Terra Kiger 5 was possibly the best for longevity out of all my shoes since retiring it many years ago. I laced it up for a wet and muddy marathon over some steep hills in the South-West and was laughed at by other runners. I took it for a weekend to a very wet Lake District and again was laughed at by a hiking group. It was responsible for some of my most adventurous and exciting trail running ever. I was still putting it on after the upper started to seperate from the midsole. I eventually bought the Salomon Wildcross and immediately noticed the difference in grip when running up and down hills in the mud but the narrow toebox didn’t offer much confidence and the upper fell apart after a couple runs. I tried to squeeze out a bit more from the TK after listening to reviews about the subsequent versions and instead bought the Merrell Skyfire, Adidas Terrex 225, and Altra Lone Peak 6. Unfortunately, none of them could make me feel the same way as when running in the TK. I now appreciate having grip in muddy conditions but also a wide toebox. Is it about time to try this version of the TK or the Wildhorse?
In my opinion, this Kiger 9 has provided the best grip of any Kiger I've worn. In terms of fit and feel, Kiger 9 is more similar to Kiger 5 and 6 than 7 and 8 because the 7 and 8 had a forefoot air unit, whereas 5 and 6 did not. Kiger 9 also doesn't have a forefoot air unit.
I'm a massive Kiger 5 fan, but the rubber compound was not great. I did 2400 km over 2 pairs of them.
Kiger 7/8 was an OK shoe, but wobbly and lacking ground feel due to the forefoot airbag.
100% you should get the Kiger 9s. They remind me of the 5s, but with much better grip, nicer toebox height, a bit cushion. They still have good ground feel, agilty, and natural feel and flex. They rely on the runner using their ankle and not the rocker for transition which is important to me. Will be buying more pairs.

Thanks for the review. I bought my Kiger 9s almost 2 months ago now. I'm new to trail shoes, but am really liking them. My insoles seem to be glued in, though. I'm in Japan, if that makes any difference.
Getting them in Japan could make a difference. I'm not sure if all the Kigers in the world are made out of one factory or different locations. Hopefully all the Kigers from here on out have glued down insoles and ours were just an early version or something. Thanks for watching!

For me where the Kiger 9 differentiates itself from the Zegama, Wildhorse, etc is that it has a natural flexible ride, compared with a rockered high stack ride.
Only minor thing I don't like is the 2 'devil horns' on the heel stab me near the Achilles occasionally. Best Kiger so far, and the most comfortable.
Other gripe is the Nike website and their description of this shoe is rather vague and no listing of specs, also very few online reviews, so I don't think they were sending out these out for review (unlike Runningwarehouse). Poor marketing in general.
Yeah I agree 100% this Kiger is definitely the most natural feeling of all the Nike trail shoes. You're also right, Nike could be doing a better job with a little more detail about the shoe on their website. Give the people what they want! Thanks for watching!
Awesome review! I've never used the kiger, always opting for the wildH in the past. I have quick impressions of the Topo MTR3 & Salomon Genesis to share though. MTR3 46miles on my pair, all on steep singletrack; the upper is much looser than the MTR2, giving all kinds of moving, twisting, and friction inside the shoe -- this must be addressed for the next version. Also, I do pronate on one foot, and the lack of the medial midsole plug from the MTR2 led to a bigtoe ball-of-foot hotspot from medial collapse near the end of my 17mile longest run; I love the extra cushion, but not an ultra shoe for me with these issues. Salomon Genesis: 1oz lighter than the MTR3; quite narrow forefoot, and I've had to switch to thinner socks; excellent lockdown, and quick on downhills; still have a long run to judge further.
Thanks for the comparisons! I was surprised at the amount of Genesis I saw out at Western States. Seems to be replacing the S/lab Ultra 3 on most feet. This Kiger is probably an in-between regarding fit, but definitely less cushion than the MTR3 and Genesis.
Raced the Laugavegur 55 K in Iceland using the Kiger 5 and it performed well on crushed lava, glaciers and other hard-scrambling where mobility was important. It was a little scary on the wet bridges. Drained well. I had forgotten all about the Kiger line appreciate your review. But I am having such good results with the Naked T/r that I’ll stick with that shoe for serious technical races up to 50 K.

