    Im so happy to hear this. My tears are tears of joy, now. So Billy is a boy, after all. Unless there's a Billy boy and a Billy girl. But this is the first news to give me hope, and I thank you so much. You keep getting better, Billy! I love you, sweet boy! I hope to hear soon that you've been able to go home, or maybe that you can go to Katrina at Koala Gardens where you can join the colony there. You would remain wild and free, but you would also be safe and protected, and there are no fires there. You keep getting better, my sweet grey angel. Much love, hugs and kisses from America🇺🇸😗😗😗😗💖💖💖🐨🐨

    I'm still yet to find out why Port Mac K Hosp put 'Ellenborough Lewis' to sleep - claiming that he wouldn't have recovered from his burns after only a week. I reckon if he survived the first week, he'd survive even if he needed further (intensive) care for many weeks - I'm sure someone would have volunteered to look after him. Even if he ended up being classed as a ground koala through lack of claws or whatever.
    Can anyone find out ?

    • @TheKoalaChannel
      @TheKoalaChannel  Před 4 lety

      There are many complications we are finding with post-fire koalas. Wound infection, smoke inhalation related pneumonia and stress related organ failures to name a few. Koalas can go from seemingly healthy to mortally ill in just a single day. We're not affiliated with PMKH, but I'm sure they did everything they could. Sometimes it is a mystery as we volunteer groups cannot afford autopsies on all the poor souls that have been lost.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb Před 4 lety +1

      @@TheKoalaChannel Wound infection - (topical) antibiotics.
      Smoke inhalation is probably the most difficult to deal with.
      Stress could be dealt with with meds & tlc - but I guess generally isn't. It's just a matter of providing the basic needs of an animal.

    • @richardschullo2339
      @richardschullo2339 Před 4 lety +1

      I don't know the circumstances surrounding Lewis, however, burns are so dreadfully painful. It may have been too much for the little one to endure. I hope his final moments were with gentle, caring people to comfort him.
      It's heartbreaking that these small creatures have to endure loss of habitat through logging too. Is there a search and rescue after a logging horror? How much more do they have to endure? It''s one cruel tragedy after another for these little ones. Koalas and other iconic Australian animals are loved the world over. God bless all caring rescuers, medical workers and volunteer caretakers.

    • @richardschullo2339
      @richardschullo2339 Před 4 lety

      @@millomweb Agreed. Never underestimate the power of tender loving care and prayers.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb Před 4 lety +1

      @@richardschullo2339 Euthanasia means 'gentle execution' so that should be the case. I believe the decision was made a week or so after he was taken in to the hospital. I believe he was stable, eating and 'healthy' apart from the burns. They claimed without going into detail that 'he would not have recovered from his burns' - but what standard of recovered did they mean ? He may not have been suitable for returning to the wild but he could have had a satisfactory life being cared for - either in a zoo - or even by the woman who rescued him in the first place.
      I don't know what's gone wrong re the recent logging incident. It would appear many laws have been broken - and I've heard a public inquiry + criminal proceedings are to take place. The land owner, the logging company (manager/owners) and the people on the ground should all face jail.

    With the pain relief, how do you know when to stop the pain medication? As koalas cant speak and let you know if they are in pain

    • @TheKoalaChannel
      @TheKoalaChannel  Před 3 lety

      Great question. Koalas have a very high tolerance for pain, so it can be difficult to tell sometimes. It's important to note, the types of pain relief used are fairly mild and absolutely harmless, so there's no issues with over-administering. But there are a few signs. Loss of appetite is the most obvious sign, so when a koala is in care we monitor their leaf consumption and weigh them regularly (even daily) to tell accurately how much they are eating. Secondly, their demeanour becomes withdrawn and depressed when the pain is long-term. This takes a bit more experience to be able to tell, especially if you don't know the particular koala well. Finally, comparing what we would be experiencing with similar injuries. In the case of Billy here, we changed his bandages regularly so could see how his injuries were progressing. ❤️🐨❤️ KR

    • @werock9
      @werock9 Před 3 lety

      @@TheKoalaChannel thanks for the reply and additional information.
      I'm not concerned about the mildness of the pain medication, I honestly feel like they need something stronger , especially if they are car hit victims. I remember falling on ice and thought I broke my ribs from the pain I had but the doctor said it was only a sore muscle, I was like WHAT ??!! Only a sore muscle????!!! And that kind of pain so I can only imagine for koalas recovering from soft tissue damage.
