  • This is the start of my new reading vlog series... I'm reading popular books for the first time to see if they are worth the hype! I'm starting with Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas! It's a very popular YA Fantasy book that's really hyped everywhere on booktube (and Goodreads!) so I decided to give it a shot!

For anyone that might have missed it. I didn't really like ACOTAR but after everyone said book 2 was better I read ACOMAF. I really liked it (even though it had some weaknesses) it was so much better.
That's why even though I had heard the first 2 books in this series weren't the best, I'm still open to continuing. I'm not trying to torture myself for fun :)

No spoilers I promise. I read the first book and was like meh. Second book was much better. Third book Rowan happened. Fourth book jaw dropped. Fifth book omg. Just finishing Tower of Dawn now and loving it. Kingdom of Ash is waiting on my bookshelf. Seriously, it gets so much better. I personally think that Sarah J. Mass has a thing for powerful couples (nothing wrong with that) and I think that I like Feyre and Rhysand more. Btw, cringy sex bits warning, you're not gonna like those. I enjoy them but just heads up.

I didn't read the serie myself, but I guess it would be a waste of time. On your bookshelf you've so much more books that can be vlogged like this. Why don't read the secon rainbow shelf and vlogged it for us? It would be a variety of genres, and it would keep things interesting.

My main problems were that Celaena was half a mary sue half actually ok character and they never left the castle. Really? Sarah J Maas made a whole fantasy world around the characters and they stayed in one place. If the second book wouldn't have ended in Celaena going to Wendlyn I wouldn't have continued the series.

For me, the problem I had with Throne of Glass was the tone of the book. You have a "hardened assassin" in a medieval fantasy setting who has the personality and emotional capacity of a modern YA contemporary character. It makes the entire book feel unbalanced and cringey.

I just started reading Throne of Glass recently and my reaction to was similar. I'm not really a critical reader and I've like a fair number of bad books, but so far from what I've read of this one I've just been really frustrated with it. I think I would have been less bothered if her flaws (like her vanity) were actually presented as flaws. Or if early on it actually showed her skills-- like opening with her escape attempt instead of mentioning it briefly. I'm still working on reading it because I really wanted to like it and I went into it really hopeful, but it's been a hard process.

Believe it or not, Celaena get even more insufferable as the series goes on. I first read the series in 2015 and by book 3 I was done with it but kept reading out of obligation. I was also not a very observant reader back then so I missed all the foreshadowing. While I'd be curious to hear your thoughts, I'd honestly say only continue to read them if you want to hate-read cause otherwise it's not worth the time or energy, especially if you didn't like the characters already. Also I've always read Chaol as Kale but I have no idea if that's right or not. Also also love the bunny ears headband!

this series is so white, cis, straight and cliché for me. the plot is okay till book 3, after this one is kinda messy, the characters change abruptly to serve the plot and keep the story going. i think the fandom that the author gathered through the years is very loyal to her, they close their eyes to every problematic or sloppy point of the series due to their passion/obsession with the characters/worldbuilding and nostalgia feeling. well, that's my opinion, i loved this series at the beginning, but, fortunately, opened my eyes and used my reason instead of my emotion. :/

YES. You absolutely have to continue. I have a love-hate relationship with this series, too. Though yours seem more like a hate-meh-hate relationship. This video made me laugh so hard!
I have to say though, Heir of Fire really got to me and I'll probably continue with this series just because I like re-reading it. But Throne of Glass, oh it made me roll my eyes so much. Celaena's character was made to be so whiny, pompous and childish. It gets better though, you get used to her like you would an annoying best friend, she grows on you.
    Eventually.
Give or take 3 books in.
The writing also irritated me because it felt like the author wanted to include everything she loved in life into it (aka clothes, chocolates, books.) It's a bit much. It is supposed to be an assassin book after all. A lot of it felt out of line from the plot, unnecessary but included for the writer's whims. And please tell me that I'm not the only one who noticed the gazillion exclamation points in this book. I don't think you need that many exclamation points to get emotions across.
I've pretty much rolled my eyes endlessly reading through this series. Something about her writing just cringes the heck out of me. I probably get exhausted reading her books, not for their sheer volume, but from tireless eye rolling. HOWEVER, yes there is a however, the plot does get good. Like REALLY good that it will make you want to stick it out just to find out what happens. So it's worth to give it a go.
Plus even if you hate it Emily, it would be so fun watching you cringe your way through this series. I, for one, will be tremendously entertained. :D

