  • Some thoughts on what you should look for and look out for when buying a used rig at a hamfest. Also my experience buying and repairing a Yaesu FT-101ZD.

Hopefully by now you have it going like gangbusters. I am still using my 101ZD that I bought new when they first came out back in the late 70's. I have bought new rigs since, but I always fall back on this rig. I have never put a screw driver to it. The receiver is great, but the reason I keep on using it is the Tube Finals. Can't beat a pair of 6146's.

More wisdom than repair info here, but very good advice. My FT-101ZD Mark I bought new is still my favorite rig after using many others. It seems that old radios don't like to sit for years and need to be used from time to time to keep them young.

Thanks for sharing the video. I am purchasing a 101ZD MK2 in a few days.

After the restoration work, it has been a good rig. Hope you enjoy yours.

Great buy, I love mine! I've had two. I bought one years ago in the early 80's to work Army Mars and loved it. I wish I had the one with the am/fm filters and ended up selling it. I missed it so much I bought another about 10 years and still use. Mine needs work now, but minor cleaning of the rotary switches and it's due for a capacitor replacements. I've scouted the web and eBay for newer more modern radios, but in my $400 price range they all need "...a little work" hi. 73's

Thanks Jack. I was out of commission with a hip and back issue that kept me out of the basement workshop for several months and have been playing catch-up with work since, but hope to get some new videos up soon.

Okay ole chap. Don't rush it. Take your time and mend well. Look forward to new videos when you complete them.
This video makes for some sobering thoughts....not that one's rig is the most important item upon coming to age but its worth considering in the overall scheme of things.
I found your choice of the Yaesu FT101Z most interesting.
Just wondering what you think of a choice (for reasons you identified) of a late 70s/80s rig like the Icom 745/751 etc. My thinking is that they would be younger than those of the 101z era but still built like a truck as compared to modern equivalents. In theory at least, parts should be more available and someone with your skills wouldn't have a problem keeping them running.
I'd enjoy your comments on this. Also looking to get back on air so maybe I'll catch you on sometime.
      73.

Just bought one and, no, I didn't do an awful lot of homework. I hope I'm not in over my head!

Rick Rose I'm no expert, but if you have any get stuck give a shout. Recapping, replacing all the smaller relays, and cleaning the contacts went a long ways. The relays were the thing I learned the hard way.
