    I have run in every Wildhorse. Many of the them I have had multiple pairs. My WH 1 ripped apart at the seems very early but was comfy. The WH 2 had an upper that was invincible (still have a pair for cutting the lawn). Both WH 1/2 were 4mm drops with pretty low stack heights--essentially the Kiger with a rock plate. Hoka had not yet changed the trail shoe market (and many runners' feet)!! I felt like the WH hit its prime with the WH 3 (I had 5 pairs). It took a step back with the 4 (stirrup over top and upper eyelets did not work for me). It took a step forward with the 5 (which I had 4 pairs of). Then the WH got a bit strange with the 6/7--though I have had 3 pairs of the 7. It is very comfortable on my foot, and I love the React foam, but it is a bit back heavy and suffers from Nike's notoriously bad outsole compound. Note, I race 50k-100m in the WH but race shorter trail races in the Kiger or other brands. I am excited to run in the WH 8. I do wish they could get the weight down an ounce though.

      You couldn't have described the WH lineage any better! Yeah the WH8 is definitely a little chunky, but the new Kiger 9 should be closer to the first and 2nd generation Wildhorse. We just got the Kiger 9 in for review, so hopefully in the next month we have a review video with some comparisons.

    Great review! I loved the Wildhorse 7, but, generally, most top-tier Nike trail and road running shoes fit my feet very well. I run in the US Southeast so damp, slippery trails are the norm. The Wildhorse 7s handle drier trails well. They are also great road-to-trail shoes and I've used them backpacking on rugged terrain. But when running in or after rain, I always wear my Hoka Speedgoat 4s. I slipped on a gentle but damp downhill trail last year and messed up my shoulder which required surgery. I know I could have slipped in my Speedgoats, but maybe not as hard. I plan to buy the Wildhorse 8 when they go on sale.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 24 dny +1

      Thanks for watching! This Wildhorse definitely still remains a great road to trail quality, but this new outsole got a lot better. It's a new rubber compound, that definitely provides a bit more stick. Whether it's on par to the Vibram outsole of the Speedgoat is definitely up for debate!

    Hi guys, great review! I picked up this shoe on launch day in the UK and ran 25 miles in terrible wet conditions - I loved it. The cushioning is so comfortable over technical ground, and you feel so low to the ground. One big positive is that the tread pattern doesn't accumulate huge amounts of dirt and falls off very well, which has been a massive problem in the past.

    I just picked up a pair as a backup if the Zegama V2’s arent ready for a May ultra.
    I did one 5km get-to-know before doing a half marathon around the Roaches, Peak District.
    We had rain, hail, mud, slippery rocks/tree roots and the best sum-up i have is I simply forgot they were there.
    For british winter weather trails they don’t feel as heavy as some reviews suggest.
    I lost grip in areas that I’d argue everything but my Salomon wildcross’s would fail at too.
    I think the most positive thing I noticed was how quickly they drained, very much appreciated as they were wet from minute 1 to hour 4. 😂
    I’m fairly new to the channel but really enjoying the content.

      Great to hear they're working out for you! That simple and thin upper definitely has its benefits with drainage. I'm excited to see where the Wildhorse and Kiger line of shoes go from here, as it really does feel like Nike has upped their outsole quality quite a bit.

    Started with the WH1 and then 2 which I ran the Otter in. Switched to the TK3 and even bought a 2nd pair. Eventually got the TK5 later but it was a shell of its former self. Ran a technical 20k race with around 1500m of vert and I was all over the place on the downhills like I couldn't run them.
    Really hoping the new TK is a return to form, looking forward to a review after the positive one here on the WH!🎉

    Gotta go Wildhorse over Zegama every time (also Wildhorse over Kiger).
    I've been a big fan of the Wildhorse since the 3. 4 and 5 felt great but the strap over the forefoot was unnecessary, then had sizing issues with the 6. Half size up in the 7s and were back on track. It's my go-anywhere go-to shoe. Agree with you, Brett, that the application of the React foam in a trail shoe is on the money. Pumped to play in the 8s when the mountains thaw out!

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před rokem +3

      The Mafate is a little softer, higher stack height, and has a wider base. The Vibram outsole of the Mafate is going to get the edge for me in wet or snowy conditions, but the wildhorse outsole is pretty close! So the biggest difference maker is going to be whether you prefer to be a little lower to the ground (Wildhorse), or even more cushion and a bit less ground feel (Mafate).

    So this is like the 3rd or 5th podcast where you brought up the Saucony Edge. Love that shoe, but it gets a bit unstable for me on cambered trail. Are you reviewing it? Do you like it? I think it's time for a long CP convo about it - I think an extended CP on all the plated trail shoes (good/ugly/bad) would be great too: Ultrafly, Edge, Tecton, SCTrail(NB), and maybe even the new ASICS FujiSpeed2? Just a thought. Keep on doing this! Great job...

