How to Measure Guitar Pots Taper & Resistance

  • In this mini tutorial we cover how to measure the taper curve of your pots and their overall resistance.
The 2 common tapers used in guitar wiring (or any audio application) are "linear" and "audio" (aka "logrhythmic").
Whilst linear does exactly what is says on the tin, there are several different logrhythmic curves available on the market and you never really know what you are getting. Using a multimeter, a control knob and a control knob pointer washer (and some simple maths) you can determine what the logrhythmic taper is of your pot.
Simply turn the pot to 50% of it's rotation and measure the resistance at that point. Dividing this over it's overall resistance allows you to calculate the taper curve.

Hey, I just wanted to say that your video series, when taken as a whole, is the best guide to guitar wiring out there. Thanks for being so thorough, clear, and complete. You're a real help to the community.

This was so helpful. I have also enjoyed your various wiring tutorials for different models. Please keep doing these videos as you have time to do so. Good work!

Thanks for watching Joe. Yes, hopefully more regular uploads to come and back to the main theme of guitar/bass wiring circuits.

It would’ve been nice to know if you explain how to put the settings on the multimeter before you started testing the pots

To input and output of the pot no matter which way around. You are just measuring the resistance because that's what a pot is - an adjustable resistor.

What are the uses and preferences for each taper? Thanks!

It’s all really down to personal preference, but generally speaking, the higher the resistance at 50%, the more usable volume sweep you get. Anything between 15%-30% is good. Thanks for watching

Exactly! Why should I care? I assume it's something to do with the logarithmic range of our hearing (dBs are a logarithmic scale) but I'm none the wiser as to the real world impact of these on sound. Happy to be corrected if I missed the key explanation.
