  • We get out on many awesome adventures. But they don't always go as well as we'd like. Such as this trek into an area of Oregon's coastal rainforest we had never explored before. My friend Shawn ( ‪@silver_rd1545‬ ) joins Lucie and I for an excursion through BLM and National Forest lands which, frankly, was far from the best experience we'd ever had.

    So sorry for the drone loss. As a drone owner I really feel your pain. Something good that comes out of this experience is that you were able to share it with your daughter. Not everyone is so lucky to have a daughter that will go camping with her dad. Years from now you'll both be able to say, "Remember that time..." So far you're both in good spirits and seem to be handling it better than many would. Hopefully part two will show us how the day improved.

      Indeed, lost a drone, gained a lifetime story. :-) The loss wasn't financially catastrophic (it was just a Spark I had bought used off eBay for pretty cheap) and while we were pretty bummed and considered just going home, we ultimately agreed it made more sense to try and salvage something of the trip. Editing of part two is well under way and I'm hoping to have it up sooner than my usual weekly interval. :-) Thanks for watching!

      That's why I ended up getting a used Spark off eBay. It was *very* affordable and won't be catastrophic to replace, but still was able to get me some decent aerial footage, and really simple to learn to fly (and way more fun than I expected). Since I've now got all the Spark peripherals, I'm just going to grab another used standalone Spark off eBay and get back up in the air. If I had dropped a grand on a drone, that would be it, I'd be done.
      I sure wish I had that backup footage though. Being able to post a drone crash video would've helped fund the replacement, LOL.

      I was kicking myself for not being mentally prepared to immediately know how to abort the return to home. I did a ton of practicing in reasonably safe places to get good at piloting the drone before ever going out into the wilds, but in the heat of the moment, I didn't have the reflex to cancel the return (if that's even possible, I haven't even looked it up yet). I had a clear shot straight down to the ground and more than enough battery if it would've just kept coming straight down. :-( Also aggravating is that the return to home doesn't turn the drone around so the front is facing the direction of flight. My drone had front obstacle avoidance sensors but none in the rear, and the stupid thing took off towards home flying in reverse. Fortunately it was just a Spark which I had purchased used off eBay, and I still have the controller, batteries, case, props, and other stuff, so getting back in the air with another used Spark won't be too catastrophically painful. Not the best moment though just as Coronavirus has brought my business to a halt. Thanks for watching!

      At this point, it's been up in the tree for almost 2 weeks and been rained on extensively. It's dead. It's not high value enough to warrant recovery & repair, and there was only a few minutes of video on the card. While I know which tree it's in, it's so high and the tree so dense that you can't even see it to shoot at it. The stuff I still have - controller, extra batteries, charger, extra props, case, and other accessories - are actually worth more than than the drone itself, which I bought used off eBay to begin with. I can simply get another one used off eBay and it won't be a catastrophic expense. It's not even worth the time & gas (and state lockdown violation, heh) to drive to the location. :-)

    Very clever on this one! You keep coming up with fun ways to entertain us! I loved it! I’m sure by now that somebody has mentioned that yes you can cancel the RTH feature of the Spark. It’s probably the first thing we Spark flyers should practice. It seems that most all of the crashes or fly always are due to some automatic mode of the drone. Know how to cancel quickly and then manually fly it back.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety

      Actually, you are the first commenter to confirm the RTH can be canceled...I still wasn't sure and I hadn't yet looked into it, so this is really good to know - thank you. I had ample battery to land the drone right in front of me if I had had the presence of mind to cancel the RTH. My priority, once I get another Spark in hand, is to spend more practice time familiarizing myself more deeply with the app rather than piloting, so any emergency procedures will become second nature. That, and making an RTH altitude setting check a regular part of my preflight. All I would've needed was maybe 5 more feet of altitude to clear that treetop and the RTH would've been fine. That little thing is so easy to fly, and I had so many successful practice flights, that I was a little too complacent about some of those details. Lesson learned for sure. :-)

      The gates were all at boundaries of BLM or National Forest, where it intersected private land. It's always a possibility that has to be considered when driving roads that cross private lands. It's easy to see on public lands maps where the roads hit private land. One should just plan on hitting gates at those spots, it's just that sometimes we get lucky and are allowed to traverse the private lands. Safest always to assume you can't. :-)

