This guy be saying facts
O no
I’m having a head ache just seeing it how does this thing work
Its hanging and almost falling but then the two other ropes keep it up it’s damn stupid
How this works:
The small one is the one that helps it hang.
The bigger one's act as stabilizing pillars for the small one not to tilt, move or bend too much.
Which is held together by the tension in the strings or chains.
I’m surprised by how many people are acting shocked and I’m unsure how many of them are joking... your explanation was my immediate first thought seeing the thumbnail, so I’m also surprised how many people think this is cursed
Yeah, it's really simple. But it gets a little more mind breaking if you see someone holding one of these up by the top piece/the whole thing hanging from another hook. Because now instead of just being stabilized, the entire bottom pillar is supported by the top.
Ya I assumed the short chain was the reason why it could do this, but it’s still mind boggling

Now we know where the reality stone went
I had never heard about tensegrity untill 24 hours ago, but yet I have already watched 34.583 videos on the subject since then.
I finally got it!
The "floating" peace is heavier in the left (from the thumbnail's angle) so it should tilt to the left if it were to fell, but given the other 2 chaibs are there, if it were to tilt it'd be lifting up the thing that's holding it. But given the stand is heavier than the left side of the floating thing
Thanks
dude i gonna comment that too but its ok your smart to physics
It's all about tension and compression forces. The chains are under tension, putting the arms under compression. In tensegrity structures, parts under tension are connected only to parts under compression and vice versa.
I like that you put Emmet on top at the end there. It seems like most people forgot about the LEGO Movie and it’s sequel by now.
The weight is on the 'J' section, the small chain downwards, while the two longer chains has upward tension. Thats why the balance.
You usually want another downward chain to keep things stable. Anything that pushes the top towards the back can cause it to collapse. With 3 "down" tension elements twisting is required and preload is easier.
Holy crap I just got it now, thank you for sharing your big brain knowledge! :)

Maybe have he reached the level above "working for lego"...
Because as a LEGO designer you have to move to / work in Billund. I've been there 2 days. That was enough.

@@BerthilvanBeek Could you tell us more about your experience? there? Thanks in advance
Damn, I haven't seen half of these pieces... I've been away from this subculture too long xD
Made it today, many thanks 👍
Beautiful
Anyone else still trying to figure out how he did that?
The short chain is holding everything up and because of the 2 long chains the upper part doesn't tip over. It's hard to describe, hope you get it
basically you have to think in terms of gradients, with the center of gravity trying to go down the gradient slope. since that chain in the bottom is holding it, and the center of gravity is further than the anchor point, it wants to rotate 'forward' but those two chains in the back are preventing it to rotate, effectively creating a local minima where the structure is stable. For the two other axis of rotation, the 2 chains in the back are also preventing it
It really isn't that hard to understand. The center chain is holding the structure up, while the two chains on the sides are preventing it from falling backwards
I like to think of it in terms of torques. If the two larger chains weren't there, the top part of the structure would rotate counterclockwise. But the two larger chains prevent it from doing that. That's why Emmet was placed on the right side of the structure, since, if he were placed on the left side of the structure, it would feel a clockwise torque, rotate clockwise, and collapse.
It's pretty simple but my English can't explain.

There are so many things you could make with this! This would be great for a "floating" island!
Man the physics behind this is incredible. I never thought to try something like this with my bricks. Gotta love how with this it can only fall in a 240 approximate arc towards the T section. Impressive work.
For anyone wondering, the ‘floating’ part floats due to an equilibrium of the forces. The clockwise momentum is equal to the anti-clockwise momentum.
that's amazing, thank you!
Helped me understand how tensegrity works better than any explanatory video could.
I know this has been said before but for the people who still dont get it, let's call the bottom bit the main part and the floating bit the floating bit (easy right?) So the chain coming from the top of the main part is pulling up on the floating bit and the floating part is connected on the sides with the two other chains which makes an equilibrium sort of balance where the first chain is holding the floating part up but the other 2 are just balancing it more, there can usually be three near the back side of it but that's just to make it even more balanced and wont tip over as often as that (hope this helps, this might not be the full explanation/might miss some facts or something so if you are smarter than be do comment :D)
I get it now. Thats pretty simple now that u explained it
Im not smarter than you, but I think the important bit (at least to me) would be mentioning that it's sort of leaning back, and thats what the 2 chains are preventing it from doing. You did say tip over, so I guess that covers it. But the way he picked it up to put it in place, it wouldnt fall that way, it would fall sort of backwards, but those 2 chains are preventing it from doing that. Thats where the balance is. Idk, I guess you covered it lol I just think that the "leaning back" or "falling backwards" helps me understand it, once I realized it.
Dude thank you, I was fucking wracking my brain trying to figure this out
The price is pretty steep for only 56 pieces, but still, this is an ingenious sculpture that just boggles the mind in terms of physics.
Why is this video so satisfying?
I bought one of these. It's a little easier to understand when you can feel how it's staying up, but it's still mind-blowing.

Much like myself, this table is held up only with constant stress and tension.
always had this in my recommended, so happy i clicked it
I enjoy these illusions
Oh wow It took my a while to realize how it works. I just kept thinking magnets 🤦♂️the lower chain makes it so it can't fall back and down from it's weight, and then the 2 side chains keep it perfectly straight so it only wants to fall back from it's weight.
I'm going insane looking at this. Every time I look at it to try and figure it out all I hear in my head is internal screaming
small hint
if you put the figure on the other end the thing should collapse
My thoughts on how it could work:
The upper part simplified as a beam, big O marks center of gravity:
oooOoooooooooo
| ^ |
V | V
Fg Fa Fb
Fg is pulling the whole upper piece down, gravity always attacks the Center of Gravity.
Fa is the force of the short chain. As this is the only force pointing upwards, it has to be as big as Fg+Fb ("actio" = "reactio")
Finally Fb pointing downwards compensates the torque (Force*lever), that Fa produced at the Center of Gravity.
The top section is suspended from the short chain. Normally, because the top section has most of its mass above and to the left (in this perspective) of where the hanging point is, gravity will pull it down by rotating it around that axis in an anti-clockwise direction (as we're looking at it here) until all of its mass is below the point from which it is suspended. But the two tethers on and to the right of the top section stop its rotation on that axis. There is an equilibrium in the forces pulling it down and holding it back.
Just imagine what would happen if those two long chains snapped. Can you visualise how the top would rotate left and down, until it was all below the short chain?
Made it. And it’s great!!!!!🤓🤓
I bought all the parts for this and made it!
