    Love your batreps. I think this game is deceptive in that it is easy and fast to play but actually has quite some depth once you play it a couple times. Some important missed interactions:
    1. Hear me Roar is just a modifier to a Panic Test, not an additional test.
    2. Cavalry gets to make a free Maneuver when they activate.
    3. The Guard Captain can be used against any Panic test.
    4. You are not allowed to play cards on a disorderly charge (roll of 1 for charge range).

    about the component heavy... actually I like it, it needs a large table (althrough the game is 4'x4') but you can see what the enemy does and what you see at all time without asking for a Codex or searching in a tablet through an army maker.

    The Tyrell's supported Renly Baratheon so if the game takes place during the Clash of Kings they will likely be part of Renly' s forces. There were give groups fighting for the crown; Lannister, Stark, Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, and the Greyjoys. They have also already announced the Night's Watch and the Wildlings.

    • @lonepathfinder5486
      @lonepathfinder5486 Před 5 lety

      I think Tyrell has enough "size" and diversity to be their own house without merging. It is a great house after all, not a minor house. So Tyrell, Martel, Baratheon, Night's Watch, Free Folk, Dathraki, Greyjoys. Not sure about Targarians.

      Also even when a unit takes no casualties from an attack they still count as having taken and passed the test for any abilities that proc from passing a panic test so at about 38 minutes in when your cav attacked jamie they should have taken a lannister suppremecy test which may have finished him off before he killed jamie

I really like the tactics card system in play and while I know some people will disagree I think it's a great way to define a force's strengths without having to memorize a bunch of special unit rules and what not. Great report! watching my first game, I had the same reservations as the most comments I see. But having played 6+ games now I really like this game. (former WTC warmahordes player here)
    I like the quick games and the tacticsboard and cards. It forces you to understand your opponents army as well for counterplay. The argument that there are a lot of "gotcha's" I can understand at first sight. But this is not a game where you can just smash models against each other and rol dice. If you know you opponents deck you can anticipate. And allthough it's 20 something cards, all cards are double so not that many effects for a certain situation that can screw you over.
    Regarding the random charges:
    Since its objective based you are already in range of each other anyway, so most of the time it's only about rolling that one for disorderly. when you need to roll 4+, maybe not charge?
    Just my 2 cents!

    @blackbearivan Před 5 lety +1

    Nice game. pretty terrain and board and also minis.
    i think one thing that people in the comments have not completely appreciated is the impact the terrain setup had on this game.
    On the one hand, you have the lannisters who have better defense and counter attack abilities. with mountain as a break through unit. the board is also set up with narrow chokes
    On the other hand you have the starks whose greatest strength is maneuverability. Quite apart from missing some important rules (cavalry, and it appears that orders were also neglected) and also choosing not to utilize grey wind as a flanker, the space doesnt allow for much maneuvering
    It should come as no surprise that the lannisters are able to hold the chokes and break through the stark line with the mountain in these conditions. I imagine that there may have been alternative strategies that could have helped the starks gain a better battlefield advantage. appreciating this will come with experience.
    In the games i have played, in a more open set up the starks have a strong advantage which forces a lannister player to go on the defensive. I would also add that the impact of terrain, positioning and maneuvering is a "wargame feature" which was not obviously showcased in this match. Something for people to consider before deciding that it is "too board gamey".
    Having said that, good batrep, well played lannister