      Yes, one of my lessons here for sure is to actually figure out what a safe RTH altitude would be for the tall firs I often find myself surrounded by. I had neglected to give this much thought during all my practice flights when I was being ultra cautious to begin with, not flying near tall trees, and landing it well before the RTH trigger. I had so many successful flights that I got a little overconfident. Fortunately it's not too catastrophically expensive to pick up another used Spark off eBay. Oh yes, entirely impossible. These are huge tall trees...impossible to climb without specialized loggers equipment and even with the right equipment and expertise, definitely not worth the risk to life and limb just for my relatively inexpensive drone. We thought about hooking up a strap to the tree and trying to shake it with the car, but it was way too thick and solid, the only thing that would have happened is damage to the car. I could go back to the spot and see if any strong winds have knocked it out of the tree, but it's been up there for nearly two weeks now in the rain so it will be dead anyway. It was just a Spark that I had purchased used off eBay, so it won't be catastrophic to replace. I still have all the peripheral items (controller, batteries, chargers, case, props, etc) so I can just snag another used Spark only off eBay for not too much money and get back in the air. :-) Trying to get part 2 done for tomorrow or Saturday!

    What kind of drone was it that you were flying? I have 2 DJI drones , a Spark and Phantom 4. Both warn me for several seconds on the Apple phone or iPad screen that they are going into return to home mode before they actually go in. There is a cancel button before it decides to start retuning home. Also there is a failsafe on top of that that kicks in and stops the drone from taking off if you move any of the sticks on the controller.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      It was a Spark, and it certainly did warn me, but I was admittedly unfamiliar with how to cancel the return to home...my own fault for being unprepared. I scanned the screen quickly in a panic but I was afraid to take my eyes off the drone in case something went wrong. Even with glasses on, my closeup vision is poor and in haste I could not figure out how to cancel. Such a dumb, preventable error. I was proud of myself for having spent a considerable amount of time on practice flights getting good at piloting, but I didn't spend enough time familiarizing myself with all contingencies. On the plus side, I bought the Spark used, it wasn't terribly expensive, and since I have all the peripherals, batteries, etc. it won't be catastrophic to replace it with another used standalone Spark. First priority will be practicing emergency procedures. :-)

    • @porsche558
      @porsche558 Před 4 lety

      softroadingthewest Everyone makes mistakes, the key when flying anything from a passenger plane to an R/C drone is to try not to panic. Also another good tip is always have a backup plan or 2. Crap happens and sometimes you can’t land where you originally intended to. Before I fly I always check my surroundings and if there is a lot of tall trees and branches I might make the call to not fly even if I want to get a picture really badly. When I get up to altitude I look around for alternative landing spots before I fly off anywhere else. I think the other big thing that catches people off guard is wind. On the ground the wind might not be so bad but as you climb higher the wind speed changes sometimes dramatically. The smaller the drone the more likely it is to flyaway in the wind. From what I’ve heard the new Mavic mini is a great drone but it’s a good deal lighter than the Spark so it gets knocked around by wind easily. Living out where you are in Oregon there are a lot of beautiful places to go and get amazing drone shots. I live on the East coast, there is a lot of camping places here it’s mostly campgrounds. We lack any decent wilderness camping spots. Anyway keep on making awesome videos, sorry about the Spark, don’t give up on drones. You might be able to get a good deal on a Mavic Air or Mavic pro, both would be an awesome upgrade!

It was just a Spark which I had purchased used for a very good price. I haven't talked about it much but I have a DJI Phantom 4 I was really excited about when purchasing.
    After some initial test flights we went to Colorado.
    On the way there we stopped at a friends house in St Louis.
    Here is the result:
    czcams.com/video/Cz0GQ-i1AaU/video.html
    This video is extemely painful to watch if you after 0:30 if you know what a DJI Phantom 4 cost in 2016.
    The good news is DJI warrantied it. I still have it although I rarely use it.
    It's a huge pain that's usually not worth the trouble. The only time I've been happy I had it was the "can it water" video.
    Even then, it's rare to use it because it requires a crew to use and it's usually just me.
    Great concept for a video!
    We're all going through some hard times and it's nice to see something positive about it.
    Thank you, bubby.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      Oooh my, that would have been far more painful to witness than the demise of my measly little Spark which I bought used off eBay for cheap. Glad the warranty worked out on yours...an obvious disadvantage to buying used, although even when I buy another used Spark, I'll be into it all for less than if I'd bought a new drone.
      A friend of mine recently got the Mavic Mini and after some initial successful test flights, he got brave and took it over a river, where it suddenly decided to just fly straight down into the water despite no inputs from him on the controller and ample battery life. DJI examined the flight data and sent him a new drone.
      Among the many things I loved about my Spark was how compact the whole kit was, even with controller and other goodies. Flying it was way more fun than I'd anticipated, and the video quality was adequate for my uses - looks better than what I film with the iPad on my dash for example. The comfortable price tag buying it used also made it much less nerve-wracking. Since I still have all the peripheral stuff, I'm just going to pick up another used standalone Spark off eBay and get back to flying. Making sure I've got contingency preparedness better rehearsed, and being more conservative with how far I push the battery. Oh, and clearing the *&%! cache before each trip.

