I think many spend too much time geeking out over cameras when the real benefits are getting good audio and good lighting.
You can start with cheap clamp lights that are about $6-$12 apiece and use those to learn a LOT about lighting, how it works, and what works and doesn't. Once you've got some experience with that, THEN go drop some coin on lights.
As I state in this video you can start with this budget GVM-1000D RGB light kit, and not have to mess around with all the other stuff you need - you buy the kits, and you're done.

"How'd you end up way down here?" 😂
LOL Love the outtakes !. Disco is not dead, just took a 40 year break
Let’s Dance!! 😂
And hey! You be FIRST!!! 👏
Thank you! Your review was the only one I found that demonstrated how the lighting actually "looked", how it illuminated something.
Most welcome!
Kevin, I want to thank you for mentioning the $6 aluminum clamp lights at 1:41. That was exactly what I needed to hear.
Wow Neale! THANK YOU!! 😀
Once again, a great revue! You made a comment that made me think back to when I first started out. Yes, these lights are not made as ruggedly as more expensive lights - and by the way, I think for what you get here the price point is AMAZING. Yes - if you drop them, you're probably gonna break something. Here's the thing...learn how NOT TO DROP THEM! If you learn how to take care of your gear when you first start out, you'll likely continue that habit as you buy or work with more expensive lights and other things. Rental houses will LOVE to see you walk in their door. A buddy of mine used to poke fun at me because my gear wasn't all dinged up like his. He said it looked like I never worked because my gear always looked like it just sat on the shelf. I good-naturedly reminded him of the jobs I'd done and then asked him how much he spent in repairs/replacements each year. He got the point real quick. Treat each item of your gear like it was the only one you were ever gonna to have and it'll serve you well for a LONG time!
LOL! True that! Your quote - sooo good! " _Yes - if you drop them, you're probably gonna break something. Here's the thing...learn how NOT TO DROP THEM_ !" 💯
Great review Kevin. Thanks for thinking of us across the pond! 😃
You bet!
Great points about three point 💡
Thanks. I think I made my point. :)
Always appreciate your videos helping my measly channel suck just a little less each day 😀
Welcome! We all suffer from "My video sucked" syndrome. :)
I just recently bought these lights, awesome.
Awesome!
I bought the GVM 700 version (step down). They have crazy amounts of power. More than enough to power my 540 Square foot green screen studio. I was wondering if I should go with the 1000 version but glad I didn't and saved a few bucks. Cool review 👍🏻
Thanks and yes - I did not think they would be that bright for the price. I was surprised.
i should of went with these. i like that you can use them as regular fill and key lights but also use them to add color
Lol, love your over-the-top like and subscribe section at the end. I'm surprised more content creators don't do that, TBH. I mean, can't hurt to ask, right?
Absolutly. Thanks!! :)
I wanna buy this one and improve my videography skills. Thanks for sharing this one.
Thanks very much! 👍

This deserves great views.
You can control each light individualy. That's what the channel dial is for. Yeah, it's a weird naming thing, but that's how I change mine at the photo booth. The way it works if I remember right, you turn on each light in the channel order you want. Key = 0, fill = 1, and hair = 2. Now just switch channels on your app to control each light individually. I can control 12 lights, 0 to 11. Yeah, it makes no sense that channel 0 is channel one. So anyway, it really helps when you have lights up high during a photo booth set up and you don't want to kick people out of the way just sho you can change the overhead hair light.
One of my lights has a defective brightness knob. But the app still controls it, so I put Yellow Grip Tape on it to remind me and crew that's for the hair light.
Thanks @CRP Films!
Huh. Need to check that out - I may have done some stupid here. Funny how GVM said nothing to me about it. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Ok, there been some updates that I was not aware of. I can no longer switch light via the app. Their last update removed that function in app. Now I have to hit the WiFi reset button on the back of the light to twitch lights. Which is pointless as I'm close enough to hit the button, I might as well change the settings with the control knobs. I also notice my channel dial no longer works.
While the loss of being able to switch lights via the app, It ok with me since I only need to control one light that normally is suspended on my high overhead reaching light boom. Which I just now learned on my last photobooth I had issues trying to adjust all lights via the app. I really hate using apps to control things, because if I'm using other apps like Zoom I can't switch out because Zoom will shut down. Every light needs to have a stand alone remote control separate from a phone app.
I downloaded the new GVM II app and learned that your lights are controlled via Bluetooth. Completely different than my WiFi controlled GVM lights. So I guess they are correct that they have no way of switching control of the Bluetooth lights as of yet. They really need to work on this because ideally in small spaces, these lights would work great suspended on an overhead racks, wall mounts or ceiling mounts freeing up space on the floor.
Great info, thanks! I was thinking about getting the 1300 D or the 1500 D kit that just came out. But now that aperture came out with a 60C, which comes with a small soft box and a couple extra buttons, and from more reputable company… I am torn.
Can you offer me any insight as to which set you would recommend out of the three?
I have my own company and do a lot of running gun videography, talking head interviews, and a lot of event highlight videos. Thanks!
Oh and I also already own a Godox VL150, and aputure lantern 360.
Wow these look pretty good!
I think they are for the money. Thanks!
Another great video! Would you recommend these to light a green screen? Do you think the spread would be enough to either light them from the ceiling or from the included stands? I’m planning on using a lastolite panorama frame which I believe is about 13’. Thanks again for all of the great info! Cheers
I don't see why not, as long as you position at least two on each side. Not sure about the falloff at that distance though.
@@BasicFilmmaker Thanks for the response. Overall, would you say the shop lights using LED bulbs would be a better solution for larger green screen setups to spread the light? I’m assuming I could purchase several shop light fixtures for the same price as these. Thanks again.
GVM is a decent mid-range light to get started, in the same class like a Neewer 660
For sure. The Neewer ones look great too.
Good video Kevin hey if you want to send some extra lights my way I’ll take them LOL name your price.
If you'd like to send some cash my way - sure! 👍
What’s your price? $💵
@@BadKarma714 Depends what you want. Are you talking these lights in the video?
Dad, is it internationally available?
I believe so. They are listed on EU for the 800 version not the 1000 version.
Did I miss why you can’t set each light to a different channel and then use the app on different channel settings?
Great video as always Kevin 👍
Good question! Off to check that now. Thanks!
