TOPSOIL - GRADING - SODDING - A LAKESIDE RESIDENTIAL SUBDIVISION (THE FULL PROCESS)

- In this video we start topsoiling, grading and sodding a residential subdivision near a lake. Step one is loading topsoil from the on site stock pile to the lots with a dump truck. the we use our case 550h dozer and skid steers to roughly spread all the soil adequately. Then we go back to do a fine grading carve out the swales and rake. Also install gravel between the homes with less then 8 feet of space where grass is likely to not survive. Final step is to install the grass , roll it and get water on it.

lol oh yeah I’m not a fan either but that’s how it’s done in our area. Many houses have less space. These tightest ones are 6 feet apart. But many subdivisions are only 4 feet apart!

@@aaronburford5701 we see all sorts of different soils in an hour radius from nice sandy soils like this site, to clay loam types and very rocky. We work in southern Ontario

I started running tractors and skid steers at about 4-5 years old. So I’ve been at it for 30 years now

Oh yeah man they are a necessity now a days with the proximity homes are built of each other! Many places we’ve encountered where even the PT 30 doesn’t fit! We struggle to get a wheelbarrow in there lol

Did you shoot points on it to be sure the water is flowing correctly? It honestly looks like that back area where all the sod is will pool in the center in many areas and/or flow towards the houses.
No we don’t typically shoot unless it’s close. We do thousands of homes a year and have a pretty good eye for getting the grades right, as well as bench marks like the heights at the house and grade stakes at the rear.
This grade is designed to be lowest in the middle of the yard, and then slope to the side yards and out to the street from there.
Very rarely the drainage doesn’t work, and that’s usually due to some type of problem with the building where we can’t achieve enough slope.

very informative! I am going to rent a small skid steer to dig 5-6 inches of top soil for my backyard project. Should I start excavating from the highest point to low point of my existing grade? and does "float mode" help in maintaining the grade? Sorry I never used skid steer so wondering how to effectively use it. Thank you!
Personally I never use float mode as it doesn’t really cut anything if needed. And it all depends how it’s laid out where to start and how much room you have to work. Usually in a smaller backyard I start at one end and work my way out. If it’s bigger and good access then whichever way is easiest

Why use the kubota while you had an asv machine there or trex smaller size doesn't make sense but good skills

@@dblkouzam well I’m the backyard is the bigger space so we use the bigger skidsteers! Lol we try to use the bigger ones where possible. If it’s really to tight or won’t fit then yes we use the small one. They just aren’t anywhere near as smooth or efficient compared to bigger ones
Sod has gaps in it aye .. Why not pack jam close together.
They are laid together lol. It’s thousands of pieces to install of course you see the seems which you’re confusing for gaps. If watered properly in 3-4 weeks I assure you there is no “gaps” or seems

Haha I agree with you there! We do well over a thousand homes a year and I’d say about 95% of the homes we do have 4 feet to the property line or less. Very common now to make the most of land
