- Eldrick Jacobs of Flint & Port Hat Co. walks us through how he repairs a tattered, 70-year-old Resistol hat, that has been passed down three generations while maintaining its character. The process includes cleaning the felt, re-blocking the hat to fit the client's head, trimming the brim, and re-crowning the hat to its original shape. Although there is a hole in the crown of the hat, the client opted for the hole to be preserved, to carry on the story of the hat and keep the memory of its previous wearers. By restoring this hat, the hat is being made to last another 70 years or so, with minimal maintenance needed.

Restoring A Tattered 70 Year Old Heirloom Hat | Refurbished | Insider - Zábava
As a mechanic, the Pusher Downer is now my new favorite tool name
Came here looking for that comment. Lol
You know he made that up hahah
I use a 3/8 wobble when I have to access tight spaces with a socket. 😂
Nice to see this repaired and not just thrown away but mostly it was nice to see the skills of a true professional at work.
This guy needs a CZcams channel specifically for hat restoration and repair. I'd watch it.
I as well
I would love to follow this .! So interesting! .. a. LOT OF HATS I could restore.
Same!
Excellent flow in the video. Taught very well. The speaking was very clear and concise with not a lot if rambling on. This young man defined what he was doing, how he was doing it and what he was using to achieve the goal. I enjoy the no-nonsense approach to learning from such wonderful artisans as this milliner. Thank you for being a super resource to help me as I work to restore customers hats.
Wow ur a bloody magician! You maintained just the right patina while the hat looks nice and fresh again. That's a 300$ piece now! And I love how chunky your sweatband is - will indeed provide some structural integrity as you said! Simply awesome job😎‼️
And you're a great narrator as well btw!
Hey guys who were ignorant, the client wanted the hole.
yeah they clearly said so i dont know why everyones questioning it! i personally like the hole too
And even after the restoration, the hole adds character. I like it
Love the hole or buy a new one.
hello , beautiful , meticulous work but i would have left the brim the same.........great job , great share . thank you , for sharing.........🥰🥰🥰🥰.....
Was looking forward to seeing how you mend that hole 😔
I didn't know about how Rubbing Alcohol or denatured Alcohol helps restore Fur Felt. I'm sure that was expensive to do yet,it looks like a very cool Hat now. I can tell you love Hats, thank you!
Wow, beautiful restoration. I’m sure the owner was thrilled!!
Thank you for the update, Insider..!! Great work..!! 👍
Nice work. Great craftsmanship!!
“Pusher downer”! 😂 ❤
i’m jealous i got a stetson that looks like that and i always get compliments on it. super cool
I love this artistry! I wonder how much you can resize a hat!
Excellent Job! .. I d like to learn to do this .
Hats need a comeback, I'm trynna upgrade from my baseball cap, but I would look goofy out there in the streets with a cowboy hat.
Confidence my friend. That will make or break u.
Cowboy hats aren't goofy. If you like it, wear it.
Now I’m kind of curious to know how the hole was formed. I would’ve asked for it to be mended.
Taking the hat off and on pulling in the crown tip wears a hole. Your supposed to use the brim and lift.
@@heyitsjunior7870 good to know
I thought the guy got shot
Beautiful work!
Beautifully done!
Everyone needs a good pusher downer! Great work, sir!
You are another excellent source insight in the hat world!!!
Nicely done . Thank you for your time
How do you stiffen a felt hat ?
The brim is foppy . I want it flat..
Where are you located I have some hat's I would like to get done
What a trade! You have a website to send hats?
Does pulling on the brim like he does when putting the hat on the “head” damage the hat in any way
Great job! That was awesome to watch.
Super cool! I love that old hat!
Fantastic skills, great job 👍
I wanted to know how the hole would be fixed but sadly....
I was really liking the look of the (open crown) hat until he pinched the crown & created a tear drop and made it look like 99.999% of every other hat out there. I literally yell “NOOO” at the screen.
