  • Bob Bigelow explains why standing up to coach kids basketball games is a symptom of overcoaching in today's game.
Bob Bigelow is a former NBA player who was drafted 13th overall and played for the Kansas City Kings, Boston Celtics, and San Diego Clippers. He has since dedicated himself to researching youth basketball in a bid to make sports better for kids. He published the book “Just let the Kids Play” in 2001 and has spoken and conducted thousands of sports clinics worldwide.
Bob Bigelow's drills and practice plans for coaching elementary school kids basketball can be found on the Practice Planner. Download it here: app.appsflyer.com/id985491490...

I feel the same way about Mr. Bob. Out of genuine curiosity, are you a coach or student of the game?

I only stand up when we start losing. Then I get all nervous and try to figure out how to get back into the game

My son's travel soccer coach asks questions instead of barking commands. He includes "What do you see?". I'm going to use this strategy with youth basketball this winter.

When I started coaching I used to do stand. yes I would yell out instructions. After a while I realized they weren't listening. I asked my son ( Who was on the team) did they ever hear me. Hear me ?
No was the answer. SO I sat down. Last night my team was scrimmaging in a gym with no stands and yes the coaches were standing and screaming. so I will be sitting from now on.

Well, I am not taller than the boys rec. league kids I coach, and I stand up so I can see and correct. I teach kids to get them out of rec. league and onto their school team. I appreciate the input on asking the kids what they saw, but mostly it's excuses. They think they are all pros, and can't take correction very well.

You sound like a coach that doesn't have a lot of faith in her players. Maybe you should consider another line of work.
