REGARDING THE SPRING:
I found the spring at my local small engine repair shop. There have been some OEM parts that were discontinued and replaced with new numbers. I believe the new part number is Briggs and Stratton #691845. The online diagrams usually have it as number #209.

8 years later and still a great video! Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
Happy to have helped. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for doing this video. I took pictures of the top linkage but didn't take any of the bottom and had no idea of how to hook them back up. Your video showed me exactly what I needed to know.
I usually take pictures as I disassemble things. I didn't realize that I would be disassembling the entire carburetor and had no picks. You saved me countless frustration with this video. Thanks!
I have had to go back and watch my own videos to remember things. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely perfect. Thank you for taking the time to do a professional and well thought out production. EXACTLY what I needed.
Bob Lewis Thank you for watching! Hope your engine runs well!

This video was so incredibly helpful. I was completely lost...now my new carb is installed and wood splitter runs great.
Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
I love working on these little motors, a buddy of mine recently got one on a tiller out of a storage facility, from what i can tell it looks pretty good but im gonna give it the full treatment and get it running good, awesome video man, there is always something new to learn.
Great project! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for the excellent video! The close ups were very helpful and your explanation was clear and detailed. I should have taken pictures before I took mine all apart. By the time my replacement carburetor got to me, the linkage connections became a huge problem. But wait CZcams may have some smart guy who for some reason is willing to spend his time to help others with this issue. Now working thanks to you! Sears tiller with similar engine. You have helped thousands and thousands of people. THANK YOU!
And thank you for watching!

thank you!!!! i picked up a free roto-tiller, and the previous owner had butchered it. original linkages were still there but all the springs were disconnected, and a "custom" linkage had been made from a coat hanger to bypass the governor and connect the carb directly to the throttle setting..... surprisingly it didn't work! lol this video was exactly what i needed to see where everything was supposed to go. much appreciated!!!
Congrats on the free tiller. Maybe that's why it was free! Thanks for watching - always happy to help!
Great video! I have a motor just like it on a craftsman tiller. I took pictures but still needed a little info to get back together. Thanks to smart people like you, helps so many.
Thanks for watching!
I have this motor on my chipper/shredder machine. I now Know where the governor spring needs to be hooked up. This is an excellent video that is easily understood and learnt from. Thank you so much for uploading it.
Thanks for watching. Always happy to help!
Thank you very much for the video! The last time I came across having to tackle this issue was a few years ago. Then I was able to figure it out and get it working just fine. But this time..... I can only guess its me getting older and my brain not functioning like it once did, but I could not for the life of me figure it out and get it working right. Thankfully your video not only helped me get it situated and running, but also prevented my old brain from short circuiting and causing any more loss of function for the day. First beer I crack open will be in your honor
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
Really good video. Got confused with the governor linkage. You saved the day.
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!
Me too.
Perfect video for this task. Just what I needed after tearing the carburetor of. I figured there had to be someone who figured this out. Thank you.
Kyle Haley You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
I have just tested the engine under load and now it's running perfectly, the linkages were causing me problems I followed your instructions they were very clear and easy to follow, again thank you very much keep up the good work, Cheers.
+philip blick Hooray! Thanks again!
OMG! THANK YOU so much! I have been fighting with a motor someone brought me in parts. I was about ready to send it back to them and tell them to find someone else to put it back together. Thank you!
Happy to help!
Thank you. I could not remember where all the two links to the governor went, and your video cleared it all up. Relly appreciate your work in making a highly insructuional video. My 5hp is identical, right down to the decal on the throttle and choke lever assembly.
Thanks for watching, glad you got it back together!
You saved my bacon with your video. I bought the same exact motor on a Craftsman tiller and it was not all there. When I disassembled the carb and all the linkage, I was lost when it came time to reassemble. The thing runs perfectly now. Thanks!
That's why I do it! Thanks for watching!😃
Awesome, one of few Best videos that explains everything in details. Great job!
Thank you for watching! Thanks for the kind comments.
Thank you for making video, big help for me to put back my push blower.
thank you very much. your video answered my question in minutes after searching for hours on the web with no resolve only getting the run around as we older folks say. Thanks again very much
Sincerely
Ralph
+Ralph Meachum Happy to help and thanks for watching!
So very helpful! Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this instructive video.
Thanks for watching!
Wish I had seen this before tacking the job this morning. It was a struggle but the machine is running just fine.
Thanks for watching!
...your video just saved my butt......I just finished installing a carb kit in a 5 hp B&S on an old log splitter I inherited from
my dad.....even though I took a lot of pics during disassembly, I have had a lot of trouble reassembling the linkage (simple carb-
but darn confusing linkage)......your video has put my mind to ease, so now I have the confidence to do it right....thanks so much... :)
Happy to help!
Very good presentation! I've worked on Small Emgines for years, and even so you still run up against some new issue. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! Had a older chipper that replaced the carb on, this got it going again. Thanks again!
Happy to help!
Dude...great video.. No nonsense instructions that gave me exactly what i needed. I linked the spring on the governor wrong and this will fix it. My son thanks you, now I can get his Go Kart up and runnin'. Later
This is the most useful video as I was but confused about the actual working of Pulse Carb of my B.S. 5hp engine fitted on Eurosystems Euro 5 rototiller which I restored recently here in India.
Thanks sblg43 👍
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the vid! I'm hoping I can get mine running again.
Yeah fella, greatly appreciated ! In one day I completely forgot how I took it apart ! Thanks !
Happy to help! Thanks for watching. I sometimes have to watch my own videos because I forgot something!
Thank you !! Very nicely done !!! I spent most of the day yesterday trying to figure out this linkage due to not knowing where that "control cable" bell crank mounted to the carburetor. This should make it all work !! Thanks again !!!
Thanks for watching!
Wow thanks for the video I'm lost when it comes to linkage thanks again.
Linkage is often the most intimidating of small engine repair - you are not alone! Thanks for watching.
THANX!!!! I am down here in Mexico helping out a friend. It has been sooooo long since i put one of these together I had probs with the linkage. I grew up in Iowa, and in out family group you had to know how to fix everything. You saved meh arse..:) Pax et Lux..Ack
Happy to help and thanks for watching!
well done! Saved my bacon due the sudden fog that rolled in as I disassembled and made the parts look like something out of Roswell. Thanks!
Happy to help. Have fun with that Go Kart!
Thanks for sharing that information. I’m replacing a carb on a 5hp bxs wood splitter and didn’t take pictures. My memory at 72 yrs. is not what it used to be. This will help me get to the finish line.

