Forester, CRV RD1 & Ridgeline Exploring and Snow Camping

- A crew featuring a Honda CRV RD1, a Honda Ridgline, and my Subaru Forester explore Oregon high desert backcountry southeast of Bend. We discover abandoned places, attempt to scale mountains via questionable trails, and camp in the snow.
TECHNICAL ISSUES APOLOGY: This isn't all the best footage I've ever captured. As I don't have a GoPro yet, I generally film some of my going-down-the-trail shots with my iPhone, which automatically stabilizes them pretty nicely. Prior to this trip, I completely forgot to empty my phone and immediately ran out of room. So there's a lot of shaky footage shot with my still camera and stabilized in post - which gets a little wobbly sometimes. Sorry about that. I'll try to make sure I've got a better cam setup before my next excursion.

I have a manual 1st Gen CR-V basically a very reliable, off road, tent on wheels with great gas milage

5:00 mins Cabin . Keep in mind they logged some of that area believe it or not . Take a closer look for some parts of a saw mill ? 2:00 minutes Pumie Stone Flats . We drove down thru there in April 91 past China Hat to see Lava Tubes . Lavacicle ,Derricks cave and Broken Dome . I live east quite a ways not far off U.S rt 20 . Nice video .

Camping in snow is one of the best things you can do outdoors. It's an amazing experience if you prepare properly. I have a 99 CR-V with a 2" lift and a bunch of mods I DIY'd. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned and I love it.
All my life it never occurred to me to camp in winter. This trip was my first time ever, and I was pretty nervous about it actually. But now I absolutely love it. No fire restrictions, never too hot (I hate being too hot), and nobody out on the trails.

I just got back from a fairly cold 15 🥶 snowy camping trip. I really like that fire pit, I need to get me one of those! I put a wall of reflectics around half of our fire pit. Definitely seems to help!
Reflectix along one side of the campfire is a brilliant idea! We obviously weren't as cold as you but I'm hoping to tackle more cold-weather camping and going to add that to my bag of tricks. Thanks Jon!!

Haha, it still makes me laugh how ubiquitous the coffee segment is, but I guess it really is a universal experience that everyone can relate to. Erik no longer even has the CRV, he's sold it and now driving and modding an AMAZING MItsubishi Montero. I don't know if he kept the table, I'll have to ask. But I think that's an off-the-shelf item from...Front Runner maybe? I'll ask him about that too.

i like to see videos that dont do just one brand of cars. i have a crv and im very impressed with its deep sand and mud capability on street tires. cant wait till i get Ko2s
Check the weight on KO2s. General Grabber AT tires are lighter, and likely more appropriate for a small SUV. Also check the price. Six Grabbers could cost the same as four KO2. You need at least five matching tires for an AWD, preferably with similar tread depth, so six allows you to blow out a tire completely and still have a matching spare.

Thank you so much! Such a refreshing bit of fresh air away from all those crazy expensive overlanding vehicles! I use my 2001 Chevy Tahoe work truck to get out to camp and adventure. It suits me just fine! You have a new subscriber and follower. Hey I would love to get the gps coordinates from you on that industrial site. I’m using multiple map sources to identify the logging railroad history in Central Oregon. Would love to add that location to my GAIA master map.
I wasn't navigating that day and don't even know what all roads we went down, so I don't know the exact spot. We saw a few abandoned buildings here and there. I think this one sort of looked out over the open desert to the north of Fort Rock as we were cruising along the fringes of the national forest lands? Something like that if I remember right. Do you have an idea what the equipment in that little building would have been used for?
I’m anxious to see the equipment. It seems more complex than just a sawmill. It will be high on my list for this summer.
Came for the crv stayed for the crv almost left because of the music over. Not an absolute deal breaker though. Nice editing!
My 97 CRV has gone from St. Louis Mo to Denver then southwest to Gunnison CO then to 4 corners up through south Utah then west through Vegas then to north of LA then Hwy 70 back to STL!! All in 3 weeks. She did not like the mountain highways going uphill but GD she made it with only 1 flat tire

