Yes, Quite right!! When U think about it, "SoundWave" was a truly unique "Decepticon" based on those afore mentioned characteristics. One of My very first figures, This awesome transformer served multiple functions for "Megatron," & his ability to spy on the "Autobots" whether it be with his "cassetticons" Or going solo, His skills were second to none. So much so, that what he lacked in "charisma," he well made up for with loyalty, strength, appearance, & overall demeanor. 🤗❤️👍🏽

I love how when Optimus Prime dies all of his friends stayed to bid farewell.When Megatron was about to die or still function as he said it,Starscream of tossed him away like trash along with Thundercracker,skywarp and the insectsicons just tossed them away like trash

The only reason i want a KO G1 soundwave its because its the 84 Mold with the original blue color that have been lost with time !!!
I always thought it would have been awesome to have a working radio, Soundwave.
I spent so many hours staring at the back of those G1 boxes, imagining the battle that was happening in the picture.
I always loved Soundwave, partially due to his size and how close to the cartoon he looked. He was often in charge of my Decepticons because I didn't get Megatron till a bit later, on one of those mail away orders.

I had him... got him maybe from a school yard sale. Since I didn't have Megatron he was my leader of my Decepticons.

I never got a soundwave as a child. My grandparents looked everywhere ,my mum and dad tried so hard but there was never any in stock . In the end i got a thrust and brawn instead . I recently got a KO and 38 years later i was so happy probably the best G1 decepticon toy.

Here in the UK, Soundwave was marketed as the Decepticon leader for the first year as Megatron was not released here until 85.
Actually the raised buttons aren't exactly from Soundblaster
They're actually a running change Takara made for the mold once they started selling it in Japan

Soundwave was my first Transformer that I got at Mervyn's department store my mother had to buy two of them because my brother and I didn't like to share toys and funny story my mother then proceeded to peel off the sticker prices off the boxes so that my dad wouldn't flip out knowing what they cost.
Wow! I totally forgot Mervyn's department store! My mom used to shop there too! Maybe that is why I had a tough time finding transformers as a kid. I would always wait in the car while my mom went inside Mervyn's.
I have the Walmart reissue of this one too. It is really great! What a reissue should be.

My favorite moment is what you mentioned in the video. That scene inside Astrotrain when he declared himself a candidate for leadership of the Decepticons and he faced off against the Constructicons. And his tapes came out to back him up. Classic scene from TF:TM.

I think Soundwave has been transformed before! He was a little too lose. But he was still in good condition.
Sorry brother I've missed a couple vids , glad you're back. This was the first or second transformer I got as a kid . My mom got him for me at a true value.
I been told kids scored Transformers at True Value! I didn't know they carried them as a kid.
My Soundwave had the rubsign. I really hated the look of that on his chest, because it didn't show his faction logo unless you rubbed it. I ended up peeling the rubsign off and relocated it to the side of his leg.
In it's place, I trimmed out a Decepticon logo from the catalog and used gluestick to paste it on his chest. It's still there today.
And because I'm in Canada, I got the misprint on the techspecs that reads Autobot for both Soundwave and Buzzsaw. Though I never noticed that until I posted a photo of the box online and someone pointed it out to me.

@@80sTransfromersFan The packaging was printed in Japan where it would have been used for shipments to Canada.
My guess is that they didn't have anyone proof read the text. Not to mention that products sold in Canada must have both official languages on the label, English and French.
Lovely video, thank you. Must admit, he's always been my favourite G1 character, largely owing to Simon Furman's characterisation in the Marvel UK 80s run. Soundwave, to me at least, was reminiscent of Peter Wyngarde's Klytus or Charles Gray's Blofeld; he was eloquent, ruthlessly efficient, silkily sinister, and not without a certain supercilious charm. Sadly, I doubt we will ever see this Soundwave again, as most people tend to prefer the Sunbow version.
Wow, well said. I've never read the UK comics, but I've heard positive things about them for years. I'm going to have to track them down.
Just got my hands on the Walmart exclusive 40th anniversary g1 soundwave reissue in the cartoon colors and as soon as I got the figure i immediately had to watch your video review just to see the figures throughout the years. Gotta say I’ve been having a blast just messing around with this figure.

Been a transformers fan since the 90s as I grew up with beast wars and I still have my transmetal 2 dinobot to this day still intact. And my collection has been ongoing as I’ve got a whole setup from the live action movies to the modern g1 figures and a small selection of g1 retro figures.
It’s a huge collection.

Been wanting a g1 megatron for years but he’s like very difficult to find at a decent price and In good condition.
Just found out something interesting about soundwave’s g1 toy
After messing around with it I found out that you can actually store laserbeak’s guns on the battery compartment while soundwave is in robot mode and that’s due to how short the blasters are and the cutout in the battery cover. Course you have to have it to where the blasters barrels are pointed upwards on his back for that to fit properly. Also gotta make sure the pegs are in the gap as well as that allows it to sink in a little to allow for more room.
You would have to play around with to get It in there but it actually does fit.
Unfortunately ravage’s missiles don’t fit in the compartment as they are much larger.

