What are your favorite popular standalone books you think are worth the hype?? :D
Behind her eyes. I was shooked really :)
the fault in our stars! people say its sad but that is an UNDERSTATEMENT
Animal farm :)
I liked Letters to the Lost, but I don't think any others I read this month were modern.
Dark Matter was mu favorite book of 2019, and it’s hard for me to even pinpoint why because I read many exceptional books that year. Maybe because I was expecting all sci-fi but I felt it had a romantic spin that I enjoyed even though I normally am not much for romance reading. I kept thinking about it and then in early 2020 I made my husband listen to it on audio with me.
Something to note about A Little Life, I DO NOT recommend this to anyone who’s going through something or who isn’t mentally/emotionally stable , this is by no means an easy read and it’s a hard hitting read.
Please be in a good headspace and place to read this , a lot of people go into this thinking it’s going to a good “sad story” but it can be traumatic for some so be aware.
Noelle here on book tube did a whole vlog about this book in case anyone’s looking for a deeper opinion
Yes!! Thank you for commenting this, hopefully it gets more likes and more people can see it!
Thank you! This was on my TBR for ages until I saw Noelle's video saying it's not an experience that everyone needs. And I have taken the decision to not exacerbate my MH problems by reading it rn 🙈
Very important to comment this !
yes, this book should not be recommended so openly, there are lots of trigger warnings.
I thought it would be a beautiful and sad book but instead I got PTSD symptoms back and got suicidal😬 0/10
Let's not forget about the seven husbands of evelyn hugo! I loved it so much
Am I the only person in the universe who couldn't stand that book?! Every time I see it recommended my heart dies just a little bit
@@phormidable lol same I swear I wanted to like it but I just couldn't. It makes me so sad that I couldn't connect with Evelyn at all.
@@fatereads THANK YOU this is an important bonding moment 😂 I thought the Monique passages (was that the journalist's name?) were entirely unnecessary; I would have understood Evelyn's story without Monique's relationship drama that didn't lead anywhere.
@@phormidable certainly not. I disliked the book too. Hated the toxic relationships.
The Book Thief by Markus Zuzak is one of my favorite books of all time.
I'm on a zoom call and DEFINITELY paying attention and not watching this video while on mute :)
Lmao same here
is there a way to like mute zoom and only zoom so you can watch youtube videos during meetings in peace.....pls help
@@yasminehentati3911 right clikc on your volume thing on the computer and open a tab that has the volume per channel?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t love series! I’m very much a mood reader, and many times, I only read book 1 of a series and then want a new story, so I never return to start the next book 😅 or I LOVE the plot of book 1 but hate the direction the series goes afterwards!
Thoroughly recommend Where the Crawdads Sing and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine - loved them!
Madeline Miller is actually doing a retelling of The Tempest !
I did not know, thanks! It's so cool!
One of my favorite stand alone books is a Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
same here!!
just the mention of 'a little life' makes me want to cry... love the book, but i'll never NEVER read it again
I want to think I'll eventually reread it but... I don't think my heart can take it lol
Same here!!!!! I got depressed for days over it... gave it 5/5...NEVER REREADING IT lol
I'm always so happy when you mention Flowers For Algernon. It's probably my favourite book of all time 😊
Same. Loved the story since I had read it in sixth grade English. Found I take more from it each time I've read it at different points in life.
Same here! I am so sad not more people talk about this because this book is amazing!
Yes, but it breaks your heart so much.
@@Ermordrung Have been learning that a many schools have been taking it off the reading list. Thus lowering the number of people who do read it. Still suggest it to people though.
Pair it with "An Unattractive Vampire" so there is something light and funny to recover with.
Thanks for including Flowers for Algernon - it’s simply amazing!!
I saw this video and immediately thought “I hope she mentions The Song Of Achilles” and you did not disappoint! Loved the recommendations ❤️
Absolutely loved Flowers for Algernon. It tore my heart to shreds!
I always recommend Dark Matter to people who don't like to read because the pace is so good, the writing easy to get into and the story is just amazing. I'd like to see it become a movie. I read that book in 2 days.
flowers for Algernon made me cry so much
I was about 15 when I read Flowers for Algernon, and yes, I did cry!! 😭😭😭
I read it when I was 28 and I cried on public transport.
eep so many books but for me it's The House in the Cerulean Sea, the art of racing in the rain, ANY book by Khaled Hosseini, The Hating Game!
