2021 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid - As good as any German rival ! [Road Test and Review]

  • Hyundai have certainly upped their game in both styling and quality. I've been driving the new Tucson for the last couple of months and have done over 2000 miles. In this video I compare the self charging hybrid ownership experience with the Plug-in Hybrid experience I recently had with the Kia Sorento.
Thanks to Hendy Hyundai of Poole for the car. My best advice if you are interested is to get yourself a test drive.

The lights on adjoining the Grille are the Parametric Daytime Running Lights. The 'auxillary lights' as you call them are actually the headlights. The parametrics dim when the headlights are on.

Having had German cars for the last 25 years,
buying a different brand was a bit daunting. The reason for a change? I’d just got fed up with the arrogance of German manufacturers showroom staff. Having researched and tested many brands and models, I finally went for the Tucson N Line S. So glad I did. I’ve had it for 18 months now and love it!

My wife picked hers up 5 weeks ago and absolutely loves it. She has a creamy interior which is stunning. Also because of the deals it worked out cheaper on the finance to get a brand new car compared to a 2 year old one. She averages around 47mpg which is also a bonus. I agree its not the fastest or a back lane beater but if she wanted that she could of had my Mini Cooper s. Great review keep up the good work.

@@amitkhade01 I got a brand new 21 plate (July 21) hybrid ultimate auto on pcp for £444 at 3.1% apr, no deposit, compared to £448 at 8.9% on a 19 plate 18k miles on. So didn’t go with that original dealership and phoned round and ended up in Blackpool. I couldn’t believe it. Didn’t make sense! Chorley group Hyundi did have awesome offers on at that time and could fault their guys there. So went with the new one… why wouldn’t ya!

Great filming and review, as I've mentioned on other channels I love the Tuscon, it's def not without its niggles, like you mentioned the lane departure one is a major gripe of mine, but on the plus side, the looks are fantastic from every angle, the interior superb, the performance of 0-60 in 7.7secs from a 1.6 engine/elec motor in SUV is impressive and as you say its not going to be in Ferrari territory but I'm averaging 48mpg on m/ways and over 50mpg around town and country lanes, Love it!

We have a N-Line self charging hybrid on order and hope (fingers crossed with a following wind) to get it towards the end on December. Was originally hoping November but the pesky chip shortage may be playing a part. I can’t wait. Test drove the 230 hybrid in the premium or ultimate speck but wanted the N-Line for the looks. Been a VW family for years but I agree that Hyundai are putting some of the more premium manufacturers to shame and the pricing is very very appealing. I was wanting to stay away from the £500+ VED per annum and with a price well below the 40k threshold this is achieved. Styling is right on for me, I love both the front with the headlights and the rear with then seamless rear lights going all the way across.
Great honest review, really enjoyed it.

We have the Ultimate PHEV delivered in 1st week July, just completed 1300 miles, averaging 116mpg. Including a 400 mile trip to Devon. Haven’t put fuel in in over 6weeks. This alone saves us £40 a week in fuel. Yes most journeys are short trips, but that’s why it makes perfect sense. The pure electric range far superior to previous outlander, which almost needed to be plugged in every trip to ensure it had sufficient range. Very impressed so far as our first Hyundai. Agree fully with comments regarding looks and interior would definitely place it in the German finish and trim level. Don’t knock it until you have tried it!

Hi Ped, this video was complimentary to the Kia Sorrento PiH, and a good comparison and explanation of hybrid technologies. Very cool exterior styling, loved the look of the interior, and observed that you looked very relaxed in there “dispatching the miles” 😎 The drive control appears to need a bit of a look at from Hyundai, but otherwise the report was very good all round. Last comment, was the battery fully charged when it was delivered ? 👍😎

Great review, lane departure assist, the first thing I turned off in my BMW 330e MSport, it drove me mad. There is definitely something to be said for re-charge hybrid versus plug ins, I had 3 BMW 320EDs and loved them... Hyundai is certainly coming on as a brand. The cars of the future possibly?

Good review Ped. I do actually quite like the external look of that if i'm honest. It reminds me a bit of the Nissan approach, such as with the Qashqai in a way. Very cost effective and, as you say, bags of kit as standard. I bought a Qashqai years ago and to be fair it was a very practical and capable car. I just died of boredom, so got rid of it for a BMW M135. I couldn't believe the amount of kit that came as standard. Naturally I went for the top spec (as even that was pretty cheap) but it had virtually everything you could want on it for the day. This reminds me of that if i'm honest. I'd never buy one, as i'd sell it out of boredom within a matter of weeks, but I guess for people with zero interest in driving, it makes sense.

I’ve just picked up ‘71 plate Tucson Ultimate top spec. I don’t mind the lane departure warning being on. Don’t know how much acceleration you need ( maybe you don’t have the 230 edition I do) but it’s good enough for me in eco mode. If I put it sport it will fly. It’s not a sports car. It’s just what I want. Metallic black black leather interior everything about the car is great

Great review, I had a 3 day demo in an ultimate hybrid myself, and I totally loved it. I personally loved driving it, and it can be quick enough when you want it to be, but in reality the car encourages you to just drive normally. I could not believe the quality of it, its just so impressive. Personally when the time comes I would go for the n line a spec, and probably the plug in hybrid, but only because its cheaper for company car tax than the normal hybrid. Deffo a car to consider, there that good.