  • @lonepathfinder5486
    @lonepathfinder5486 Před 5 lety

    Thanks for another great Batt-rep. This games looks really interesting. Love the depth of tactics - Manoeuvring of units, manoeuvring off the battlefield by non-combatants. The flavour of the cards influenced by the house as a majority but also influenced by your choice of commander. Obviously a lot of bribery by Cercei Lannister, maybe a bit OP, maybe the panic test should be at -1, not -2?
    Robb didn't get much involved in the battle, even with his additional manoeuvring capability. I think tactically Grey Wind was wasted since he has this great ability to make units vulnerable when charging in the flank.
    The rolls you guys made were at both ends of extreme - snake-eyes and 2+1 for moral tests or otherwise 5's and 6's. So this makes for a skewed perspective.
    Overall a great report, great game, great potential. I think the game is WHFB simplified and takes 1/2 the time to play, but actually has more depth. I also like that only in extreme cases do individuals have direct combat impacts (the Mountain), but otherwise the heroes influence the units through tactics, not through brute force. This also enables the perception of each model representing 25-odd actual soldiers each. So a unit of 12 actually represents 300 soldiers and 4 horses are 100 cavalry.
    I'm definitely moving here rather than Age of Sigmar. This has so much more potential. I might start the game with some Free Folk and their Giants, coming out next with the Night's Watch. What I have seen of the quality of the miniatures, I am very impressed. You guys didn't say much about the sculpts or the quality of the models. Thoughts?
    Will you do more reports for this game, with some variance, different scenarios, maybe replace Cercei with other options and different commanders to see how the tactics changes with changes in commanders?

I also appreciate the decision to actually case bases and weapon arms in harder HIPs plastic so they aren't 'bendy' and actually hold a straight line. I imagine when a tight packed unit of 12 models, each model actually representing 25 soldiers (in my imagination, not officially), these units get to expand somewhat when units are wounded, slain or run in fear. So the tray is still a representation of the unit, and the model count is a representation of the health of the unit.

    I love this game. I think its one of the best starter boxes going.. for any game. I felt like you two awesome fellows kinda blew through this game and seemed to be going through the motions a little bit. As the game fleshes out a bit more it will be amazing. Ive played several games of Adeptus titanicus this past week and found it boring and repetitive by comparison.. and i like it a great deal anyway. I was hoping you guys would like it. Perhaps you do but your comments at the end seemed like it was a garbage game. You got several rules wrong unfortunately which would have changed things. I also thought that the theme of this game is very important but you didn't touch on the theme of any of the cards or characters at all... its not a problem. But it does add so much to the game.

      @@cptamerica011 my comment is not meant to unfair to anyone. I watch almost all GMGs videos. But the speed at which the game play was done on this video threw me off. I don't have a problem with anyone not liking anything at all. I have been wargaming for the same amount of time as Ash and played as many games (maybe). I have a young family also and now that I'm close to 40 I find my tastes in games changing. I WANT a game to only last a few hours at most now. The panic tests taking away models and then being healed right back only to be taken away again one right after the other was an odd sequence that i have yet to replicate in any of the games of ASoIaF ive played. But the sheer speed at which it went left me thinking that they were just going though the motions.. "yeah yeah let get on to the next one". By comparison Ashs gameplay of Gaslands and that other indy game (made by a local fellow) was much more descriptive and slower paced allowing me to follow along with the game and the narrative of what the game was trying to accomplish. I loved every minute of it. This game was super fast. Even the discussion at the end was not really a review. More of like a "what i had an issue with" segment. Even the pacing of their talking seemed to say they were rushing thorough it. It was hard to follow due to the speed. Its nothing personal I like both their channels and watch regularly. But the heart of this game in my opinion is the flavour of the units and the narrative of the tactics board.. none of which seemed to be on display. For an example I re watched both their videos on Adeptus titanicus and that game is all rolling dice... over and over.. hardly moving at all. Very basic game. But they played it at a slower pace. I then watched BoLS video on the same game and it was just as good but the players were very descriptive of what was happening all the time.. on every roll. It was the same game but much more exciting to watch.. tense and descriptive. What im trying to say is that if your not into something.. or you have a predisposition to something its going to come across no matter what. It seemed like that to me. Review a game because I should, but i know I'm not really a fan right now so i probably won't be even after I play it. If Ash and Owen are thinking that its perfectly fine with me.. its just my opinion that people should give it a chance. That's all. I wasn't trying to be unfair to anyone :)

