  • I was SO tired of the seat on my 2015 Yamaha FJ-09. I was also tired of seeing $500-900 dollar price tags for a replacement seat that would be comfortable.
    I'll be testing this seat this year as I ride.
    Hoping it holds up, but also hoping I hold up over more and more miles enjoyed on this otherwise AWESOME motorbike

    Great job. I bought a seat from Seat Concepts. They sent me a new pad and cover for about $90. I had to remove and restaple the cover. You are right - some spots were a real pain to get to.

    Will post a review of this 'mod' shortly.
    So far... I think it could use much fine tuning as far as foam placement. BUT, as it is....
    Where before my butt got super tired after about 45 mins of riding... I can now ride for 1.5-2 hours before having to take a break, or become uncomfortable.

    It's been 3 month now. What is the modified seat like?

    Great video. I've been playing with the idea of making my own seat for a while now. This video makes it look actually doable.
    How comfortable was it to ride on? Would you have used a different foam?

    I was thinking that the foam you used was a little stiff?

    So, how did it go?

    Yes, Nowell... tell us all how it worked out. Was it worth the effort or would you just buy an aftermarket FJ-09 seat?

    I bought two pairs of cycling shorts for £10 off ebay also. Has padding in all the right places and makes my luggage look bigger in my leathers lol. I am going to try this because I have the official Yamaha comfort seat and although it helps it isn't great.

      Was exactly my problem, yamaha own comfort seat sucked balls. Atleast on my 1190 Powerparts seat they improved the comfort.

      Cycling shorts have been my riding underwear for a long time. The padding helps a lot, and the spandex stretch fabric helps relieve the "hot spots" that form where your thighs roll off the seat.

    How was it?

    Nowell, I tried so many seats and ended up customizing my stock FJ09 seat and now my feet don't touch the ground as easy...that is the one drawback to adding foam...wish there was a solution but i can't find one...

    • @NowellHolmes
      @NowellHolmes  Před 6 lety

      joeldude1 what about address my foam to the seat, then lowering your suspension? Or is ground clearance an issue? I have a 34.5” inseam. So I’m not worried about touching the ground :)

    Very cool, you might have just inspired me to try this, I totally agree the stock FJ09 seat SUCKS. But what is the report on how it worked out???

    • @NowellHolmes
      @NowellHolmes  Před 7 lety +1

      I'll be doing a bit of riding hopefully this weekend, and can't WAIT to try it out myself for a good long ride. Sitting on it for about 45 mins just sitting in the shop was 1000 times better. The seat was so bad, last season I did all my longer rides wearing a pair of mens cycling pants with built-in Gel padding in the ass of them. haha it was effective! :)

      @NowellHolmes  Před 5 lety +1

      tankas it’s not bad! I can ride for 2 hours now without my ass feeling like it’s gonna fall off. Previously after 20 mins it was extremely uncomfortable. With minor adjustments to the fitting of the foam, this really is great! I’d cut the foam slab I added on a bit wider near the edges of the seat to make it “fatter”... or to get mote foam bear the edges of the seat pan. Having this makes it feel so much better.... and saved me 700 bucks vs a good quality aftermarket (overpriced) seat.

    So you have a "butt bone" right in the middle?? You are made very differently to me my friend 😄. I suspect the pressure point is elsewhere. Interesting video though, thank you.

  • @Trevinator1990
    @Trevinator1990 Před 4 lety

    you say this is the worst seat ever? you have clearly never sat on a kawasaki versys then...... the top of the seat is round, so the pressure is COMPLETELY on the tailbone! comparatively, the fj-09 seat is bliss! but even still, i will likely get a different setup.
