  • The Try Guys are going to die! ....someday. And while that might be alarming, relax, so will you. It's normal! The Try Guys did take things a step further though, enlisting the help of a medical team and series of tests to determine not only who has the healthiest lifestyle, but to predict who will die first and live the longest. I've got to say, I have some very mixed feelings about these types of test, as there are so many variables in what leads to a long and healthy life that a test simply doesn't take into consideration, but it's a fun exercise to explore nonetheless. Today we hit on a bunch of subjects, such as Ned Fulmer having a baby with his wife and becoming a dad, Keith Habersberger's diet after eating the whole menu, Eugene Lee Yang's alcohol intake, and Zach Kornfeld's STI concerns, among many other things. Cancer risk, moderate intensity exercise, blood pressure, BRCA1, sleep, stress, and so much more all in today's video!
    I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

They always take it basically as soon as I sit down, haven’t asked me about mu caffeine intake, and not only are staring at me while taking it but usually threatening that they’ll have to keep retaking it until they see a number they like. And literally it’s always high and has been for over a decade but they never DO ANYTHING about it! I’m always like, “what is the point if you’re just going to shame me for having high numbers but not actually do anything about it?”

      A good nurse will ALWAYS wait until you've sat for at least 5 minutes to take your blood pressure because even something as simple as walking to the patient room can raise your BP. If it's high after the first read, you always wait at least 20 seconds and then can take it again. Asking caffeine intake is a good question to ask too, because it makes for small talk and gives any tellers to a cause for a raise in BP. A simple answer can prevent panic when the BP is high.
      IF they can't get the BP after 2 tries, either they don't know what they are doing and shouldn't be taking it, or you are basically dead.

      I once had a male Doctor who shared an office with a female doctor. By chance he hadn't been available when I went in for regular check ups in a while, so I'ld had my blood pressure taken by her several times in a row. When I did get to see him again, he took my blood pressure, looked at my chart, and said "Oh, I see your blood pressure is lower when being taken by another woman." In reality I had been running late that day, so I ran. Then I got in, and had my check up less than 5 minutes after getting there!

  • @bjoernsk85
    @bjoernsk85 Před 2 lety +29

    The sleep thing is quite easy to estimate: Let's assume that person A is sleeping 7 hours each day and person B is sleeping 6 hours each day. That means that B is awake for 5.8% (18/17 awake hours each day) more than A. That gives us roughly 5 years more awake for person B. So the question is, does sleeping for 6 hours as compared to 7 shorten your life by more or less than 5 years?
    But of course the only thing that matters is that you sleep what you need to to function and feel good, because if your don't, then it doesn't matter anyway. And that counts for both sleeping too much and too little.

    9:36 Thank you for saying this! I recently got fitted for a scoliosis brace and, this was my second appointment, they asked if I did drugs, drank, felt depressed/suicidal and if I felt safe at home. I am 14 mind you and if I didn't feel safe at home I wouldn't tell the doctor with my mom sitting right next to me. I do feel safe at home and I have amazing parents but it made me think, what if a kid felt in danger at their house but had to lie. Parents should never be in the room for those questions, no matter what.

    Lynch syndrome runs in my family. Which gives you a wildly high chance of developing colon (and a few other) cancers. Like the risk is 1/3 before 70, rather than the typical 1/30. When my brother was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 28, we got lots of well meaning diet advice...but when your risk is that significant from your genetics, diet won't push the needle that far!! lol. My brother has completely eliminated processed meats from his diet, but his risk of recurrence is still pretty high. Not saying good diet and exercise aren't going to do something, they totally will. Interestingly, good diet and exercise can help make chemo more bareable and potentially even more effective.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 Před 2 lety +9

