History of the city of Syracuse - Part 1

  • Sicily has been a melting pot of civilisations for pretty much all of its histories, due to its strategic spot in the centre of the Mediterranean, being a vital stepping stone between Africa and Italy. This was the case during the early years of civilisation in the region, with the island essentially being split into two zones of influences. The portion to the west of the island was dominated by the naval power of Carthage. Whilst to the East the area was under the direct influence of Greek colonies, with the principle Greek colony being located on the tip of this area. This is the history of the great city-state of Syracuse.

    Nice video, however you read directly from Wikipedia, without changing the structure or the manner of the narrative.
    Verdict:
    - Good voice,
    - well placed animation,
    this could have been much better if the author committed more than 15 min to prepare the body of the text. No value added.

    • @AncientHistoryGuy
      @AncientHistoryGuy  Před 5 lety

      First, of thank you for the compliments, as regards to reading directly off of Wikipedia, that's just not the case, this script has over 800 words, whilst the Wikipedia page until Gelos death has a little over 400 words. Further, you cannot exactly change the structure of events in history, overwise, it wouldn't be historical, things have to be done linearly otherwise it just wouldn't make sense. The script also takes several days to write, with various sources, as shown in the description being regularly researched, not to mention the proofreading process which can sometimes take up to a week. Then on top of that further research needs to be done for the animations, in terms of armour, boats, city structure, maps, trade networks, moving of people, cities, sacking of cities and territories during this timeframe. Again thank you for the compliments and have a nice day! :)

    • @BrodyMarody
      @BrodyMarody Před 5 lety

      Ancient History Guy, thank you for quick response!
      I will provide exact time stamps of items taken directly from Wikipedia: (almost word for word)
      - 0:55 to 1:15 - first paragraph of history of Syracuse: Greek Period
      - 1:58 to 5:50 - second, third and fourth paragraphs + first sentence of the fifth paragraph history of Syracuse: Greek Period
      To summarize, I think it’s a good video, especially the animation. It was wrong of me to say entire thing was from Wikipedia, but I found only 1:38 seconds of the video that didn’t correspond to the Wiki article directly. I would say you provided about a third and definitely not a half outside of wiki.
      Also to clarify I don’t think it’s wrong to take from wiki, I just thought you could have made the text you took a bit more engaging, after all oral presentation has the flexibility that written lacks. I never read that article about Syracuse and I went to read it after seeing your video, and to me it just seemed as exact replica.
      Furthermore, if you would like to improve the oral story telling, look up some books they are able to breakdown the difference in oral vs written presentation and what points to Accenture to achieve formidable difference in narrative styles.