The Martian audiobook was the book that got me into audiobooks! So good! Highly recommend for those who haven’t read it
The House in the Cerulean Sea! So worth the hype!
Flowers for Algernon, definitely one of my most memorable reads. I love it!
I own A Little Life, but there's so much now in my own life making me sad that I'm hesitant to pick it up. Maybe when the snow flies...
Me exactly! I have wanted to read it for quite some time and I finally found it in my local used store, but I don’t feel like 2020 is the right time for me!
Definitely wait!
@@BookswithEmilyFox Thank you! I appreciate the advice. Today was a rough day as my state hit crazy high covid cases. I think I need to find a comedy or adventure.
Emily! I wanted to know if you could make a video of your reading routine, what your favorite form of reading is, and how you read more! I feel like you read so fast and so many books I really want to too.
You have to stop uploading when I'm going to sleep. I'll send you my schedule soon 😂
I've heard so many good things about Circe, I really need to pick it up soon!
I just picked up the Martian today from a thrift store and I have Flowers for Algernon sitting on my shelf!! I'll definitely be reading those before the end of the year now. Thank you so much for your great recommendations always!!
These are such great recommendations. Thank you. I may just have to add some of these to my TBR. Happy Reading!!!
I rarely read YA but I picked up I’ll give you the sun this year because of your recommendation and it has been one of my favorite books I’ve read this year 💜 so many feelings
I read The Midnight Library after watching your video ... WOW ... I absolutely loved it 🥰 thank you so much .... 🤓😊
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I always watch all of your videos and I was having a really shitty day... Thank you for making it better!! ❤️
Wonderful, I love getting tons of great standalone recommendations, thanks! 💕
Wow! I was waiting for a video of you talking about A Little Life because that book wrecked me and I didnt know you've actually read it already! Im so happy you included that here and that you loved it. Excited to read Flowers for Algernon because you recommended so I had to buy it😂 Im excited but also worried that I might be a wreck again after reading it but I know it'll be fun💛
Woke up to see you posted a new video and it's a wonderful start to a new day 🥰
I really want to read A Little Life. Totally agree with all of these, especially Madeline Miller’s books 💜 I can’t wait for her next one!
SO agree with you regarding Dark Matter & Recursion. I loved those two! Also, yes for Song of Achilles and Circe!! I still need to read The Martian & A Little Life (when I want to feel sad) 😂
One of my favorite standalone books is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
I haven't tried any of his books yet... I apparently need to prepare the tissues and 2020 was fun enough already lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox Fantastic author! I read all his books. A thousand splendid suns ruined meee. I recommend that book to everyone
Was about to sleep suddenly her notification came couldn't stop myself to watch her video.
Worth mentioning that Flowers for Algernon was originally written as a short story before being expanded into the novel which is likely what most outlets sell, but just be aware you could potentially get a much shorter story than you might have expected depending where and which version you buy, especially short story collections. Both have their ups and down though obviously the novel has you more emotionally invested.
I’m adding all of these books to my reading list, thanks for sharing! 💫 Keep rising to be who you want to be! 💫 #keeprising #risingtobe #aswerise #riser
I read I'll give you the sun within one night. I'm so happy you recommended it! I couldn't put it down at all.
Flowers for Algernon is one of my favourite books. I cried so much reading it 😭
I absolutely cried reading flowers for Algernon. I made my wife read it who isn't really a reader(she's also named charlie, lol) and she even loved it!
Flowers for Algernon was so good.
Love your vids !!! I think Circe is a book people either love or hate. I had to DNF it after about 100 pages but now I think I should give it another try !
Couldn't agree more about "Circe" and the narrator of the audioook, Perdita Weeks. Loved the story AND the narration.
I'm enjoying this series of videos- subbed :)
very late but i just want to say that i really love listening to your voice and i'm so happy u updated have a nice day🌞💛
It's such a pleasure to hear you speak.
This reminded me I want to read Recursion and I checked my library and it’s available 😱
I'm a very slow reader. It took me two months to read the martian. I know it is a lot but there are weeks where I don't read at all.
I loved the book. I actually laughed reading it. It was amazing
The moment u said Miller is going to bring out a new book next year I wanted 2020 to end even more.
Your choice of books here is amazing! Aw, poor Matt 😂
A little Life tore my heart out!