I’ve been running in the kiger 5 since it came out, on my third pair now and they don’t exist anymore in my size. Just got the kiger 9’s since they were on sale and stoked to do some trails up in Canada with them. Patiently waiting for your guys’ ultra fly trail review!

Je vais etre tres honnete , pour moi la gagnante est la wilhorse 8 , cette chaussure a l avant pied d une altra , l accroche et la durabilitée d une semelle vibram , l amorti et le confort d une Nike , une stabilitée que je n ais encore jamais vu ailleur , si je devais etre tatillon je dirais 15 gr de trop , mais honnetement cela ne se sent pas , de plus elles sont assez dynamique , et le prix est bien inferieur a toutes ses concurrente direct que sont les xodus ultra , speedgoat , cascadia etc.......c est pour cela que pour moi elle est sur la premiere marche du podium
informative as always. agreed that i've never really got the point/difference of the wildhorse and terra kiger. did however like the terra kiger 6 as a sub ultra race shoe
With this Wildhorse 8 and Kiger 9, there seems to be a decent amount of separation between the two shoes. Perhaps more than in previous years. If you enjoyed the Kiger 6, I have a feeling you'll enjoy the 9!
I honestly like the Zegama a littlebit more. I also don't agree with the most that they are "horrible" on wet surface.... they arent great yes, but not horrible.
But the Kiger feels more "sporty" and dynamic. So for long distance or hiking I pick the Zegama otherwise I go with the Kiger 9... got it for 70bucks, definitely a banger for that money.

Hey for trail workouts do you feel the Kiger 9 and Wildhorse 8 would perform similar? Im mainly going to buy one of them for trail workouts/ runs not super long runs. OR wait for the ultra fly trail runners ( I work at nike so it would be discounted heavily)
I loved my Kigers for quicker workouts, and the Wildhorse for longer, slower days. I could totally run workouts in the Wildhorse, but prefer the lower to the ground, more flexible feel of the Kigers. For trail workouts when the terrain isn't that steep and much more groomer, the Ultrafly is pretty tough to beat. So for you, one might be more ideal than the other, depending on the types of trail workouts you're doing. Thanks for watching!

I second the outsole rubber endorsement.
I wouldn’t wear the Mafate because the midsole is not stable laterally in the forefoot (ie. if you just stand on the ball of your foot and tilt from side to side the refined and stable feel of the heel seems to be gone)
I totally see what you're saying about the Mafate. For me it hits the sweet spot, as the prior versions of the Mafate were too stable feeling for me with how stiff they were. I am so stoked that Nike actually seems to be making some changes for the better with their outsoles!
Glad to hear the improvements on their rubber, wish they used it on the Zegama. But, with vibram on the ultrafly, maybe Nikes terrible rubber days are behind us!

Great conversation. I have both the Kiger and Wildhorse latest models. Kiger makes me feel very nimble and agile. The Wildhorse 8 is slowly turning into my lifestyle shoes since the shape reminds me of a new balance sneaker. I rather run in the Kiger and the Pegasus GTX model.
Haha Nike couldn't be more proud of you to have a spot for Nikes on every run and during the day to day living 😅 I agree though, it's hard to really find a spot in the rotation for the Kiger, Wildhorse, and the Pegasus Trail
I love this shoe so much, haven’t tried the Wildhorse though. Can you guys recommend a similar shoe on road? I keep trying these high stack shoes and they just aren’t good. Appreciate any suggestions, otherwise I’m just gonna wear these on the road haha.
If you're looking for a lower cushion shoe, that's 4mm drop like the Kiger that has some nice flexibility, the Saucony Kinvara has been my go to for a shoe like that for almost a decade now. That could be worth looking into