same! XD this has always been one of my favourite series to the point i've re-read it 3 times. except like, each time id see foreshadowing and enjoy some things more, i also found a lot of flaws and just things i didn't like. For one example: in QOS where some characters just make abrupt changes in personality to serve the plot??? like tf why? But somehow i managed to miss this?? i dont know how, tbf i havnt read the series in like 2 years and this was my first introduction to all these tropes so i think i just missed it? dont ask how XD damn this is a big comment, not what i usually do

I say continue! Definitely entertaining haha! I read the first book and didn’t want to finish the series at all. There was a big gap before I picked up the series again and now I’m on book 5. I started really enjoying from book 3 on but it’s just a fun, get out of a slump series for me. I’ve read each book in between heavier high fantasy and historical fiction series I love. I think if the story started at book 2 or 3 it would be much more redeeming series for people.

Definitely continue! I liked the first two books well enough to continue, but I struggle to go back and re-read them now. Books 3 on it's almost like another series (but not in a bad, disjointed way, just in that the characters have grown up so much) and it even switches from YA to NA which works well too.

  • @user-we8dn5ub9z

Honestly they get a bit better but not much...I liked the second one when I read it and I really did like Tower of Dawn and enjoyed the rest enough to continue (haven’t read the last one yet) but it’s really not anything special. The main character kinda sucks all the way through but there were some side characters I like. Personally, I think the only redeeming quality is the large intricate plot and interesting world-building. So yeah the series as a whole is highly flawed but they’re not terrible to read. I’d even say they’re enjoyable/entertaining but overall not worth the read unless you really enjoy the world and characters from the get-go. Personally, I’d just read the second one and the third one (cause the story changes drastically from book 3 onward) to see if you like it and if not just finish there.

The first time I read this book, I honestly thought that someone was selling their fanfiction on kindle. I tried reading it multiple times, and even started the second book at one point, yet I still couldn't take it seriously. The main character was so underdeveloped that she didn't even have a personality other than being pretty, acting like a brat, and being quite a hypocrite. I'm all for flawed characters, but only when it's the author's intent (Maas seemed to be going for quite the Mary Sue and it backfired, hard). Mind you, I read this when it came out in 2012 and I was 13 at the time. It's probably been a good five years or more since I last tried to read this book and it still haunts me to this day. Throne of Glass had potential and I think that's what makes me so upset. I bought it because the premise was interesting and the main character sounded intriguing. It's a shame that it was published the way it was because the book would've turned out alright if Maas had thought over it more. I've heard great things about ACOTAR for years, but the exposure I've had to this author has convinced me that I'd be wasting my money.

I knew you fould feel thaht way about this book! Celaena or whatever her name even was is one of the most annoying characters ever! I don't see how was she supposed to be the sassiest assassin if all she did in this book was eating candy, putting on dresses and flirting with the prince???? It's a mystery to me why this series is so popular. When it comes to you continuing to read it, I would say it depends - the series gets a bit better to then get worse later, but in a different way than the first volume. It was a hate-reading party for me for sure!

I love this series, yes it has its flaws but it was the series or book in that matter that gave me that push to try out high fantasy. So I am kind of biased and I never noticed any of the real flaws in the books or was bothered by the writing, but this was way before I discovered booktube and people loving to rant on this series....I personally, LOVE Crown of Midnight, its my fave in the series and I think the next books after that are really good. Quite lengthy and heavily romance based, so if you don't like that don't continue the series. But there are some really great characters you get to meet and some great arcs to follow along the way. So, I think you should decide.

You know, the fact that the main character isn't a complete hero saving the world and making us barf rainbows and is kind of a dislikable character makes me like the books.