@@80sTransfromersFan bit of an update with g1 sound wave. Was messing around with ravage’s weapons and it seems like you can actually store them in sound wave’s battery compartment just like laserbeak while in robot mode. It’s just one of those accessories where you have to play around with it a bit till it eventually fits in with the battery cover. It’s all due to the opening underneath the Belt clip that allows you to be able to store the weapons.
Literally had no idea that was even possible till now.

My favorite Soundwave moment is from the tech-specs where it says he can read minds by monitoring electrical impulses... something they never did in the cartoon.
They really played that up in the IDW version. He was what is called an outliner, a Transformer that has abilities that has nothing to do with their alt mode. He was a vagrant that was going crazy because of his ability, but Laserbeak, Buzzsaw and Ravage helped him control it. When he met Megatron, he said his thoughts were so clear and focused that he finally found someone that could truly trust
He actually does it to the Dinobots in the episode War of the Dinobots. I even included a clip.
He also does it to Chip Chase in an episode
The episode he did it in is "Roll for it". I actually had to look that up. It's been awhile since I saw the show

Had him as a kid and he’s back in storage in Australia while I live in Japan. My favourite moment might have been carrying the dying Megatron to Astrotrain in the 86 movie. His final act of loyalty to his commander. About the toy, I was so cheesed they never packaged Laserbeak with him. I assumed they were just forcing us to buy Laserbeak separately.

Great video George I never had soundwave as a kid but I did see it when Another kid was playing with it at school and always wanted it but we just could not get it in the UK where I lived.
Also here’s a story of how your mind plays tricks on you as a child I remember seeing this toy and is it a working fully functional cassette recorder it could record it could playback I can still remember it doing that when in reality it never did.
I only found this out within the last year when I started re-collecting transformers and looked at some videos on CZcams and saw that the toy never did that back in the 80s. I believe there is a MP3 Special edition soundwave out there that does allow you to play music but certainly not back in the 80s.

No doubt best g1 Soundwave review on you tube. I can say that with 100% certainty as this is my favorite transformer of all time. I have a microman , g1 and quite a few reissues but the G1 in still my favourite. I had since a child in the 80s and it survived complete in excellent condition in box at my parents. Him surviving with a mint beak started my extremely large cassette collection (over 150 and growing ) Great review as always man and one very personal to me.
Over 150 ! In my Napa DBZ voice. Wow I thought I had a lot. I would love to own the MC version and I'm always on the lookout for one.

soundwave definately was an early sony walkman (or portable casette player/recorder as they weren't called walkmans before 1979). Hence the clip and the headphones of the orginal.
PS: the original is the best. Way cleaner and the added storage makes the mechanism prone to failure.
Love it. My favorite Transformer, period. You know I have a story about Soundwave myself. Back when he was released I was around 9-10 years old. My parents couldn't afford to buy him for me and I really wanted him. There was one kid in school that got every Transformer as they came out...including this guy. Well, one day at school when everyone was going out for recess I stayed behind because I knew Soundwave was in the kids desk and I took him. Not proud of that but for a few minutes that day I owned Soundwave! Recess was over, the kid realized it was missing, the teacher started grilling.....and I caved. As I got a little older my parents did start buying me Transformers, but not Soundwave as that time had past to get him and he was no longer available on shelves. I never got him until reissues happened....and decades went by. Like you said, every toy has a story ;)
Whoa that's the must honest toy story I have ever heard. And I totally get. I have a few Transformers at school stories and I learned school and Transformers did not mix. So which version of Soundwave reissue do you own now? And thanks for sharing your Transformers story!
@@80sTransfromersFan Yeah, tough story to tell and I didn't grow up to be a cat burglar or anything..lol ;) Learned my lesson right then and there, especially when my parents got word! I just remembered I did end up a few years later with a "Cassette Man" that I found at a flea market but I knew it wasn't a Transformer. Then some time after that my mom did buy me a "Robotic Radio" thinking that was the same. But, I ended up not getting a real Soundwave until the TRU version with the two cassette chest. Even that wasn't right to me of course. Now I have the Walmart reissue which is I guess as close as I will get to owning a brand new Soundwave in his original form (even though that one is different too..buttons, the hinges on the door, etc). But, hey, I got some form of him now at least ;)

And those of us that still carry those memories and the love from our childhood could never be anything but a outstanding individuals. BTW that Toys R Us reissue is my favorite Soundwave! I lent my Snarl out to a kid for a few minutes (he was brand new and I was so proud I wanted to show him off since most of the time I was borrowing other kids' toys) and I got it back with the tail all loose and broken. I complained to a teacher or some other adult and they were like, "Well that's what happens when you lend out your toys." That's when I learned--at the ripe old age of 6--that sharing is for suckers and you can never expect an authority figure to have your back.

I think the voice effect used on his voice is a flanger or phaser or something. I'm pretty sure I got Soundwave used at Goodwill and not new, and had NO IDEA that the back opened up until right now. There must've not been anything in there so I just never suspected that compartment slid out. Also as a kid, the tape spool sticker in the middle used to make me think of two gas giant planets close together... I don't know why. I was a weird kid.

