2022 Hyundai Tucson review - should you buy this or the new Kia Sportage?

  • The 2022 Hyundai Tucson has actually been out for a year, but it's very similar underneath to the all-new Kia Sportage. I've now driven both, so join me for a review of the Tucson with lots of comparisons to the new Kia. And some bad jokes. As usual. Does the Tucson have a bigger boot than the Sportage? Is it comfier? Does it contain more Eagles?

No competition. Tucson any day. Tested both and the Sportage feels rather clumsy. Tucson stands out from all SUV’s in same class.

I've gone for the Tucson think it looks better from the front. Having seen the Sportage interior I'd concede it's more functional and nicer than the Tucson but the Tucson is not too shabby and plenty of tech that competes with more luxury brandsl. Good value for what you get and doesn't feel budget. I would have thought the MPG would be higher where it uses the electric motor a lot for a self charging hybrid.

Either the Kia or Hyundai are a great choice. Hybrid variants of each haven't hit Australia yet, but are coming. So in the Hyundai/Kia cousins , we do with a lethargic 2.0 Gdi FWD 115Kw 192Nm , or the better 1.6 T-Gdi with 132Kw or 265Nm or even better 2.0 Smartstream Diesel with 137Kw & 416Nm linked to a great 8spd Auto Tranny . Diesel NLine Highlander Tucson for me.

For me it was a toss up between this and the Sportage, and although both are very good cars with great tech and (in my opinion) good looks, the one thing that puts me off the Tucson is the ‘square’ wheel arches, I just don’t get them!. So I’ve gone for a Sportage GT Line S Hybrid.

I actually like the engine noise (when you can hear it); don't mind it revvin' a little, but it's only very occasionally. As you said: it's a family SUV and you should use it as one; it's not intended to take it out on the race track, although I might give that a shot one day.

I personally really dislike styling that makes a car not look like a car anymore. I hate the rear lights too, just trying too hard. I'd choose the Kia all day long based on styling alone, even though I'm not that keen on the front lights on that either.