I rarely see anyone wear a Traditional Hat like this One in fact almost never cause most People are scared to be American Individuals anymore. Be brave and wear what you like!
Outstanding.
Wow amazing work!
so the hole?
Majestic!!
Great skill, great work!
How much does it cost for what you just did to that hat??
Cost me around $50 to reblock and shape after a bull stomped it. Will need a sweatband next season amd for a better quality band it runs around $70. That's at my local hat shop
I would assume that most Hatters would want $250.00 for that Service especially for the amount of Time he spent on bringing it back to Life again. You gotta admit the Hatter did a fantastic job on it. It shines now!
Love this.
Amazing
Need to send my father's hat to him...
Waiting for the hat to scream "Griffindor" 😂legit looks like a sorting hat
AMAZING...........
❤
is there any way to fix a hole in a western style hat?
That was cool…I agree this guy needs a you tube
Pretty amazing revival.
Awsome
Damn I wanted to see the client’s reaction
Can a cracked up leather hat be fixed and restored?
Only clicked on this to message, I luv yr Foret accent
a "pusher-downer" is what this jawn is called
Well done sir
Is that hole from a gun shot??
Very very nice good job
Neat video, but why wasn't the hole fixed?
Owner took a headshot??
This was nice to watch but I felt like he trimmed off a little too much of the brim it looked very short to me. Also I thought he might stain the hat's felt to make it more lively
I wonder, what was the story behind the hat? My imagination is all over the place.
Cutting the brim in my opinion was super unnecessary
Black Excellence ✊🏽
Heck yeah bloody awesome cheers
I suddenly want a nice hat. Algorithm!!!
He's a master in 3+ years? Ok great.
Hole HaT.
I never understood how you can get material clean without washing it, the years of dirt and sweat is impregnated throughout the material. When you wash your clothes in a washing machine you see how dirty the water is.
When I send my suit to the dry cleaners and they say they just spot clean a suit I know that my sweat and dirt is not being removed.
If there's something I don't understand please explain.
Where's this guy's accent from?
Three
What about the hole?
That Hole took a long Time to happen plus it gives the Hat Character for sure. I would be proud to wear that Hat. Distressed Hats are very fashionable now too.
Wants to maintain the character it gained over the years, 20 seconds later destroys all character it gain over the years... Nice one... Really nice.
Well, "character" is an abstract term that means different things to the eye of the beholder.
The hat had obviously gone through a lot of abuse via negligence. It had probably been smushed in a closet or drawer for decades, and thus looked more like a lump of felt rather than anything like it's original form.
The artisan and/or client obviously thought the the "character" of the hat was... the patina of the felt, the outer-band, and the hole (probably created by grabbing the hat by the crown; though I think I speak for everyone when I say we all hope it's actually from a bullet hole that just missed the head.)
The lumpy shape it had gotten, from being stuffed wherever it was, was obviously not an important part of its character, and perhaps it might not even be possible to determine what shape it originally was. (Though usually the shape of the patina lets you know.) (UPDATE: The video synopsis says it was restored to its original shape.)
I don't think him changing the shape is a big deal, because the thing about a good felt hat is that the shape is changeable. So the next generation that gets the hat can change the shape again. The thing that can't be changed however, was the brim size. Him cutting so much of that off was the only thing in his process that made me sad.
But, it's not my hat. It belongs to the descendant of the original owner.
And what is life about, if not reshaping what the past has given us into something that fits us?
Loved it until the crown was shaped... now I just like it
Anything but slytherin
Then, better be... GRYFFINDOR!
I'm very uncomfortable w the fact that he used fabric scissors to cut the sandpaper. Nope. Just. Nope.
Apparently you're able to sharpen scissors by cutting sandpaper so it might not be as bad as you think.
Same
Whine and snivel
He sees the sweat band by hand?there are def machines for that. That's so much work, love a good craftsmanship though