One of my favorites. I found my original in Hong Kong (while visiting family) back in the day, on a random chance encounter. My dad and I were walking in downtown and I insisted on visiting this store (I saw stacks of G1s!) And lo and behold, Soundwave. I got him. My little story of how I got my G1 Soundwave......and still have him in a great condition. If I could go back in time, I would like to revisit and get some others (and of course get a bigger suitcase.......and more money! :D )
Wow very cool toy/Soundwave story! The only original toy from my childhood I still have is my set of Constructicons. And we could all use a DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor 😂

I think a modern adaptation of G1 Soundwave would have him transform into a cybertronian computer terminal and some sort of armored vehicle.
I have the takara collection reissue of soundwave with laserbeak in this nice anime box.
Another 40 minute review that felt like it was only 10 or so because of how jam packed with information it is, I learned a lot from this and I have my official reissue sat on my desk here at home while I work and I can't tell you how many calls I've almost missed because I've been ejecting Buzzsaw over and over again, I always wanted this as a kid but I was a little too young so I missed it first time around and couldn't find it anywhere here in the UK, none of my friends had one either. Easily one of my favourite characters, my daughter broke the cassette tray this past weekend, I think I just about fixed it but I've retired it from play now, at least for the kids, but I'd rather it got broke being played with than collect dust before its time so no regrets, it wasn't a real vintage figure so it doesn't hurt too bad. Keep up the EXCELENT work friend.

@@80sTransfromersFan As a kid, I always wanted the "real" Soundwave, and never got him. I even put a rub sign on my CassetteMan. But I did appreciate the fully functioning and powerful spring loaded missile launchers the KO's had. As an adult, I appreciate all the oddball and rare stuff I somehow still own many many years later.

@@80sTransfromersFan Wow, another funky colored Soundwave. On one hand not sure if that one does it for me. Plus I'm mostly an MISB collector and you can't see the figure without opening the box. Also wish they included the weapons/batteries. But on the other hand, G1 molds are the only TFs I'm collecting nowadays. And I like limited, strange, and odd stuff. I'll have to think about it.
I just reallized, the artwork has red/rumble in his chest. Even though the pictures show buzzsaw.
The micro change version came with red Rumble and that's the origin of the artwork.

I love Soundwave! I have so many in my collection. I have to say my favorites in my collection are The Platinum Edition "Year of the Goat" Exclusive Masterpiece Soundwave by Hasbro and my Linkin Park edition Soundwave. Do you have a favorite Soundwave version?
My favorite is actually the Toys R Us G1 reissue that holds two cassettes because as kid I dreamed of Soundwave ejecting multiple cassettes like in the cartoon. Even though Takara Soundblaster was first to hold two tapes but it wasn't in his original colors.

I loved Soundwave from day 1. I always wanted him as a kid and all the way until now. I never got him until the Walmart reissue came out and now I have him. I also got the Walmart cassettes. I also never knew about most of the reissues until I got back into collecting. If I ever found an 84 in good condition, at a good price, I'd most likely pick him up. I love all your reviews of the 84 lineup and sad it's coming to an end soon with Megatron. Do you think you'll do the 85 lineup next?

My favorite Transformers toy as a kid . Just bought a vintage one again . Curious what is your view of stickers? Do you care if some are missing or not? Do you go the repro route with stickers? I bought Soundwave but he is just missing the two “speaker stickers” . Wondering if I should care about that. Lol thanks great channel.
Always do what makes you happy! I once was a vintage stickers only guy. But reprolables\ toyhax have come a long way and I have used them to bring my beloved toys back to life. But I only replace the stickers that are really bad. So if a couple of the stickers on my figure are still good I'll leave them on take off the few really bad ones. That way it keeps some of the originals.
Fantastic review as always George. I remember you mentioned before in a previous review about the piece on the shoulder being a microphone for the cassette mode. I didn't know that back then but now I know! Did you ever pick up any of the oversized KO Soundwave toys?
No I didn't I was on the fence for a long time on that oversized Soundwave. But never pulled the trigger because the cassettes weren't very good in my opinion. But the oin with the electronics was very tempting. Did you pick up one?
@@80sTransfromersFan No I didn't pick one up either. I had only seen footage of them and thought they looked cool.
I think the reason Buzzsaw didn't get any cartoon attention is because he came packaged with Soundwave, so there was no point advertising his toy. Laserbeak and Ravage stole the spotlight because they came separately.

There was another brand of transformer-like toys that were made all out of metal. I rarely saw them as a kid and they seemed to be imported from Japan or something. They felt super high quality. Do you know what I’m talking about? I always wished I had them as a kid but could never get them.

Either the Movie scene that You mentioned, Or the TV. scene when "Megatron" sent him to find out what the "DinoBots" weaknesses might be!!!! Anyway, In spite of having had several vintage ones stolen, & losing an entire G1 Collection I once had packed in a large box with japanese writing on it, I'm STILL a serious collector, with "Transformers" throughout My place in battle-scenes!!!! (Till All Are One!!!! 🤖🦿🦾👽🖖🏽