Thanks! Cleared me up on my tiller carburetor linkage.
Glad it helped!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Well done , plainly shown and explained
Thank you
Excellent video, sir. Very helpful and many thanks to you.
Jay Motensen Thanks for watching!
The throttle cable does control the speed of the carb. However, in addition to the throttle control, the governor is also able to make adjustments to the speed when placed under load. See my governor adjustment video.
Thanks for a good tutorial on this engine. I'd still be fumbling around with the linkage without this help.
Thank you for watching! Happy to help!
you just saved me from a lot of trouble. Thanks to people like you who show us how its done. MANY thanks

Thanks for watching!
Happy to help.
Thank you very much. I have that motor with that kind of control plate. I've been at a stand still because I wasn't sure if I had to get a different carb than the new one that I had bought. I'm going to try it again now.
Thanks for watching.
@@RealManSkills by the way, I borrowed this craftsman tiller from my neighbor. I should know better. Anyhow, I'm thinking Disney Land if I get this thing fixed. I mean when.
Great explanation dude thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Donyboy73 says the way to avoid rust in the tank is to store it for the winter with a full tank and add stabilizer. I plan to try it. I might add that ethanol free gas would be the way to go. Your method of attaching the bottom support of the tank first, then the governor spring looks a lot easier than the way I was doing it as the spring kept coming off.
Thanks for watching. I like Donyboy73.
excellent video many thanks - I have been struggling to rebuild a similar engine that has been fire damaged. My local Briggs and Stratton dealer couldn't help!

Great video, thank you!!!!!

Just aquired a generator that has this engine fitted, it wont respond to a load but watching your video i can see that it has a few parts missing! this will enable me to get it running properly!
Thanks for watching. Hope you get it running!
thanks for the reference for people like me who took their carb linkage apart and forgot how it went...
I have had to watch my own videos at times to remember these things as well! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much
Thanks so much this was a great help!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching.
I don't know what kind of a machine you have but I can tell you this: the ignition coil has a wire coming off of it. When that wire gets grounded to the engine, the engine dies. That is how you stop the engine. The toggle you mentioned, sounds like it would be a kill switch. If that is the case, and you use it as such, the other wire just might be optional. You may be able to leave it alone as long as everything else functions properly.
Thanks. Very helpful !!
Thanks for watching!
I have a old jd rear tine tiller with a 5 horse briggs on it, could not get it started.Watch video,on the linkage, runs fine. thanks a lot.Keep up the great work.

@@RealManSkills I'm having a hard time figuring out where the black wire that you used to hold the linkage up attaches. It's at 4:25. Can you help a brother out with that?
I'm pretty sure it's a kill switch wire.
@@keithbrookshire It is the kill switch wire. That wire starts at the ignition coil and goes to wherever the kill switch is on the machine (handle bar, etc...)
@@RealManSkills Thank you so much!
Righton good information thanks

Bonsoir très bonne vidéo explicative merci . J étais coincé dans le remontage du carburateur et réservoir
Merci d'avoir regardé! Heureux de pouvoir vous aider!
thank you for this video i have the same one in for a repair
Thanks for watching!
Great vid, was wondering what the part # is for the carburetor? Thanks
Great video. I have a left over heat shield after reassembly :-( It is BS part no 690440, it has two 45 deg bends and a notch to clear something. Feelin' stupid in MI
Great video. Thank you so much! Governor adjustment has it running now (I actually tilled some with it yesterday) but I can tell it's running a little slow at full throttle. Seems like it's at 70% rev.. almost to much governor now. I know it should be at 3600 rpm but I don't have a tach to tell exactly. I'm wondering if I should replace the governor spring or attempt another very small governor adjustment. Is there a high speed adjustment on a 130212?
I just thought of a good idea. Buy a small set of marking pens. Now. Each time you disassemble small parts, you can mark them separately. If you remove say, a small control rod, from an adjoining piece, you can mark them with the same color. If the other end connects to something else, you can mark that connection a different color. This way everything gets put back the same way.
Have you ever tried to mark a greasy piece of linkage. 😮
@@stomper2582 always a jack-ass. spray it with brake clean.
