I think the voice change is probably a subconscious way of trying to make the other person comfortable. I come from the ghetto and when I go home, I talk that way again because when people don’t, they are accused of changing or showing off or trying to be uppity or whatever. I imagine prison voice is similar.. like a way of saying “it’s the same old me that you remember”

When I came home last year.... even though I had support from my mom and was able to move in with her... it was lonely. For the first 3 or 4 days, I wanted to go back to jail in a way. I had a routine and a support system from all my boys on the block. We ate together, joked around, worked together, exercised etc..., I found myself driving around for hours in a depression. All this and I had a home, money and kids to come home too. I couldn't imagine being released with absolutely nothing awaiting. I do feel empathy for the guys who did their time and aren't getting the resources to succeed. About a week into me being out, I remember telling a family member about how lost I was. He looked at me and said "don't give me that shit, that's just life, suck it up and deal with it". That pulled me out of my own head and been happy ever since.

It's 2021, we are still letting people sexually assaulted and stabbed in cage over drugs. And then even more idiotic, are surprised when they come out and want drugs even more.

And the first week of having him back in bed was hard. For the both of us. For me having someone else in my bed for him having someone else in bed. If I moved at all he would wake up if I made any sound he would wake up. Then finally I was like hey I need to pee and roll over and do whatever. And we have kids. So you either stop getting mad at me for waking you or go back to the couch. Still to this day all these years later. He is still a really light sleeper. And he just started sleeping on his belly a couple years ago.

Joe! I had an idea for a movie about a guy who is stuck in solitary confinement for a day or two without hearing from anyone. He manages to break out because he was lucky enough to be put into the one with the faulty door. But when gets out of it, he finds that he's in a completely empty prison. No prisoners, no guards, nothing. He finds a TV and see's no broadcasts on except for one channel that's looping an emergency message telling everyone to evacuate large populated areas or to lock their doors and stuff.
He later finds out that he's in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. And now he's gotta use all his prison survival skills to survive in this world.
My question for you, Joe, is what kind of prison based skills have you learned that would help you during an end of the world scenario? You'd have to consider things like food, shelter, engineering yourself some tools and making use of various supplies, dealing with other survivors who may not like the fact that you were in prison etc. I think it'd be an interesting discussion. I'm especially interested in the skillsets that some prisoners develop when it comes to repurposing electronics or taking them apart to craft something new. Things that people who have never been locked up wouldn't know how to do.

We had a family friend who was a sailor in the British Merchant Marine from the 1920’s up until WW 2. There was always a grimy/worn spot on the bathroom wall above the toilets in his house. This was from years of steadying himself in the ships heads, he would place a hand on the wall as if the ship was rolling. The poor guy also developed a life long stammer & stutter after the trauma of being torpedoed by a U-Boat in the North Atlantic.

My uncle (RIP Uncle Doug) spent a lot of his life in prison going to ,getting out and going back several times. Everytime he’d get released he talk that way for a while. Him being from Alabama and growing up in the country he still would lose his country accent and develop a more “hood” type accent. He was in Holman Prison when it was the deadliest in the country. My friend from high school is serving a life sentence for murder there now.

I had a real problem with my attitude with the concept of authority. My P.O. and my mom had authority, but If the person at the bank or doctor says "I'm going to have you..." I'd stop and tell them to rephrase that because they had no authority to tell me what to do.
Also: people saying "bitches" loosely, like it was a joke, not understanding how triggering it is and when you'd flip, hearing, "you're not in prison anymore"
Fuck that. People don't say that about any other situation that gives someone PTSD.

@Bret V it's all according, honestly. you have the people you deal with, and the ones you don't even speak to. although, doing business in prison, you can do with just about anyone, because you can't do bad business. if you do bad business, well, you're fucked. someone is going to get you. you can't hide. principle in prison is everything. if i tell you, "Hey, Bret: I'm going to give you a bag of chips" - now, that bag of chips is only 24 cent, but....if I don't give you that bag: then, it's a problem. keep your face as best as you can.
again: it's all according. you just have to know how to read people/talk too. LISTEN more than you speak. (don't even forget that).

I did right at a year for dabbling in my narcotics bag at work. I’m a paramedic, and by the grace of god I recently celebrated my 3rd year in recovery and have been released from my narcotics restriction. Anyway, besides the 4 weeks in admissions, I had the same bunky my entire stay. She is a lifer, and is coming up on her 22nd year this time around. She was given 15 to life when she was 17 for manslaughter. The board granted her parole, and 2 years later she was convicted of first degree murder and has been down since 1999. She is your typical lifer, but like 10 times worse. We seemed to get along just fine, I respected her, and to be honest she scared the shit out of me. We still JPay almost every day, and I send her boxes. She is one of my biggest supporters, and even though our paths crossed the way they did, i wouldn’t change anything if I was given the chance to. Anyway, long story short, I found out the hard way that she absolutely hates the sound of someone cutting their fingernails. If someone, even from a few bunks down, cut their fingernails and she could hear it, your ass better run! I’ve been out for a few years, but I still have ptsd every time I see nail clippers.

He was selling & doing drugs in his high school days & carried over beyond those days. He's been locked up more than once, it wasn't until he met a woman that he finally changed his life around. They got married, had 2 kids & I'm baffled that they divorced. We're not close but I do know she was his everything & when he has his 1st son you could tell he was happy.

The hardest thing I had to overcome was the fear of people. I didn't want to go back because someone said the wrong thing. As you said it is difficult to let someone by with what would have caused a fight inside. Then I was uncomfortable going anywhere that was new to me. I was in a car with my brother and he took a street that led out of town. I was ready to jump out if he did leave town. That would be a violation and get me another year. In the feds a serious violation will get you a year or eighteen months. A guy in the next cell did 12 months on his first time and the 12 and 18 months on violations. When I met him he was doing another 18 months. He would be doing a total of 5 years on a 12 month sentence.