      I've always considered "good stress / bad stress" rather the same as "good pain / bad pain"...
      Look, you're GOING to get dinged up in life... AND just the same from time to time, you're going to be nervous, anxious, and/or excited about things for tomorrow, an hour from "now", etc... be it a week or a year...
      Good pains are those pains that alert us to damage or infection, sometimes they just hurt enough (like touching a hot door knob) to warn us away from things that might be much MUCH worse... Those are good for us. They tell us when something's wrong, and usually help us figure out WHAT is wrong, so we can do something about it... fix it or avoid it entirely...
      Same with stress. You SHOULD be excited and nervous about the first time you get to try and ride a "real" grown up motorcycle... It's DANGEROUS, and it takes skill. Even that your first ride is only in first gear at about 5 mph (so a brisk jogging pace) around a parking lot... It's a BIG, real, "grown up" motorcycle that can KILL you very quickly. It should be respected... and that should make you nervous... You SHOULD be at least a little nervous going into the room to take a test for a job or to get a degree... It's normal. You've studied, but you're always going to worry just a little bit about whether you studied well enough, long enough, covered enough of the material... That's good stress, and when the "task at hand" is done, it goes away...
      Bad pains are chronic... life long torments that you can't get rid of. They don't help you fix anything, either because there's nothing to fix or because whatever's "wrong" simply can't be fixed... They just steadily tear you down.
      Likewise, bad stress is a chronic level of torment. it's constantly dreading something you know you have to face... like going home to someone toxic in your family or going to work with an "office bully" but having no good choice about dealing with the problem. You need the job. You NEED a home, so you have to deal with it, but... well... there's just that torment every day... all the time... AND just like the chronic "bad pain", it tears you down because there is NO fixing it.
      A challenge should make you excited... nervous... even terrified... But face it, and you get through it. Usually, it turns out easier than you'd expected, because Fear makes things seem bigger than they really are. That's how it works. BUT once you've gotten through it, and learned that it's easier than you thought, that's the reward. Then you can learn that you can grow and face more challenges... You won't always "win" exactly, but so long as you can survive them, you can learn something and grow from it. It only makes you stronger and better... and the nervous excitement, anxiety, fear, etc... the stress... that goes away. ;o)

    The great struggle of being human is being aware of our mortality, but not knowing how long we have. I just turned 39. My parents are both alive and incredibly healthy in their mid-70s. Relatives on both sides live well into their 80s or 90s. So, genetically, I might not be halfway through yet. But I have bad habits and I have been chronically stressed most of my life as well as suffering a lot of mental health issues. I happen to think stress is probably our biggest killer. I also have no health insurance so I don’t get preventative care. So, if I had a stroke or developed diabetes, or a silent cancer, it wouldn’t be THAT surprising. It really wouldn’t be unfair if I dropped within the next decade.
    I don’t have kids, so I really don’t care when I die. But if I KNEW when, I would live differently.
    Do I have forty years left? Ok. I need to plan for that. Did my final decade countdown already start? Alright, I need to stop putting off things I want to do. Am I getting hit by a bus tomorrow? Well, forget getting up for work, I’m gonna stay up and binge my favorite show.
    We are constantly pulled between, live every day like it’s your last and make sure to plan for your future. There is a healthy balance to strike where you make time to live life without living it so hard that you have no retirement. But striking that balance is HARD.

      You should get yourself a councellor/mentor. For me personally I have one appointed to me for now as an offer due to my autism.
      First focus on stress identification, then reduction. Then move on to stability and forming/breaking down habits.
      Maybe supplement with some Melatonin to help you sleep. (obv. contact your doctor).

You are also more susceptible to psychological illnesses that can be caused by the effects of PTSD (co- morbidities) if your not in school or college or anything or just want to learn more, an easy way is the book "The Body Keeps The Score". Also it is true that children are more resilient to illnesses. That does not mean that they can't get them it just means they are less likely and/or the effects will be prolonged and sudden.

      I'm not so sure I'm convinced that posture and circumstance is then going to actually GIVE an accurate BP reading, if I'm never (normally) sitting like that... or alone and otherwise unoccupied, for the matter.
      SO an accurate "real world example" might not have anything to do with quite that position or circumstance. ;o)

    Hey Doctor Mike, I have a question for you. When you go to a doctor's office, and you're sitting with a nurse and they're asking you questions about you health history and habits, and they get to questions like "how often do you drink alcohol?" And the answers are not at all, not often, regularly, daily, etc. Is there a standard criteria to determine the answer for that? Or is it subjective based upon the nurses own interruptions? I ask because I usually answer that I have one drink every 3-6 months, and am not likely to finish it. I have had some nurses, most nurses, checkmark the "not often" box...but I had one that checked the "regularly" box once. I thought it odd because I honestly wouldn't have thought 1/2 to one full drink every few months or so was really that bad or likely to have much, or any, negative effect on my health, and wouldn't really be considered "regular." It just kind of stuck with me, especially since it stood out from the other times I had watched nurses filling out my answers on their computer screen. So I am curious what is the medical standard to be considered a regular drinker? Or is there one?

