    Madrid or Valencia?
Two amazing cities with different personalities. Some things are better in Madrid and some are better in Valencia. It is a very personal choice and of course it depends what you like but in todays video I will give you my opinion about which city I like better to live. I will review transportation, culture, rent and more.

I was in the US Air Force stationed at Torrejon AFB 16 km from Madrid from '73 - '77. Over that time we explored a lot of Madrid, finding the city full of culture, festivals, architecture and large, homogeneous population. We really liked the city, but the crowds and pace of life were not my wife and mine cups of tea.
Madrid gets hot in Summer. Susie and I used to tent camp on the Mediterranean. We found Valencia to be more to our liking, so much so we sold our home in Maryland to move to Valencia permanently 4 years ago.
For us Valencia is perfect. I have trouble walking - Valencia is flat. The cost-of-living is very palatable. The population is much more diverse and accepting. Because of our Mediterranean climate, outdoor life is the name of the game. There is al fresco dinning everywhere. Oh, and do I need to mention the Mediterranean Sea itself!? We have a world class zoo and aquarium, an international airport, and many festivals, especially Las Fallas.
We find it hard to believe we are actually privileged to live here.

I completely agree with the comments in this video that this is a very fair and well-made video! You especially nailed the public transportation critique about Valencia; even though the metro is new, clean, and efficient, the actual metro stations are soooo incredibly spaced out from each other. For example, Alameda is the official stop for the City of Arts and Sciences, yet, its a 20+ minute walk away from the complex! I find that in general, I always do a lot of walking in Valencia, which is fine because its so gorgeous, but definitely not as metro-accessible as most other major cities. Thanks for your videos Antoanetta- they really helped me get familiar with Valencia before even moving here, and now its cool to know where each of the locations are that you're filming from :)

I have been living in Madrid for the last 12 years in Barrio de Salamanca and am contemplating moving to Valencia for retirement. The main thing that I feel has changed in Madrid is the weather, winters in Madrid used to be much milder and sunnier with occasional spells of rain in Jan, but now in winter temperature drops to -5 deg C within the Almendras (Not considering Cercedilla or Navacerrada where it gets blanketed in snow) and summers are extremely hot reaching somedays highs of 45 deg C. Pollution is much higher in Madrid (Madrid Capital) whereas in Valencia the air is so much cleaner. In recent years cost and quality of services have gone up much in Madrid, just came back from Valencia where a really nice coffee in Mercat Central cost 1.8 Euros whereas in Madrid a decent coffee takes you around 2.6 Euros. The biggest factor is the sea in Valencia, which moderates the temperature. Madrid presents great work opportunities and competitive salaries if you want a career but Valencia offers a better quality of life. My favorite neighborhood is El Cabanyal, super artistic and rustic and next to the beach 😃

thanks for the comment. it's funny that I've been living in Valencia for 4 years now, and now thinking of moving to Madrid (to your Barrio) I have 3 kids 8,6,2. I love Valencia the only thing that I don't like is the short-minded locals and a pueblo mintality. I found friends that we are super happyt with but they are from Argentina. We hoped to connect with locals but they are not exactly at the same mindset as we are. We lived in London, New York, LA, Moscow and my home town Montreal. So after all the huge cities Valencianos seem a bit closed minded. Very nice and friendly people but for us we found it hard to find friends like us. And the second reason is the kids, I have this beilive that in Madrid they will have a better life. So I don't know what is best. Valencia is a perfect city in so many ways. What are your thoughts about this?

Hmmm was just checking life expectancy and people live longest in areas near Madrid. Perhaps that is changing with the air quality? Also -5 😬. On the other hand, I noticed that many ground level windows have bars in Valencia and other areas near the sea in Spain. Doesn’t seem very safe.

Malaga is listed as one of the top expat choices according to Bloomberg. Valencia isn’t on the list this year at all. I don’t know why. I have also heard from people that Lisbon people are friendlier. There are many reasons I would love to live near Lisbon - probably not in city center. But I love that the water is warmer in Valencia since I’m a big beach/ water person. I love to swim and paddle board and I prefer to be on the Mediterranean Sea. I also like the flatness and the space. Biking and walking seem so easy to do in Valencia. And it seems like there are plenty of cultural things to do. I did find Valencia a bit dirty and chaotic though, and life in the neighborhoods seemed a bit boring. Overall, Valencia was a mixed bag for me, I had big expectations and it did not quite live up to them. Just my 2 cents.

Based on my experience, this is a balanced, accurate assessment. I've visited Madrid and recently "lived" in Valencia for one month. You're right that if someone is in need of work opportunities, support services, etc., Madrid is the better choice. If these resources are not needed, and the focus is on the Spanish lifestyle itself, Valencia might be better. But if you're from the US, Valencia will take some work in that you're likely to find many neighborhoods and businesses where little to no English is spoken. Some of us prefer that. I lived in Valencia for three months back in the '90s and loved it (I went back in 2015 for a week). I've been to Madrid four times so far and every time I like it even more. Madrid is my favorite European capital. I find that it is easier to meet people and make friends in Madrid. The Valencianos are in my opinion more reserved. I could live equally well in both cities. I wouldn't live in Barcelona as I find the smog and the humidity in summer extremely oppressive. Also one good thing about Valencia: besides having a beach of its own, it is close to other lovely places such as Alicante. And if you want to go to Madrid to spend a few days, it is 1h40 by train. What is not to like?

    • @Juan-xg4kr

    • @mariobruyere9169

@@Juan-xg4kr There is certainly less smog in Valencia. It is one thing to sweat like a hog and quite another to feel gross and grimy. You don't need to go far to feel the difference (e.g., Sitge).

If Madrid was closer to the coast I would consider it, but I've always lived no further thatn 30-80 km from a the ocean and feel very anxious when I'm further away. The good things is that one can always take the train for mini trips to Madrid.
The rent prices you were showing between 1000-3000 EU- were those for Madrid or Valencia, because when I look on Idealista for 2 bedroom places in valencia, it seems you can get something decent in the Ruzaffa area for about 800 Eu and in less popular areas slightly further away but still with a direct metro line connection to the center, for about 600-700 Eu..? In any case everything seems extremely cheap to me as someone who's been living in and near San Francisco for over 20 years where a studio in a safe area costs at least 2000$/month.
I hope I can find some supplemental work in Valencia without needing to know Valenciano(my castillan Spanish knowledge is intgermediate at this point, but I've heard and read some Valenciano and oh boy that's like a differnt language almost). I would not need more than about 15-20 hours of work there to supplement my income and hope to teach private lessons in English or French and/or provide peer mental health support services to immigrants and refugees there...

Another great video, kudos. For me, Madrid gets too cold. However, I wouldn't want to live in a resort city where the weather may be nice but your neighbors are only there part of the year and the rest of the time the place is dead. I lived in Madrid for a couple of years but I was a little kid so it doesn't really count. I've never been to Valencia but I want to retire in Spain soon and Valencia sounds like the momma bear solution - not too big, not too small, just right. I'm also intrigued by Malaga. As long as I have an airport nearby, it's all good.

There is a guy who did a youtube video about living in Malaga and he loved it but eventually left and is living in Istanbul. He was from Ireland I think? Anyway, he loved everything about Malaga but after time felt there was just not that much to do and he was getting bored.
He should have tried Valencia from what it sounds like but if a smaller city like Malaga does not scare you from potential boredom it is fantastic and he and others love(d) living there.
