- This is John Mahon's reaction to watching BAND-MAID / FREEDOM (Official Live Video) for the first time.
John Mahon has been in the Elton John band since 1997. He was voted the #3 Percussionist by Modern Drummer Magazine 2010 Readers Poll. John has also performed with Peter White, Al Stewart, Rita Coolidge, Helen Reddy and with Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron.

You could see it in his face, at first he was smiling, thinking "oh, they are cute". And then it changed to "damn, they can play, this is really good music" 🙂

In the interest of accuracy, "Freedom" was written for them by Ichiro Iguchi and the lyrics are by Band-Maid's Miku Kobato. No one else recorded it before them so it's not a cover. They like to play it in concert; they've it played more often than any other song. They played this version with the drum solo on their 2019 U.S. tour a few months before this concert and it was different every night.

The Maid Cafe aesthetic is more than just a gimmick. The underlying ethic is that "service" to the "customer" is **everything**. This informs everything this wonderful band does, and we are lucky to have them.
Well said! There's also just the visual immediate identification. If you see a pic of Band-Maid even from behind where you don't see their faces, you know who it is if you've seen them just once. I can't find the original pic, but the art for "Shambles" is just a classic shot of Miku's back at (IIRC) SummerSonic a few years ago, with extra- muscle-ey drawing to fit the theme of the anime.

Great song selection for John as this song has a very 70's vibe to it and live is always the best way to show off this band. You haven't checked out the ladies performance of Hate live from Lollapalooza or Moratorium live at Zepp Tokyo. Highly suggest both. Cheers!

A thing about the maid outfits, John & Joel: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!

What I love about this song is when Misa drops to duel tones during the last verse. It's subtle but a really nice break in pace.
Good job!. Great selection for a percusssionist. I´ve love remembering Heart. There are countless Band Maid references in relation to the great bands of the second half of the 20th century.

Satistics show that one in four Japanese children start learning either piano or swimming in early childhood.
Girls are more likely to have taken piano lessons, hence the female bands.
Three members band maid - Misa, Akane and Kanami - also have piano experience.
Especially Kanami, who composes music, studied piano for a long time.
Kanami's birthday Sept 28. 12 hours ahead of California.

I hope one day you check out YOYOKA again. She did a cover of 7 Days by Sting (vinnie Colaiuta drummer) recently then played it live at Fantasy Drum Camp and got a standing ovation from those in attendance! Another fantastic Japanese female drummer!
I think the Heart comparison is fair. This is a very "classic rock and roll" sample from a time when their catalog leaned heavily into a 70s-80s classic rock sound.
Loving the songs you've played for John Mahon and desperately hoping he is also introduced to LOVEBITES.
Of course John loves B-M. Half a million subs on their YT channel can't be wrong. And as JFK famously said "Ich bin ein Band-Maider"....probably.😏

'Freedom' was good because he's a drummer, though I think there are other songs wit more impressive drum parts.
I would love to see you react to Senri Kawaguchi, Joel. It seemed to me that John was referring to her (amongst others) here.
This was great to watch! But I'm not surprised John thought it might have been a cover for a moment. To be honest I think that about 50% of Band-Maid songs when I listen to them for the first time. It always feels like something I've heard somewhere before but at the same time I'm pretty sure I haven't because I don't even listen to that much hard rock. It's very curious. It makes me feel welcomed though, as if there is some kind of familiarity.
The Maid concept was developed by Miku (guitar) who worked in a Maid Café and thought it would be cool to integrate that image and some of its customs into a Rock Band. There's actually more to it than just the costumes, it's also part of their shows and general philosophy. Some of it would certainly be seen as quite "problematic" or at least strange to western people but it makes a lot of sense within Japanese culture and these girls are certainly going "their way" ;)
I think it was about 15 years ago that I recorded the song Saishuu Ressha by MUCC and when I later heard Freedom, the chord progression in the chorus reminded me of that song and I wondered if it was a common chord progression in Japanese rock music. I have to say that it is actually quite different from Freedom, but still somehow has that typical Japanese flair. Maybe John had a similar association somewhere in the back of his mind.
Freedom isn't particularly interesting or complex apart from the fact that it has a drum solo. Tasteful as always but I'd recommend him to check out something like Giovanni or Balance.

Maid Cafes started from maid culture which was a branch of cosplay. Cosplay is huge in Japan. Maids have actually been a part of Japanese pop culture for decades.
Maid culture is not a branch of cosplay. It was simply inspired from European maid and butler outfits. It was a marketing strategy to entice customers (generally males) to come to their shops/cafes. It just got big outside of Akiba due to anime/manga influence.
@PsychoSpiral Ummm no. It started in the 1990's along with many other cosplay genres. Then someone got the idea to use it as a theme to entice customers. In the 1990's, you could see them out and about Tokyo on the weekends. There were, and are, shops where you could purchase the costumes.
@ericifune5543 Uhhm no. The maid outfit is inspired mostly from French maids of the early 20th century. Also, costume wearing was imported from the US to Japan in the early 70s to late 80s.
@@PsychoSpiral You describe cosplay. It happened before the development of maid cafes. Maid culture is a part of Japanese pop culture. There still are videos of Saki, of Nemophila, rocking a maid costume prior to the founding of Band-Maid. Hettsu, the bassist of Hanabie wears one in their recent video "Tousou" or "Run Away." Neither has any connection to maid cafes. They wear them because they are part of pop culture. Your thesis that it's only a marketing ploy is incorrect.
@@ericifune5543 The maid café phenomenon must be placed in the context of the 'information-consumer society' (jōhō shōhi shakai) that emerged in Japan in the 1970s. The tumultuous years of economic recovery and social upheaval were over, and consumerism was on the rise (Noi Sawaragi, 'On the battlefield of "superflat:" subculture and art in postwar Japan,' ). So yeah, the info that you incorrectly gave out saying Maid Culture is a part of cosplay. So, you're pulling out shallow examples where you're clearly not understanding the full history. So, please enough of this fake points that you're bringing up. I'm done with this silliness of your thinking.