A very nice video, love the camping in the snow ! That Honda Ridgeline is very interesting, same philosophy as our SUV's with independant rear suspension. Does it have low range ?
I was thoroughly impressed with the Ridgeline. It did not struggle once and, getting a closer look at it, it has a lot of really well-thought-out features. I'm *guessing* no low-range; it probably uses some kind of traction control system instead, but my Forester has traction control instead of low-range and still basically goes wherever I point it. 1" lift from ADF. Paid the local Subie tuner shop to install it, supposedly simple, but beyond my comfort level.
The bumper bar is a superficial bolt-on for supporting lights only. AFAIK there is no off-the-shelf winch mounting solution for an SH Forester, at least in the US (might be something in Australia). Here, that requires custom fabrication work.
Tires are 215/75R15.
Did the CR-V have the clutch mod done in this video?

Just discovered your adventures! I'm in the Oregon area starting to discover the roads less traveled. Your site and detailed instructions on routes are great! If you use Gaia, would you ever consider sharing your routes/gpx files? Maybe I can join one day :)
I do use Gaia but I don't usually record my tracks, and my pre-planned routes often end up not working out in one way or another so I would hesitate to share those. I try to provide enough guidance to give ideas for cool areas to explore, while still allowing anyone to make their own discoveries as they explore. 8^) Where in Oregon are you?

Another great video. You tell a story well, very enjoyable. And can I ask, what kind of coffee maker is that?
It's just a moka pot, but with a more rounded form than the traditional octagonal angular ones more commonly seen. It makes excellent coffee, and it's what I use most frequently at home, but I've stopped using this for camping because the small, rounded shape of mine is pretty inefficient on a camp stove. I received this bulbous one as a gift and while it works very nicely on the smallest burner at home, on my camp stove the flame is too wide and too much heat just goes up the sides...the water takes forever to boil. This one is mine:

though for camping I'd recommend a more traditional model with a wider, flat base.

Can you do a video of how you set up your camp once you get to where you going, your sleeping setup, and how you entertain yourself once you get to where your going? I have a small family of 3, with a 3 yr old daughter and I want to start using our AWD SUV to explore and camp. I’ve camped only a hand full of times as a child and it always turned out kinda bad. Ok want to give my daughter and my family a positive experience. We go to the mountians pretty regularly and I already no the spot I want to camp at. Restrooms are available but that’s it. I want to sleep in our vehicle, and money and camping supplies are extremely limited. Looking for info on a basic, cheap, easy, comfortable overnight soft roading camping trip. Meal prep and organization to minimize supplies is also a big a question.
Yes! I've been thinking about doing something along those lines actually. I'm hoping to pull that together on my next solo camping trip. Simple and affordable are definitely priorities for me as well when it comes to camping. Thanks for watching!

Does that CRV have a regular automatic transmission? or the CVT like they do these days. I have 2017 and it has the CVT, which I'm told is fairly dangerous to off-road in, serious chance of belt failure under off-road loads.
Oh no, that's an old first-gen CRV, from long before anyone put CVTs in anything. He had a 5-speed manual in that car, but if it had been an automatic, it would've been a regular old-school automatic. :-)

Also what is the transmission of your Forester?
Im summing up thoughts cause i may be buying a first gen Forester with automatic but since i havent had an AT vehicle before id like to know what to expect.🤣
My Forester has the 4-speed automatic. It has worked great for me and is reputed to be a reasonably reliable transmission. While you'll read arguments In both directions, I think an automatic makes more sense when offroading a vehicle like this. In this video, we were unable to ascend that cool little road up Pine Mountain because of Erik's manual transmission in the CRV. I was having no issues at all with the climb.
The exception however would be if you can get a first gen Forester with a low-range gearbox in it. I believe that was only possible with the manual transmission. There are many many times I wished for low-range. The auto + traction control in my SH generally pulls me through OK, but often with a bunch of wheel spin that wouldn't even happen if I could simply crawl in low-range. Spinning wheels = some amount of control loss, which I never ever like to experience on narrow treacherous mountain roads. 8^)

@@softroadingthewest Thanks for the answer. The guys from the local Subaru shop told me to go for the automatic. I heard that they are reliable and im happy you said that too. I heard it can send power to the axel with more traction. And the 125hp boxer should benefit greatly from the torque converter, right?
Oh and also when do you do your ATF changes?

