    quadrogong@gmail.com Great video, this has some of my best tricks & trade secrets🤓
    The most common issue w brimmed hats..
    folks set them down on the shelf w the weight on the brim, and the brim softens and droops. (especially when wet, the weight of the water causes it to droop and when it dries, it dries flat, like the tabletop or shelf its sitting on)
    Even folks who know better do this, we all do it by accident occasionally,.
    I see the symptoms in customers' hats,and they deny it,"Oh! I NEVER lay it on it's brim!"
    We all do, I do. Hats get worn, like shoes..its inevitable, if u wear it, it shows wear.
    "Prevention" is best, keep the hat hung up or upside down. So the brim "floats" in air.
    But..
    If u want to try and fix it, it's not easy, but it's possible...each case is a little different,felt quality is the big factor.
    The bottom line is this..
    store your hats the correct way..upside down on the crown,brim flipped back up.
    or
    hang it up
    on a hook,nail or coat rack,
    w the brim snapped back up
    ..even if u wear the brim snapped down, u store it snapped up.
    Do this all the time, wet or dry, at home, the office, bars and restaurants..
    all the other stuff will take care of itself,
    That's all I do,and my hats look good.
    don't worry how u hold it, or take it off, j
    ust store it correctly
    . it's enough.
    I know, because I never,ever have time to steam my own hats, I never do..its true, maybe 1-2x a year if I'm lucky.
    My brims all look perfect on the ones that I store correctly.
    My green hat and my teal blue one, I wear those two every day, for years and years..
    I store them on a hook in the wall, or upside down on the desk,they are as good as the day I bought them,
    BUT..the ones that I don't really wear look wavy and soft,old..like that lavender hat.
    Why?..
    ..I stack them in piles on shelves,which I know is wrong, but I have no room for them..or I'm lazy.
    The difference is like night and day, big difference.
    Store them right,and u will avoid all this reshaping nonsense.
    We are the ones who screw up our own hats,simply because nobody educated us in basic hat care..
    Learn to store them right and prevent it from getting oft and out of shape,
    it's way easier than trying to fix it by hand.
    If u have a decent hat and can't get results this way,
    u can have a brim steamed by me,free.
    Or re-flanged in our workshop in a more lasting way. Both include a good hat box,
    Blocking in the workshop is for older or totalled hats,when steaming just won't get results anymore.
    .it's way more intensive,the same process they use when they manufacture the hat.
    It's better to learn how to prevent this cycle from starting,
    Buy a good quality fur felt hat with a brim that snaps nicely,raw edged brims are usually,
    (but not always) more prone to floppiness btw
    if it has trouble snapping from the start, it may be shop-worn, or poorly made,don't buy it.
    try another one in the same size, or another style. Snap brim hats should snap.
    be aware that soft felt hats like "lite felt" crush-able wool hats,
    when u add a soft brim to a short,tiny brim,
    it will not snap well,
    some tiny brim hats are meant to stay up,

    That's how my St. Stephens Barbisio is. The style and process for the color makes the hat not very snappy and so when snapped is rather flat. Nice to know its a style and process not a defunct.

      Yes, a reflange. He can reblock the brim to snap
      but most likely the brim will look slightly shorter,
      1/4" or so.
      $45. Plus $14.50 shipping
      I can also do it free with steam and stiffener,no blocks,just $14.50, results are just not as good, blocking it is like remanufacturing the brim
      Up to u! Kev

    Another awesome video! Thanks so much for sharing. Any tips on how to do the same for a Panama hat? I've heard using an iron and damp cloth but can a steamer be used? Thanks!

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 8 lety +1

      +DavesTrumpet exactly the same method for straws, panama will require some stiffening first, without that, u won't get any results. It's that hard shell that u put on the hat that holds it in place, u soften it w steam,letting it cool into place..same exact method for panama hats, but the stiffener is essential.u may need a bit more with straw.
      btw
      no water, never..
      no ironing, u can use an iron for something flat, flat brims are rare,I've never had a single instance where Ive used one for hat shaping,it comes in handy for thing like hat bands..
      nope, no iron, use steam from an iron, get the area teamed up and then shape it as it cools into place..holding it as it cools. straws are the same, just tougher, a lot tougher,and without the spray,forget it...u do more damage than good, don't even attempt to steam without stiffening a straw, unless the hat is already stiff, then u can skip that step.

    • @DavesTrumpet
      @DavesTrumpet Před 8 lety

      +quadrogong1111 Makes a lot of sense. I've noticed on some of my straws that they get sticky when you steam them (obviously coated) and others don't. Time for me to get some hair spray!!!! Thanks again!

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 8 lety

      +DavesTrumpet yeah, get it stiff, let it dry, then steam...don't touch the wet straw, let it air dry or use a fan, try not to get too many fingerprints,and keep the wet areas off the tabletop.
      Don't use "Aqua Net" brand and use the ultra super hold,strongest stuff they have,only aerosol cans..all hats have this coating, straw or felt,
      it's called "sizing", it comes in can from a company called Manhatco in NYC, but the hair spray is cheaper and easier to get in a rush, and for jobs like shaping hats by hand, it works quite well,with almost no recognizable difference.
      Most of it depends on spraying evenly, not too gloppy or drippy, use light coats..if u have decent technique, both products will look and feel the same

      pete wright My method was steaming the front brim, and then leave the back of the hat hanging off the ledge of a table with the front brim on the surface of the table and something heavy placed onto the front brim to hold it, then use a chair and lean it against the back of the hat to make sure you get that extra curve. Leave it for an hour or so and it worked for me.

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 3 lety

      I’m not exactly sure what you’re dealing with, but I doubt it. I’d just return it, get a refund. even on a first grade quality hat that’s not an easy job w just steam, it would require a total,reflanging of the brim by a hatmaker.. there are a lot of hats online that look good in photos but when u get them home, the brim doesn’t snap or lay straight, usually because many steps are skipped,and it can be a fit issue too. But most of the time, it’s just not a snap brim, like in your case. Definitely not. Not even in the best case scenario
      I can help talk u through a sale if u want to find a good half price hat on JJ hat centers back room sale, u can find a $200 hat for $100. ...or a $175 hat for $87.50 etc
