  • From peaceful mountain meadows to messy muddy mishaps, neither of these short treks was quite enough for a full episode, so you get two mini-adventures for the price of one! Check out three modded Honda CRVs (also, a Jeep, a 4Runner, and my Subaru Forester) poking around western Oregon's Coast Range.
    If you enjoy seeing CRVs hitting the trail, my friend Shawn (who appears in this video) has his own channel with lots more videos documenting his adventures in his lifted first-gen CRV: ‪@silver_rd1545‬

    I have been enjoying your videos, but something about this one really speaks to me. The music, the editing, the pacing - this comes across as a small independent film. This is art.
    There is still deep snow here in Upstate NY, but you and others have inspired me to do some exploring when the weather improves. My daily driver is just a minivan, but your videos give me the desire to take some baby steps and start some adventures of my own. Thank you for sharing your passion.

      I had 2 outbacks both blew their head gaskets at like 130k miles but it's a pretty easy fix as far as engines go. I did both of mine myself and they ran fine . Only spent like 500 in parts to get the heads re down and then the gasket kit and timing belt to throw it all back together myself. Then they ran on strong . The AWD was pretty good . I have a crv now but miss my outback for sure .

    Ooooooh Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhh! What an excellent episode! I’m really digging the segment about offroading Pysoftroading 🤣. With my CVT Subaru I had to be type Bo because I feared getting stuck, in the Passport I’m drive like type XOB now, because I feel that I no longer have to use momentum to get over obstacles, and as you can see from the later part in your video, using too much momentum can be really dangerous! 😭. Great video and great friends for letting you use that footage. It’s so helpful for other people to see (that are getting into overlanding/SoftRoading/car camping).

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      I have a fifth Black Rhino wheel mounted with a full size KO2 spare in my trunk. I took my chances for a long time carrying only the OEM donut spare, but knew that I was living dangerously. I wouldn't want to find myself 50 miles deep into the backcountry on primitive roads and need to extract on that flimsy stock spare. Compared to other goodies, it's a painful thing to spend money on since it just sits, unused and unseen, but the peace of mind is nice to have...one less worry when I'm out there. :-)

  • @campmodewithrussell
    @campmodewithrussell Před 3 lety

    Great adventure folks! Looks like the maroon crv may be a 3rd gen? I am looking for reliable information pertaining to lifting mine , like when do you have do much lift adding stress to the cv shafts/joints and do I get more flex removing the front sway bar links? Etc. any help?

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 3 lety

      Yes I believe it's a 3rd gen, but I know nothing about CRVs specifically. Those things are true of Subarus...if you lift a Subaru too much, it can stress the CV joints (that's why most Subarus are only lifted 2" - lifting more requires a lot of additional work to protect the axles, brake lines, etc). And disconnecting sway bars on a Subaru definitely improves flex...in fact I completely deleted the rear sway bar on my Forester. I imagine these things are generally universal to all independent-suspension AWD cars, but I don't have personal knowledge about CRVs specifically. I would look online for a CRV forum. Most forums for cars that often get modded for off-roading have a dedicated section for discussing off-road mods. Good luck!

    I was wondering what bad effect does a cracked exhaust manifold have on your car?

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm not certain to be honest. I do believe that some engines expect a certain amount of back pressure from the exhaust system, so if the exhaust flows TOO freely, the rest of the motor doesn't function properly? That's something I've read before without fully understanding it and I don't even know if it applies to these old Honda engines. Perhaps he was just concerned about the crack worsening on the trail and something coming apart. Or he may have wanted to take his time going over everything else more thoroughly to make sure there was no other damage.
      If I remember right, he managed to find another manifold at a junkyard that afternoon and had replaced his cracked manifold by the end of the day. :-)

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      These are just roads on BLM lands. You can also find roads like these on National Forest lands. Look at a map, pick an area of public lands, and just start poking up roads. I usually pre-scout with Google Earth and topographical maps to roughly plan some kind of loop that might have interesting points, but also make many of my best discoveries accidentally, just making unplanned turns up small side roads and spurs. Once you start doing it, you'll gain a feel for it. I recommend having some kind of offline navigation system on board which doesn't rely on cell service, because there usually is none. These roads are rarely marked in any way, they split and split again and can all start to look the same, so having a way to navigate your way back out is wise. I use Gaia GPS which allows you to pre-download multiple map layers of the area you're going into and uses your device's GPS (which works regardless of cell service) to show you where you are on the map, and can also record your route so you can always backtrack if needed. I also run an older Garmin GPS I picked up for cheap off Craigslist, it has proven useful as well. This is probably my most frequently asked question so I *am* planning to make a video which will cover all of this. :-)

    What do you air down to?

      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety +1

      Mike Thompson On basic forest roads like this I usually go down to 23 psi from my on-pavement pressure of 40. When traction is a bigger concern I’ll go down to 18, and all the way to 12 in sand.

    Is there anywhere I can find build info on the red third gen crv?

      I'm not sure if he still has the CRV but lots of photos of his build as it evolved still on his page.

    P.s. I'd love to meet up sometime here soon. I'm just a few minutes away from you. Feel free to check us out on Facebook at "Life Line Overlanding".

    I'm wildly disappointed in Matt. A cracked manifold is nothing to be concerned about--definitely want to fix it, but not so much to turn around...

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  Před 4 lety

      He had to do what made sense to him. He may have wanted to more thoroughly inspect for other damage without being out on the trail. He also jumped on the repair, I think he had found a replacement at a junkyard and had fixed his car by the end of the day. Fair enough. He knows this area very well already and wasn't necessarily missing out on anything, I don't think we hit a single trail he hasn't already run himself. :-)

      Eugenio Moore They’re not blinking, they’re LED headlights...certain LEDs appear to flicker on camera. To our eyes in person the lights were steady. 👍

    Why would anyone drive urban crossover on trails like this. I’d opt for a Land Cruiser, Wrangler or a 4Runner rather than a flimsy CRV.