    My man with the expert storytelling. Love it. I know the drone pain very well. Had to chase my spark down in the middle of the woods a few times. So what do you think about traveling to remote places during stay at home order? Only risk really is spreading via the gas station.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      Well, I have mixed feelings. My interpretation of the governor's order - and of an Oregon State Police post on the subject - is that driving solo to the wilderness should not be a violation, e.g. hiking is considered a permitted activity as long as social distancing is observed. By the letter of the law, I don't think we'd get cited for doing this.
      So it becomes a larger question of personal social responsibility...is doing that increasing risk to the community? If we don't stop in to rural stores and the only contact is at gas stations, that's pretty minimal compared to all the people I still see going to the grocery store every day or getting takeout food (which it feels we're being encouraged to do to support our local businesses).
      But I've seen some persuasive arguments that heading for the hills increases general community risk, because if something were to go wrong or we were to suffer some kind of (non-Corona) emergency, we'd be placing strains on a system that is teetering on a dangerous edge. And none of us knows for sure today if we might have been infected five days ago and could potentially be spreading it, if minimally, when we go out.
      So....I don't know. My business has ground to a halt and CZcams may be my primary (if massively inadequate) source of income for the next month or two. Which of course makes me want to get out into the wilderness to film more videos. Plus that's even easier right now because I could disappear for three days and not cause any issues with my clients...kind of a rare opportunity it pains me not to take advantage of.
      But I think for now I'm going to respect the spirit of the lockdown and stay home. I have backlogged unseen video footage that can be edited into episodes, there's content I can shoot in the garage, and there are other neglected softroadingthewest projects I could finally devote some attention to. We'll see how it goes. I do feel that driving by myself into the wilderness for a couple nights of solo dispersed camping is more socially responsible than my neighbor driving across town to Costco every other day.
      What about you?

      We weren't far from the coast and were atop a high ridge, so that tree should actually get buffeted by solid winds pretty regularly. I have the spot marked so I can go back and see if it happens to get knocked down, but it's been almost two weeks and it has already been rained on several times...the drone itself is certainly toast by now and it wasn't expensive enough to warrant repair work, cheaper to just get another used one. I wouldn't mind recovering the memory card, but there's only a few minutes of footage so it may not even be worth the time & gas to get back to that spot. I may give it a shot next time I'm in the area though.

  • @es0terra

      Each of the places we hit a gate was at a boundary of BLM or National Forest land. It was private land beyond those gates. Oftentimes, you can get through on the roads anyway...we crossed onto (and back off of) private lands many times over the course of this day. But the landowners are within their rights to gate off their lands if they so choose. It's a calculated risk we knew we were taking heading into this area, it was checkerboarded private/public lands and gated roads are always a possibility. :-)

    I'm from England so please excuse the question. I thought BLM land was owned by the nation. Or rather, owned by the people rather than the government. Who sells the land? Where does the money go? How is it allowed to be sold off like this? Surely leased for logging etc is the way to go?

    • @erikl85
      @erikl85 Před 4 lety

      They don't generally sell it off, the federal land is checker-boarded in the west as the government in the 19th century initially granted every other section of land (1 sq mile) to the railroad companies to encourage expansion, with the intention of selling of the rest of the land, which didn't end up happening. The railroad companies sold most of their land to timber companies eventually. However the BLM and USFS will do land swaps with timber companies to try and consolidate land and reduce checker-boarding.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety

      erikl85 explained it well. BLM lands do belong to us and we're free to be on them for the most part, but the checkerboarding Erik described is very common in western Oregon so it's almost impossible to avoid crossing onto and off of private lands over and over in the course of an excursion. The roads follow the terrain rather than the ownership (and the ownership changes regularly anyway). Heading into areas like this is always a crapshoot and while oftentimes the roads will go through, locked gates are always a risk. Shawn and I originally planned to be in a completely different area of solid unbroken national forest, but due to snow we changed plans and decided to take our chances in this area neither of us had previously explored. And, I guarantee you, never will again, LOL. Thanks for watching!
