I personally don't agree. I can't remember a single time that she did anything while we were with her. Everytime she would come back and say she did this, this and this I didn't believe because she'd immediately lose a fight with someone and act all pathetic and whiny. Celaena/Aelin always felt like a kid who told you she could do a trick on a skateboard then couldn't replicate it while you watched. Perfect example is in The Assassin's Blade. She yells at the other assassins for, rightfully, leaving the body of her mentor. She storms out to get the body herself. Then it cuts to 3 months later. All we get is her offhandedly saying she got the body. How? How in the magical frick frack did a 16 year old, carry the dead weight of a grown man out of a castle? How do you where his body was? And how did you do this with the castle swarming with guards and hunting for the other assassin who just murdered someone in the castle? We don't get an explanation. Therefore, it just piles onto the ever growing list of things she claims but never backs up.

One thing about throne of glass: you do have valid criticisms about the fact that it’s a fantasy romance and it does focus on the romance a lot. However, her being “Oh so pretty and oh so tiny” is not a thing in it. In her POV she mentions that she’s quite average looking and she’s also supposed to be pretty tall. I think the only reason why she’s skinny (at least in the first book) was because she had just been released from slavery

1.) She used cosmetics to improve her looks. 2.) When describing Lysandra, Manon, and Ansel, she was ordinary compared to them. 3.) When she was dancing with the ballerinas, she stood out because she was bulkier and taller. Soooo I agree. People jump to conclusions without actually reading the series. Which is sad.

Although to be fair, the previous few sentences also describe her eyes and hair in vivid detail and states that she was "a girl of former beauty" so I think that's where most of the mix up is coming from.

The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa was my favorite and I know a lot of people's favorite Fey series. I haven't read it in like 8 years but when I look back I don't have the feeling of cringe that I feel with other YA's from that time. I loved them all then but this one had a different feeling. The first one is okay but the series kept getting better. There is a love triangle but I don't hate it and I felt like the main girl was built up really well through the rest of the series leading up to war. Like I said, I read this when I was younger so I can't defended with my whole heart. But I think it's worth a try.

As a 5 foot nothing, 100lbs woman, I love the trope of having tiny little women being super strong because I was also a jockey so I was actually really damn strong compared to pretty much anyone who never works out. I am super small, but every part of me during that time of my life was muscle. I would ride 15-20 head of horse every day, 6 days a week, from 4am until noon. I cannot tell you how deeply it bothered me that no one saw me as strong. Same thing for the male riders, those guys are unbelievable strong. Their hands are so damn bulky from the muscle they develop from holding the reins of a 1,000lbs animal pulling against them but because they are under 5 foot tall, other men think they are fight them and win, and after seeing a lot of bar fights, I can tell you that a professional athlete standing 4'10 is going to beat the shit out of the 6 foot dude with a beer belly. I don't hate the trope for two main reasons, one, because it makes me feel represented and two, because in real life it is not a trope. A small, professional female athlete is rarely viewed as strong. It is assumed that an average man could still beat them in a fight due to size alone. Think of Ronda Rousey, woman is one of the best fighters in the world and she gets that shit all the time. She is actually not very big, she weighs 135lbs and a lot of people say that a big man without training would be able to take her on...it is so incredibly wrong, insulting, and sexist.
I get why the trope is hated in books, because the opposing force of society expecting women to be slim and small to be attractive and you wouldn't want your main female character to be unattractive right? But female athletes like Rousey or female jockeys might be thin, but not in the traditional feminine attractive way. Your stomach goes in, your legs and arms are disproportionately large, you have small breasts, etc. I completely disagree with having physically strong female characters being turned into this masculine ideal, exceptionally large, hulking, broad, etc. To do so is to say that only females who are able to closely mimic the masculine version of strength could ever possibly be strong. That is not true in real life and it is an insult to female athletes who have heard that all of their lives. It hurts to spend your entire life working your body to the bone to hear someone imply that because you are small you could be beaten by a man no matter what you do. You are told your body is unattractive because of the muscle development, and you are told your body is weak because of your gender. I get the rational for rejecting the small female fighter in the name of feminism, but it is extremely misguided. Just write small female warriors with bodies like Ronda Rousey, thin, yes, but incredibly muscular.