Which forest road did you find the abandon building and machinery on?
I'm not sure, I wasn't navigating this trip so I really wasn't paying very close attention to where we were, just luxuriating in someone else deciding where to go. 8^) I do think we were somewhere along the southern fringes of the national forest along northern edge of the open desert surrounding Fort Rock...I don't think we could see Fort Rock from that spot but you can see the desert vista, my sense was that we were sort of looking down towards the Christmas Valley area..ish?
if you could please talk about the capabilities of other cars like the Crv vs your Subbie, that would be nice. I was lucky to be able to buy 2nd gen Crv w 5spd from original owner, high miles, though lady driven. id like to built it up, so some insight would be great, thank you
I generally hesitate to make comparisons with other cars if I haven't driven them myself...I honestly don't know how car x or car y compares to the capabilities of my Forester. Having hit the trails many times with three different first-gen CRVs, I've been very impressed by what I've seen them do. I don't know how the 2nd gen compares. The reason Erik couldn't get up that snowy hill climb was because he had to ride his clutch to control wheel spin and eventually he was just burning too much clutch. That's the only time I've seen a CRV not be able to go where I was able to go, but that's really more a comparison of offroading a manual vs an automatic. :-)
I've seen some crv done up pretty nice and I own a subby but the Honda Ridgeline!? Lol you gotta draw the line somewhere man lol.
Really? Does a line *need* to be drawn? I see people out adventuring in passenger cars...better to get out there than not, as long as you know your limits. In any case, that Ridgeline had no trouble going anywhere my Subaru went...and he had room to sleep in it...and his cargo hauling had me beat by miles. Earned my respect for sure.

I could not help but notice you install a gas canister in your Kovea stove every time you use it. Is there some reason you cannot leave the canister installed? I'm thinking about getting one of these stoves
As I recall, that is what the manual instructs. I mean, I would leave it in over the course of an evening or whatever, but since I was sleeping in my car, I didn't want to take any chances relying upon the valve of this $18 Coleman stove to keep the butane in the can. Ultimately putting in the butane canister and removing it with each cooking session is a very quick and easy matter compared to threading on the green propane canisters. It never felt cumbersome to deal with.

Would you be willing to tell me the type of tires on the crv and tire size? I need tires on mine and going to Hat Point, Hells Canyon.
Yes, the CRV was running BFGoodrich T/A KO2 in 215/75R15, exactly as on my Forester. They're heavy and not the cheapest option, but I've been very very happy with these tires on the trail.
I have never seen that Honda Pickup before... Definitely not selling in Europe... What type of 4x4 does it have? Is it based on CRV? Oh and fresh snow there... I'm looking forward to this years first snow... Maybe next week..
It's AWD, not 4x4. I believe it has unibody construction rather than a typical body on frame pickup build. It seemed to be nicely capable, although I don't think there's much in the way of aftermarket mods available for it. Jason, the guy driving the Honda pickup in this video, has since traded it in for a Tacoma (that's him and his Tacoma in the Cascade Creeks video you also commented on). :-)
@@softroadingthewest Ok... AWD, 4WD, 4x4... Everybody corrects me everytime but there is no definition what is correct. At the end its all only name for four wheel drive...
I was mainly asking if there is some transfer clutch to engage second axle or is there C/D.
But it is solved... Tacoma is for better i think.
@@MrRichieCZ I think many of us think of 4x4 as a body-on-frame truck with a traditional 4 wheel drive system and a low-range transfer case designed for offroad use, and AWD as a system on a unibody car designed primarily as a safety feature to keep a car on the road (but which many of us take advantage of off-road). The Ridgeline is built more like an AWD car and I'm pretty sure there was no low-range gearing in it.
In any case, yes, I agree that for as capable as the Ridgeline was, the Tacoma is clearly a more capable offroad machine. :-)

Very cool coffee pot. What is it?
It's basically just a standard Italian moka type coffeemaker, only it's formed of curved steel instead of the typical angular aluminum style. I received it as a gift but I think it's this one:

It makes very very good coffee, but the way the base curves in, it doesn't catch the heat of a gas burner very well and takes a ludicrous amount of time to actually brew on my camp stove. I've since given up on using it for camping. It's still my first choice at home, though I would recommend selecting a model with a wider base rather than tapered like mine. Thanks for watching!

