The Clapper Part Two

  • We are fabricating a clapper head for a customers shaper that is missing one. We are using our smaller Milwaukee 10 inch shaper’s clapper as a sample to build. Part Two, we adjust tool bits and speed setting to pick up the performance of cut, while we shape the block of cast iron to width. ;{)-------

I found one of these machines in an abandoned warehouse very close to my home. Told a good friend of mine, now passed, who refurb'd it and then used it and taught me all the whys and tip, tricks and no-nos...TY Frank Wrestler, you are missed.

Watching you run the old shaper reminds me of the machine shop that we had where I was employed for about 46 years. My division wasn't the shop, mine was the power plant, boilers, turbines, water treating, steam fitters and everything relating to them. However, I used to spend a lot of time in the shop as one of my good friends was foreman of it. I now wish that I had taken pictures of the original setup.
The shop was pretty much able to do everything. They had a large blacksmith shop, boiler shop, car shop, various lathes, mills, shapers, plainer, welding shop, surface grinder, steam hammers, bolt header, press for removing and replacing car wheels and did all of their locomotive work. The plainer was used to machine the carriage rails for the mill. As I remember they were about 35 to 40 feet long. they had a hole in he building wall so the rails could extend out as they worked on them. I remember the old machinist who ran the shaper. He had a special stool that he used and I swear that he used to sleep as he was making a big cut and would wake up as it finished.
Great memories, just wish that I had recorded it as it is pretty much history now, never to return.

I like the size of your shaper for a home shop. It's not too large, it's not too small, it's JUST RIGHT! I love shaper work. The slo-mo was great. We had a BIG Cincinnati in our High School Machine Shop, back in the '60s, and I used it a lot, along with a Warner-Swasey Turret Lathe. I used the W-S because no one else would, and I could always get a lathe when I needed it. The mills were always busy so I would use the Shaper. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.

@jacktheripped Yep. My first year instructor, Jackie Jackson, was a great teacher and he would take more interest in what you were doing if you used the machines no one else was using. My 2nd year instructor was a newby to teaching. He was technically proficient, but was not a "TEACHER"

@jacktheripped The apprentice program has taught many a good man a trade with which they can make a very good living. There will always be a need for craftsmen who: can make the good water flow in, and the bad water flow out; the electrons flow for lighting, heating and cooling; and who can take a piece of metal stock and make the parts that theoretical engineers design and need turned into real metal parts.