Examples, Aelin and the 'candies'. WE ARE NOT TRAINING TO BE ASSASSINS. And you cannot expect the character to be flawless when a series starts. If she is perfect and her relationships are out of a fairytale(at the beginning ),what's the point in reading it? It's completely okay to not like a book or critique it ,but without trying to take the minor flaws in the first book of a series and exxagerating it to no end ,it'll be better to be open minded and just except the fact that nothing is perfect. (+you cant read the first two books in series and and tell that it's trash. As I said before,if she is all so perfect at the beginning no one would want to read it. :)

The worst YA book I've read because of booktube is Firstlife by Gena Showalter. It's the first book of a trilogy, but I didn't continue the series. Everything about it was pretty bad: the writing was cringy, the characters were obnoxious, the romance was just yuck, the plot was just okay. However, the premise was great, which makes the bad execution even more frustrating. Basically, people discovered that there's actually an afterlife, and in that afterlife there are two realms that fight each other. Before you die you have to choose one realm Troika or Myriad. Of course, the main character is a "special girl" that both sides want to recruit, it was explained why they wanted her, but the significance of the concept that made her special was lost on me. Also, I did get the duality of the realms, but at no point was I ever convinced that Myriad is a good choice, the only positive aspect of that realm are glow-in-the-dark turtles. It was also never explained why they fight each other.

as a shadowhunters chronicles fan, I like to forget that the whole incest part of the mortal instruments happened. just 'cause someone likes the shadowhunters doesn't mean they support incest lol . but the other trilogies that take place in the world are actually pretty good!

I haven't read all the books you've mentioned here but I can definitely agree about those that I have read! Now I'm curious to know what you'd say about a YA fantasy novel that I wrote. It doesn't have any tropes you seem to dislike, but it's self-published, so you probably never will! Anyway, I did enjoy this video 😊

Little, Big by John Crowley. Try that for a fae book. Its adult fantasy and is not romance the way you seem to hate. I dont want to hype it up or explain it even. I do absolutely love it.

Fist I enjoy most YA. I don’t mind trashing and overly dramatic angst. But I stopped reading those City of Bones books for the exact same reason!! I was like that was soooooooooo unnecessary. And back back in the day when I was looking for more YA books to read, after gorging myself on post apocalyptic teen melodramas, I came across Throne of Glass. Yeah the assassin thing and the love triangle didn’t work for me. And when I hear someone say it gets better around the 4-5 book. Uugg no I’m out. It should be good after the 4-5 chapter!

I don't know too many dragon books but one I enjoyed (as far as I read it) was a series by Naomi Novik.
Eventually, I couldn't be bothered to keep up anymore because the series had a lot of books but I enjoyed the first few.
    What about you guys?

No offense ,I'm just gonna tell u something...
TOG - I also didn't like the 1st book so much but the novella it had and the last two books of this series are so good.. I love the ending and there are going to be many other characters who will came later and I think u would have liked their chemistry ..IDK but I love the series as a whole but not the first book. I get it why u didn't like it tho..
BTW, I totally agree with u on Mara Dyer trilogy and Fangirl.

I've read the "Fallen" series because it was recommended to me and I wound up getting reviewing everything I've ever written to make sure I didn't make all the same mistakes.
I wouldn't even recommend them, but if you want to read them, make sure to protect your brain cells from this "Twilight" rip off

I hate to say it because I'm guilty of reading almost all of Cassandra Clare's books, but I have to agree that the whole Jace and Clary being related was so unnecessary and gross after finding out about Cassandra Clare's fanfics about incest

Fangirl's MC was the first. I couldn't stand her. I loved Everything, Everything until the twist. I would still say I kind of liked it, but there could've been a lot more to be explored with the mom.

Okay I have mixed feelings. I definitely didn’t get the hype about Fangirl. It was really slow and awkward for no reason. But I loved Everything Everything! The plot and writing style was so unique and I didn’t feel as though she was giving her life up for Oli. I felt like she was realizing that she didn’t actually enjoy her life and thus cared less about risking it. Dimple and Rishi I’m torn. Definitely not my favorite but I didn’t dislike it.

Also I absolutely loved Throne of Glass. I didn’t read the rest of the series but I have heard it changes quite a bit. I get that she wasn’t a super intense assassin but I feel like that was kind of the point. They made it quite clear that she wasn’t cruel because that was supposed to be the complexity of her character. Very physically capable, but still witty and kind.

The throne of glass gets bigger and bigger from the 3rd book.....the world building is massive..like really massive...the first and second books have a very small scope n it doesn't include much...the assassin thing was also not good in 1st n 2nd books...but from the 3rd one..it's just massive..you just need some patience

When the author herself says that the book is not YA, I tend to believe it. So no, ToG should not be on this list. Because SJM has said numerous times that she does not write YA and her books are not meant for YA audiences.

I don't have any YA that I can think of off the top my head to share that I hate, but you might want to try the Temraire series by Naomi Novik. I don't think you're a fan of her other books, but this one is an alternate history set during the Napoleonic wars where dragons exists and they use them in the war. A navy captain and crew infiltrate a French and steal the dragon they were bringing to China. Our main human character accidentally bonds with the dragon when it hatches.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr is one of the only AMAZING Fae books I've liked read it if you get the chance, very interesting world building and the the series only grows and adds dimensions to the lore that I don't think are typical for other Fae YA series.