I ordered my Tucson 1.6 Hybrid N-Line S (panoramic Roof) in mid-September and was told today it is expected first week of January - I can't wait.
I was really impressed with the ride and performance on the test drive and managed 45 mpg. Sport mode was noticeably impressive - it flew. But I agree, you are more likely to cruise around in Eco mode on most journeys.
Good points: very quiet and little road noise. Superb quality feel inside. Unique external looks which set it apart from most other SUVs except perhaps the RAV4 which I really didn't like in the flesh.
With very low 3% apr PCP and huge 13% discount, buying a new Tucson makes great financial sense. Some dealers are charging 9% to 12% which makes an enormous difference to the monthly payments. With the maximum deposit of £14,000 from my 2013 Volvo XC60, the Tucson is only costing me £113 per month. shop around.

Interesting review, as a new owner (2 months Ultimate Hybrid), I would agree with you on the points about the lane management (annoying) and lack of a gear lever.
I am not with you on the 'sport' setting which I find really changes the dynamics of the car. I also don't understand some of the comments re it being an EV - it is not it is a hybrid and use its electric drive in a blended manner in operation. Nor is it a diesel but does return a diesel challenging mpg (mine is just under 50 mpg). If I was to rate my previous Ateca at 7.5 then the Tuscon is a 9, based on its performance (do you need more than 230bhp in a family SUV?), economy (43mpg), drive and looks are all better than the Seat. Having owned mercs and audis I would also say that the internal finish is on a par. On top of that is a load of tech which makes it an enjoyable drive

I came from a F30 bmw 4cyl turbo, tuned to about 315hp, and this hyundai is def not a disappointment or a slouch.

Hi Pete I’ve come back to this vid as I’ve had a Hyundai Tucson as a hire car for last 2 weeks. It must be me but technology gets in the way of driving these days, So need to do a tip run , load up rear with some long pieces of timber just too long to fit in without some major seat moving , so no problem leave it sticking out rear by 100mm. Tie down tailgate. Go to move off car won’t release electronic parking brake unless all doors shut and seat belts done up. Grrrrrrr , lol. The parking brake drives me crazy can never just jump in and drive off . The stop start kicks in just as I’m crawling to a junction go to pull away won’t go unless clutch fully depressed , and the regen braking to recharge auxiliary battery slows the car too much.
Thank goodness my old merc ml350 will be back soon. 👍👍👍

I like the general exterior design also, especially as you say the way the headlights blend into the grille. The rear light clusters have a touch of Mustang Mach E about them. But I think having to turn off lane departure assist every time you get in the car would be a deal breaker for me. I can see the point if you do a lot of long journeys on motorways but not for any other time.
By the way, and this is in no way a criticism of you as I know you have no choice in the matter but the amount CZcams ads is getting really bad. I think I counted about 4 or 5 lots just in the first half of the video. Yes you can generally skip but that's just as annoying. They need to reign it in or it's going to cost CZcamsr's views.

I've never considered a Hyundai before - for all the reasons you say in your vid.... drab, plasticky and cheap interior. I test drove the new 2022 Tucson last week - unbelievably good. I loved the look and feel, loved the spec, and for the type of driving I do every day the drive is spot on. Just placed an order for the hybrid in Ultimate spec, and now counting down.... just 20 weeks to go!

i20N or i30N fastback for next time… I hope you get a Kia EV6 GT-line S when they are available, that looks a very interesting EV. The GT version with 582 bhp should be awesome, but that’s not coming until late 2022 I believe. Kia and Hyundai are the manufacturer’s to watch… just look how far they have come in the last 20 years, I can’t think of any other brand with such leaps in design and quality. When I looked at the new Kia Sorento as a Landrover Discovery owner I was blown away by the quality of materials and fit and finish. Only thing I wish is that the phev’s and hev’s had a larger combustion engine like a 2.0 - 2.5 to have more torque and refinement when pushed.

I have just purchased a brand new Lexus 250H (Hybrid) with an EV switch (electric only switch) this is good for about 1 mile of constant electric only drive, however 58% of my driving is in electric only mode according to the onboard computer/APP as the brakes/coasting and petrol engine/battery generator recharges the battery as you drive. Cost £360/month inc VAT with £3000 deposit and a £14300 balloon payment - this was cheaper than a new TUCSON. I am getting 57MPG. Boot is tiny though, the car overall is fantastic. Keep up the videos - love them.

I run the Mitsubishi PHEV outlander.
The 1.6 engine is too small on the Kia,, my last PHEV was 2litre, , it needed a bigger engine. My next one has the 2.5 litre engine, this works great with little difference to mp95
Save 13k and buy the Mitsubishi, it’s got 95% of the gizmos as well, but not the sun roof!

Unfortunately, the "shudder" is still a feature of the 1.6T engine when the engine is under a load (uphill usually) and operating between 2500-3000 rpm. Started doing that suddenly at about 1,000 mi and been to the dealer multiple times with no resolution. Runs fine in EV mode.
