a tip from a local guy to anyone thinking of moving to valencia: it would be really nice if you consider learning spanish and mix a little bit with us, local people. i am tired of seeing expats who struggle to reply to a friendly "hola!" at our children school gate or in similar situations, and they look for conversation only among themselves. as the video couple say (by the way, what a cute baby you have!!!!), we are very friendly people so it is really sad, annoying and difficult to understand that kind of behaviour here. it drives us to think something like "what the heck is wrong with you?"
People from Valencia are great and people should definitely mingle. Thanks for showing love to our Valencia. 😁 She's growing up quickly but we'll have to bring her soon to see her namesake. - Josh & Kalie
I think nothing personal because these types of people who only like their own communities are everywhere. I think it's even worse when people move to some country and communicate only with someone from their country without even trying to integrate. I think if someone says Hola on the street it is simple respect to say Hola as well, no one asks straightaway to stop and chat.
I agree I am visiting Valencia next June and am already learning Spanish 10 months before going. I would be almost fluent if worked there teaching English for definite out of respect for Spanish culture
I agree! We are looking to at moving to Spain from South Africa and we have the same culture of open and friendly towards others. I cannot wait to get there! Already learning the language! ❤

Why can you understand clearly why the expats voted for Valencia?
We purchased a flat in Valencia 3 years ago and are currently splitting our time between US and Valencia. Hoping to return to Valencia in the spring. The climate is ideal (comparable to San Diego) and the food scene is on fire and very affordable. Not to mention the amazing paella.

* Casa Roberto ( Best Paella Valenciana)
* Restaurant Navarro ( Best Seafood Paella)
* La Riua (Best squid ink rice - charming traditional tavern atmosphere)
- reservations are always a must and it’s also best to order your paella ahead of time.

Rent prices have been going up since Valencia has been elected best city to live in the world for expats, and the arrival of lots of digital nomads, but buying stays affordable. Also, transportation prices are super affordable, 4€ for 10 bus or metro trips, and if you live there, you can get a 24€ annual card to take a Valenbici bike whenever you want in the stations, which are everywhere in the city.
Fallas just ended, and as usual, it was fantastic! But yes, this is noisy (fireworks!!!) all day and night for 10 days.
300 days of sun per year... but the 2 summer months can be really hot, and winters are cold at night, because of humidity!
But people are outside all the time.
Fish is amazing and really cheap.
We have many places which offer subtitled movies.
Also, sport is a big thing here. You can do literally any type of sport.

Hola y ola to my two favorite Iberian educators. 🥰 In retirement class, I told my classmates about Numbeo when looking at cost of living. Ever the number loving nerd, I saw Valencia was listed 5 for quality of living, Porto was 19, and Lisbon was 95. My mountainous sweetie crush Muscat, Oman was 25.
I visited Valencia over Labor Day 2022, to include a ⚽️ game. My 💙 is forever with the Dragoes.
I lived in a small town just west of Valencia called benimament. That was in 1989. It was at the end of the metro line at that time. I really liked it alot. Valencia may be the third largest city but it's much smaller than Barcelona and Madrid. If you want another great place to live try alicante .
OMG that's funny. :D I've lived all my life in Benimàmet... I don't know if you'd recognize the "barrio" right now. A lot of the old countryhouses of the early XXth century have been repurposed as public facilities or demolished to make new buildings. They finally dug the metro line into a proper subway and what it was the railtrack is now a long beautiful park promenade. :)

Hey! Got a few questions about registering as autonomo as an online tutor (I have a PhD in physics/biomterials):
I'm Polish, trying to register in Valenica.
I have already:
NIE (just the number on a paper stamped by the immigration office)
Padron in Valencia
Private health insurance that covers me in Spain with no co-pays
Spanish bank account (with upwards of 12k eur on it)
EU passport/ID card
I read that I have to go to the tax office, fill out a 037 form, and then bring documents from the tax office to register with social security. Then I can register as autonomo.
After have all of the documents I listed above plus the registration as an autonomo, will that be enough to become resident here in Valencia, even before I have acquired any income or clients? Or do I need to show that I have already earned money as an autonomo and show that I have a certain lump sum/regular income from my self-employed work? Not sure what financial situation is expected of me.

Most houses in Europe do not have central heating. It's much more common to see mini-splits nowadays.

Fair enough, we fixed that in our more recent videos. We've started using both and in general local currencies.
Valencia enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate.
- The average annual temperature is 17 ºC with hot summers and mild winters.
- The temperature in Valencia rarely falls below 10 ºC.
- It only rains little, mainly in autumn and early spring
- 300 days of sunshine a year
- The highest relative humidity is measured in October (70.04%). The lowest in June (59.15%).
- September (7.30 days) has the rainiest days per month on average. The least amount of rainy days is measured in July (2.00 days)
I'm thinking about moving to either Valencia or Barcelona for a year long internship. I speak four languages and love being in an international community. Yet since Valencia is much more affordable than they beautiful Barcelona I might chose that. What do you recommend? P.s. I have also lived in Lisbon for 5 months and loved the international vibe of the city. Would love something similar & I'm European so I don't need visas P.s.2. The different prices between Barcelona or València are in the rent of the flats,in València are a little bit cheaper may be,not too much maybe 200 euros month. depend where are located the flat, but the prices of the bills are the same electricity water internet, food are the same.