Kiger 2 didn't work as well as Kiger 1 did for me. Kiger 3 and 4 were the golden era of Kigers for me 😅
For me, I’m going to wait for the ultra fly. I think that will have the perfect blend of materials and outsole(vibram, finally- yes!). Just did almost 12 miles straight out of the box with the summit Vectiv pro. Curious to see how this stacks up to the ultra fly, and also stacks up against the Saucony endorphin edge. (put a fair amount of miles on that shoe as well)
(I got the Vectiv pros for 180 on sale….so that helped PP wise a lot!)
I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on how they all compare! I still haven't gotten to run in the Vectiv Pro, but I have spent time in the Ultrafly, Saucony Endorphin Edge, Hoka Tecton X, and Speedland GS:TAM. Oh and the Naked T/r, since that's a plated trail shoe as well. A lot of carbon in the world, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it 😅
Thumbs up on the Vective Pro. 22 miles straight out of the box, 14 the following day, the carbon wing thing did start to bug my left big toe....
@@mcgovski yeah, it might be a problem for sure on anything more than a 50k IMO. I used the endorphin edge insole and that seemed to help offset that. The insoles they come with are kinda cheap. Something thicker seemed to help tho so maybe give that a try? Just wonder if I’ll be able to use them other than specific long efforts, rather than train in them. I lucked out and found them on sale- 180 and have 2 months leeway to try and return if they indeed don’t work out. (TNF store in boulder had them 30% off)
I’m glad Nike made a turnaround. I think it was the wild horse eight no seven with that big rubber thing across the heel. I took that out because I heard cell McRae that’s her her go to shoe and I took it on a really steep descent off this mountain And I thought it was gonna die. So like a lot of my shoes don’t work it went away and when the aid came out they were offering a ridiculous sale. I think it was like $85 and I almost bought it but I was too scared. I love your channel man. This is great, but I said I would probably go with the paragraph I find a paragraph of beast and I can take it up to about 100 K mostly
I remember when I got my first epic react shoes thinking react foam would be just perfect for the trail. Even took them on some easy trail paths and had a blast. That said I feel like there has been so much unused potential that it’s been a bit frustrating.
Biggest question for me now is what react x foam is gonna feel like 🧐

@@ConversationalPace I thought the ultrafly was a zoom x shoe. I was talking about the upcoming infinity run road shoe with a new react x midsole foam. I’m guessing it will replace the old school react foam in the upcoming trail versions of the Pegasus trail, Kiger and Wildhorse
Ahh didn't read that correctly. You said React X and I read that as Zoom X. Yes, the Ultrafly is going to have Zoom X. I cannot confirm if any of the 2024 trail shoes will get React X, although it would make sense for the new shoes to get that update.

Thanks for another great review guys. I am torn now whether to get the Wildhorse 8's or the Kigers. I have loved my Kiger 8's, with some reservations about the heel and outsole. Sounds like the Kiger 9 has improved upon this. I feel the Kigers have been really good for my foot health compared to running in bigger stack shoes like Speedgoats. The wildhorse seems like a nice middle ground stack shoe but then it is pretty heavy. Hmmm this is going to be a tough decision. Grateful to have so many great options around these days. 👍
Thanks for watching! The heel and outsole have both been improved (in my opinion). While the WH8 is on the heavier side, it doesn't feel as heavy on foot as it does in hand. Definitely a fun problem to have though 😅
La terra kiger 7 et 8 etaient mon model prefferré de chez Nike , je n avais plus acheté les wildhorse depuis le model 3 ou 4 car je n aimais plus ce que Nike en avait fait , mais depuis que j ai acheté la Wildhorse 8 , c est tout simplement devenu ma chaussure de trail de chez Nike preferré , et meme ma chaussure de trail preferrée toutes marque confonduent , c est pour dire !!! Je n acheterais pas cette TK9 , pour moi le fait d avoir enlevé l unitée air zoom a l avant perd tout son interet ......mais cela est propre a moi car j avais trouvé en la TK 7 et 8 une chaussure normale qui se sentait amortie comme une chaussure oversize , j ai un nevrome de morton sous l avant pied , et l unitée zoom air faisait un travail de protection fantastique pour ce probleme , et je leurs passait meme leur accroche mediocre sur roche humide , c est pour dire , mais avec la WH8 , cette chaussure coche toute les cases et ce sans etre une chaussure trop grosse comme les speedgoat que j ai beaucoup mis .....la WH8 est ultra stable , ultra protectrice , ultra confortable , la semelle exterieur accroche de partout , et meme sur roche humide et n a absolument rien a envié a Vibram , dailleur je ne comprends pas comment nike a fait pour faire un partenariat avec vibram alors qu ils tiennent enfin une gomme que tous les fans de nike ont demandé depuis tant d année !!! et pour finir cette WH8 a de la place a l avant pied a faire palir Altra , et un drop de 8 qui se ressent comme un drop de 4 ........j ai plus de 300 km dans mes WH8 et j en suis litterrallement amoureux , ce dimanche j ai un 68 km avec 3500D+ , et je me languis de tester les WH8 sur cette distance , mais je ne peus que vous conseiller d acheter les WH8 qui aux pieds ne se sentent pas lourde dutout , et que dire de son prix .....j ai payé les mienne 93 euros en solde !!! pour moi une concurrente direct des speedgoat , cascadia , xodus ultra 2 .........