    • @jazz_meh
      @jazz_meh Před 2 lety +15

      Blood pressure is how much force the liquids in your blood vessels exert on the blood vessels. You can almost think of it like water pressure for pipes (kind of)
      Slowing your breathing can help lower your heart rate (because essentially you’re helping all of your body slow down), but it wouldn’t do much for your blood pressure.
      Things that help lower your blood pressure (or maintain it at a healthy level) is stuff like making sure you dont eat too much salt, staying hydrated, making sure your cholesterol levels are low, eating nutritious food, etc
      Like Dr Mike said, there are lots of diseases that can be prevented by developing healthy lifestyle habits

      @@samsationalpavids6293 Okay, so here's a little story of me getting my blood pressure tested:
      Back then I was barely a teen, around 12? And I have to attend an annual body check. I've always been a little chubby, so I get scared rverytime I go here. When I reached 12, they started testing for blood sugar level and blood pressure instead of just the simple weight, height and sensory tests they did. So when I went in, I was so nervous and since I noticed when I try to withhold breathing, my hearts seems to slow down, so lil' ol' me figured it would probably lower my blood pressure. NOPE, for like, the first 2 times they tested I still have high blood pressure. So the doctors got worried that a child like me got high blood pressure- but the 3rd time I barely passed as normal so they told me to probably do more exercise and I can probably get back to normal the next year I check again.
      Years past by, everytime I go to test my blood pressure, this cycle of events happen again and again to the point that I just accepted my fate of having borderline high blood pressure(since my dad have high blood pressure aswell). But my parents told me, last year before getting the vaccine, that they worry my blood pressure might increase side effects. So I started testing my blood pressure for 2 weeks before getting the actual vaccine. I searched up how to lower blood pressure- and the internet, funnily enough, have a lot of tips to lower blood pressure quickly to pass body checks. I saw that one of those tips were to slow down breathing, and try to breath deeper. So I just- sort of hoped for the best, didn't hold my breath and tried breathing slower. About an hour before testing, drink a lot of water, and don't move around too much.
      Turns out, it's either those tips work really well or my borderline high blood pressure was caused by the not breathing ordeal. My blood pressure in those 2 weeks were a good margin away from the line.
      In conclusion, stay (really) hydrated and breathe deeper and slower should keep your blood pressure temporarily lower. But in the long term, don't consume too much sodium(liquid vs salt), alcohol and caffeine should be limited and exercising defo helps.

      @@artemisia5663 I mean it's an interesting story but I'm a trained scuba diver, this means that I have a habit where if I get stressed I take slow, shallow breaths, they beat this habit into you so that if something happens underwater you don't take big gulps of air and drain your air tank. Becouse of this I'm wondering if this habit has some effect on the heart, less than about blood pressure. But still very interesting to hear that.

      @@samsationalpavids6293 I'd say it depends on your physiology. If high blood pressure is caused by stress/anxiety your breathing techniques could help, I imagine. It is also part of therapy to control your breath and relax your muscles consciously in that case.(we call it "autogenes Training" in German). Although you actually train to take deeeeeep and slow breaths. But I think the control aspect is what makes is effective, maybe?
      However, there's also a form of high blood pressure that's just physically there and people don't even notice their blood pressure going up. I had a very active and fit boss once who suffered from this. They need to control their blood pressure manually every few hours just in case.
      Anyway, I think your technique might be good for you heart since it keeps it from being strain. Maybe you even transport more oxygen because of that breathing technique? Like athletes that work out in the mountains to increase their blood oxygen. But that's just my assumption, don't forget to do your adult check-up after 30 to see how your lifestyle and body work together.

    People often like to groan about how their job is "killing" them. Tragically, for some groups of people in the U.S., that statement appears to be true new studies by by Harvard researchers at Harvard and Stanford has quantified just how much a stressful workplace may be shaving off life spans. It suggests that the amount of life lost to stress varies significantly for people of different races, educational levels and genders, and ranges up to nearly three years of life lost for some groups.
    STRESS TAKES 33 YEARS OFF YOUR LIFE
    Average human life span 80 years
    80-33=47 years
    And even if we make it through life with few stressors, this incremental decline sets the maximum life span for humans at somewhere between 120 and 150 years.
    150-33= 117 years
    Genetics is the massive factor to life span

      I quit my last job because I had that epiphany, pulled over on the highway having my second panic attack since starting there. There were many other factors, but sitting there sobbing and realizing that lol this probably isn't healthy made me finish the drive just to resign in person. 100% I would have had (more) visible health affects (or done something drastic) if I had "toughed it out" another few months. If your job LITERALLY makes you consider driving into a tree... maybe find another job. It sucks finding employment, but it is NOT worth it at that point.

    When I was in a Psych hospital, they'd always take us outside the group room to check our heart rate. Of course there was a window behind us where they could see what we where doing. Each time if they saw you moved or fidget, they'd start all over. If it continued, they'd give you a small pill for anxiety, let you go sit back in the room, and come back to check your blood last.