I highly recommend My brothers name is Jessica! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
I totally thought you'd be talking about Priory here! I did really enjoy Circe though and I have a used copy of Achilles I'm stoked to get to.
I'm thinking about rereading Priory soon, but I'm afraid it won't be as good as the first time
I included the Priory in the "underrated" version. It's pretty popular on Booktube but it had a lot less ratings that the other books in this video!
@@BookswithEmilyFox Oh whoops, I definitely watched that video and somehow forgot that lol.
@@gereads7669 I kind of want to too but feel the same way--honestly I was disappointed by the ending so I'm worried that rereading it won't be as enjoyable because I know what's coming
It's on my TBR from now....
I read Black Crouch's short story Summer Frost and thought it was incredible! So I am super keen to read his books!
I read Algernon Freshmen year of high school and really enjoyed it. There's a shorter version that won the Hugo. I believe it was serialized before being turned into a fuller novel. I'll have to check it out one of these days
I hardly ever read series when I try I usually never actually continue. Also I’ll give you the sun is one of my faves too!
The age of witches by Louisa Morgan. I read it a few months back and it was such a powerful and beautiful story to read
I got A Littel Life because many people I follow love it so much and tbh I just wanted a good book cry. I have about 100 pages left and have not been close to tears once. The things happening are truely heartbreaking, yes! But I guess the book is sadly not for me, I think I am just not invested in the characters enough ;v; I hope many others will enjoy it more than I do.
Really love The Martian tho! I never read anything similar before and was surprised! Also really loved The Song of Achilles! Recently got myself Circe, looking forward to reading that soon c:
Love your recommendations videos, keep it up :D !
Yes!! I teared up in the last 100 but other than that it didn't pull on the heart strings. There is some messed up stuff that happens but I felt it was more of a "ah crap dude" than an ugly cry book.
You should call the video about the series that should have been a stand alone, “Three’s A Crowd” (series usually come in 3s🤷🏻♀️) I’m loving all of these videos ☺️
Great video, once again. I absolutely love The Martian.
Oof, I didn't cry in A Little Life but I definitely felt it. I took a few days off reading ANYTHING after I finished it because it hurt me so much.
Thank you!! I teared up at the end but that was it. I don't get why people ugly cry during this book. I get the guy goes thru some damn F'ed up stuff but I just felt it was more like and "ah crap dude" than an ugly cry book.
I have only read Flowers for Algernon out of this whole set if it makes you feel better lol. A couple of these are on my list though
Love her lipstick!,! Great recs
Flowers for Algernon was a great surprise for me too, never knew I’d enjoy it so much :,) *heartbroken*
Omg i’m now going to take note of these titles!!!! 😍😍😍😍
Yup. I remember Flowers for Algernon in middle school!
I'm so early this time! Time to ignore my forensics homework for this ♥️
♥️
awesome, had to make this list for myself! thanks
Miller is in my top 5 authors currently working. After reading Song of Achilles I spent the next 4 years (?) waiting for her next book. And Circe is the only book I'd ever pre-ordered. LOVE her.
Martian was a lot of fun. Flowers for Algernon made me cry and depressed - it was so good.
Didn't read any of the others, but some of them are on my TBR :) so fingers crossed
Other recommendations:
Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
Travelling Cat Chronicles by H. Arikawa
My Sister, the Serial Killer by O. Braithwaite
Oh yeah, we listened to an abridged version of Flowers for Algernon in 8th grade and I totally cried in class.
These are great recommendations!
Yeeeeez Emily you delivered again 😎
I had to read Flowers for Algernon in middle school and hated it (probably because it made me cry and I was a literal child and missed half of it), so maybe I'll have to try rereading it as an adult! My favorite standalone of this year is This Is How You Lose the Time War, but I'm having trouble thinking of anything else that wasn't a series!
Richard Powers--one of the best American novelists of the past 20 years or so. Latest work is "The Overstory" and it is incredible.
Love Madeline Miller! Have you reas her short story Galatea? It’s a Greek retelling as well and i love it
We have opposite feelings on The Martian and Artemis. I hated The Martian and loved Artemis. 😄😄 It's so interesting to me to see that most people loved one or the other but not both. Psyched for Project: Hail Mary.
Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson would def be on my list if I had one. I found it from one of your older videos years ago. I know that there is technically a prequel coming out at some point, but there is no date yet and it was published 11 years ago so that still counts, right? haha
It's very charming when you drop the "h" at the beginning of "he". :)
I would love a Medusa retelling!
First!!! Love your recommendations. Have you ever considered trying (translated) Japanese light novels?
this pink lipstick!!
I am currently reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King....love time travel and it's so good.
I lived for this look in your Q&A and I'm still dead.
Matt Damon taking the focus off you...
He must have heard me say I don't like him very much lol
@@BookswithEmilyFox He was good in The Martian and okay in Ford v Ferrari but I haven't liked much else with him in.
@@legumesss Matt Damon wasn't in Shawshank redemption, are you thinking of Tim Robbins?
@@jimsbooksreadingandstuff haha oops, that explains a lot
He was pretty badass in the bourne movie series though but haven’t really liked a lot of everything else he’s been in
Fav stand-alone off the top of my head is In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, a fast paced story about a boy who finds this other world as a 13 year old and each chapter is an year of his life in a camp kinda school training to be a warrior or leader, it's so hilarious but so sad at some points with my kind of snarky main character
I'm currently reading The Martian and yes a lot of potatoes 😂😂 I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi but so far (I'm halfway through) I'm loving it! And just started A Little Life yesterday :') I'm ready for the crying
Also we need more standalone books!!
Great topic! I believe you already convinced me to check out I'll give you the sun but A Little Life I do not yet have on my TBR! Torture porn, huh, interesting and intriguing because you made it sound emotionally torturous and I was like ohhhhhh. Lol. I can appreciate your desire for more stand alones.
I didn’t expect The Martian to be as funny as it was. I definitely laughed out loud a few times...
My favorite book of all time is Watership Down by Richard Adams.
I would also recommend two of his other novels, The Plague Dogs (although I'll leave huge tw for very explicit descriptions of animal testing and animal abuse) and The Girl In a Swing, a psychological thriller.
Oh, and of course The book thief.
That lipstick is so Barbie i looooooove it 🥰🥰🥰💖💖💖💖
my favorite stand alone i think would be: "They both die at the end", "the marcian", "girl made of stars", "the Analyst" , "call me by your name", "1984" and yes, "i'ld give you the sun" :)
i definitely fall into the 'hate' category for a little life 😭 totally felt like trauma p*rn to me and i really lost all connection to the characters once i realised that! i just dreaded reading it and i think it took me like. a month to finish 🙁
Circe is struggled through..I don't know why..but it's really hyped a lot..
Have you read into the drowning deep by Mira grant? I loved it and I think you would enjoy it
Great list! Question: For Circe and Song of Achilles, do I need to read Homer’s books first?
definitely not, might be nice to familiarise yourself with the myths portrayed in the books but you dont have to read the whole thing
@@orcocan Thanks for your reply! That's very helpful.
Yeah I agree! I would read a summary but you don't need all the detail. In fact miller's accessible versions might even inspire you to read the original texts afterwards and probably get more out of them that way :)
the martian and a little life are pretty much the only popular books i've enjoyed but i love them so much 🥰
but i will also never buy a copy of ALL because looking at it makes me hurt inside
I didn't love Flowers for Algernon... I really really liked the first half or so, I felt things, I was invested in Charlie, and then I didn't like the second half :/
Oh, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this. As someone who FELL in LOVE with this book, it would be really cool to hear another perspective :))
@@faihanaseem2984 I wouldn't want to include any spoilers here for people that haven't read the book, but essentially I felt like the book's commitment to staying close to how this situation would realistically develop was actually a detriment for me because it made Charlie quite hard to root for towards the last third of the book or so :/
Exactly how I felt!! I loved Charlie but towards the end I was like "what tf is happening"
The fault in our stars, the sun is a also a star, love letters to the dead
8:25 yeah, I agree there's not much character development. But I like it that way because it was really realistic and generally how adults are lol. The characters are actually already mature and responsible nd the only development they need is getting past some problems with their feelings which happens.
The People In The Trees also by Hanya Yanagihara is another great, albeit tough, stand-alone.
I’ve been meaning to read that one too but I’m scared after a little life lol
I made the mistake of reading Flowers for Algernon on my lunch breaks at work. Crying at work was not a good look.
Children of Earth and Sky is a fantastic fantasy/historical stand alone!
