digital Tacho Cards. I once had enough time left on a Friday to go and drop the Bosses car off with another driver and he drove that back to the yard and I drove his truck back, as He had to be home. I can see where your coming from, as we could drive to our Driving time limit and then jump in our cars and drive a long distance in that. Not recommended but you could if you wanted to.

It would have been better if i just drove to the yard and had a nice nights sleep at home in my own bed without having to get up in the middle of the night. Its also not worth the pay, who gets up at 2am to do half an hours drive and as i'm paid by the hour, I earn half an hours pay. I'd rather be home, Sadly the traffic is always terrible on a Friday evening, which is why i get stuck out, any other day with normal traffic i'd make it back.

Happened to me a few times but that’s how we run on occasion. Usually from the south of England up to above Edinburgh/Central belt Scotland. Definitely not the norm. Some have a couple of MPH on tap and could make it further north or get that ferry scrosd the Irish Sea.. not me though. If we ‘run out’ we get ‘rescued’ unless we are way off which hasn’t happened to me as of yet. Generally our planners try to get up parked up far enough north(of London mainly) so we can get a decent collection to run home . Personally try to retain a 10hr drive/15 hour day for that final shift although that’s not always possible.

Agreed. But also they do cost lives as well. Drivers in a rush to get to places on time or stopped by a certain time can mean accidents happen. Just the same as tiredness.
For an industry that is so restricted with drive times etc, we don't half have our time wasted places with processes that make it more difficult for us to get on with our day.
