My MX-5 won’t unlock?!

  • This issue occurs out of nowhere, there’s no warning as a small spring snaps inside of the locking mechanism. The only way to unlock the door is to take out the door card and push the part the spring connects to. Attaching the new spring is fiddly as it’s a hard place to reach. The spring can be found from mx-5 parts in the link below. Take a look at the piston heads thread to get a better idea of where the spring goes.
Please like the video as it helps a lot!
    Thanks!

Thank you for the instruction. I was able to fix my door problem, which is exactly identical issue. In order to access the spring, roll up the window and you can reach the spring. If you use plier, you can attach both ends of the spring. The problem of the spring is that part of the spring wears out over time and breaks due to repeated action. Since it lost only few mm of the end, you can modify the existing spring with plier and reuse it. You don't need to buy a new spring at all.

Lock hasn’t worked for at least the 3 years we’ve had the car - took me 20 mins and £4.97 thanks to this video!

The key things to understand are that the spring holds the mechanism in place so the key can actuate it to unlock. Thus once the spring is broken it is necessary to hold the outside mechanism up as the spring would manually whilst you operate the key from outside. This is done by rotating the outside part of the mechanism inward. It is the only part of the mechanism that yield to light finger action so you will find it. I spent hours on this before realising the above so I hope this will save you time..

Thank you for this. Need to order a spring to fix it but I got my door open and don't have to climb in and out now.

Would be useful if you showed a clip of the lock making the u lock motion once the new spring has been fitted. I can't seem to jiggle the lock to get it to open

I'm having this problem with my car. What do you mean by "push the catch at the top right of the lock to the left"? I don't understand what part that is.

Hey, a better angle is probably at 2:58. You need to pull the two latches at the top right together just like the spring is doing. You need to try to unlock the door with the key at the same time. Hope that helps!

Okay I have the same problem. I challenge you to make a tutorial and connect both sides of the spring with the tools you have shown. This is more like here is the problem and here it is fix without really showing how you connect both sides of that spring.

This is the best I can do. Others have managed to fix it from this video 😀