Pulls from both types and doesn't add anything exciting. I think it would have been better to either go straight board game or miniatures game. Not a fan of all the clutter either. I think the idea of having a wargame going on with a side board of politics is a really cool and has a lot of potential. I just wish it was executed better. It's kinda the Battlemasters to WHFB. I can see the price point scaring people off of expansions unless they're just looking for something cool to paint. The political sideboard is a nice addition IMO. Everything done on the board has an effect on the combat units and knowing when to maximize your abilities, or cut off your opponent's political move is fun. To be honest, I have wanted a tabletop game set in the GoT/ASoIaF IP, since I started watching the show. However, although I love tabletop games, I often find when it comes to card games, I lose cards over time and that could be crippling in a game.
    The alterations that I would make would be to have a small book for each of the armies (like a codex) with rules for the units and the leaders. Get rid of all the cards, but keep the bit where you put Sansa, Cersei etc as that mechanic is pretty nice.
    Have the cards instead as a page or two in the small book, for each army to stop you from losing them. The models look really good (though I’d rather avoid painting faces) and I think this game has a crap tonne of potential.

    • @lonepathfinder5486
      @lonepathfinder5486 Před 5 lety

      It's called reinforcements. If you read the cards that actually replenish, you see the different influences in more detail. I agree with the epic scale, because it has these simple rules that can be applied to any variations. I assume each model represents 25 actual model - Mountain that rides is with his 24 sadistic friends and bodyguard, Grey Wind has a wolf pack that he leads, and the rest are regular units and with some elite units. So 3 full units with a cavalry unit actually represent 1000 men. With a 50 point list you can easily get to 2000 men on the field.

I felt dragged out of the theme and logic of the game with all the cards and throne plays and weird things happening like random routes and healing??? What is the explanation for it? Feels over encumbered by the components and attempt to make mechanics around the IPs theme, spreading itself pretty thin when I think it should've focused on the miniature warfare of the IP, there's plenty of games to fill in the other themes of asoiaf.
    Thanks for the batrep and details on the after game report. Hopefully the game will reel in some players that weren't miniature gamers before and we can get them into the other games available.

      Some of the card stuff is really abstract I agree, but without this extra layer it would be a simple medieval mass combat game. As Ash said you have no magic and all the troops are human with similar technology levels. Also all the great characters from the books who do not ever see the field of battle would have a very small role to play in the game.
      The FF board game contains a lot of similar elements but obviously without the cool miniatures. Is this just a vehicle for cool miniatures? Yeah it probably is but that doesn't make it a bad game.

      You've got to look at it slightly differently. Imagine Cercei bribing guards before the battle to leave the field, or threatening to kill their loved ones. So they run away. Or on the one hand, they might join the other army as reinforcements because they will get better food and weapons. Stark army has better moral than Lannister, which is very thematic, as they are more loyal. So I think that using the imagination and reflecting on what happening the fictional universe of ASOIAF, this game matches perfectly what happens in the story. Panic tests are a way to represent the fluctuations of war and politics. Maybe they could have made for variations of the tests, but that is all in the descriptions and "Name" of the cards. So to keep it simple all such influences are through moral tests. Makes for a faster game.

      The actual combat mechanics, with the random charges and 2d6 morale check is reminiscent of WHFB, whose mechanics are simply dated. This is from the company who brought us Wrath of Kings which is one of the cleanest (if not the cleanest) fantasy skirmish systems out there, so surely they could have sped up combat resolution even on a rank n flank game. For the off-board mechanics, I think SAGA would be another really good system to look at for ideas. Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head for a hybrid game of this type.

      I think the actual question should be; What is the target market this game was designed to sell to? CMON is a board game business (a lot of which use miniatures) but there's a difference between a board game played with miniatures and a traditional miniature wargame... which is why folks will gravitate to one or the other. When they 'aim' game design at a market that influences what they make a lot. Obviously tastes vary and I guess that the point of discussion. :) The design credits of both the named Authors are primarily in the board game world, not the miniature wargaming world (which is fine) and I guess that is why this game straddles both worlds a bit more than normal.