I would love to see altras supershoe go to 4 mil drop, also a timp in the slim with some drop would be primo, the farther or faster im going the less im interested in zero drop, more useful as a training tool in my opinion

Are these good for hiking?
They can be a great hiker if you prefer a low top with lighter weight materials and lots of flexibility. If you are looking for something with a lot of protection and support, there are better options than this one.

Was this in relation to the favorite Kiger model and out of Wildhorse, Zegama, Kiger, which one are you not buying? Thanks for calling out the audience on increasing participation 😅 I personally loved the Kiger 3 and 4 models, and at the moment, would have the Kiger and Wildhorse in my rotation, and give the Zegama the boot if I could only keep 2.
@@ConversationalPace 28 mins in. Was waiting for the answer if I really need a Kiger and a Wildhorse as I currently have a Wildhorse 8 and debating on adding a Kiger since it's on sale at the moment. Love the Wildhorse 8 with the React foam and saddle insole for support, but the one drawback is that it's heavy. Kiger is lighter, but is it as comfortable as the Wildhorse? Based on what I gathered, it's not a shoe with much protection. But let's answer some of these unanswered questions, yeah? lol
Well the question was targeted towards the viewers to answer in the comments section on whether they will include more than one of these Nike Trail shoes in their lineup. We don't prefer to directly you should buy this, you should buy that. We like to give the stats, state our opinions of how it felt for us, and then provide enough information about the shoe to allow the viewers to make a more educated decision on their next shoe purchase. With all that being said, I've thoroughly enjoyed having both the WH8 and Kiger 9 in the rotation and use the Kiger for faster days. Not as much cushion as the WH8 for longer days. I have gone as far as 50 miles in the Kiger and that's about the limit for me.

Nike trail has gone from a joke a few years ago (my opinion) to a grouping of shoes I am more and more putting on my feet. Finally listening to their runners and hopefully we see vibram on more of their shoes.
Yes, with Nike finally inking that Vibram contract, and also making some better in house rubber, they can finally start to be seen as some more serious mountain and trail shoes! I sure do hope we see some more Vibram on more of their shoes!

@@ConversationalPace Actually they dont fall apart. They are typically unstable, dont fit well in some part of the shoe, uncomfotable, too firm and have horrible traction. I know feet are so unique and 1s footstrike and bodily organization has everything to do with this... but every time I buy a nike shoe they just dont work for me. Kieger (2-8) Wildhorse (4-8) Trail Peg (1-4) . Zegama is the 1 shoe that I can run in, but the toe box is so sloppy for me, that past 10 miles, my feet arent staying secured to the shoe. As the great philosopher, George Costanza once said, "Its not you (Nike) its me"