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 9 měsíci +1

      We're not planning to review the Endorphin Edge, but we will review the Edge 2 when that comes out, which I don't think is too far away. We're putting miles on the SC Trail right now, so perhaps a plated shoe roundup episode isn't too far away. I am also inclined to not do that episode (yet) because I honestly haven't loved many of these first generation carbon trail shoes. Next year though, I think that conversation has the potential to get a lot more interesting.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 2 měsíci +1

      So much of what I recommend should come down to your personal fit preferences, as well as the type of terrain you train on, as well as are planning to race on. There are many shoes that provide more protection than the Sense Ride, and this Wildhorse is one of them. The Nike Zegama takes that even a step further. Depending on the technicality of the trails you run, there are many other options I could point you towards as well 👍

    How is the toebox in the 8? I have the 7, and a few times on trail descend my toes jammed the front of the shoe. Does this happen in the 8? Also I like the gator in the 7... keeps the small pebbles out.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 11 měsíci

      The toebox feels more spacious than the 7. Bit more volume and doesn't taper down as much towards the toe. The Gator is gone for the 8, which for me, helped with the fit, but you do lose the bit of fabric keeping some debris coming in.

      @@ConversationalPace UPDATE: WOW on that Wildhorse foam……sheesh. Just blew thru a 5 mile run like it was nothing. I might have to size down a half a size though, and I am not digging the laces. • @tommilam6320
      @tommilam6320 Před rokem +1

      UPDATE: The foam is amazing, but that is about it. I don't want to bash Nike, I know they are trying but there are some critical things wrong with this shoe. As mentioned, the laces, too stretchy, and due to how slick the material is they don't seem to want to stay locked down. This is also due to the channels that the laces go through. As you tighten up, the bottom part will loosen if you let go for a moment. I had to switch laces, but they still would slide even then. I had to pull super tight today on the laces coming down Green Mountain in Boulder to get even a remote feeling of control. The magic of the foam - its density is also its downfall. With the upper being mostly that stretchy mesh, I found myself sliding to the sidewalls during decent on technical terrain as the foam wouldn't give that much so the force was placed on the upper, which is way too roomy for me plus it stretches even further when your foot pushes against it. I'm probably not describing this very well, but it was just plain bad for any sections with rock. Log Stairs, and rock stairs were fine, and the buff trail downhill was a lot of fun, but any uneven or unpredictable rock gardens just weren't working in this shoe. Some other areas, they might work ok in more buff terrain, that isn't as steep....just don't think they are as versatile as Nike maybe suggest. I've already gone down a 1/2 size now to a 10, and thought that would have helped but I think my foot shape is not made for this shoe. Thanks again though for your review, you both do a fantastic job talking through everything....and if these work for you, that's awesome. Hopefully, most won't have the experience I had as I really want Nike to keep trying as they do a lot right, just needs some more tweaking IMO. Cheers!

    Great review thanks! The Wildhorse 8 is already discounted to around 90€ in my country so definitely one of the best deals.
    Love the mafate 4 underfoot feel but I’m rolling my ankles in it constantly this could be the replacement.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před rokem +1

      It's hard to create a super stable shoe with a high stack like the Mafate. Wildhorse 8, being a bit lower to the ground should add some stability and create greater control under foot. Thanks for watching!

    What shoe would you be wearing for Western States (American River Canyon training)?
    Preferably from Nike, Salomon, or The North Face.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před rokem +1

      If I were running Western States and we're most specifically talking about the canyons section, my top choice of the three brands would probably the the Nike Zegama. I was fortunate enough to wear the Nike Ultrafly from miles 30-100 last year, and I concluded I wasn't moving fast enough for that shoe to perform well. From Salomon, my top pick would be the Pulsar Trail Pro 2, although I seem to be the only one that really loves that shoe. haha. From North Face, I haven't gotten to try any of their newest shoes, but since they launched the Vectiv line, it's been the Enduris that was my favorite.

    Any the Nike shoes you would do a ultra in ?

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 10 měsíci

      I would definitely run a mountainous ultra in this Nike Wildhorse. With firmer, more runnable trail, I'd use the Nike Zegama, and I did my last 50 mile race in the Nike Kiger 9!

  • @03bruisercat

    I have now run in the WH 8. The outsole has better mud traction but the rubber compound doesn't seem that much better. The midsole is great (but heavy). Enjoy the ride under foot. The upper is super comfortable BUT (and this a disagreement with your review) if you run on SUPER technical trails or off trail scrambles (especially sections that are off camber), the upper has too little structure to keep you on platform. I tend to do that a lot more than most, so I am disappointed. If they added flywire to lock the foot down and reduced the heal to a 6 mil offset to reduce weight, it might be the perfect shoe for me.

    • @ConversationalPace
      @ConversationalPace  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for your feedback! Your comment on the lack of structure on the upper is something I have heard a few times now. seems to work for mild to moderately technical terrain, but not off trail trail scrambles or terrain of that nature. I'm not sure Nike really has a shoe in their lineup to handle something like that. It would be cool to see a few upper options on this Wildhorse, because the midsole foam (albeit heavy), is pretty versatile
