  • We are fabricating a clapper head for a customers shaper that is missing one. We are using our smaller Milwaukee 10 inch shaper’s clapper as a sample to build. Part one the scope of the project and the how to set up shaper for working on square block.

The shaper was the first machine I learned to use in shop class back in the 1950s. No one else wanted to even learn to use a shaper, they were all hot to get on the lathe. I made a nice little hammer head with the shaper, then got to learn to knurl on the lathe to make the handle. I still have a soft spot for the shaper.

Awesome little shaper, love these machines, they are so "alien" to what's for us younger people "standard". I've been watching some old US declassified footage on machine operations (training and the like), some documentaries from the big factories, soooo many, many machines like this one exist, it's just the tip of the iceberg.
I just found out that there's a type of lathe that's vertical, and all the motor, drive, gearbox etc is buried in the ground. My mind was blown, and now, i want one. :)

surface of the clapper. That way, is the tool digs in, it swings away from the pressure, not digs in more.

    • @KeithFenner

That Shaper is the equivalent of the ALBA 1a you come across a bit here in England...
175 Dollars was a win for a lovely little vintage machine like that...people like em and they're getting a bit thin on the ground now...
I nearly got an early 1a a few months back....
He wanted £250 for it and that was a reasonable price...
The shaper you have here wouldn't be 175 Dollars now I'm sure...👍

Shaper. Haven't used one of those since h.s. They're not used by anyone too much anymore. Sure not like a wood Shaper which are still in common use. I think his tool placement is incorrect. I was always taught to position the tool > 90 deg to the surface you're generating so that the cutting forces tend to push the tool out away from the surface. If the angle were < 90 it would be forced further into the surface, thus increasing the cut depth.
    Beautiful work otherwise.