I live in the US, and I would like to retire to Valencia using a non-lucrative visa. Since I can’t work due to the visa, I would be living off my dividends from my stock market investments, 401k, SS, and my Roth IRA. For the life of me, I can’t find anything clear on what my taxes would be like! (Ie. income tax, local tax..etc) I plan on renting, and not buying. Hi Anca, we're looking into this for you as it's a little out of our scope. Since we don't have any direct connection in Valencia right now, we recommend this article from Expatica that will clear up the buying process www.expatica.com/es/housing/buying/spain-property-103805/ and as far as agencies, they're hit or miss. If you go on Idealista and find properties you like and start getting connected to agents, find ones that you enjoy working with and then have them search for you based on your criteria. It's generally best to try to work with an agent that's your nationality or has lived in your country to understand the culture you're coming from a bit better and allow you to have a better buying experience.

That's for the question, D. B. We're not 100% because we haven't done a deep dive on Spanish taxes especially for SSI. Forgot to mention how small the apartments are in Valencia and how high the unemployment is in Spain.
We could possibly start saying average apartment size, but small is relative to our audience. Employment levels aren't really a thing that we cover as many expats will be moving there with a job or woking independently. Thank you very much for the comment and adding what we didn't state.
Since 30 sq meters to 2000,,, depend the price, unemployment in Spain is very high, Catalonia have less unemployment with the 10% 4 or 5 points less than Spain i think
I’m not an English speaker, which differences are between expat or immigrant?
It’s a thin line. There’s certain overlap. A lot of it has to do with the permanence of the move. Expats are viewed as more temporary and immigrants are more long term but by definition an expat is an immigrant. There’s a lot a connotation of a lifestyle difference, which we understand. Thank you. We don't have the scope to do a Valencia vs Bogota comparison, sorry. We're just not big enough yet. Spain is a pretty nice place to live and depending on your wages, you can live pretty nicely. Judging by your name, you're of Korean decent, right? We have seen and heard of awkward moments with a variety of Asians in Spain.

What would be the difference between Barcelona and Valencia? Which one would be better to live? And why?
Wonderful questions. First, we have to say that it's completely personal preference.
Barcelona is huge. It's a world city. The international culture there is massive. The food scene there is phenomenal.
Valencia is a mid-major city with good local culture but lacking in int'l culture. The food there is much more local, Spanish.
Language is different for sure. Yes, people in Barcelona speak Spanish but the main language is Catalan and they'll probably prefer to speak English with you rather than Castilian Spanish. Valencia has their "own language", but Castilian Spanish is much more common and there is not the same resentment and animosity towards "Madrid" as there is in Barcelona.
We think it's much easier and faster to get around Valencia as far as transportation is concerned. Valencia is cheaper than Barcelona and if you're making the same wage, your money will go further in Valencia.
Valencia is a slower pace of life than Barcelona as well but both still have a good active lifestyle.
Climate and weather is fairly similar because they're not that far from each other.
You'll find a lot more international tourist in Barcelona compared to Valencia, Valencia will have tourists and especially Spanish tourists so you have to be okay beginning viewed as a tourist a lot of times while in Barcelona. Either way, you'll learn the local spots in time.

You can find international restaurants too..but Spanish food is so good that no need to have more 😃International artists in the summer specially, there is a world cinema called Babel with no dubbed films...in the summer there loads of affordable even free events...concerts in the park, cinema in museums etc it’s a great city..I miss Valencia, I live in Uk at the moment
Valencia to me still maintains an authenticity unlike Barcelona. Love Barcelona but it has become too touristy, expensive and you rarely hear Spanish or Catalan being spoken just walking along the streets as I feel as though it’s just inundated with foreigners. If you are looking to be surrounded by more Spaniards then Valencia is a great choice.

OMG that thing that you showed is definitely not a paella. No one from Valencia will eat that thing with rice, peas and sea food and call it paella. That's just for tourist. The real paella is just made with rabbit, chicken, and a few vegetables. Other than that quite accurate.

That's fair, but you know the problem with time stamps from a CZcams side of things? YT rates videos higher based on watch & audience retention so if someone just skips to the exact part they want to hear, watch for 30 seconds and then bounce, it really hurts the creator. We honestly don't know what to do about this. Thanks for your input.

For linguistic acquisition of natives, it has stunted foreign language abilities compared to other European countries who keep content the original language and subtitle instead of dub.
Try having pets around when there's all the noise of their festival! And retired people don't exactly welcome it either.