Is this the 1inch lift kit? Because I saw in a previous video you said you wanted to upgrade to a 2 inch kit
I'm still at 1" (1.375" rear) to this day, which was where I was at in this trip. Perhaps I mentioned wanting to move up to the 2" lift in my walkthrough video, but yeah haven't done that yet. I'm pleased with the value I've received from the 1" kit but would still recommend one of the 2" kits.
@@softroadingthewest Thanks for the reply. You've got some pretty good clearance there that's why I asked. I have a 2011 Forester and will be adding the same lift kit soon.
@@stephanm.4715 For sure, can't complain. Even bone stock the clearance is already good on these, so every additional inch is gravy. The tires provide a bit of additional lift as well. Good luck with the build!

Does the crv have lift spacers or lift springs?
Zach Trujillo it had lift spacers on it. At the time I think it was 1.5” front and 2” rear

Yep, all three of those guys are my friends and trail buddies, though @adventure_rd1 no longer has the CRV...he's the guy with the Montero seen in some of my more recent videos, now going by @dahlenadventures :-)

It’s a basic moka pot, it just has a bulbous shape instead of the typical angular octagonal form. Mokas make excellent coffee but I’ve since given up on using this for camping...the narrow base just doesn’t capture heat efficiently from my butane stove and it takes forever to brew. It’s still my go-to at home though.

Haha, there's certainly some of that in the western Oregon hills, but this desert area is far too arid to cultivate cannabis - or anything else really. It's just rangeland. We were at the southern edge of the national forest at that point. There's some BLM land beyond, but it's interspersed with private land...this looked pretty legit. 8^) In any case there were other roads that headed down into that general area, which we quickly abandoned anyway with an icy wind whipping across the open desert. 8^) Thanks for watching!

This is a pretty old episode...Looking back at it now, I can make a huge list of things that are wrong with it, haha. :-) I'm not a professional but I keep trying to improve the product as I go. Thanks for trying though. More recent episodes are generally better, though I still manage to make mistakes here and there. :-)

Can it with the bad music. What is 'bad music'? 1. Music you wouldn't voluntarily listen to. 2. When you think you're 'supposed to
add some music here' -- don't that's how cliched crap is made. Hollywood often uses music as a crutch for a poorly told story. 3. When you have a montage sequence that needs some cohesion. Montage sequences come in two basic forms. A rapid compilation of 'events' that quickly tell a part of the story that is important but not critical. Say off-roading on an isolated island. It's not about the ferry ride to the island, it's about driving the increasingly difficult and then missing tracks on the island. So quick montage. Bad montage we all know, in feature films the new couple are holding hands on the beach, chasing pigeons, trying on hats. This is felony level bad. You mention the abandoned machinery, but you don't show much of it, then you say, "It's just nice to be outdoors." Nice. Understanding and communication are goals. Nice? Nice is eating at McDonalds, it might seem okay going down, but when you weigh 270 lbs and you're pre-diabetic, how's 'nice' working for you now. Show the machinery, follow the connections: motor to pulleys, gears; gears to ? Someone watching this will know what it is. Now you're communicating not just to, but with your viewers.
I wanted to watch this to see how well these non-4x4 vehicles do in the snow. I finally became annoyed and stopped watching. Most people probably won't. The best shots were the music free shots of vehicles driving. Good luck. Sorry to be such a prick; you can do better.
I can appreciate that music choices and video editing are subjective and there can be differing opinions, and certainly respect your right to dislike my choices and express that opinion. This, however, seems like a disproportionate amount of anger over something as trivial as the music on some silly CZcams video you paid nothing to watch. There is so much in this world that is far more worthy of outrage. I'm going to respectfully suggest that you stop watching my videos, because you are just going to be aggravated by the bad music choices on all of them, past and future. This is the second such comment you've left on one of my videos...I'm not sure why you're back for more. I wish you the best and hope you are able to find some videos out there on other channels which meet your standards.
